Atair Aerospace Becomes the First Company in the World to Demonstrate Flocking and Swarming Capabilities on Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
For the first time in history, autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have flown using flocking and swarming algorithms. “Flocking and Swarming” are two words used interchangeably to refer to modeled flight that is biologically inspired by the flight of flocking birds and swarming insects.
BROOKLYN, NY (PRWEB) March 31, 2005 -- “For the first time in history, autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have flown using flocking and swarming algorithms,” reports Daniel Preston, chief executive and lead engineer for Atair Aerospace, Inc. (Atair AS).
“Flocking and Swarming” are two words used interchangeably to refer to modeled flight that is biologically inspired by the flight of flocking birds and swarming insects. The capability of biological systems to autonomously maneuver, track and pursue evasive targets in a cluttered environment is vastly superior to any engineered system.
Atair AS is pioneering the development and implementation of flocking and active collision avoidance algorithms on UAVs. Atair AS’ technology was first tested December 16–18 in Eloy, Ariz. where two fleets of five Onyx™ systems were airdropped and successfully flocked in tight formation to target. Onyx systems are autonomously guided parafoil systems (UAV gliders) designed to allow military cargo to be parachuted from high altitude and horizontal stand off and land accurately on target. Atair AS developed the Onyx system under contract with the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center - Natick. Onyx systems can be dropped at up to 35,000 ft altitude, autonomously glide for 30+ miles, and land on a preprogrammed target—accurate to about 150 feet.
The importance of flocking and active collision avoidance towards the application of precision resupply is critical. With this technology multiple systems (50+) can be deployed in the same airspace, guiding to one or multiple targets without possibility of mid air collisions.
Atair AS’ inventive technology has advanced the state of the art in guidance and control systems. This technology will open the door for advanced autonomous flight capabilities on a variety of UAV platforms from fixed wing to rotorcraft, with applications from sensor and munitions delivery to surveillance.
Atair Aerospace, Inc. is a Brooklyn-based defense company dedicated to modernizing military and industrial airdrop techniques through its range of innovative autonomously guided parachute systems and UAVs.

EHS Managers are Increasingly Appreciated by Their Organizations, Enviro.BLR.com Survey Finds
Environmental health and safety managers are perceived as doing a valuable job by their employers. The bad news is that only half of those taking part in BLR's survey report that they regularly communicate the business value of their environmental or safety activities.
Old Saybrook, CT (PRWEB) March 31, 2005 -- Environmental health and safety managers are perceived as doing a valuable job, with 75% of the 470 respondents in a Business and Legal Reports, Inc. online survey agreeing with the statement that their organizations see the value in their EHS activities. The trend is positive too, with 77% reporting that expectations for EHS have increased over the past 5 years. Full results of the survey conducted by Enviro.BLR.com – Making State Environmental Compliance Easier – may be downloaded at http://www.blr.com/80502500/PRS7
If increased EHS stature is the good news, however, the bad news is that only half of those taking part in the survey report that they regularly communicate the business value of their environmental or safety activities, or that they have a formal process for measuring EHS performance.
“The profession is growing in stature, and recognizes that it needs to manage toward business drivers,” said Clare Condon, managing editor of BLR’s environmental products. “The response to BLR’s survey shows that EHS professionals need to complete the cycle by finding out how to communicate the value of their environmental and safety activities to upper-level management,” Condon commented.
When asked to relay their biggest on-the-job headaches, 24% of the EHS managers surveyed listed paperwork and red tape, 14% referred to problems getting upper management buy-in, and 27% reported problems with employee training and compliance. Encouragingly enough, more managers say that their budgets are increasing (38%) than decreasing (20%).
To address these growing needs in an era of increased responsibilities, BLR’s Enviro.BLR.com provides regulatory activity tracking, plain-English analysis of EHS regulations, detailed training meetings, checklists and forms, and access to its team of expert attorneys and practitioners for 1-day compliance answers.

LatchTool PowerCylinder™ Named a Top 100 Product of the Year by Design News Magazine
The LatchTool PowerCylinder™, a mechanical force amplifier that turns pounds into tons, was selected by Design News Magazine as one of the best 100 products of the year in its March 7th issue.
Colorado Springs, CO (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) March 30, 2005 -- The LatchTool PowerCylinder™, a mechanical force amplifier that turns pounds into tons, was selected by Design News Magazine as one of the best 100 products of the year in its March 7th issue. Design News is a Reed Business Information publication serving design engineers. This group of engineers defines the $900 million plus U.S. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) market, a group that produces just about every new product that hits the market.
As an OEM component, engineers now have the ability with the PowerCylinder to add the features of hydraulic power to their product designs without the weight, size, complexity and cost of a hydraulic system.
LatchTool predicts their PowerCylinder will find use as a power boost for hand and power tools and the ability to add strength to prosthetic limbs and a variety of uses where conventional hydraulic power is just too heavy and expensive. The National Fluid Power Association has petitioned the National Science Foundation on behalf of its members to fund $18 million in research at select engineering colleges to develop compact and efficient fluid power technology.
LatchTool CEO Bob McPherson says "Clearly, the fluid power industry recognizes that its technology cannot satisfy the insatiable demand for smaller, simpler and less expensive components and products. There is a huge gap between the force and displacement fluid power can deliver and that delivered by electrically driven systems. But the electrical systems are catching up. The PowerCylinder spans this gap, effectively offering fluid power at the end of a wire. Here the company sees a plethora of applications such as automobile breaking, power steering, robotics, automation and aviation.
"A hundred years ago, the Wright Brothers took their first flight and look where we've ended up. The LatchTool PowerCylinder has just begun, but it won't take a hundred years to see how big an impact the PowerCylinder is about to make."

TAG UAV Helicopter Featured in CBS Network Hit Series "CSI New York"
In another first for UAV’s and for Tactical Aerospace Group (TAG), this week's episode of the hit CBS network series, CSI:NY featured a supporting cast member in the form of a TAG UAV helicopter. The one hour feature episode entitled "The Dove Commission" stars Gary Sinise and Melina Kanakaredes and was directed by Emilio Estevez. The show used a variation of a TAG "C" type UAV helicopter as a member of the elite NYPD TARU unit to perform on-camera maneuvers integral to the story line. The weaponized helicopter represented in the show was fitted out with dual .30 caliber guns, video and thermal vision as well as a laser target acquisition system. The UAV was shown flying through the New York skyline culminating in a firing sequence from the outside of a 65th floor of a high rise building.
Hollywood, CA (PRWEB) March 25, 2005 -- In another first for UAV’s and for Tactical Aerospace Group (TAG), this week's episode of the hit CBS network series, CSI:NY featured a supporting cast member in the form of a TAG UAV helicopter.
Use of the TAG UAV in media productions allows for the size, scale and payload capabilities to portray or represent any rotary aircraft with realistic flight characteristics and detailed visual representation.
Although fictionalized in this episode with the NYPD, it indicates the very near future as these and other major departments move to integrate the strategic advantages offered by TAG UAVs into their arsenal of tools to avert crime and assist in surveillance, patrols, incident response and homeland defense capabilities. The remote unmanned helicopter enhances law enforcement aerial capabilities by acting as a force multiplier for their existing airborne assets. This frees the department's existing helicopters, along with their pilots and flight crews, to concentrate on incidents where human intervention and intelligence is needed on site. The TAG helicopter is also a welcome and viable solution to provide aerial capabilities to departments that could not otherwise afford to acquire and maintain an aircraft contingent.
Sized to be transportable by SUV, trailer or van, the TAG UAV can be deployed in minutes to loiter over an incident or crime scene providing crucial video or thermal imaging intelligence. The helicopter can also act as either a communications repeater or a local WiFi hub to provide full multimedia coverage to all law enforcement personnel in the vicinity by providing a downlink to the local command center and to their vehicles or portable hand-held PDAs carried by each officer.
Tactical Aerospace Group (TAG) manufacturers autonomous and remotely piloted unmanned aerial helicopters and develops or integrates flight control systems, instrumentation and various payload technologies for military, civil, media, surveillance, scientific and research applications.

Air Tanker Market Assessment Outlines Targets For Commercial Opportunities
The world-wide tanker situation is in flux. Global air-to-air refueling efforts center largely on the actions and capabilities of the U. S. Air Force, Royal Air Force, and to a lesser extent, the Royal Australian Air Force, largely due to the cost of maintaining tanker fleets.
(PRWEB) March 22, 2005 -- A recent worldwide aerial tanker market assessment performed, by Corcoran Associates, confirms that as the U. S. military redefines its strategic goals, the concepts of expeditionary forces, force projection, and deployable assets will rise to the top of the priority list. These strategic changes will increase the demand for aerial tankers in any future crisis or military response.
The assessment also identified nations where a market clearly exists for alternative, less costly means of providing tanker assets, including leased commercial airframes. Many United States, United Kingdom, and world-wide tanker missions do not involve war zones and combat risk. These are samples of missions that may be better served, from an economic stand point, by commercial assets.
So, the question from industry: "Does this present a commercial opportunity?" states Jerry Corcoran, Managing Partner for Corcoran Associates.

Apollo Moonwalker Signed Panoramas
For the first time, a complete set of Apollo lunar surface panoramas has been produced, which are available signed by the Moonwalkers who took the photos whilst exploring the moon.
(PRWEB) March 18, 2005 -- The high quality panoramic prints, are available from each of the Apollo moon landing missions, and have been signed by a moonwalker from each landing crew.
Over 30 years ago men walked on the moon for the first time. During those 6 moon landing missions many 360 degree panoramas were taken by the Apollo astronauts consisting of several photos which were then glued together by NASA when they returned.
30 years on and using modern digital technology Mike Constantine of moonpans.com assembled these panoramas into their full glory.
The results are spectacular; each panorama has been carefully assembled from very high-res scans to produce beautiful seamless images and prints.
Many of the astronauts were so impressed with the quality of the prints, that they requested one for their own wall.
"The reaction of the Astronauts when they see the panoramas has been fantastic," says Mike Constantine. "They all said it brought back memories from their great adventure exploring the moon."
Alan Bean who was the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 12 and now paints scenes from the Apollo Moon landings commented that the panoramas were a great resource for his Art.
"Its things like that which makes it all worthwhile, I never thought when I made the pans that the guys who actually took the photos on the lunar surface would ever see them, let alone request to own one!"

What Differentiates Strategy X from the Competition?
The Strategy X, Inc. team consists of the original instructors and top team leaders and members from the effects based security assessment teams and installation, integration management and security system maintenance specialists used by the United States Air Force.
Over 100 years of Security Management and On-Site Field experience in Installations, Integration Management and Security System Maintenance. Strategy X, Inc. professionals, specialists and experts have conducted performance based security assessments, installations, integration management and maintenance on all of the Air Force's highest priority resources and security systems including the nation's highest priority weapons systems.
Over 40 years of experience in the Performance Based Security applications of Modeling and Simulation, Performance Criteria and System Reliability for government and civil applications. Security system designs in the past have been solely dependant on written standards and expert judgment. This however, leaves a very important question unanswered: Will this system protect the personnel or resources it is designed to protect? Strategy X, Inc. has the answer. The effectiveness of a security system can be identified, as well as the associated risk to personnel or resources requiring protection. If the security system is deemed ineffective, credible solutions can be identified, tested, and included in the final design.
Identifying Security System Effectiveness is accomplished by applying a 'reliability study'. This methodology is a very common process, and has been widely used to ensure systems are designed to perform in the most effective manner, while minimizing life-cycle cost. This methodology has been being applied to security system designs for over 30 years, but has never before been available to organizations outside of the Department of Energy and the United States Air Force.

Dr. Josh Hoyt, LatchTool’s SVP-Technology, says PowerCylinders are based on encapsulated hydraulic circuits made possible by ingeniously small check valves that permit large unrestricted fluid flows.” “We’ve got some pretty good ideas of where our technology can make a difference, but what we really want to know is where product developers and design engineers see an immediate fit.” He stresses a PowerCylinder™ “is a complete system; it requires neither hydraulic nor pneumatic service. Activate it manually or hook it up to a servo and you are set to go.”
“Who could have dreamt something as fundamental as the PowerCylinder™ would wait until the 21st century to be invented”, says LatchTool’s president, Bob McPherson. “What we are doing now is making up for lost time. Once, the early adopters realize the contributions the PowerCylinder™ can make to their field, the excitement begins.”
Contest details are available at latchtool.com along with technical descriptions, animations and a forum for communications with the company.
LatchTool Group designs and manufactures PowerCylinders™, mechanical force amplifiers with the speed and power of hydraulics. The Company also manages its portfolio of intellectual properties through active licensing.

EVWorld.Com Poll Foresees Future US-China Conflict Over Oil
Results of February 2005 on-line reader poll.
(PRWEB) March 9, 2005 -- China recently became the world's largest consumer nation in virtually every commodity category except one: oil. Here it is second only to the United States in its thirst for petroleum and it is that appetite that a five-to-one majority in a recent Internet poll believe will eventually bring it into conflict with the World's only super-power.
China's demand for oil has seen it scouring the planet from Russia, where it has sought a stake in Yukos-controlled oil fields, to Canadian tar sands, to Venezuelan crude, to reserves in Somalia, to cutting lucrative deals Iran, which has earmarked nearly 15 percent of its oil production for China. And it is gradually beefing up its naval and maritime presence along the vital oil tanker routes that thread strategic Far East choke points.
And while China is aggressively seeking to encourage greater use of renewable energy and conservation technologies, its booming economy continues to strain the world's ability to produce enough oil to meet global demand, driving up prices into the +$50 a barrel range; and potentially setting the stage for a future economic, diplomatic and/or possible military conflict.
So, during the month of February 2005, EV World, the Internet's leading web portal for news and information about sustainable transportation technologies, asked its readers, "Do you believe that China's growing appetite for oil will eventually bring it into conflict with the United States?"
A total of 670 readers took part in the poll. Of those 77 percent (517) responded "Yes"; 15 percent (100) responded "No"; and 8 percent (53) replied "Unsure". That's a five-to-one margin of those who see potential conflict between two of the world's largest consuming nations.
"This is obviously a troubling finding," stated EV World publisher Bill Moore. "It clearly suggests a pervasive pessimism about how successful either nation will be in reducing its dependence on imported oil. These findings, while not scientific, should be a wake-up call to the leaders of both nations that we must find a way to work peacefully and constructively towards sustainable energy solutions that don't pit nation-against-nation in the competition for resources."
About EV World
Published weekly on-line since 1998, EV World features original content on a wide range of topics related to advanced, alternative fuel technologies from the latest in battery, hybrid-electric and fuel cell vehicles to renewable energy progress and policy. The publication has interviewed such notables as General Wesley Clark, former CIA director James Woolsey and "The Hype About Hydrogen" author Joseph Romm. Interviews are available in text and MP3 audio format. EV refers to "electric vehicle."
While premium content is available to subscribers only, much of the site, including daily news updates and archived interviews and feature stories, are available free to all readers. EV World conducts reader polls each month, with this month's question being, "Since hybrids use less gasoline, should states switch from taxing motor fuel sales to taxing vehicle owners on the miles they drive each year?"

Protonex and Millennium Cell Deliver ‘Industry First’ to U.S. Air Force
Southborough, MA and Eatontown, NJ--March 9, 2005-- Protonex Technology Corporation, a manufacturer of high performance fuel cell power sources for portable and remote applications, and Millennium Cell Inc. (NASDAQ: MCEL), a leading developer of hydrogen energy systems, announced that they have delivered to the U.S. Air Force the industry’s first fully-integrated 30 Watt portable fuel cell power system fueled by chemical hydride cartridges.
Southborough, MA and Eatontown, NJ (PRWEB) March 9, 2005 -- Protonex Technology Corporation, a manufacturer of high performance fuel cell power sources for portable and remote applications, and Millennium Cell Inc. (NASDAQ: MCEL), a leading developer of hydrogen energy systems, announced that they have delivered to the U.S. Air Force the industry’s first fully-integrated 30 Watt portable fuel cell power system fueled by chemical hydride cartridges.
This portable power system, (referred to as P1), is the first deliverable under a previously announced U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, Dual Use Science and Technology (DUST) contract awarded to Protonex. The system integrates Millennium Cell’s hydrogen energy system into Protonex’s PEM fuel cell platform to provide a fuel cell power source for soldiers on extended field missions.
"The delivery of P1 midway through the DUST program represents a significant milestone in the development of soldier power systems,” said Thom Reitz, Research Leader, Fuel Cells for the Air Force Research Lab. “The Air Force is very interested in evaluating this system as a means for significantly reducing the overall power system weight burden carried by the war fighter. We are looking forward to testing P1 and providing feedback to advance the technology to the next readiness level for the final deliverable due later in 2005.”
The P1 unit represents a substantial improvement in energy density and cost over the batteries currently used by the U.S. Military. Today, to fulfill the requirement for 30 Watts of continuous power for a 72-hour mission, soldiers carry 13 primary batteries weighing over 29 pounds. The P1 system is capable of meeting these power requirements at less than 50% of the weight (including fuel cell platform and snap-in fuel cartridges).
“Protonex and Millennium Cell are delighted to deliver a superior power solution to the U.S. Air Force that provides both performance and cost advantages over incumbent battery technology,” said Scott Pearson, CEO, Protonex. “The P1 units clearly demonstrate the value and utility of our fuel cell systems for portable military applications and keep us on the path for potential deployment.”
”This is an important milestone for both companies,” commented Adam Briggs, Senior Vice President, Millennium Cell. “Later in 2005, we expect to deliver a next generation system to the Air Force that will further reduce the weight of the power system with its cartridges to less than 10 pounds. The benefits of this power solution will also be attractive in many other military and commercial markets that need reliable, long lasting sources of energy.”

Electronic Sensor Technology Creates Remote Handheld Vapor Sampler for zNose -TM
New Device Will Have Capability to Sample Chemical Vapors at Remote Locations Changing the Way Security Operations Are Managed
NEWBURY PARK, CA (PRWEB) March 9, 2005 -- Electronic Sensor Technology, Inc. (OTCBB: ESNR) announced today that it has developed a remote vapor sampling interface for its popular portable handheld zNose(TM) analyzer. The existing zNose(TM) Model 4200 is a portable gas chromatograph that can capture and analyze any odor, fragrance, or chemical vapor within ten seconds. Capitalizing on the new interface, the Company has also developed a miniaturized handheld remote vapor sampler as an accessory product to the zNose(TM). The remote sampler is truly handheld, weights less than 2 pounds, and uses 2 D-cell batteries to power a small air pump to sample ambient air at 750 liters per minute. Volatile organic compounds within ambient air are collected in small removable cartridges and by inserting the cartridges into the zNose(TM) interface vapor, samples captured at remote locations can be quickly analyzed onsite.
Electronic Sensor Technology plans to begin manufacturing the remote samplers for a broad array of applications including chemical profiling of cargo containers and for monitoring of border locations, airports, subways, and other public facilities for homeland security.
"Security solutions today require the flexibility to function under any environment," said Edward J. Staples, Electronic Sensor Technology's Chief Executive Officer. "By developing miniaturized vapor samplers which interface with the zNose(TM), we are able to provide detection and analysis of chemical vapors in areas where discretion may be warranted or a venue's size may not support one of our larger devices. We believe this smaller unit will expand the market for zNose(TM) even further."
Founded in 1995, Electronic Sensor Technology has developed and patented a breakthrough chemical vapor analysis process. The company's product line is positioned to eliminate key vulnerabilities in the homeland security market, specifically in commercial building HVAC security, maritime port security, airport security, and border security. Many of the Homeland Security initiatives have greatly increased the need to develop fast and accurate methods of detecting and identifying a broad range of terrorist threats. These markets are predicted to grow at rapid rates as a result of increasing government and private sector concern with present security levels.

Office Affairs Can be Detrimental to Your Career
“Proceed with caution if you’re tempted to have an office affair” says infidelity expert Ruth Houston, who was recently quoted in a Christian Science Monitor article on office affairs and workplace romance.
(PRWEB) March 8, 2005 -- “Proceed with caution if you’re contemplating having an office affair or workplace romance” says infidelity expert Ruth Houston, who was recently quoted in a Christian Science Monitor article on office romance.
Experts say that over 70% of single employees will become romantically involved with someone on the job at some point in their career. Research shows that people are more likely to date a coworker than anyone else. Today’s workplace has becomes the new “singles bar.” The workplace has also become the #1 place for married men and women to meet affair partners and conduct extramarital affairs.
“As tempting as it may be to date someone from work, the risks far outweigh the rewards” says Ruth Houston, infidelity expert and author of Is He Cheating on You?” Houston was recently quoted in an article in the business section of the Christian Science Monitor entitled To Date, or Not to Date by Randy Dotinga. Further expanding on her comments in that article, Houston discusses some of the negative aspects of office affairs.
Legal Complications
An office affair can cause you legal problems as well as public embarrassment” points out Houston. Especially if your .workplace lover becomes involved in a corporate scandal. “You could be named as an accomplice, or hauled into court as a government witness,” says Houston, citing the examples below:
• U.S. District Judge Barbara Jones, the judge in the trial of ex-WorldCom chief executive Bernard J. Ebbers, ruled that star witness Scott Sullivan can be questioned about his marital infidelity because it speaks to his character for truthfulness.
• Book publisher Judith Regan may be forced to testify about her affair with Bernard Kerik who withdrew his name from Homeland Security nominee in the midst of numerous allegations of personal and professional improprieties.
• Testimony from three former mistresses helped put Nathan Chapman away for 7 ½ years for defrauding Maryland's state pension fund system and looting his three publicly traded companies.
These are only three of the most recent examples of how an romance may become public knowledge, much to the embarrassment of those involved.
In addition, males in supervisory positions who have office affairs with female subordinate run the risk of becoming the subject of a sexual-harassment suit if the woman later claims to have been coerced or pressured into the relationship for fear of her job. For that reason many companies now forbid romance between bosses and subordinates. Others companies require persons involved to sign consensual relationship agreements – also known as “love contracts” - which state that the relationship is voluntary.
Career Complications
”Aside from legal issues, workers tempted to date their bosses should worry about whether a relationship will hurt their careers”, said Houston in the Christian Science Monitor article.
"If it ends badly and you were involved with someone in your direct chain of command, very nasty things can happen," Houston says, especially if your boss is married. "No matter how hard you work, some of your co-workers will always be convinced you got your raise or your promotion as a reward for sexual favors, rather than that you worked hard and earned it."
Below, Houston further expands on some of the day-to-day and long-range career complications that can result from office affairs:
• Envious co-workers may become jealous and attempt to sabotage your work.
• Your productivity or the productivity of those around you may suffer.
• You could become the subject of office gossip
• If your office romance results in preferential treatment with regard to work assignments, raises, promotions or company perks your co-workers will resentment you.
• A series of office romances will earn you a reputation as someone who tries to sleep their way to the top.
• You may be transferred to another department or even required to leave the company, especially if you are a woman. When an office affair becomes a problem, it’s usually the woman who is penalized.
• It could create an awkward situation when the romance ends, and the two of you still have to work together.
• If you end the relationship and the other person is vindictive, they can sabotage your career in ways you can’t even begin to imagine.
• A disgruntled lover can negatively influence the kind of work assignments, raises, and opportunities for advancement you receive.
• Your coworkers’ perceptions of your work performance may be lowered.
• No matter how good you are, there will always be speculation as to the “real” reason for your job advancement.
How to Keep Your Office Romance on a Professional Level
“The best advice I can give regarding office affairs is to avoid them altogether, since the risks greatly outweigh the rewards,” says Ruth Houston. “If you’re currently involved in a office romance, or you’re tempted to become involved in one despite my warnings, the guidelines below will help you keep things on a professional level.”
• Know your company’s policy regarding office romance.
• Never get involved with someone in your direct chain of command.
• Confine your romantic attachments to someone who is a peer, rather than someone above or below you in rank.
• Never get involved with in an office affair if either of you are married.
• Never underestimate the power of the office grapevine. Try to keep your office romance a secret, if you can.
• Keep it low key – don’t flaunt the fact that the two of you are romantically involved.
• Avoid public displays of affection – it’s highly unprofessional.
• Don’t gossip about your love life.
• Do not exchange embarrassing or ostentatious flowers, cards or gifts. (Small , discreet, tasteful gifts are okay.)
• Do not allow your office romance to interfere with productivity – yours, your partner’s or your coworkers.
• Do not use company e-mail to send passionate or suggestive love notes to each other.
• Do not leave X-rated voice mails on each other’s phones.
• Don’t show or request favoritism regarding work assignments, raises, promotions or company perks.
• Do not use company funds to entertain your partner.
• Refrain from overt sexual behavior on the job.
• Never engage in sex on company property. (That includes stair wells, supply closets and company parking lots.)
• Have a back-up career plan in case things take a negative turn. Be prepared to find another job.

New Solar-Powered Vehicle Barriers Provide Anti-terrorist Protection for Remote U.S. Government Dam
Intelligent Perimeter Systems’ retractable barriers go from invisible to fully upright in seconds and stop vehicles up to 30,000 pounds traveling at 50 miles per hour. The new technology allows high-security vehicle barriers to be installed to protect unmanned facilties and remote locations lacking electrical power.
Dublin, OH (PRWEB) March 7, 2005 -- Intelligent Perimeter Systems (IPS), a manufacturer of advanced counter-terrorist vehicle barrier and traffic control systems, today announced it has completed installation of an innovative perimeter security system at an undisclosed U.S. Bureau of Reclamation dam in the western U.S.
The Bureau of Reclamation awarded the security contract to IPS in July 2004. “The mission was to provide counter-terrorist protection in a remote location lacking access to electrical power,” said IPS CEO Ronald E. Scherer. “Our solar-powered Model 400 barriers, combined with a custom monitoring system that permits authorized personnel to monitor the status of the barriers in real-time, created an ideal perimeter security system for this unmanned location.”
Designed to stop a 30,000-pound vehicle traveling at 50 mph, the retractable steel posts (also called bollards) are installed underground in sets of three or four, with the top of each post flush with the roadway. At the push of a button, the swipe of an access card, or a signal from a radio controller or satellite, the 1,400-pound bollards spring upright, reaching their full height of 36 inches in 6 seconds or less. Each bollard has self-contained hydraulic pumps and integrated battery backup, increasing its tamper resistance. A fully redundant design with no single point of failure ensures that the system works even if one barrier fails.
“The ability to operate from solar power represents a distinct advance in vehicle barrier technology,” Scherer said. “From desert locations to mountainous areas, we are taking orders for anti-terrorist vehicle barriers in places that couldn’t be adequately protected prior to the introduction of our products.”
IPS has had a number of other major installations and orders over the past 6 months, allowing the company to expand its manufacturing facilities in Battle Creek, Michigan. IPS systems currently protect major utility, government and corporate facilities around the U.S.
About Intelligent Perimeter Systems

A total of $40.7 billion will be available to the department in 2005.
Project BioShield will provide an additional $2.5 billion in 2005 for medical countermeasures against weapons of mass destruction, and improved bio-surveillance for biological agents in high-threat cities and high-value targets, such as stadiums and transit systems. With overall spending up, many public stocks in the homeland security industry are thriving.
Billions more dollars are being invested to protect the world's homes, food supply, mail service, airlines, data, and people. Some researchers anticipate that the homeland security industry will grow to more than $170 billion in 2006.

Major Aerospace Company Selects Datamatics’ TC-1™ System for Workforce Management Needs
Vought Aircraft Industries, a manufacturer of critical components for commercial and military aircraft, has selected Datamatics' TC-1™ for capturing and processing workforce related data.
Fords, NJ (PRWEB) March 4, 2005 -- Vought Aircraft Industries, a manufacturer of critical components for commercial and military aircraft, has selected Datamatics’ TC-1™ Labor Management System for a full rollout to all of its locations. Over the next several months, the TC-1™ system will be implemented at Vought facilities in Georgia, Florida, Texas, and California.
TC-1™ is a state of the art solution for capturing and processing workforce related data. It offers automated end-to-end management of employee time, integrating a wide range of data collection devices and applying even the most extensive work rules and benefit policies to generate detailed management reports and process data for export to payroll, HR, and other internal systems.
Vought was originally introduced to TC-1™ as the result of an acquisition. Back in 2003, Vought acquired Aerostructures, a Nashville company, which had already implemented TC-1™. Aerostructures selected TC-1™ to replace another product that required heavy customization to meet the company’s operational needs.
As J. Jack Schultz, a financial analyst for Aerostructures and now Vought explains, “We were looking for a more cost effective system and were amazed to discover that most of the customizations we had been paying for are available right off the shelf in the TC-1™ product.” Aerostructures evaluated five different systems and ultimately decided on TC-1™ .The comparative advantages of TC-1™, with its wide range of configuration options, soon became apparent to the company’s new owner.
Vought is a major aviation contractor, best known for supplying component parts for Boeing, Airbus, and Gulfstream passenger jets, as well as the C130 military transport plane and a group of fighter planes, including the F-14 Tomcat, the F-15 Eagle, and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. It has a total workforce of more than 6,000 employees, a size that presents significant challenges in tracking and controlling labor costs.
In Schultz’s view, two ingredients account for the strong appeal of TC-1™ system at Vought. “To begin with, the system is user-friendly. TC-1 has great help features and is easy to use. You can look at a week at a time, and the time punches and absences are all shown on one screen. Moreover, users can customize the look and feel of the screens they access the most. Some of our staff have redesigned the office view with the colors of their favorite football teams.”
The other advantage of TC-1™ Schultz cites is the high level of service and support provided by the software’s developer, Datamatics. “Any time we have a question or need help with something, we always get a prompt response. The service is always very good. When we call about a problem, within minutes someone is on the line with us, working to resolve it.”
Compliments like that are music to the ears of Norman C. Heinle, the president of Datamatics Management Services, Inc., the company that develops, installs, and supports TC-1™. “Providing the highest quality services to our clients is our top priority,” he explained. “We want to help our clients reach higher levels of success through automated labor management.”
Datamatics Management Services, Inc. is a New Jersey-based software development and management consulting company. Datamatics' TC-1™ Labor Management System is a leading software package used in thousands of businesses, including QVC, Jet Blue, and Armed Forces Savings Bank. TC-1™ automates employee scheduling, attendance record keeping, benefit accrual tracking, and cost allocation. Datamatics also offers an ASP service, TimesheetPlus™, to businesses looking for an outsourced solution to workforce management.

Rockets Away - Barnstorms Cyberspace
Announces new eZine, Rockets Away!, which provides articles and information on emerging private spacecraft industry. Current issue features interview with SpaceDev President, Richard Slansky. - a free eZine devoted to commercial spaceflight
(PRWEB) March 4, 2005 -- With the launching of SpaceShipOne, the world’s attention was focused on a new breed of space adventurer who, like the early aviators, barnstormed our skies. Only this time, the sky was a bit higher, at least 62 miles up, and now the attention of the world was focused on the first civilian astronauts like Brian Binnie and Mike Melville and how they were “barnstorming space.”
As SpaceShipOne crashed through the 62 mile barrier for the second time in two weeks, winning the Ansari Prize, it became obvious to a small group of entrepreneurs that commercial spaceflight was a whole new episode in human history, one that was being undertaken by companies throughout the world eager for the spoils of this new adventure. Their saga will be written in Rockets Away! - a free eZine devoted to commercial spaceflight that was launched this year by Johnny Blue Star, Dave Gieber and Bill Krohn. The first three issues can be accessed at http://www.unknowninfo.com/backissues.html.
Rockets Away! was founded by Johnny Blue Star, a screenwriter with an advertising and public relations background, and Dave Gieber, a rocket scientist and engineer with a long tenure in the development of insulation for spacecraft. Bill Krohn is current Editor-in-Chief. Bill is an author and film critic for the Cahiers de Cinema and Economist. The following is from a private colloquium designed to acquaint potential viewers with the goals of the new eZine.
Why did you found Rockets Away!?
Johnny Blue - Star We wanted to create a vehicle so that people could follow the private spacecraft industry as it developed. The Internet was a great way to do it. And what could be easier or cheaper than subscribing to a free eZine like Rockets Away! All they have to do is click on http://www.rocketsaway.net and sign up.
What kind of content do you feature?
Bill Krohn - Our efforts are completely focused on private spacecraft industry. The current issue features an interview with Richard Slansky, the President of SpaceDev, the company that developed the hybrid rocket propulsion system used in the first three launches of SpaceShipOne. It also discusses the infrastructure of the first private manned spacecraft program. Past issues dealt with SpaceshipOne’s prize-winning flight leading to the $10,000,000 Ansari X-Prize, and the GoldenPalace.Com efforts to jumpstart their own space program by using a balloon to launch the spacecraft while it was airborne.
You all are pursuing different careers. Why was this so important to you?
Dave Gieber - I think it goes back to childhood. We all watched those great TV programs like Tom Corbett, Rod Brown and the Rocket Rangers, Rocky Jones -Space Ranger and TV adaptations of Buster Crabbe’s Flash Gordon; saw films like Destination Moon and Rocket Ship X-M, read Heinlein and Asimov. All of us wanted to go at least to the moon. In my case, I actually went into the space industry, working for Thiokol (now ATK) and Aerojet. I spent fourteen years as a design engineer in the solid propulsion rocket motor industry, specializing in rocket motor insulation. I worked on a lot of rockets.
What impelled you initially to develop this idea?
Johnny Blue Star - During most of the space program, I was more or less asleep - from Sputnik to the Space Shuttles and Space Stations. Even the moon landing didn’t phase me. It seemed interesting, but not involving to me. When SpaceShipOne launched I knew that somehow my life had changed. Suddenly it was as if you were watching a film like Destination Moon, which was based on Heinlein’s writings, just as the TV show Tom Corbett and the Space Cadets was. The launching of SpaceShipOne showed how private individuals, if given the chance, could make something of space. Space was no longer the province of the government or the military.
Bill Krohn Right. The people of Planet Earth were taking space into their own hands. When I heard of this project, I also wanted to become involved again. I wanted people to experience the same thrill I did about space when I was a boy. I wanted people to be able to participate in the adventure as it happened. Johnny had asked Dave to become part of the project first since he was a rocket scientist and a friend, and they got it off the ground. Then they asked me, partially because of my strong editorial background, but also because of my science fiction and UFO interests - I’m now working on a documentary about Roswell built around a very rare interview from an alleged participant in the event.
You also wanted to promote the private infrastructure?
Dave Gieber - Yes, along with the adventure comes the fact spaceflight requires funding, often through private investors. We wanted the public to know about these opportunities - that they could help contribute to this growing industry. SpaceDev (http://www.spacedev.com), which we feature in our current issue, was developed consciously by Jim Benson in a manner that would allow private investors to share the adventure of space.
Johnny Blue Star We want to give our readers an opportunity to share in that adventure too. All they have to do is click on http://www.rocketsaway.net and we’ll beam them up!

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Thermal Control
RFT Systems (Aerospace) Limited (RFT) are pleased to announce that they have completed their privately funded study into thermal control systems for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s)
(PRWEB) March 3, 2005 -- RFT Systems (Aerospace) Limited (RFT) are pleased to announce that they have completed their privately funded study into thermal control systems for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s).
The results of the 11 month long study have provided RFT with unrivalled insight into the thermal conditioning requirements, and technologies available, for this type of vehicle.
Utilising industry standard thermal modelling techniques, RFT have created a simulation system that can replicate a UAV, taking into account the vehicle structure, internal payload and external thermal loads.
Tom Benzie, Engineering Director, said “We have created a series of dynamic thermal models that can predict the thermal loading on a UAV throughout all phases of flight, in any of the worlds climatic regions. If we have the system configuration and the flight profile to be flown we can accurately predict temperatures within the UAV at any point on that profile. By knowing the required operating temperatures for the payload we can then implement thermal control philosophies which will provide optimum performance whilst reducing cost and overall system weight”.
RFT Systems (Aerospace) Limited is an Engineering Consultancy specialising in creating engineering solutions for the conditioning of both airframes and avionics.
