India Places Missiles on the Quick Purchase Track

Indian defence ministry has accelerated process to purchase LLQRMs (Low Level Quick Reaction Missiles) from overseas markets after the flop show with the homegrown Trishul Low Level Quick Reaction Missiles. Firms from France, Israel, UK, Poland, Switzerland and Russia are in contention.

(PRWEB) February 2, 2005 -- With homegrown Trishul Low Level Quick Reaction Missiles (LLQRM) dumped to be a an experimental missile only, Indian defence ministry has accelerated process to purchase LLQRMs from overseas markets.

Currently tests are underway in France and Israel for the purchase of 75 LLQRM at a cost of around $300 million. The IAF had invited bids from reputed defense firms from France, Israel, South Africa, United Kingdom, Russia, Poland and Switzerland for trials of their LLQRM missiles.

Two separate teams of the Indian Air Force are in Israel. The missiles of Rafael are being tested in Israel while the missiles of MBDA of France are being tested at undisclosed locations in France.

The technical trials are expected to be over in February and the contract signed in financial year 2005-06 itself , say officials in the Indian defence ministry.

India is currently looking for LLQRM which are almost having the same parameters as the Trishul. The essential requirements of the LLQRM to be purchased include capability of full protection missile systems against low level threats, possession of passive electro-optical tracking systems to avoid detection, and ability to launch laser guided missiles.

The missiles are to be mounted on a mobile vehicle and will be used to engage targets like aircraft and helicopters flying at high speed with its radar command on line of sight guidance of the missile. The LLQRM should operate on the K band so that it is difficult to jam the missile system.
