The Achilles Heel of the NASA Space Shuttle Fleet is Highlighted in the Novel Deorbit the Space Shuttle: Stem Cell Rescue
Deorbit the Space Shuttle: Stem Cell Rescue, by Neil Mavis, is a non-stop action novel that highlights the Achilles heel of the NASA space shuttle fleet and imagines a future shuttle flight all too terrifyingly real. Free reading of the first seven chapters is available at www.deorbit.com
(PRWEB) January 31, 2005 -- “… blood spraying the white cabin walls of Space Shuttle Atlantis flashed across television screens worldwide” begins this near-future techno-thriller, a provocative novel by Tulsa, Oklahoma author Neil Mavis that dramatizes the terrifying possibilities of a space shuttle rescue mission gone awry.
Space shuttle Atlantis is stranded when “the Achilles heel of the space shuttle - a single point of failure - has been damaged.” Mavis verified the shuttle’s Achilles heel during discussions with a NASA space shuttle commander.
Deorbit the Space Shuttle: Stem Cell Rescue (Heuristic Publishing; Publication Date: April 11, 2005; $16.95 ISBN 0-9763863-0-5) is a thought-provoking and page-turning novel that showcases timely topics such as private spacecraft, medical marijuana, and stem cell research in zero gravity.
With only a few hours left for the shuttle crew, Scott, a NASA outsider with an almost impossible idea, suggests a risky plan that has never before been considered. The government backpedals because Scott has a marijuana arrest, and no academic credentials. Senator Graff reverses his support to rescue Atlantis when he learns his candidacy will be ruined if Scott uses the technology the senator intentionally scrapped.
In a thrilling race against the clock, and no other options remaining, Flight Director Glen Minns reluctantly agrees to Scott’s rescue plan in spite of Senator Graff’s protests. The rescue could doom the Senator, and the manned space program, along with Scott and his mother. In a surprise ending, no one will know until it's too late to turn back.

MilitaryJobHunts.com Introduces The Job Hunt Launch Service as the Answer To Speedy Military Career Transitions
Comprehensive, Low Cost, High Quality Service Expedites Job Search for Enlisted, Military Retiree, First Time, or Hard-to-Place Career Transitioning Veterans.
Libertyville, IL (PRWEB) January 30, 2005 -- MilitaryJobHunts.com, the leading competitive counseling and job hunt assistance provider for military veterans in a career transition, today announced the introduction of its Job Hunt Launch Service. This service is a comprehensive, low cost, high quality, job hunt service that provides the job-seeking military veteran with the documents, information and step-by-step strategy plans to launch an efficient and productive career transition.
Education and certifications are always a major concern to transitioners as well as communicating military skills in a clear, persuasive manner. Credentials and communication are in themselves two mountains to climb for the transitioning military veteran. But military transitioners must struggle with yet another--job market competition.
Despite having education and a great resume, these alone do not guarantee an easy, quick career transition. Job market competition can impede the progress of a successful job hunt. Intense job competition is the wild card of speedy career transitions, especially when using online jobs websites, the most difficult way to find a job for most people despite their growing popularity in the employee acquistion strategies of most companies.
To have a speedy career transition, military career transitioners must learn how to position themselves in the jobs market to reduce their competition and enhance their "competitive sell" to improve their hiring appeal.
Being a competitive counseling service, MilitaryJobHunts.com offers personalized, low cost assistance for military job hunters that ensures a military transitioner is conducting a competitive job hunt.
"Our typical client is the hard-to-place, beginner or serial job hunter who has been looking for over 4 months. Through our experience, we have found that military career transitions have less to do with skill gaps or resume quality, than waging a competitive job hunt campaign," says Randall Scasny, Director of MilitaryJobHunts.com. "In response, we have developed a service, The Job Hunt Launch Service, which has been effective at getting long-term job hunters on track again."
What Is The Job Hunt Launch Service?
The Job Hunt Launch Service is a comprehensive approach to starting military transition job hunts. The service includes:
1. A competitive job skills analysis relative to current industry needs.
2. Re-directing military-focused resumes to industry-targeted, database searchable, "deep" resumes.
3. Writing industry-targeted, persuasive cover letters that emphasize the transitioner's "competitive sell."
4. Identifying a job hunter's most competitive industry sectors of employment.
5. Providing job hunters with contextual business intelligence on the job hunter's competitive industry sectors of employment.
6. Providing target company lists where a job hunter would be competitive.
6. Developing a step-by-step job hunt strategy plan including the 15 known methods of job hunting.
7. Assisting the job hunter in navigating the online job hunting venue.
8. Providing email support for 4-6 weeks using the "buddy system" approach.
Who Would Benefit from the Job Hunt Launch Service?
Obtaining personalized, high quality transition assistance is expensive. Typically, this type of assistance is available only to executive-level transitioners while middle-level and entry-level career transitioners tend to be priced out of the market. The Job Hunt Launch Service changes that. It offers a low cost, high quality job assistance service directed to military transitioners of any skills level.
"Most of our customers are enlisted service members, with the vast majority being new retirees," says Scasny. "They are bright people who have good resumes and credentials yet lack the necessary business information to target an industry and measure their competitiveness. The Job Hunt Launch service provides this information to them and a step-by-step plan on how to wage a competitive job hunt."
What Makes The Job Hunt Launch Service Different From Other Transition Assistance Services?
Why should a transitioner subscribe to The Job Hunt Launch Service if they are already using resume writing, career counseling, and recruiting and placement services?
Resume writing services, career counseling and recruiting services do not answer the needs of the chronic, long-term military job hunter. Competitive counseling does.
"What long-term job hunters need is a service that teaches them about the industry they wish to enter, where they need to market (and not market) themselves to improve their competitive position within it, and how to strategize a job hunt campaign so they have a "performing" job hunt, that is, they are getting called for job interviews," says Scasny.
But the most important difference between The Job Hunt Launch Service and other transition assistance services is whom MilitaryJobHunts.com employs to help the transitioning military veteran.
Most transition assistance is provided by recruiters or professional job counselors. While these professionals are effective at resume development and possess the knowledge of job assistance services available to veterans, this group lacks the knowledge base to perform competitive job hunt analyses.
To perform a competitive analysis, a different kind of "job counselor" is needed. A counselor who is an expert at industry-based knowledge, including the companies within an industry, industry trends, current products, geographic business hubs, and an industry's business drivers.
"The most unique part of our service is whom we employ to perform the work: business reporters and editors who have broad-based, multi-industry knowledge and experience. They apply the investigative skills of business journalism to competitive counseling," says Scasny.
MilitaryJobHunts.com's reporter-consultants first determine which industries a military job hunter would be competitive in. Then they provide job hunters details about their target industry (or sub-sector of a major industry) to give them a business context that forms the basis of competitive positioning. Once military job hunters understand the industry they are seeking employment in, the reporter-consultants localize the transitioners' job hunts by forming a practical job hunt strategy, including all the known methods of job hunting (there are 15 of them) for their geographical home.
"We become our customers' 'buddies' for 4-6 weeks, giving them email support until their job hunts are productive. Frequently, they are getting calls for interviews by the time we end our email support," says Scasny.
How Much Does The Job Hunt Launch Service Cost?
The most attractive feature of the service is the modest price. Most services of this nature have a high-price tag. These high-priced services are simply out of the reach of most enlisted career transitioners. Even officers pursuing management positions who can afford the fat fee tend to experience "sticker shock" and weigh the real advantages of such a service before putting their money down.
This all adds up to one thing: military job hunters are not getting the help they need. The Job Hunt Launch Service changes that.
There are two levels of pricing for The Job Hunt Launch Service.
**Individual Level: Individuals can subscribe to The Job Hunt Launch service for a flat fee of $199.
**Affiliate Level: For those organizations who would like to add competitive counseling to their arsenal of job hunter support services, MilitaryJobHunts.com offers an affiliate partnership contract that includes:
1. All features of the individual level are included in the affiliate level. (However, the affiliate level emphasizes the "Train the Trainer" concept of assistance.)
2. Two annual on-site visits to your location to conduct staff or job hunter training on How To Conduct a Competitive Job Hunt.
3. Regular Industry Update Specification Reports (IUSRs) that summarize industry trends, markets and noteworthy competitive factors for military job hunters.
4. Daily email or telephone support to provide coaching and job hunt "troubleshooting" services.
The Affiliate Program cost is a flat rate of $5,500 per year. (This is equal to about 26 individual subscriber fees, making it a cost-effective way to enhance a medium-to-large transition assistance office's palette of services.)

Markland Develops Software Based Thermal Sight Training Program for US Army
Sophisticated Software Program Assists Soldiers in Training to Operate Night Vision Equipment in Realistic Virtual Environment
Ridgefield, CT (PRWEB) January 30, 2005 -- Markland Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: MRKL), a defense and homeland security company transforming advanced laboratory technology into real-world products, announced today that it has completed development of an advanced computer software-based thermal sight training program under a contract with the U.S. Army. The announcement was made by Robert Tarini, Chairman and CEO of Markland.
The computer software-based thermal sight training program was developed under an agreement with the U.S. Army's Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD). While the curriculum and content is primarily developed by the government, EOIR Technologies Inc, a wholly owned subsidiary of Markland Technologies is the primary software developer.
The night vision training software helps soldiers learn to identify the thermal signatures of combat vehicles through the use of an interactive curriculum that teaches the unique patterns and shapes of vehicle ‘hotspots,’ and overall vehicle shapes. The training software also provides soldiers with practical experience in the use of their thermal sensor image controls. Through the use of virtual sight controls, soldiers learn to effectively adjust their thermal image to find targets and bring out their thermal identification cues.
“I am proud of our highly skilled and dedicated workforce at EOIR Technologies, and pleased that once again we have worked so successfully with the US Army’s talented personnel at the Night Vision Laboratory to jointly produce a very important training tool for our soldiers,” said Mr. Tarini. “The virtual training environment provided by this effort allows the US Army to train more soldiers faster and more effectively on the operation of night vision equipment. Ultimately, this results in a better-trained and better-equipped U.S. military.”
The Army's NVESD research and development group is one of the U.S. military's most advanced technological leaders and has been responsible for numerous key innovations in the fields of optical electronics and thermal imaging for weapons targeting, electronic surveillance and other mission-critical military applications. Markland is working on a range of next-generation technology solutions for the NVESD, including night vision and advanced sensor applications, and other threat-detection systems. This product development effort was performed under an ongoing five-year omnibus contract which may provide a maximum award ceiling amount of up to $80 million in fiscal year revenues for Markland. The contract has a potential value of approximately $406 million over the life of the contract.

Teamwork is the key, says TSA Friendship Award Winner at Washington Dulles Airport
Air Serv Corporation's employee wins the TSA Friendship Award for his communication and cooperation as a lobby director at Dulles International Airport.
Washington, DC (PRWEB) January 27, 2005 -- Juan Irizarry-Guiot was surprised to receive the Transportation Security Administration's TSA Friendship Award, which he received for his communication and cooperation when he worked as a lobby director for Air Serv at the Dulles International Airport. He started in that position three years ago and his responsibilities included keeping communication open between TSA and the lobby, working on directing lines of passengers. Juan now works as a duty manager. "I serve as a liaison between Air Serv and other areas and make sure everything is running smoothly," said Juan. His background in the military, from which he retired in 1987, must come in handy.
Juan, who is originally from Puerto Rico, says he loves everything about working for Air Serv. "The people, the company, the whole nine yards," he said. He believes he received the award because of the wonderful relationship that exists between him and his people with TSA. "We have such good communication and work so wonderfully as a team," he said. "I got to develop a lot of friendships with the screening managers at TSA."
It's nice to hear they were so cheery during those early shifts - Juan's hours had been from 4:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. He sleeps just slightly later now, working from 6:00 to 2:30.
"It's important to always have a good attitude," he said. "Just keep a smile on your face."

CorActive Intros an Efficient, Highly Doped Polarization Maintaining Erbium Fiber
CorActive, an independent manufacturer of advanced specialty optical fiber products, announces general availability of an efficient, high absorption Polarization Maintaining (PM) Erbium doped single clad fiber.
Quebec City, Quebec (PRWEB) January 27, 2005 -- CorActive, an independent manufacturer of advanced specialty optical fiber products, announces general availability of an efficient, high absorption Polarization Maintaining (PM) Erbium doped single clad fiber. This CorActive Erbium Doped Fiber has been specifically designed to maximize absorption while maintaining an efficient energy transfer to enable optimized C & L band PM laser and EDFA applications.
CorActive’s Er-25-05-PM features a highly doped photosensitive Erbium core in a panda-style polarization maintaining fiber and offers very high power conversion efficiency (70% - 1480 nm pumped) and peak absorption (25 dB/m at 1530 nm) to minimize the fiber length and pump power requirements. CorActive has perfected a high doping concentration process so that fiber lengths are kept to a minimum to reduce unwanted non-linear effects. The Er-25-05-PM is based on standard 125um fiber geometry and can be used with available standard PM fibers and components. Non-polarization maintaining versions of the fiber are also available (Er-25-05 and HCO 4000).
Due to the uniform photosensitivity and high peak absorption of CorActive’s Er-25-05 fibers, a primary application is the Distributed Feedback (DFB) Laser where the fiber length is fixed and power output levels are governed by the absorption and efficiency of the fiber. Optimized Fiber Bragg Gratings, enabled by the uniform photosensitivity, ensure reduced noise in the laser output. The high peak absorption of the Er-25-05 fibers enables superior optical amplification in the C & L band windows. This results in reduced fiber lengths for C Band amplifiers and efficient amplification in the L Band.
CorActive’s Er-25-05 fibers are in full-scale production and are available immediately for sampling. Complete fiber characterization data is provided with all CorActive optical fiber products and our optical design engineers are available to assist in obtaining optimal simulation results.

New Addition to European Fleet and Zurich Base Voted Best FBO in Switzerland
ExecuJet is pleased to announce the addition of another Bombardier Global Express ultra-long range jet to its European fleet. ExecuJet’s Zürich base has been voted best Fixed Base Operator (FBO) in Switzerland by charter operators and brokers in the annual European Business Air News FBO survey.
Zürich, Switzerland (PRWEB) January 26, 2005 -- ExecuJet is pleased to announce the addition of another Bombardier Global Express ultra-long range jet to its European fleet. Although home-based in Zürich, Switzerland, the aircraft is operationally based in Kiev, Ukraine (UKBB) strategically positioned to capture increasing charter demand out of Eastern Europe for widebody ultra-long range business jets. This brings to six, the number of Global Express aircraft in ExecuJet’s world wide charter fleet.
“ExecuJet continues to target Eastern Europe to grow our charter and aviation services business,” comments Peter Smales, managing director of ExecuJet Europe. “We have been very vocal the past year about our European expansion plans, particularly with respect to Eastern Europe, so the addition of this Global Express and it’s positioning in Kiev is an important milestone, providing the perfect platform to satisfy regional demand for large cabin comfortable non-stop travel to the Far East and Americas.”
In related news, ExecuJet’s Zürich base has been voted best Fixed Base Operator (FBO) in Switzerland by charter operators and brokers in the annual European Business Air News FBO survey. Fixed Base Operations typically cover business aviation activities such as flight planning and ground handling services which include in-flight catering, refuelling, customs and immigration assistance and aircraft valet. ExecuJet’s catering facilities were also voted into the top position in Europe and the FBO ranked 6th overall out of a total of 177 FBO’s surveyed. The company also ranked highly in Passenger Facilities and Technical Capabilities sections.
ExecuJet is pleased once again to be an official ground handling service provider for The World Economic Forum which will be presenting its annual general meeting in Davos, Switzerland on 26 - 30 January 2005. This service will be in partnership with Swissport Executive Aviation.
A dedicated ExecuJet team will be ready at Zürich-Airport to provide delegates with a comprehensive suite of platinum concierge services. This includes an executive aircraft ground package that covers full airfield services and specially negotiated arrangements for onward travel to Davos by limousine or helicopter. Delegates will also be able to make use of a WEF help desk on arrival in Zürich.
The ExecuJet Aviation Group is headquartered in Zürich, Switzerland, and has operations in five regions: Australasia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Each region hosts several dedicated business divisions, each focused on specific skills and services within the aviation industry, including Pilatus PC-12 and Bombardier business jet aircraft sales, flight operations, including aircraft management and charter, aircraft maintenance and FBO facilities. ExecuJet currently operates more than 70 aircraft under partial or full management and offers 36 aircraft for charter, deployed in key European, Middle Eastern, Australian and South African bases and operating under one of ExecuJet's six regional civil aviation issued air operating certificates.
