AITE Students and Staff Return to School in $42 Million State-of-the-Art Facility
Community cuts ribbon on school’s seventh anniversary.
Stamford, CT (PRWEB) August 31, 2007 -- At 5:15 a.m., what are most high school age students doing? They’re probably rolling over for another hour or two of sleep. If they are students at the Academy of Information Technology & Engineering (www.aitestamford.org) in Stamford, Connecticut, however, they are getting ready to catch the bus for school. Those of us with teenagers are wondering what could cause this phenomenon.
The Academy of Information Technology & Engineering (AITE), in Stamford, CT, the district’s inter-district, college-preparatory, magnet high school, is a nothing like the traditional high-schools most of us attended. Located in a new, futuristic looking building, engaged in educational reform initiatives, and integrating technology, internships, and service learning, the school is a model of what a high school must be for the 21st century. Entering its eighth year of existence, the school’s students are the recipients of an educational environment that expects all of them to be college and career ready upon graduation.
The grand opening of the building includes a ribbon cutting ceremony for AITE on Sept. 4, 2007. The school was previously co-located with a middle school awaiting the completion of its new home. Although housed in temporary quarters to many years, AITE was able to attract a substantial number of students from the community and near-by districts. The dynamic curriculum, experienced and highly qualified faculty, extensive array of technology, and the small school setting have been the difference.
Several years ago, with the dot.com boom still ragging, the original concept of the school was to develop a pipe-line of capable high schools graduates interested in pursuing careers in technology with an eye of working in Stamford. At that time, the creation of the Academy of Information Technology (original name) was considered a novelty, for a number of reasons. For one, Connecticut educators and business spearheaded a plan through the educational bureaucracy to create a magnet high school focused on technology. Secondly, the idea of a school specializing in developing a potential community workforce was very unique.
The Academy was featured in The New York Times, Sept. 2000, as an impressive accomplishment for the state and education. The dream became a reality in about a year -- anyone involved in education knows that’s a miracle. Once more, the Academy was launched for $1 million. Students who may not have been overachievers in the social sciences, excelled in AIT. For instance, some of the students secured jobs at IT managers at corporations such financial firm UBS Warburg in Stamford.
Given its track record and a number of success stories, the state invested $45 million in a 120,000-square foot building, located on the Rippowam Campus in Stamford. The facility consists of 40 class rooms – 25 more rooms than in the former building -- a gymnasium, dance studio, exercise room, library and 350-seat cafeteria. In addition, many of the same people that pushed for the first Academy remain part of the team, including Dr. Christine Casey, former assistant superintendent of Stamford Schools.
When the dot.com bubble burst, the administration and faculty of the school, under the leadership of Paul L. Gross, the principal, redesigned the focus and curriculum of AITE. With the onset of globalization, increased foreign economic and educational competition, and the evolving world situation, AITE moved to provide its students with a world class education, dedicated to the promotion of studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This goal is extended through the requirement that AITE students master four-year sequences in English Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and, a world language. AITE offers French, Spanish, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, and, Arabic.
As for electives, there’s an information technology curriculum that consists of over 30 classes including architectural design, CAD technology, civil engineering, robotics, principles of engineering and digital electronics. Students can take advanced placement courses and college-credit courses provided by University of Connecticut, Norwalk Community College and the University of New Haven. The school also boasts an extensive virtual high school (VHS) program.
Entry is based on the lottery system, said Dr. Casey. Students from within Stamford and neighboring communities, with varying educational backgrounds and skills are encouraged to apply, she said. Students selected agree to the higher standards and expectations and commit to the rigorous curriculum goals.
Dr. Casey said AITE is the first of its kind in the state and probably the nation. Across the country, it is one of a small group of high schools that are trying to develop math, science and technology talent. In 2006, a high school in Philadelphia, with the help of Microsoft, helped build a high-tech school to serve low-income families. The latest technologies are incorporated through out the curriculum. In 2000, San Diego created a charter school to incorporate technology into all aspects of its curriculum. It also offers specialized programs in computer programming and related fields.
AITE has enjoyed a growing waiting list each year as applicants exceed available seats. AITE, which will take 525 students from Stamford, Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk and Ridgefield, to begin this school year, is considered a 21st century school. While focus is on academics and college preparation, the school is a boot camp for students who want to get an education in networking, computer science, graphic arts, engineering, to name a few.
The futuristic design of the building is the vision of Fuller & D’Angelo, Architects, located in Elmsford, NY. The Fusco Construction Company supervised the building of the school.
With the cooperation of faculty, the Stamford BOE and central administration, a business community advisory board, and numerous friends, Mr. Gross’s goal of empowering students to shape the future is a reality.
AITE is accepting applicants for the 2008 – 2009 school year. Open houses are scheduled for December 1, January 10 and January 12. Applications will be available on line starting October 1, 2007. More information regarding AITE can be found at www.aitestamford.org.

Black Interior Designer Showcase (BIDS) Website Takes Lead in Featuring African-American Residential and Commercial Interior Designers
BIDS ezine, www.blackinteriordesigners.com fills a void with its online African-American residential and commercial interior designer showcase and directory. BIDS is also an industry resource for consumers, architects, builders, contractors and furnishings manufacturers.
Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) August 31, 2007 -- The popularity of HGTV, Fine Living and TLC's design shows reflect the dynamic impact designers have on the world and on our lifestyles. Black professional interior designers working in both residential and commercial areas have been asking for years: Where are we as a group? Why aren't there more black interior designers in such a highly publicized and growing career field? The lack of diversity in design is an ongoing discussion, but for Alicia Valair, CID, CKD, Allied Member ASID, founder of Black Interior Designer Showcase, the answer is simple. If African-American youth do not see or hear about black interior designers, how will they know the profession is a viable career option?
"We envision a necessary collaboration with the Council for Interior Design Accreditation and American Society of Interior Designers. We've also approached colleges and universities, various design organizations and industry affiliates prior to launching BIDS." The website's first industry link was to Directory of African-American Architects, a 2007 AIA Award Winner for Collaborative Achievement, co-founded by Dennis Mann, Professor of Architecture at University of Cincinnati.
Though the statistics are fairly undocumented, of the 30,000 members of American Society of Interior Designers, only about 2,000 are African-American. Ironically, never before in the history of the career field has professional design services been so accessible to those wanting the expertise of an interior designer. Yet, black interior designers are virtually invisible and practically unavailable. With increasing focus on the population growth of Latinos, many interior design industry marketers are overlooking the African-American market. Two of every three minority dollars are spent by the black community and a large proportion of that are on household consumer goods.
Despite spending nearly $124 billion on housing, housewares, furnishings, and appliances, black consumers often find it difficult locating black interior designers to assist in making these choices. The online BIDS directory is the first step towards overcoming the challenge. "Our goal in 2008 is to expand the Black Interior Designer Showcase website into an annual hard copy publication and distribute it to consumers, architects, builders and other industry professionals." says BIDS founder, Alicia Valair, Principal of Lifestyle Design Interiors.
Blackinteriordesigners.com is the first and only ezine exclusively featuring African-American residential and commercial interior designers. BIDS is where industry affiliates can locate, interact, build relationships and market to the African-American interior design community and their clients.
In-depth articles on pertinent issues such as green design, sustainable design and Aging-in-Place will feature regularly. Interviews with interior designers, architects, lifestyle experts and furniture designers are scheduled. BIDS' latest editorial collaborations are with expert photographer, Myriam Abdelaziz, a finalist at PHotoEspaňa 2007 and blog writer Jerise Henson, founder of Riclectic.com.
Interior designers and student designers can join the BIDS online directory with an email submission. Consumers can subscribe to the BIDS newsletters. Architects, contractors, builders and remodelers are included in the member networking listing and can also join online. Contract and residential furnishings manufacturers, to the trade showrooms and companies seeking link partnering and online sponsorship opportunities with Black Interior Designer Showcase, contact Alicia Valair directly. Visit the site for more information: www.blackinteriordesigners.com.

(PRWEB) August 30, 2007 -- Profiles International announced today a special promotion for companies wanting to improve the quality of their hiring decisions. For a limited time, Profiles is inviting these companies to try a free online assessment with an existing employee or job candidate. This offer is part of Profiles' effort to help organizations increase the effectiveness of their employment hiring practices and improve employee engagement.
In response to a recently released statistic -- nearly 66 percent of all hires do not meet expectations -- Profiles International is going beyond just explaining the benefits of job matching to actually showing companies how they can improve their hiring odds.
"Profiles International specializes in understanding and objectively measuring competencies, behaviors and interests of employees to insure applicants fit the job the first time," explains Jim Sirbasku, CEO, "When the wrong employee is hired for the wrong job, it leads to an unengaged worker and that is bad for everyone in organization."
Workforce engagement is fast becoming a crisis in many corporations today with up to 80 percent of workers not actively engaged in their jobs. This crisis can result in high employee turnover and, ultimately, impact the overall financial health of a company.
Through a tremendous amount of research, Profiles International has found the first step in addressing employee engagement is to ensure you have the right person in the right job. From there, Profiles International has helped many organizations utilizing Profiles' employment assessments (known to some as employee tests) and job matching to increase their probability of successfully hiring the right candidate from 14 to more than 75 percent.
Mr. Sirbasku continued, "Using job matching to align people and jobs is a positive thing for everyone. It should be a standard part of every hiring and employee evaluation process."
Employers can request a free online job match assessment today by visiting the Profiles International Free PXT Employment Assessment Offer.

Paversearch.com Releases an Extensive Guide to Permeable Pavers
Paversearch, Inc has released an extensive guide to Permeable Pavers.
Carson City, NV (PRWEB) August 30, 2007 -- Paversearch, Inc announces today the release of their extensive guide to Permeable Pavers. You can find this guide and all the information you need to know about Permeable Pavers by visiting www.paversearch.com. This web site provides visitors with an abundance of free and up-to-the minute paving information on all types of pavers and hardscaping resources.
Permeable Pavers can play a large role in protecting our precious water resources, which in the current climate is very important for the environment. The definition of a Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement according to the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) is one that “comprises a layer of solid concrete pavers separated by joints filled with small stones.
Water enters the joints between the pavers and through an “open-graded” base-crushed stone layers with no small or fine particles. The void spaces among the crushed stone store water and infiltrate it back into the soil subgrade. The stones in the joints provide permeability, and the base filters stormwater and helps reduce pollutants.”
“Another benefit of using Permeable Pavers,” says Candace Leary, Media Director, “is that they can also assist in decreasing the risk of flooding and erosion, which we know are terribly harmful to our environment. High speeds of flowing water can cause much damage to our natural landscape as well as man-made structures. Therefore, if more contractors and homeowners start to use permeable pavers for our driveways, pavements, public grounds and parking lots, we can help preserve our environment, natural resources and the quality of our water runoff supplies.”
Permeable Pavers are extremely durable for they are “made with high strength, compressed concrete that resists abrasion, freeze-thaw damage, and degradation from deicing salts. PICP has been proven in the coldest climates. It does not heave and remains stable during freeze and thaw cycles,” according to ICPI. Paversearch.com will provide visitors with a lot more information on the various types of permeable pavers, maintenance advice, applications, costs, FAQ’s, and installation tips.

Weather- and Hurricane-Proofing a House with Through the Roof® from Sashco Helps Prevent Unnecessary Damage
In the wake of dangerous flooding and on the heels of another impending winter and hurricane season, homeowners and contractors alike should prepare their homes early by sealing rooftop items with Through the Roof® from Sashco, to help keep them in tact during severe weather.
Brighton, CO (Vocus/PRWEB ) August 30, 2007 -- Another year of imminent severe winter weather and hurricanes means now is the time for homeowners and housing contractors to prepare their homes. Consecutive years of treacherous weather have devastated areas all across the country.
In preparation for severe weather, contractors and homeowners should walk around the entire roof area to identify any potential problem areas. Areas to look for include:
Skylights, skylight tubes, and roof vents
Nail holes
Lose or missing shingles, tiles, or shakes
Broken or cracked gutters
Damage, holes, or gaps in metal flashing
If these areas are identified, generously apply Through the Roof® clear roof sealant and seal firmly.
Through the Roof® is a clear roof sealant from Sashco Sealants that keeps homes in tact regardless of the weather conditions. Severe weather brings to mind images of blown shingles strewn across yards, and water leaking into the house from the rooftop. Through the Roof® was introduced to offer an alternative to black roof asphalt which can’t endure severe weather changes. Through the Roof® is formulated to perform under the harshest conditions and decrees the odds that roofs will fall prey to damage this winter.
“Wind gusts and severe weather changes put roofs in constant motion. Because asphalt roof repairs dry hard, they can’t handle the degree of movement weather changes cause and result in cracks that allow leaks to return. Through the Roof® is different. Through the Roof® never hardens. Because it stays elastic and flexible, the product will never crack, making it perfect for use on roofs in the most severe climates. Through the Roof® is an ideal solution for homes in hurricane areas. Aggressive adhesion seals roof top items tightly for a permanent seal,” explains Andy Spolestra, a chemist at Sashco.
Unlike asphalt, Through the Roof® can be applied to wet surfaces, an additional benefit for those in wet, rainy climates. Now, homeowners and contractors don’t have to wait for a dry, sunny day to repair a leaky roof; Through the Roof® will stick immediately to a wet roof so it can be repaired right when the leak is identified.
A store owner in the Northeast explains that, “During a rainstorm, our roof was leaking badly. One of our guys went up and applied the brush grade Through the Roof®. Even on the wet roof, it sealed up the leak immediately. To this day it’s still holding up and we’re still reaping the benefits of how well Through the Roof® works.”
Through the Roof® is not only tough, it’s beautiful. Nobody wants areas of ugly, black roof asphalt blemishing the appearance of their beautiful home every time the roof has a leak, a shingle needs to be repaired, or the flashing needs to be sealed. Through the Roof® clear roof sealant is a smart alternative to messy, black asphalt - perfect for custom tile and shake roofs.
Through the Roof® is made of a clear, UV resistant, synthetic rubber-based material that can be applied to most any rooftop material including:
Galvanized metal and aluminum flashing vents, downspouts, copper and brass
PVC and ABS vent pipe
Neoprene and plastic pipe flashing
Brick, block and mortar
Acrylic and polycarbonate skylight plastics
Roofing Materials Fiberglass / asphalt shingles
Cedar shakes, plywood and OSB
Water-based acrylic roof coatings
Cement, slate and glazed tiles
Asphalt roof cement and patch
Through the Roof® is available in a 10 oz. cartridge size that fits any standard caulking gun, as well as quart and gallon size brushable grade.
For more information about Through the Roof® and other Sashco products, visit www.sashco.com, or call 1-800-289-7290.

The Berke Group Identifies the Personality Traits and Talents Separating Top and Bottom Performers
The Berke Group announced today initial findings in a series of studies on the personality and talent attributes separating top and bottom performers in a variety of industries, including new home-building, multi-family and commercial real estate brokerage.
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) August 30, 2007 -- The Berke Group is excited to announce its initial findings in a series of studies on the core personality traits and talents separating top and bottom performers. Utilizing its flagship tool, the Berke Assessment, The Berke Group's team of experts worked with participating companies to determine the key behavioral and talent characteristics separating the "best from the rest" for select roles. The Berke Group's analysis was designed to equip hiring managers with an understanding of the behavioral and talent attributes necessary for success so that they can make better selection decisions.
The Berke Group's first study focused on top and bottom performers in the home-building industry. Over the last two years, The Berke Group conducted a systematic evaluation of the characteristics of top performers in 12 key positions at 49 home-building companies throughout the United States.
Martin Freedland, CEO of The Berke Group, notes that "after studying 3000 home-building professionals, we found that for each job studied, top-performing employees consistently shared behavioral traits and talents that were markedly different from average performers." "For instance," notes Freedland, "We found that top-performing salespeople who share a common set of personality traits out-sold their average-performing peers by a margin of 3 to 1." Freedland continues, "It is clear that top performers often share a common set of traits that can be identified and that are significantly predictive of job performance."
Key study findings include:
1) Top performers have a different set of talents and personality traits than average performers. The Berke Group's research consistently demonstrated that companies and managers who set clear job targets, administered assessments, and used structured interview techniques to identify behavioral matches hired employees who perform at higher levels.
2) Managers frequently don't know which behaviors and talents are critical for success in a given role. Even specialists in hiring were frequently mistaken about the importance of certain behaviors and talents based on the positions for which they were hiring. A contributing factor was the fact that most managers had a strong bias toward their own personality and problem-solving type. While this is a natural tendency, it often results in hiring people who are not a behavioral match with the requirements of a job, resulting in employees who perform at less than acceptable levels.
Each of the 3000 participants who participated in the study completed the Berke Assessment, an online hiring assessment that measures an individual's personality and talent variables compared to the requirements of a specific job as defined by a specific company. Personality variables are those relatively stable qualities that describe how a person relates with others, such as a strong preference for working with people or a strong preference for order and predictability. Talent variables describe a person's natural or hard-wired abilities, such as the ability to think through a complicated problem logically or to come up with a quick and immediate solution to a problem.
The Berke Assessment uniquely equips The Berke Group to conduct these studies as it is one of the only commercially available hiring assessments that measures both personality and natural talents in the same integrated instrument. Moreover, the Berke Assessment's ability to measure the strength of fit between a specific person and a specific job enables The Berke Group to evaluate the core attributes required for success by job and by company.
Kelly Land, President of The Berke Group, comments, "We are blown away by the results of our first study in which clear patterns emerged separating the top and bottom performers for a given role across an industry." He further notes, "We look forward to completing our studies in the multi-family and commercial real estate brokerage industries, as well as expanding into additional industries -- we believe we can consistently determine the core variables predictive of success using the power of the Berke Assessment and our talented team of experts."

American-Israel Chamber of Commerce and The Renaissance Communications Group Launch "Atlanta ROI*" to Attract Israeli Real Estate Investors to the Southeast
The American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Southeast Region (AICC) and The Renaissance Communications Group in October will launch "Atlanta ROI* -- Real Estate Opportunities and Investments," a publication and website (www.atlantaroi.com) to introduce Israeli institutional and entrepreneurial investors to the commercial real estate market in Atlanta and the Southeast. The magazine will support AICC's Real Estate initiative, a key objective of its new Strategic Plan, and will be delivered directly to more than 250 institutional and entrepreneurial investors in Israel.
Atkanta, GA (PRWEB) August 30, 2007 --- The American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Southeast Region (AICC) and The Renaissance Communications Group in October will launch "Atlanta ROI* -- Real Estate Opportunities and Investments," a publication and website (http://www.atlantaroi.com) to introduce Israeli institutional and entrepreneurial investors to the commercial real estate market in Atlanta and the Southeast. The magazine will support AICC's Real Estate initiative, a key objective of its new Strategic Plan, and will be delivered directly to more than 250 institutional and entrepreneurial investors in Israel.
"Atlanta and the Southeast have a long history of generating profitable returns to real estate investors," said Tom Glaser, president, American-Israel Chamber of Commerce. "Atlanta ROI* will create a platform for us to share our story of the continuing growth of our local and regional real estate market. While Israeli institutional and entrepreneurial investors invested more than $3.9 billion in New York, Miami, Los Angeles and Chicago from 2002 and 2006 -more than two-thirds in New York and Miami- Atlanta drew just $40 million of investment."
Glaser added: "Israeli investors know about some spectacular deals in New York City in 2007. They need to know that Atlanta, the business capital of the Southeast, offers its own spectacular opportunities. We are taking the initiative to educate Israel's most active investors and their advisors."
The first issue of Atlanta ROI* will be distributed in October at a special event for Israeli institutional and entrepreneurial investors during the Chamber's Oct. 27 - Nov. 1 mission to Israel. Future issues will be published in February, June and October 2008.
AICC will collaborate with The Renaissance Communications Group (TRCG), an Atlanta-based communications agency, to produce the magazine.
"We were looking for a way to accomplish this important goal, and The Renaissance Communications Group developed a solution that will help us achieve this objective," said Glaser.
According to Mark A. Weiss, the president of TRCG and the magazine's publisher, Atlanta ROI* will be a full-color publication, printed three times a year. The magazine will cover Metro Atlanta's sub markets and focus on the various types of property available for real estate investment including office, multi-family, retail, commercial, hotels, industrial and warehouse, and land. In addition to Atlanta, the magazine will feature other Southeastern cities in future issues.
Weiss said the magazine's objective is to educate Israeli institutional and entrepreneurial investors with content that offers insight into the key role that real estate has played in the development of Metro Atlanta and the Southeast.
Atlanta ROI* will present a convincing case for the Southeast market as an excellent opportunity for real estate investment," said Weiss. "In addition, it will introduce Israeli investors to the outstanding network of real estate and allied professionals in Metro Atlanta and the Southeast."
Atlanta ROI* will be supported by advertising. Larry Reid, the magazine's sales manager, is optimistic the Atlanta and Southeast real estate community will support the magazine.
"Our publication will be delivered directly to the desks of Israeli investors and the institutions that advise them," said Reid. "It will give them 'feet-on-the-street' resources to help them put together deals in the Atlanta and the Southeast. Atlanta ROI* will provide the environment to help them make the initial introductions."
TRCG has developed advertising opportunities, from full-page ads to business directory listings in the magazine to enable businesses of all sizes to participate. Advertising rates and additional information about the publication can be found at http://www.atlantaroi.com
The American-Israel Chamber of Commerce is a bi-national business association with the mission of increasing economic development by fostering understanding, cooperation, and business relationships between Israel and the Southeast. AICC is a proud affiliate of the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta. Since its founding in 1992, AICC has been involved in completed transactions valued at more than $900 million, creating jobs and benefiting the economies of both Israel and the Southeast. Thorburn Associates Helps Kaiser Santa Clara Open its Doors
Thorburn Associates (TA) developed the acoustical design for the newly opened Kaiser Permanente Hospital and Medical Offices. TA is proud to be part of the team creating an outstanding yet inviting Medical Center to serve the Santa Clara, CA community.
Castro Valley, CA (PRWEB) August 30, 2007 -- Thorburn Associates (TA) developed the acoustical design for the newly opened 52-acre Kaiser Permanente Hospital and Medical Offices. Working with Anshen + Allen Architects (http://www.anshen.com/), TA is proud to be part of the team with the shared objectives of creating an outstanding yet inviting Medical Center to serve the Santa Clara, CA community. The facility consists of over 300 beds, 21 operating rooms, a Pediatric Center, 5 pharmacies, 2 lobbies and 2 parking structures. A sky bridge connects the Medical Office Building with the Hospital.
With an interconnected Medical Center, TA's strategies for the acoustical design addressed: speech privacy as required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA); parking garage noise; sound isolation; mechanical noise and vibration control for the central plant and noise from the helipad. Of key concern was lessening the overall noise impact of hospital activities on the local neighborhood.
To lessen the impact of noise from the parking structure, several recommendations were implemented: texturing the floor surface to reduce tire "squeal" noise; moving the staff parking area to below grade; relocating the garage entrance and exits to limit the impact of traffic noise and enclosing the structure to help reduce noise from car doors closing, lock beeps and horns.
To enhance the acoustical environment between birthing suites, examination and hospital rooms, TA looked at sound isolation details including materials used to construct the walls and penetrations through the walls such as ventilation and heating/cooling details. This helps to insure patient privacy during exams to meet HIPAA requirements.
The facility's central plant can have a significant noise impact on the facility as well as the surrounding community. To help lessen this impact, TA reviewed mechanical noise and vibration and sound isolation details. One of the key components was to look at the location of the central plant relative to the rest of the site plan and provide recommendations for the equipment enclosure.
The use of sound absorbing materials for proper room acoustics in lobby and nursing stations gives these areas a warmer, comfortable environment. Noise from the buildings' HVAC systems was controlled to maintain the relaxed atmosphere.
Since this Kaiser facility is not a trauma center, helicopter flights can be scheduled during daytime hours to help keep noise to a minimum. Tyler Rynberg, Senior Acoustical Consultant to the project states, "Several helicopter models were used with varying flight patterns to determine the impact on surrounding residential areas." An assessment for the best helipad location, regulating operating hours as well as controlling the flight path over an already noisy corridor help minimize the helipad's noise impact on the community.
The Medical Center is designed as a pro-active health-care campus incorporating a library and Farmer's Market, healthy eating alternatives in the Cafeteria, play areas for children and tranquil gardens. On land that was once a cherry orchard, Kaiser has continued that theme through color and in the gardens that inhabit all of the structure's four floors. Abundant natural lighting helps create the welcoming and warm environment this Kaiser facility has achieved. Artwork hangs on almost every wall; vibrant colors infuse the décor---there is even wallpaper designed and signed by John Lennon in the Pediatric Center.
The new Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center is now open to serve the community. http://www.kaisersantaclara.org/

Cabinet Manufacturer Doubles Size of its Company in Three Years
Using business sense to determine what buyers want while delivering a quality product, a Sioux Falls cabinet manufacturer sees double-digit growth in 2007 while other cabinet companies experience a steady decline in sales.
Sioux Falls, SD (PRWEB) August 30, 2007 -- In just three years, StarMark Cabinetry - a Sioux Falls cabinet manufacturer - has grown from $48 million in annual sales to more than $100 million. As a result, the company has doubled in size during this time period.
In an industry that is declining at a rate of 14%, StarMark (www.starmarkcabinetry.com) continues to enjoy double-digit growth in 2007. The kitchen and bathroom cabinet manufacturer's compound annual growth rate since 2004 is 26.6%.
StarMark Cabinetry's NCR hovers at 1 percent; NCR means "no charge replacement." It measures how many dollars of product is replaced for every $100 of product that leaves the plant. Other cabinet manufacturers competing in the semi-custom cabinetry category have an NCR ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 percent. To a business owner selling kitchens, it's the difference between three or four kitchens needing work in a given week, or just the odd kitchen needing a tweak.
StarMark's focus on always improving one or more aspects of production increases sales and reduces costs. Consider:
In the first four months of 2007, StarMark Cabinetry saved $98,750 because the cabinet manufacturer reduced the errors made building and finishing cabinet doors.
In 2006, Continuous Improvement initiatives saved the company $494,000. In 2005, the savings were $319,000.
StarMark Cabinetry realized these savings while bringing on board an additional 209 employees in the last two years.
"This type of performance is a win-win for everyone," said John Swedeen, president of StarMark Cabinetry. "Homeowners are happy, and they refer our dealers to friends and family. Our dealers' businesses improve. Best of all is what it enables us to do for the people of StarMark, to give our employees profit-sharing bonuses and to increase the company match of their 401K contributions.
"To me," said Swedeen, who's been with StarMark Cabinetry nine years, "that's the real win."

Angie's List to Offer National Safety Training on Avoiding Lead Poisoning: Experts to Test Product Lead Levels, Check Children's Blood-lead Levels, Train Contractors and DIYers
Angie's List and teams of experts will tour the nation for eight weeks to offer testing and safety training on lead poisoning. The Angie's List Lead Safety Tour will also offer training to help contractors safely work around lead-based paint.
(PRWEB) August 29, 2007 -- In an effort to educate the public about the dangers of lead poisoning, Angie's List and teams of experts will criss-cross the nation during the next eight weeks to offer homeowners lead testing and safety training on avoiding situations that could irreversibly harm their children. The Angie's List Lead Safety Tour will also offer training to help contractors safely work around lead-based paint.
Angie's List, the national consumer organization that helps homeowners find reliable help in more than 280 categories of service, including painting and remodeling, is offering the safety training and testing free to the public. Experts will discuss the dangers that lead poisoning pose and will offer:
Testing opportunities:
Lead-level testing for household products and toys
Blood-lead level testing for children
Training opportunities
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approved safety training for contractors who work with lead-based paint
Informal seminar for homeowners about what they need to know when hiring a contractor who will disturb lead-based paint
Tutorial for do-it-yourselfers who will disturb lead-based paint
The Angie's List Lead Safety Tour will be presented in Atlanta; Boston; Chicago; Cleveland; Columbus, Ohio; Denver; Detroit; Houston; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; Miami; New York City; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Portland, Ore.; San Diego; San Francisco; St. Louis; Tampa, Fla.; and Washington DC. Additional cities may be added. Visit http://leadsafety.angieslist.com for details on the tour schedule.
The tour was developed in response to an Angie's List investigation into contractors' lead-safe work practices. During the investigation, Angie's List staff contacted nearly 200 companies whose employees regularly disturb lead paint during the course of their work. Responders from one-third of the companies, even when prompted with specific questions about lead-based paint, gave advice that could put people, especially young children, in danger. Lead poisoning can cause irreversible brain damage to young children.
Federal housing officials estimate that 24 million American homes contain dangerous levels of lead-based paint, which was commonly used prior to 1978 when it was banned from use. When working on homes built before 1978, contractors are required by federal law to notify owners and tenants that they may be disturbing lead-based paint. The law also requires them to provide homeowners with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's pamphlet, "Protect Your Family from Lead in Your Home."
A nationwide poll of Angie's List members found that 51 percent live in a home built prior to 1978. Of those members, 75 percent said their contractor failed to warn them about the possible dangers of lead-based paint, and 85 percent never received the pamphlet.
"We find the results of this investigation alarming," said Angie Hicks, founder of Angie's List. "We are concerned that our members are being given incorrect information about lead-based paint. The goal of this tour is to bring together experts who can educate the public about the hazards associated with lead."
Because lead-based paint is present in so many homes, it poses danger for every income-level. Angie's List CEO, Bill Oesterle, was rehabbing an older home in Indianapolis when his then two-year-old daughter suffered the effects of lead poisoning.
"My family learned firsthand how damaging lead poisoning can be to young children," Oesterle said. "It is important to me that Angie's List helps educate the public and contractors about this issue so that other families can avoid exposing their children to this toxin. This is an avoidable situation, and education is truly our greatest weapon."
Angie's List is where consumers turn to get the real scoop on local contractors and companies in more than 280 different categories. Currently, more than 500,000 consumers across the U.S. rely on Angie's List to help them find the right contractor or company for the job they need done. Members have unlimited access to the list via Internet or phone; receive the Angie's List magazine, which includes articles on home improvement and maintenance, consumer trends and scam alerts; a monthly newsletter with even more information and coupons; and they can utilize the Angie's List complaint resolution service. Nanovations New Product for Concrete and Masonry Makes Common Surface Sealer Unnecessary
Nanovations Pty Ltd is introducing a product that is a break through in concrete and masonry protection technology.
Sydney, Australia (PRWEB) August 29, 2007 -- Common surface sealants for concrete and masonry tend to wear off and be subject to weathering and abrasion, and need regular re-applications. Now Nanovations Pty Ltd is introducing a product that is a new revolutionary concept in concrete and masonry protection technology.
The product, known as 3001, is simply added to the concrete or masonry during the mixing process, providing it with water repellent properties and outstanding protection from efflorescence (the formation of white powder on the surface of the concrete), salt damages, and moss and algal growth.
3001 significantly reduces rising damp, thereby preventing paint bubbling and lifting of exposed surfaces. It also results in masonry being more stain resistant, by significantly reducing the ingress of liquid water and any dissolved salts and dirt that the water may carry. It also protects colored concrete products from unsightly discolorations.
3001 protects pavers used in coastal areas or near swimming pools from salt and chlorine damage. Concrete with added 3001 is water vapor permeable. However, after the normal curing time, the concrete or masonry product has a significantly lower water absorption rate than that of untreated concrete.
The bulk impregnation for complete concrete parts, pavers and masonry or roof tiles can't be worn off like surface treatments.
Surface abrasion and high traffic which usually wears off any sealer will not affect the treatment and the function.
Concrete treated with 3001 is also frost/thaw resistant, which makes it especially suitable for climates with severe winters including North America, and northern Europe and Asia.
Because of Nanovations 3001's mass impregnation technology, common water repellent surface sealants are no longer required. In addition, concrete additives for salt resistance and the prevention of efflorescence can be avoided. Unlike common surface sealants, 3001 requires no re-application, saving considerable expense and inconvenience.
"3001 is completely water-based and VOC free," says Harry Stulajter, Director of Nanovations. "This is the long awaited technology to avoid millions of gallons of polluting solvents currently used in penetrating sealers. The product has been tested for salt resistance, efflorescence, water absorption and frost/thawing behavior."
Nanovations welcomes enquiries from concrete, pavers and masonry manufacturers, as well as concrete mould producers and any professional organizations involved in the industry.
To find out more about Nanovations 3001 please visit our website at http://www.nanovations.com.au

HBH Gas Systems Announces New Environmental Impact Statistics for Central Propane Distribution Systems
HBH Gas Systems announced new environmental statistics for their off grid central propane distribution systems. A single home using an HBH Gas System for water and space heating in lieu of electricity eliminates approximately 8.5 tons of carbon emissions per year, effectively offsetting the carbon emissions from one average vehicle.
Austin, TX (PRWEB) August 29, 2007 -- Today, HBH Gas Systems announced new environmental statistics for their off grid central propane distribution systems. Their new statistics are based largely on a recent study conducted by Energetics, Inc. for the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC). HBH Gas Systems specializes in the marketing, design, and implementation of fully-engineered Central Gas Distribution Systems. Each system allows the homes in an off grid community to be supplied with propane from a single facility, eliminating the need for individual tanks. The gas is distributed, metered, serviced and billed just like natural gas.
HBH Gas Systems has partnered with Ferrellgas to provide developments located off the natural gas grid with clean-burning propane from a single tank. Central gas distribution systems provide developments with the economic convenience and efficiency of an environmentally responsible gas product endorsed by the EPA as an alternative green fuel.
A single home using an HBH Gas System for water and space heating in lieu of electricity eliminates approximately 8.5 tons of carbon emissions per year, effectively offsetting the carbon emissions from one average vehicle. Fueling the water and space heating requirements of an average 500 home development with a central propane system instead of electricity offsets about 4,250 tons of carbon emissions per year. Propane is an EPA approved alternative energy per the Clean Air and Energy Policy Acts.
Propane-powered water heaters produce 60% less carbon emissions than electric powered water heaters. Propane is non-toxic and insoluble, so it offers minimal risk to aquifer and ground water supplies. In addition, 30 houses with wood-burning fireplaces create as much particulate pollution as 30,000 houses with gas fireplaces.

Modern Design is Alive & Well in Orlando
HuntonBrady Architects' iconic buildings mark Central Florida's landscape for 60 years.
Orlando, FL (PRWEB) August 29, 2007 -- Decades of Timeless Design - that's the phrase that best sums up HuntonBrady Architects (http://www.huntonbrady.com) in its 60th anniversary year of business. The firm has grown with the community, and its body of work reflects the educational, commercial and residential changes of 60 years in Orlando. They will celebrate their anniversary on September 6, 2007, with Orlando officials declaring it HuntonBrady Architects' 60th Anniversary Day in Orlando.
In 1947, Robert B. Murphy, a Harvard-educated architect and WWII veteran from South Carolina, retired from the Army Air Corp and put down roots in Orlando. He started his own architecture firm: Robert B. Murphy, Architect. When Bob retired in 1979, the firm was known as Murphy Hunton Shivers & Brady. Sixty years after the firm was founded, and a few more name changes down the road, Bob's legacy lives on in HuntonBrady Architects' devotion to creative collaboration with clients and timeless design.
Over the years, the firm has employed a wealth of talented area architects whom eventually served as Principals in the firm: Claude Shivers, Tom Hunton, Clyde Brady, Fred Pryor, Maurizio Maso, Steve Belflower, and current President Chuck Cole.
What's the benchmark of a HuntonBrady project? A clear modernist sensibility, says Cole. HuntonBrady's architecture is distinguished by simplified forms, sleek details, integration of color, pattern and texture.
"Though modern in design, all our projects are representative of their eras, and very appropriate to their time and place," Cole explained. "I think an equally important benchmark of a HuntonBrady building is the high standard we've always placed on creative collaboration with our clients, so that they have ownership in the final design, as well."
HuntonBrady's team has designed a number of Central Florida landmarks, including (in chronological order):
1. The City of Orlando Firehouse at Marks & Ferncreek - 1950s
2. The two-story round American Federal Building, located across from City Hall on Orange Avenue (subsequent stories were added later) - 1960s
3. The Central Branch of the YMCA - 1960s
4. The first four buildings on the new University of Central Florida campus in east Orlando: the Science Building, the Library Building, the Student Center and the Dormitories - 1970s
5. The first patio homes in Central Florida at The Springs - 1970s
6. Over ten buildings on the new Valencia Community College Campus on Kirkman Road - 1970s
7. A deluge of Eighties office buildings including Sabal Center, Maitland Colonnades, Southtrust Bank Building, and 2600 Maitland Center.
8. The Team Disney Corporate Headquarters building, a joint project with renowned architect Arata Isozaki of Tokyo - 1980x
9. The Orange County Convention Center Phase III Addition - 1990s
10. A wealth of Class A office buildings designed in the Nineties that make up the Heathrow International Business Center, seen from I-4.
11. Fiserv CBS worldwide headquarters in Lake Mary - 2000s
The firm has been recognized both statewide and nationally with a number of design awards. In 1995, they were named Firm of the Year by the Florida American Institute of Architects (AIA). And two Principals, Clyde Brady and Maurizio Maso, were honored with the distinguished Design Honor Award, the highest award the Florida AIA bestows upon an individual in recognition of an outstanding portfolio of architectural achievement.
In 1980, Clyde Brady started HuntonBrady's coveted annual holiday poster tradition as a way to celebrate the holidays and share the firm's passion for architecture with the community. Their popularity grew as word spread and collections started. Now the posters grace the walls of homes, offices and institutions all over the world.
Today, a staff of 75 people makes the wheels turn in their current location at 800 North Magnolia, a collaborative modern design by its architects and interior design staff. Their core business concentrations are divided among healthcare, education, commercial, biotechnology and research laboratories, medical office buildings, interior architecture, religious, and private projects. Current HuntonBrady projects in Central Florida include the Florida Hospital 15-story Patient Tower near downtown, interior design services for Orlando Utility Commissions new "green" headquarters, Seminole Community College's Heathrow Technology Center and new Altamonte Springs campus, and the University of Central Florida College of Medicine.
Cole explains, "We remain dedicated to the high standards set by our founder, Bob Murphy, to creatively collaborate with clients, maintain high ethical standards, and contribute to the community. We plan to be here 60 more years."

London, United Kingdom (PRWEB) August 28, 2007 -- Management Events are pleased to announce that leading BPM luminaries and vendors will present and exhibit at the upcoming Project Challenge Exhibition in London on the 19th and 20th September. Project Challenge is the UK's only exhibition style event for vendors to showcase their BPM and Process products alongside other key products for the efficient running and managing of projects and programmes.
The Process Performance Zone, as it is called, will feature a dedicated and free to delegate's seminar zone, confirmed speakers include John Pyke, Ian Gotts and Mark McGregor alongside key vendors including K2, Casewise, MEGA, Alphacourt, Cordys, Global 360 and BEA Systems.
Project Challenge, now in its 10th year, has long been seen as a must visit event for anyone interested in seeing and hearing about the latest in technology and services to support effective project and program management. The show features over 100 exhibitors and regularly draws in over 1,100 visitors.
Richard White, Managing Director of Management Events, said, "The addition of the BPM and Process area this year is already proving popular with registering delegates and we are anticipating a good response to the free seminar program we have put together. We are proud that from a vendor perspective we have put together the UK's only low cost, high value, high traffic event of its kind."

Luxury Mortgage Group Co-Launches VIP Hot Deal Buyer Program
Luxury Mortgage Group, a direct lender based in Las Vegas, Nevada has co-launched an innovative service for buyers of Las Vegas luxury high rise condos. The new service is called the VIP Hot Deal Buyer Program. The program provides motivated sellers with an outlet to quickly dispose of their real estate and gives buyers of Las Vegas high rise condominiums new opportunities to purchase exceptionally priced real estate under the currently challenging market conditions.
Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) August 28, 2007 -- Luxury Mortgage Group, a direct lender based in Las Vegas, Nevada has co-launched an innovative service for buyers of Las Vegas luxury high rise condos.
To create the VIP Hot Deal Buyer Program, Luxury Mortgage Group’s President Jason Fox, has teamed up with Luxury Realty Group’s, Broker/Owners, Bruce Hiatt and Simon Chen. Both companies, while independently owned and operated, exclusively provide high end luxury real estate services and are well poised to work together for the betterment of client’s interests.
Motivated sellers greatly benefit from the VIP Hot Deal Buyer Program by being able to quickly liquidate real estate due to looming foreclosure, being unable to close on a new high rise purchase, or other challenging market conditions that affect them. For developers of luxury condos with excess new inventory, it offers them a direct outlet to reduce their inventory. For buyers, it offers discounted Las Vegas luxury high rise condo opportunities in prime Las Vegas core strip locations.
Only a select number of buyers will be admitted into the VIP Hot Deal Buyer Program. All buyers will first need to be pre-qualified by Luxury Mortgage Group and certain restrictions apply. Once approved, those selected for entry into the VIP Hot Deal Buyers Program will have access to the hot deals from Luxury Mortgage Group and Luxury Realty Group including both companies’ exclusive and private high rise condo deals.
“This is an amazing opportunity for developers, sellers and especially buyers of luxury high rise condos,” says Aaron Ainehsazan, Vice President of Luxury Mortgage Group. “The VIP Hot Deal Buyer Program makes a wonderful addition to our exemplary commitment to the finest level of super jumbo mortgage services that our clientele has come to expect. We co-created this special VIP program because of the many calls we receive from sellers and developers motivated to sell their luxury condos below market price as well as our established clientele seeking great luxury deals. By teaming up with the #1 luxury high rise real estate brokerage in Las Vegas, we have opened up an unprecedented number of additional opportunities for our clients. As the only Las Vegas mortgage direct lender to specifically focus on the financing of high rise condos, condo-tels and luxury homes, we are proud to be a part of this offering,” Ainehsazan said.
“As new multi-billion dollar projects come to fruition in the core strip area and lending guidelines continue to tighten, many buyers that are sitting on the fence will regret not purchasing now. Many people do not realize that even with an 850 FICO score that certain mortgage programs are no longer available. The current mortgage programs such as high loan-to-value loans and stated income / stated asset programs we have available today will be unattainable in the very near future. Additionally, land prices have gone from $4 Million to over $34 Million an acre and the actual construction costs to build high rise buildings is outpacing their current price per square foot. As inflation continues to rise, today’s market price will be unavailable,” says Jason Fox, President of Luxury Mortgage Group. “Because of Las Vegas’ strong local economy and international tourism appeal, we are very bullish on the Las Vegas high rise real estate market. We are seeing savvy international investors purchasing condos and locking them in at today’s low 30 year fixed interest rates while many US buyers fail to see the opportunities that are currently at hand,” Fox said.
Luxury Mortgage Group, Founded by Luxury Financier, Jason Fox, is the only direct lender with a core niche focus of financing high rise condos, condo hotels and the most noble of luxury homes in the nation. Recognized by national press, media and peers alike as the leader in luxury finance, Luxury Mortgage Group continues to serve as the most exclusive financier in the world. While others diversify, Luxury Mortgage Group remains committed to what’s best.

Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) August 28, 2007 -- Stone Age Designs announces plans to introduce Scagliola Stone™ to architects and designers of high rise construction projects. Stone Age Designs, an Atlanta-based maker of Scagliola Stone™ Fireplace Mantels, and Kitchen Hoods has opened a new commercial division targeting upscale office buildings, financial institutions, apartments, hotels, and retail centers that demand the beauty of Hand-Crafted Scagliola Stone™.
With the soaring number of buildings under construction nationwide, the high rise buildings market is definitely a hot niche within the slowing construction industry. According to Emporis (2007-08), there are 22 high-rise buildings under construction in Atlanta alone, and another 16 high rise projects have been already approved by city officials. Most of these upscale buildings are clearly aimed at a high-end clientele who know quality, craftsmanship and want the best. Clearly it is the same clientele who know and seek out the Scagliola Stone™ Fireplace Mantels and Kitchen Hoods from Stone Age Designs for their fine homes.
Founded in the late 1990's by Thierry François, Stone Age Designs offers a significant product portfolio that ranges from Hand-Carved Limestone and Scagliola Stone™ Fireplace Mantels to Hand-Crafted Scagliola Stone™ Kitchen Hoods and Architectural Accents. Superb craftsmanship is the trademark that brings people to the Stone Age Designs Showcase, and the reason more and more discriminating architects and homeowners select their designs over a cast stone mantel, kitchen hood, or concrete products.
Inspired by his work over the years with architects and designers, Thierry François has brought his masterful eye and unrivaled expertise to the creation of both the Scagliola Stone™ Fireplace Mantel and Kitchen Hood collections. Thierry and his team have drawn from a variety of historical periods and styles, adhering to authentic architectural standards and proportions, to present exquisite lines of Scagliola Stone™ fireplace mantels and kitchen hoods that provide elegant alternatives to designs like those in pre-cast stone.
With a variety of scales and styles, from grand and majestic to delicate and understated; from classical to country French; the Scagliola Stone™ Fireplace Mantels, Kitchen Hoods, and Architectural Accents from Stone Age Designs are sure to enhance any room whether in a grand mansion or a penthouse apartment. In little more than a decade, the Hand-Crafted Scagliola Stone™ products of Stone Age Designs have become market leaders and are well-known among homeowners, as well as the design, architectural and builder communities.

American Global Business Inc. Provides Business Resources via New Platform
American Global Business, Inc. introduces small and medium sized businesses to global markets with its new business platform. The platform addresses business resources, business strategy and more at an affordable price.
Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) August 28, 2007 -- American Global Business, Inc. has created a new platform for business strategy that offers business resources, marketing and exposure to members, giving them a direct link to global markets at an affordable price.
Global business has positively affected the bottom line of some American companies in a good and sometimes great financial manner. Yet, many small to medium sized businesses have not exploited the opportunity to go global. Two of the main reasons are the expense that the global markets will demand and the lack of resources.
"Small to medium sized businesses from different parts of the world must unite, communicate and sell their products and services to anyone on earth who has access," says the architect of American Global Business, Inc., Dr. Mohammed Ismail Khan PhD, President/CEO, who has spent several years intensely researching American and global business markets. "The Internet has made it possible for faster communications and additional business resources, leading to successful transactions between business-to-business and business-to-consumers on a daily basis."
Dr. Khan made a decision to create an American-based customer service call/chat center, instead of outsourcing those services to other countries. "Customer service has been the hallmark of American business for many years," says Dr. Khan. "American Global Business, Inc.'s goal is to create jobs in America for Americans, assisting in our own little way to make a contribution to the American economy."
American Global Business, Inc. members will have access to a complete business resource and support system, and will be showcased and promoted through AGB Television International, AGB Magazine and E-Zine, a bi-monthly newsletter and live and virtual conventions. In the spring of 2008, AGB will branch out across America with AGB Conferences and Expos, which will give members an opportunity to meet face to face for networking and deal making.
Dr. Khan's vision is to close the business gap and open global markets to everyone, thus leveling the playing field by offering all industry entrepreneurs the opportunity to compete and witness success. This is what American Global Business is all about. American Global Business, Inc.'s platform and access to global markets is available for $365 annually.
Dr. Khan established a sister company designed to support the membership of American Global Business, Inc. American Management Consulting Services, LLC (www.GoAMCS.com) will provide myriad business strategy services, including product launches and marketing on AGB TV, International American Global Business Magazine and E-Zine, as well as connect businesses to buyers and sellers across the world.
