New Wheel Brushes Successfully Remove Material and Debris
Solo Horton Brushes offers comprehensive selection of wheel brushes.
Torrington, CT (PRWEB) April 29, 2007 -- Solo Horton Brushes, a leading supplier of industrial brushes since 1920, recently extended its line of wheel brushes. Wheel brushes are designed for a variety of jobs such as cleaning, deburring, finishing, roughening, smoothing welds, stripping wire, and removing scale.
"Our wheel brushes feature durable carbon or stainless steel wire, with permanent or flexible mountings ready for electric or air power," said L.J. Skeie, President of Solo Horton Brushes. "Like all of our products, these wheel brushes offer top performance at a competitive price and are backed by our satisfaction guarantee."
A wheel brush is attached to grinders or other machinery that rotates the brush at high speeds to remove material or debris. Wheel brush bristles can fan out as a group of individual wire strands or as a grouping of wire strands twisted together. Copper centers hold the wire securely, and stiffness is optimized to reduce operator fatigue. Wheel brushes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with small to large arbor holes and short to long bristle lengths. Use small-diameter wheel brushes on small or hard-to-reach surfaces, or large-diameter wheel brushes with denser fill for heavier jobs.
Solo Horton offers free arbor adapters with every 1800 series or large wheel brush purchased. The company's wheel brushes, along with more than 1 million industrial brushes, can be viewed online at solobrushes.com.

Lack of Space Leads to Compromised Explosion Protection
The current trend toward new process systems to be both higher capacity and more compact leads to difficulty when explosion protection systems are required. Proper fast-acting explosion isolation valves and other explosion protection equipment can not easily be fitted. CV Technology has extensive experience in explosion mitigation strategy and ensures safe protection that can be both more reliable and cost effective.
Jupiter, FL (PRWEB) April 28, 2007 -- There has been a trend in recent years for new process systems to be both higher capacity and more compact. This trend can lead to difficulty when explosion protection systems are required. Too often the need for explosion protection is left for consideration after all other elements in the process system have been designed. This approach can lead to serious shortfalls, unnecessary compromise to safety, and needless additional expense.
Bill Stevenson is Vice President of Engineering for CV Technology, an international leader in explosion protection and mitigation. In one recent project for a new sugar milling system the distance from the mill to the receiver was too short to allow the needed time for a fast-acting explosion isolation valve to close in the event of ignition inside the mill. This required an extensive re-design and large expenditure. Stevenson points out, "In general a distance of at least 20 feet (30 would be better) is necessary from the mill to the location for a valve to ensure closure ahead of an accelerating flame/pressure front." He explains that an even better approach would be enough distance between the mill and the receiver to allow a fast acting valve to close from a signal in either direction. In this scheme two possibilities are addressed: Ignited material in the mill would be detected and the fast-acting valve would close to prevent flame and pressure from reaching the receiver; or ignited material in the receiver would be detected to close the valve to prevent flame and pressure from propagating back to the mill. This scheme requires double the distance mentioned above.
With the current trend toward more and more compact design these distances are often not available.
Stevenson claims, "We have seen systems that were so compact that proper protection could not be fitted and in consequence are being operated without protection. We have also seen many examples of systems that are neglected and in worst case situations where safety systems have been disconnected simply because they could not be reached for service."
In another project the fast acting valve was squeezed in just at the end of the pipe and at the inlet to the receiver. This scheme provides protection from the mill to the receiver, but accepts the possibility that a deflagration initiation in the receiver could back-flash to the mill. A second fast-acting valve on the air induction port to the mill was necessary to prevent flame spread directly into the room. This scheme adds considerably to the complexity of the protection system and to the cost for protection.
The problem of flame spread propagation in piping systems handling combustible dusts is made even more difficult to control in cases where the distances are too short for isolation to establish a barrier ahead of the flame/pressure front. In another example, the distance from process machine to aspirating dust collector was less than 12 feet. The insurer wanted isolation and the client wanted to comply, but when confronted with the reality that it would not work reliably in such a short distance an alternative and more risky approach had to be taken. In this case the protection system design allows for the possibility that ignition in the machine could accelerate through the interconnected piping to the dust collector and that the resultant ignition would be very strong indeed. This situation is extremely difficult to address with certainty. There is no test data for initially turbulent conditions or from flame-jet ignition sources. Both are possible in this situation and of course the potential for a much more violent explosion is obvious. The housing for the dust collector needed strengthening and the size of the explosion protection system needed to be considerably larger than would have been necessary if more space had been allowed in the original design. More important than the added complexity and expense of this approach is that it is difficult to be certain that this system is adequately protected for a worst case event.
Another impact factor when process systems are designed to be very compact is finding room to fit explosion protection equipment where needed and allowing reasonable access for service. Says Stevenson, "It is always nice to have room to work, and it is necessary to ensure long term reliability for the sophisticated equipment that is used for industrial explosion protection."
The best first step is to get the protection requirements specified as early in the development phase for a new process system as possible. In that way it is often possible to ensure safe protection that is both more reliable and much more cost effective. Bringing us in early is your best option for a successful outcome.

Tognum Group acquires Katolight, a manufacturer of gensets in Mankato, Minnesota,USA
Tognum CEO Volker Heuer: "This acquisition opens up strategic market prospects for our business in North America and gives us optimal access to end-customers." -- Excellent supplement of Tognum's Decentralized Power Generation business unit in the important North American market. --Further milestone along the growth path of Tognum.
Mankato, MN, USA and Friedrichshafen, Germany (PRWEB) April 27, 2007 -- Tognum GmbH, headquartered in Friedrichshafen, Germany, today announced the acquisition of Katolight Corp., a U.S. manufacturer of generator sets. Katolight is based in Mankato, Minnesota, USA, and produces diesel and gas-powered engine generator sets for industrial and agricultural applications as well as for emergency power supply, covering a power range of 15 to 3,250 kilowatts. With around 340 employees, Katolight posted sales revenues of approximately $135 million (approx. €100 million) in 2006/07 (fiscal year ending March 31, 2007). The parties to the transaction have agreed not to disclose any details of the price paid.
"With the acquisition of Katolight, we have passed another milestone on our track to become a globally leading provider of decentralized power generators," stated Volker Heuer, CEO of Tognum. "Katolight is a perfect element in our growth strategy, because it is a well-positioned brand and an excellent supplement to our product range in the important and further growing North American market. Another crucial factor is that Katolight gives us direct access to end-customers."
Business relations have already existed between Tognum and Katolight for many years. For example, some of Katolight's generator sets are based on diesel engines from the core Tognum company, MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH. Its subsidiary, MTU Detroit Diesel Inc. (in Detroit, Michigan, USA), supplied more than 170 of its Series 60, Series 2000 and Series 4000 engines to Katolight last year.
"We know the company very well and know that we have acquired a platform with great potential for the distribution of power generators, primarily based on our own engines," explained Heuer. MTU Detroit Diesel, while now supplying Katolight with engines, will maintain its role as engine supplier to other customers in North America.
Katolight, a family owned business founded in 1952, was most recently owned by Kay R. Jacobson and managed for the past 21 years by her husband, Lyle G. Jacobson. "The main reason for the sale to Tognum was the fact that Katolight will be in the hands of a long-standing and reliable business associate", said Lyle G. Jacobson. "It is also important to us that Tognum is taking over all of our workforce and will continue to operate under the Katolight name in Mankato, Minnesota."
The new company in the Tognum Group will play a key role in the Systems and Components division offering standardized power generators. Katolight will be operated as a brand for generator sets based on diesel engines. It complements the well-known Tognum brands MDE and CFC Solutions, which specialize in gas-engine generators and fuel-cell generators, respectively.
"We are excellently positioned in the marketplace with this trio of proven and future-oriented products for the constantly growing demand for local power generation," stated Tognum Executive Vice President Christof von Branconi, who is responsible for the Systems and Components division. "It is becoming increasingly important to have electrical energy available quickly and reliably wherever it is needed," pointed out Branconi. "This is particularly apparent in the United States, where hurricanes or heavy snowfalls often disrupt the regular power supply."
With immediate effect, Katolight will be managed by Armin Groeber as CEO, who until now has been responsible for the entire assembly of engines and main components at the core Tognum company MTU Friedrichshafen. Groeber already has over two years' of business experience in the United States: he was Head of Operations for the North American region from 2002 until 2004. "I'm looking forward to returning to the United States," said Groeber. "Taking full entrepreneurial responsibility for Katolight with its highly motivated team is a great opportunity to further develop the company and strengthen its market position."
Tognum
With its business and trade names MTU, MTU Detroit Diesel, Katolight, MDE, CFC Solutions, L'Orange and Rotorion, Tognum GmbH is a worldwide leading supplier of diesel engines and complete drive systems for ships, heavy land and rail vehicles, and industrial applications for decentralized power generation plants. The company also distributes Mercedes-Benz industrial engines. The range of products, with diesel engines from 20 - 9,100 kW (27 - 12,200 hp) power, gas engines, gas turbines and fuel cells, is one of the most modern and comprehensive in the industry. Tognum develops and produces customized electronic systems for the control and monitoring of the engines and drive systems. The company employs more than 7,500 staff worldwide and achieved sales of more than € 2.5bn in 2006. With 16 subsidiaries, more than 130 sales partners and 1,100 authorized dealers, Tognum's sales and service structure is established on a global scale.

Theodolite vs. the Total Station: Southern Photo Presents a Brief History of Surveying Equipment
Before the advent of the electric total station, surveyors used an instrument known as a theodolite to measure angles and calculate distance. How does this purely mechanical piece of surveying equipment work and how does it compare the the electronic, computer driven total station that replaced it? Southern photo has gathered the following brief history of surveying equipment to shed some light on the differences between these two tools.
Greensboro, NC (PRWEB) April 27, 2007 -- Before the advent of the electric total station, surveyors used an instrument known as a theodolite to measure angles and calculate distance. How does this purely mechanical piece of surveying equipment work and how does it compare the the electronic, computer driven total station that replaced it? Southern photo has gathered the following brief history of surveying equipment to shed some light on the differences between these two tools.
Mark Cheves, editor of The American Surveyor magazine, says that there are really only two situations in which to use a theodolite today. In the third world, where access to electricity is spotty or nonexistent, theodolites are a natural alternative to the electric-powered total station. It can do this because intead of using computer driven measurements and calculations, the theodolite employs two discs, one on the vertical and one on the horizontal plane, that are manually rotated to set an angle. The surveyor then reads the angle using a tiny microscope attached to the side of the instrument.
Also, in the construction industry, if a contractor needs to square off a building or create a simple diagonal line, a theodolite can measure a 45- or 90-degree angle fairly easily, without the added complication of using a total station with a prism and a computer.
Cheves also said there are some surveyors who like the traditional feel of a theodolite, and use it because of some closely held beliefs. In the early 1900s, before electric total stations and GPS technologies were available, surveyors had to use either a theodolite or even a compass and chain to measure angles, distances and borders. Since this was the only technology available, and state governments had to create official land boundaries for businesses and citizens, measurements taken by surveyors using these instruments were made official in governmental logs. Some highly traditional thinkers in the surveying industry, Cheves said, believe that in order to arrive at these early official borders, one must use the same instruments they had available back then.
Total station technology has assisted surveyors in several ways. One, it has eliminated human error to a large extent. With a theodolite, the surveyor must peer through a tiny microscope to see the angle, and then write it down correctly in his log book. The total station records this data, which the surveyor simply downloads onto his computer when he returns to his office.
Second, the total station has completely eliminated the need to measure lines by hand. In the past, surveyors had to use chain to mark off lines, and then count the links to measure the distance with the most accuracy. Chains are unreliable because they can lose links in transit and they change shape in very hot or cold weather, and a surveyor's goal is to get a measurement down to within a few centimeters.
Third, the total station can be set up on a tripod, allowing for a one-man surveying crew. Surveyors are difficult to come by these days. Cheves said surveying used to be a learned trade. He's been surveying since 1963 and he does not have a college degree. Now, 23 states require a four-year degree and surveyors must sit for both a national and state examination before they can work in the field. Since this is the case, many states are losing surveyors as they retire. If a company only has six people on staff, now it can send out a one-man operation.
Theodolites still have a place in the surveying industry, where electricity is sparse or when one only needs to measure a simple angle, but since the 1970s they have been almost completely replaced by the electronic total station. Old-school surveyors still keep them around, but the elimination of so much error and additional work makes the total station and GPS technology extremely attractive to surveyors today.

Bancap Self Storage Group Announces Carl Touhey's 10 Year Anniversary
Bancap Self Storage Group, Inc., the "#1 Self Storage Broker in California," recently announced the 10 year anniversary of its Northern California office and the appointment of Carl E. Touhey to the firm in its 1997 expansion.
(PRWEB) April 27, 2007 -- Bancap Self Storage Group, Inc., the "#1 Self Storage Broker in California," recently announced the 10 year anniversary of its Northern California office and the appointment of Carl E. Touhey to the firm in its 1997 expansion.
"Carl has brokered more self storage properties in Northern California than anyone else," says Bancap Self Storage Group President, Dean Keller. "In fact, he's probably sold more properties than all other brokers combined over the past several years."
Touhey started his commercial real estate career in Arizona in the mid 1980's with a large real estate brokerage firm. In the early 1990's, after learning about the industry through his family's holdings, Touhey moved to Texas and purchased several self storage properties from the Resolution Trust Corporation in Texas, Florida and Arizona. Later settling in California with his family, Carl is now exclusively dedicated to the brokerage of self storage investments.
Carl has been an active leader in the Northern California Storage Operator's Network and the Texas Mini Storage Association. He has also been a regular speaker and discussion leader at many of the self storage industry's trade shows and conferences.
With his experience owning and operating several self storage properties and as one of the most successful brokers in the industry, Touhey's experience and insights enable him to provide knowledge and expertise most brokers do not have. "When an owner asks me to sell their property, they know they are working with someone who truly understands their business," says Touhey. "Each property is a combination of real estate investment and business enterprise, I understand them both."

Penetron Protects Drinking Water Supply for the City of Harrisonburg, VA
Penetron's proven crystalline waterproofing technology has been chosen to protect over 5 million gallons of precious drinking water for the City of Harrisonburg.
East Setauket, NY (PRWEB) April 27, 2007 -- When the City of Harrisonburg, Virginia was looking for the peace of mind that the new tanks they had commissioned to be built would provide many years service, their consulting engineers, Wiley & Wilson, Inc, specified the use of Penetron Admix.
Both the main 5 million gallon tank and the smaller 600,000 gallon tank were prestressed concrete tanks designed and built by The Crom Corporation. Penetron Admix was used in the in the construction of the walls and floors of the tanks.
In addition to providing the concrete with very low permeability characteristics, Penetron Admix provided the corrosion protection needed for the prestressed cables and rebar used in the tank construction.
Penetron's unique ability to grow crystals within the natural pores of the concrete locks out water and bridges hairline, plastic shrinkage cracks that tend to form during the concrete curing process. This feature gives these concrete tanks an active protection system to combat maintenance problems that typically cause leaks and ultimately other serious problems.
By adding Penetron Admix to their tanks, the City of Harrisonburg has taken proactive steps to ensuring many, many years of low cost maintenance and trouble free service.
"Penetron's crystalline waterproofing products are perfectly suited to applications such as these and many others in the water and wastewater industries," stated Christopher Chen, Director of North American Sales and Marketing for Penetron. "In addition to the total concrete protection our products provide against water intrusion, corrosion and freeze/thaw, Penetron products are also NSF 61 certified for use in drinking water applications. Our efforts to exceed such stringent standards underlines our commitment to providing products that are not only high performing but also health and environmentally responsible."

Tulsa Home Builder Responds to Energy Costs and Concerns with Energy Star Standards
PMC Homes, a Tulsa home-building company, has made a commitment to the community and the environment by following the Energy Star program guidelines in every home they build.
Tulsa, Okla. (PRWEB) April 26, 2007 - PMC Homes, a local home-building company, has raised the bar for Greater Tulsa homes. As the only Tulsa builder committed to Energy Star standards in every home they build, PMC Homes is committed to improving the community and the environment.
PMC Homes began building their Greater Tulsa homes to EPA Energy Star standards in November of 2006. Since then, they have committed themselves to protecting the environment while helping Tulsa homeowners save money with energy-efficient products and practices.
Thanks to the efforts of companies like PMC Homes, Energy Star households across the country saved $12 billion in utility costs in 2005 and decreased greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the emissions from twenty-three million cars.
While the energy savings and environmental impact are impressive, altering construction practices to concur with Energy Star standards does not require dramatic sacrifices for homeowners. The costs of energy efficient appliances and construction pay for themselves within the first few years of living in an Energy Star home.
PMC Homes had been incorporating good energy practices into their work without even realizing it. "When we evaluated the program, we discovered that PMC was already meeting most of the Energy Star guidelines," said Shawn Linfoot, marketing director for PMC Homes. "It just made sense to go ahead and adopt these principles one-hundred percent."
Energy Star home builders:
- Install energy efficient, non-polluting lighting, appliances and HVAC systems
- Use tight construction, effective insulation and high performance windows
- Recycle, reuse and maintain construction materials to reduce waste
In addition to preserving the environment outside the home, the high standards required by Energy Star homes contribute to safer, more comfortable living environments for residents as well. Efficient, modern appliances and improved indoor air quality are just a few of the benefits Energy Star homeowners can expect.
The builders at PMC Homes are not alone in their quest for energy conservation through better building. As of today, thousands of homebuilders have joined with the EPA to construct over 500,000 Energy Star qualified homes, offering viable solutions to protect resources and reduce pollution for the next generation.
Visit PMC Homes today to see how they can raise the standard for the home of your dreams.
About PMC Homes
PMC Homes is Tulsa's premier homebuilder and has been building homeowner's dreams for twenty years. They are known for quality construction, service and warranties as well as many home design innovations. They pride themselves on excellent craftsmanship and close attention to the needs and desires of their customers.

Little Guys in Building Trade Have Chance to Speak Out
This is the place for anyone, big or little, to go to register a grievance against anyone big or little in the building trade. It's a resource to check out anybody big or little associated within the construction industry.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) April 26, 2007 -- This press release announces the April 2, 2007, launch of thecontractorsside.com, in the construction trades.
Since there is nowhere for a tradesman, whether contractor or anyone else, to complain about unsuitable clients or outcomes, thecontractorsside.com was created by Lee W. Dodson to provide a forum and a resource for trade.
While the site is directed at the state of California, it is suitable for any area in the United States. The site was created because the building trades have nowhere to go to check out clients, suppliers, other contractors. The Contractor's State Licensing Board falls under the purview of State Consumer Affairs. The courts hold a natural bias against the building trades. News services have traditionally aligned against builders, and nobody else cares about the problems faced by building tradespeople.
On this site, a trades person may, at a reasonable cost, give his or her account of problems encountered on a job, can easily and inexpensively check a client or a business to see if other tradespeople had a problem in their business dealings. The cost is $10, for which the user may post one complaint and may check one client, or the user may post two complaints, or the user may log on to check two clients.
This beats the heck out of the expense of going through the process of a credit or background check on a potential client and waiting for the process to clear.
Further, this site puts the name of the subject out of there for any user to see, and it can give advice on how to deal with a problem before it arises. The site can automatically generate either an e-mail or postcard notification-to the subject of the complaint, and it is designed to maintain the anonymity of the posting entity if so desired.
This site is the next logical step that can be taken to protect the thousands of honest contractors, tradespeople, or workers by exposing the presumed cheats. Let's face it, the consumer, whether honest or not, holds all the cards in the business. It's time the playing field levels out.
It has been said that sunshine is the best antiseptic. This person-to-person site is mounted to shed light on the little guy side of the construction business equation.
Finally, there's a sympathetic ear for someone who's been stiffed.
While thecontractorsside.com is not a dispute resolution service, it is a venue for getting the word out about iffy clients, suppliers, even legal entities who may be predisposed to taking the client's side.

Leica Geosystems Reduces Dependency for Reference Station with Advanced IPAS PPP Post-Processing Software
IPAS PPP software determines high accuracy position and velocity data from a single Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver. It then uses Precise Point Positioning (PPP) technology to take advantage of precise satellite orbit and satellite clock corrections while post-processing the trajectory of the sensor flight mission.
Norcross, Ga., 28 March 2007) - Traditionally, building highly accurate image-based maps in remote areas is difficult and time consuming, particularly as reference station data, to coordinate aerial data, is frequently unavailable. In response, Leica Geosystems has developed IPAS PPP Post Processing Software, an innovative post-processing software package within the Inertial Position & Attitude System (IPAS) product family that reduces the need for reference station data.

HOK New York to Design Seven Buildings in New Songdo City, Korea
Six multi-use towers and one hotel will frame Central Park.
New York, NY (Vocus/PRWEB ) April 26, 2007 -- The New York office of Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Inc. ( HOK ), one of the world's leading architecture and urban design firms, is designing seven new buildings in Incheon, Korea. The six mixed-use towers and hotel will be part of New Songdo City, a $25 billion master-planned international business district developed by Gale International and POSCO E&C. Gale International is headquartered in New York with offices in Boston; Irvine, California; Seoul and New Songdo, South Korea.
Three of the mixed-use towers, located on the north side of New Songdo's Central Park (the city's main public park) are scheduled to begin construction in May 2007. The towers, which form a gateway to the northern residential neighborhood of the city, are intended to set an international high quality standard of living and design prototype. Taking full advantage of the southern exposure, the towers will become one of the prime residential addresses in the city, providing direct views of the park and beyond. The towers will accommodate housing, live-in work amenities and retail space. Sales of the 900 units are scheduled to begin in May 2007, with estimated completion of the project in 2009. Kenneth Drucker, Design Director at HOK New York, describes the sets of towers as "an incredible opportunity to define the northern edge of Central Park as the 'Fifth Avenue' of New Songdo City."
Located on the south side of Central Park, the Convention Center Hotel is already under construction and pursuing the goal of becoming the first LEED® certified hotel in Korea. The 25-story hotel tower will have a total of 23 occupied floors and a two-story rooftop mechanical area and roof screen. The hotel will contain 322 guestrooms, eight percent of which will be suites; as well as a presidential suite and executive lounge on the top floors. Typical hotel rooms will average 380 square feet and will each include a four fixture bathroom.
Hotel amenities will be located on the five lower levels, including two ballrooms, function rooms, a spa, gym facilities, a covered swimming pool, two restaurants and a lounge bar. The kitchens, food and beverage preparation and administration areas will be connected through a service corridor on each floor, and support services will be located on the two basement levels.
HOK's Convention Center Hotel is part of a group of buildings that will also include the Convention Center, a 65-story, mixed-use residential and office tower, the Northeast Asia Trade Tower, and a retail mall. The three buildings will be connected through a series of plazas and open landscaped areas, as well as a single below-grade parking structure spanning the entire area. The hotel is estimated for completion in 2009.
While Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates created the master plan for New Songdo City, HOK New York is acting as the Design Architect in designing over 3 million square feet in the six towers and hotel along Central Park, with ARUP handling the structural and curtainwall design; Dong-Il Architects acting as the Korean Associate Architect for residential work on the towers; and Baum Architects acting as the Associate Architects for the first hotel.
New Songdo City, being built on 1,500 acres of reclaimed land along the Yellow Sea, is positioned to become the hub of Northeast Asia. The largest private real estate development in history, New Songdo is located at the site of General MacArthur's 1950 landing. New Songdo will be larger than the city of Boston when completed and will include fifty million square feet of office space, thirty million square feet of residential space, ten million square feet of retail space, five million square feet of hotel space and ten million square feet of public space. Every conceivable cultural and recreational amenity will be available including a world class hospital, two international preparatory schools and a 100 acre Central Park with a world class aquarium and art museum.

"This approach saves job seekers unnecessary time and energy in not having to apply for positions they have no chance of getting; while allowing employers to be proactive in their recruitment, rather than relying on traditional job boards and hoping for the best!"
World-first technology

Biomass Gas & Electric Pioneers Renewable Energy Efforts In Georgia
Biomass Gas & Electric Company, LLC (BG&E), an Atlanta-based renewable energy company, has signed a pioneering power purchase agreement with Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company. BG&E will initially provide 25 megawatts (MW) of electricity produced in its environmentally friendly plant using advanced technology which converts a wide range of woody biomass and wood construction waste to electric power in an oxygen-free environment.
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 25, 2007 -- Biomass Gas & Electric Company announces a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) recently signed with Georgia Power to provide the utility with electric power. A 25-megawatt renewable energy plant will be built next to a construction wood waste landfill in a suburb north of Atlanta.
The advanced technology BG&E is using follows a two-step process. First, biomass is superheated in an extremely low oxygen environment to produce a synthetic gas. Then this gas is used to produce steam to operate the power turbines in order to generate electricity. This highly efficient and extremely low-emission process offers a significant power production alternative that is both cost competitive and environmentally friendly.
The PPA between Georgia Power and BG&E is the result of a successful two-year collaborative effort between the two companies along with the assistance and guidance of the Georgia Public Service Commission and its staff.
"We must truly thank the commission, the commission staff and Georgia Power for the dedication and hard work that has led to this historic PPA. This PPA is the result of the newly approved and creative PPA process for renewable biomass electricity production. By using Georgia's significant biomass resources, many new jobs will be created in Georgia while providing an ultra clean additional source of energy for Georgia," said Glenn Farris, CEO of BG&E.
BG&E is a 6-year-old Atlanta-based company managed by some of the most experienced personnel in the country in biomass energy production. Key members of the BG&E team were directly responsible for setting up and running the first commercial scale advanced biomass gasification plant in the country.

De Young Properties to Offer Permanent Fire Escape Ladders in Brentwood Homes
Lifesaving escape device to be offered as an option for Central Valley residents
Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) April 25, 2007 -- PEARL Protected®, creators of the patented Permanent Escape And Rescue Ladder (PEARL®) for two-story homes, today announced that De Young Properties is one of the pioneering homebuilders in California to offer PEARL in newly-constructed and existing Brentwood homes. The PEARL permanent escape ladder is available for installation in the builder's three popular Brentwood communities located in Fresno and Clovis. De Young Properties will also offer PEARL to its existing homeowners for retrofit installation.
As one of the largest homebuilders in the region, De Young Properties has delivered advanced innovation, customer service and quality to more than 7,000 families in central California. In 2007, the company continues this legacy by adding PEARL to its home safety upgrade package as well as adding three new communities to its portfolio: Brentwood on the Green (northeast Fresno), Brentwood Ranch (northwest Fresno) and Brentwood Loma Vista (in Clovis). De Young Properties also offers alarm systems, fire resistant roof tiles and fully fenced yards as part of its home safety package, in addition to many other features.
"Our homeowners deserve superior protection in case of a residential emergency, including a safe way to escape from upstairs rooms," said Jerry De Young, president of De Young Properties. "Giving consumers the option to include PEARL is just one of the ways we're exceeding customer expectations."
According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 16,000 people were injured or killed by residential fires in 2005. Many of these casualties are the direct result of not being able to escape from upper-story bedrooms. Because PEARL can be permanently installed into the interior wall space below second and third-story windows, homebuilders like De Young Properties are closing this deadly gap in residential fire safety by including an "always there" means of escape.
De Young Properties joins a list of approximately 60 builders who are making home safety a priority by including PEARL in new home construction. According to a recent online survey, more than 80 percent of respondents "strongly agree" that homebuilders have a social responsibility to offer innovative home safety features - either as upgrade options or standard features (Source: Zoomerang on behalf of PEARL Protected, December 2006). De Young Properties is one of the only homebuilders in the state of California to fulfill this by offering comprehensive home safety packages that include the PEARL permanent escape ladder.
PEARL Protected CEO David Duley believes tapping into these consumer insights will not only help save lives, it can also help builders enhance their credibility and increase sales - despite the current housing market slump.
"Nearly 90 percent of our survey respondents said they are more likely to choose a builder with a reputation for making home safety a priority versus an equally qualified builder," said Duley. "This demonstrates a widespread consumer preference for homebuilders to elevate standards of safety."
Since its October 2005 debut, PEARL has become one of the most recognized home safety products in the marketplace. PEARL received the 2006 Product Innovation Award from the Home Safety Council as well as several other building product awards. PEARL has also been featured in two different episodes of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and has been showcased on NBC's "Today" and CBS's "The Early Show."
Current and prospective homeowners in the Central Valley Region of California can visit the Brentwood Model Home Center at Millbrook to see the installed PEARL permanent escape ladder. For more information about PEARL Protected, visit www.pearlprotected.com.

Concrete Art in the Garden--The Concrete Network Launches a New Section on Concrete Statuary
From whimsical to classic, concrete statuary and garden accents are available in every form and genre imaginable. The Concrete Network's recently launched Concrete Statuary section explores the decorative options, designs, photos and more available to homeowners, landscapers, and designers.
Yucaipa, CA (PRWEB) April 25, 2007 -- The Concrete Network, the largest and most comprehensive source for concrete information, has just launched a new Concrete Statuary section on its Web site. The section details design options, colors and finishes, tips for buying, how to care for pieces, and more on this popular new trend.
For centuries, landscapers have recognized the importance of balancing the lush floral beauty of a garden with statuary, fountains and other ornamentation that provide structure, contrast and decorative interest. Even though stone has long served that ornamental purpose, today there's growing interest in a concrete alternative that offers even greater aesthetic value at a fraction of the cost.
Statues, fountains, benches, pond blocks and a vast array of other decorative pieces made of cast stone are showing up in gardens everywhere in every form imaginable.
"Concrete is an ideal medium for creating themed gardenscapes," says Janice Lucioni of Secret Garden Statuary, Seattle.
Cast stone is a highly refined architectural precast concrete that can be manufactured to simulate nearly any type of natural cut stone including limestone, sandstone, granite, slate and travertine. It can be made from white or gray cement, and often mineral pigments or decorative aggregates are tossed into the mix to add color and variation.
For more inspiration, browse through The Concrete Network's Concrete Statuary section for examples of fountains and modular ponds, and tables, benches and containers.
Established in 1999, The Concrete Network's purpose is to educate consumers, builders, and contractors on popular decorative techniques and applications including stamped concrete, stained concrete floors, concrete countertops, polished concrete, and much more. In March 2007 The Concrete Network Web site had 997,745 visitors researching decorative concrete.
The site excels at connecting buyers with local contractors in their area through its Find-A-Contractor service. The service provides visitors with a list of decorative concrete contractors throughout the U.S. and Canada, and is fully searchable by 23 types of decorative concrete work and 200 metropolitan areas throughout North America.

Pioneer in Environmentally Friendly Glues Introduces Construction Industry's First Full Line of ‛Green' Adhesives with GREENchoice™ Launch
Titebond® adhesives manufacturer Franklin International unveils the new GREENchoice line, featuring solvent-free adhesives for every application on the construction site. Contractors can readily identify the new GREENchoice products, introduced with distinctive new packaging and logo that connote a healthy earth.
(PRWEB) April 23, 2007 -- The adhesives manufacturer that developed the first eco-friendly construction adhesive two decades ago now proudly introduces the construction industry's most complete line of solvent-free adhesives with the launch of its new GREENchoice brand.
The core GREENchoice line includes seven solvent-free adhesives and one eco-safe polyurethane-based formula. Together, GREENchoice construction adhesives can handle any bonding need on the construction site. In addition, the adhesives offer the same superior level of performance contractors expect in solvent-based formulas - minus the odor or risks to construction crews or the environment.
Franklin launches GREENchoice with a distinctive new packaging and logo that connote a healthy earth and enable contractors to readily identify the new green line. The logo incorporates a green leaf to signify that the GREENchoice product is in harmony with nature. The packaging is a soft moss green in color, in keeping with the green building motif and woodland hues. In addition, to ensure that the packaging -- not just the product itself -- honors the environment, the corrugated portion of the GREENchoice cartridge is constructed of post-consumer recycled material. Product will ship in the new packaging beginning in June.
Eight types of adhesives comprise the core GREENchoice line. Solvent-free adhesives include GREENchoice Heavy-Duty Construction, Projects & Repair, All-Weather Subfloor, Professional Drywall, Professional Cove Base, Professional Acoustical Sealant and Professional Radon Sealant. The GREENchoice line also includes eco-friendly Premium Polyurethane Construction Adhesive.
Most GREENchoice adhesives currently are available in professional-sized 29-ounce cartridges and also come in 10.5 ounce cartridges for smaller jobs. The new line follows Franklin's established color-coded system for easy identification of application types.
"Franklin launched the GREENchoice program to emphasize our own deep, ongoing commitment to offering products that are safe for the environment, for the crews who apply them and for the people who live or work in the buildings in which our products are used," said Franklin president Evan Williams. "We embraced our obligation to develop environmentally safe adhesives many years before the green movement took root. Today, we are pleased both to be able to offer the industry every type of green adhesive needed to get the job done well -- and safely -- and to help raise industry awareness of the merits of building green."
Franklin's long-standing focus on environmentally safe products goes beyond the GREENchoice line. In addition to its solvent-free construction adhesives, Franklin offers close to 60 types of eco-friendly, solvent-free or VOC-compliant Titebond construction adhesives, flooring and specialty adhesives, wood glues, and caulks and sealants, in diverse sizes.
"The breadth of Franklin's offering in solvent-free and VOC-compliant green products firmly establishes us as the long-time leader in adhesives for green building," said Nate Miles, vice president of Franklin's Construction Division. "You don't develop this remarkable product breadth overnight; it only evolves through a 20-year commitment to the environment and our customers."
As part of its commitment to raising industry awareness of green building and to helping its customers choose green alternatives, Franklin also has launched a dedicated GREENchoice Web site. In addition to providing information on Franklin's GREENchoice line and full range of environmentally friendly adhesives, caulks and sealants, the site is intended as an educational resource on green building for the construction industry.
To further support customers in the use of green products, Franklin also has established a dedicated, toll-free green help line. Customers can call 1-888-533-9043 for support in using all GREENchoice adhesives and green Titebond products.
A complete Media Kit is also available.
