NovAtel Inc. Demonstrates First North American Dual Mode GPS & Galileo Receiver to CSA

NovAtel Inc. (NASDAQ: NGPS), a precise positioning technology company, announced today that it has successfully demonstrated the performance of a dual mode GPS and Galileo L1/E5A dual frequency prototype receiver to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), developed under a contract awarded in September 2004.

Calgary, Alberta (PRWEB) May 31, 2005 -- NovAtel Inc. These receivers will be ready to accept signals from the first Galileo satellites scheduled to launch later this year or in early 2006. Galileo is Europe’s state-of-the-art satellite navigation system, which is expected to be operational by 2010/12 with up to 30 satellites orbiting the earth.

NovAtel is developing two sets of L1/E5A engineering receivers and L1/E5A transmitters for the CSA for use with Galileo satellites. The receiver is being integrated into a modified version of NovAtel’s WAAS-GII system, which also includes the Euro-3M L1/L2 dual frequency GPS receiver. The signal generator is based on a previous design built for the new U.S. Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) uplink system.

“This is the first operational, near-production standard, dual mode GPS and Galileo dual frequency receiver in North America,” said Tony Murfin, VP Business Development at NovAtel. “We are particularly pleased to have the receiver working this early in the CSA program. We believe the technology we are creating here is unique, and will enable NovAtel to provide GPS/Galileo receiver solutions worldwide and, hopefully, in the ground infrastructure of the Galileo system itself.”

Currently, NovAtel supplies GPS navigational receivers to a number of national satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS) around the world, including the U.S. WAAS, European EGNOS, Japanese MSAS, Chinese SNAS, and, more recently, the Gagan system in India. These complex receivers incorporate NovAtel’s Narrow Correlator® tracking technology, MEDLL multipath reduction technology and Signal Quality Monitoring, and receive and process both WAAS L1/L5 GEO and GPS L1/L2/L5 signals.

Small Planes More at Risk to Crash?

Conventional thinking that small RPT aircraft are more at risk from loading errors is challenged by private researcher and inventor, Captain Geoff Ogilvie. Not enough research or study has been done by government and I believe the risk to large aircraft from loading errors is greater than realized by many in the industry. There is a solution however within reach. It is a patent pending system called Avibridge.

(PRWEB) May 30, 2005 -- Conventional aviation thinking that small regular public transport (RPT) aircraft are more at risk to loading errors than their larger RPT cousins is challenged by independent researcher and Avibridge ™ inventor, Geoff Ogilvie.

Geoff is concerned that the sole evidence available to investigators, in many large jet aircraft accidents, is the 85 year old paper based weight & balance system, known as the load data sheet.

“This (Lack of alternative evidence) gives rise to what I call the Ice Berg Effect.” Said the retired airline captain.

Smaller aircraft that crash after take off can generally be easily reconstructed and their weight & balance determined independently from the load sheet data.

This was the case in small RPT aircraft Cessna Caravan 208B that killed ten people, nine Canadians and one American, late Saturday, January 17, last year when the small plane crashed into Lake Erie after having taken off from Pelee Island, Ontario, Canada.

This crash that is still under investigation by TSB Canada has caused the release of the following interim information:

The maximum take-off weight in the Cessna aircraft manual is 8750 pounds (cargo pod installed) or 8550 pounds if flying into known icing conditions. The investigation determined that the actual weight of the occurrence aircraft on departure from Pelee Island was approximately 9820 pounds, 1270 pounds over gross weight.
However large aircraft due to;
- higher impact speed;
- larger fuel load;
- more destructive post crash fire are;
-often lost over deep water or,
- inaccessible mountainous terrain,

are more difficult to reconstruct post crash. Often there is little or no aircraft structure, baggage, cargo, fuel or human tissue left to be weighed and relocated on the recovered aircraft.

His concern is shared by many in the accident investigation business, including Acting Chairman Mark Rosenker US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

“The conventional industry logic considers the simplistic ratio of loading error to aircraft weight rather than a more in depth analysis of the many systemic and analytical risks to safety from loading errors.” Stated Captain Ogilvie. I have developed a useful tool called the WBS Threat & Error Model that can be used to determine true aircraft risk of accident from loading error.

The simplistic ratio logic used by many in the industry states that:
A comparison of various aircraft types indicates that the ratio of passenger weight to overall aircraft weight is inversely proportional to the size of the aircraft. For example, in a Boeing 747, the passenger weight represents approximately 9 per cent of the aircraft's weight (450 passengers at 188 pounds, aircraft of 875 000 pounds) whereas the passenger weight in a Caravan can represent approximately 22 per cent (10 passengers at 188 pounds, aircraft of 8550 pounds).

“Nobody knows for sure the true weight or balance of commercial aircraft. They are never weighed or balanced by external means except during a hangar check every few years, and then the aircraft is weighed empty.” Continued Geoff.

The aviation industry has relied on an 85 year old paper based system of computation to determine aircraft weight & balance prior to take off. The system is colloquially known as the load sheet.

A recent fatal accident involving MK Airlines B747 Cargo aircraft that crashed after take off on Runway 34 at Halifax International, Nova Scotia, Canada on October 14, 2004 is a case in point. The accident, which is still under investigation by TSB Canada is being closely followed by many in the industry to determine what part, loading error played in causing this crash.

If, as is suspected by many, the load sheet is the only evidence available to accident investigators then another case can be filed under the surface of the Ice Berg Effect. A valuable chance to gain more accurate weight & balance data on large RPT aircraft accidents will be lost to researchers like Captain Ogilvie.

“If there had been an External Weight & Balance System (EWBS) like Avibridge ™ in use at Halifax then the true threat to aircraft safety due loading error could have been measured, said Avibridge inventor Geoff Ogilvie.

“When are regulators going to face up to their responsibilities and fund research and development to produce a system that is independent, accurate, and verifiable and provides a final check and warning to the pilot of overweight or out of balance condition prior to take off.” Concluded Geoff Ogilvie.

Dallas Incubator Sees a Trend or Two

Incucomm says an exit from its facility is part of the new realties in startups. Xterprise, a provider of RFID solutions and systems, is moving out of Incucomm, a business incubator in June.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) May 29, 2005 -- “Xterprise was founded by Dean Frew in 2002, after 9/11 during the tech bubble bursting. It was a venture capital ice age,” said Steve Roemerman, Incucomm’s CEO. “No institutional money was seeding new companies when Dean started, so it’s impressive to see the firm now. When Dean moved in, Xterprise did not have a name, and he was the only person involved. Now they have dozens of people, have raised two rounds of financing from an excellent VC (Logispring), and have installed their solutions in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. They have an impressive line with hardware, software, and services. They have important patents pending and other interesting intellectual property. Xterprise shows that high quality companies can be started from scratch, in tough times.”

Roemerman said Xterprise reflected trends Incucomm has observed:
- Early stage firms must bootstrap, find angel funding or both until they meet the more conservative standards of current institutional investors
- This reality favors companies with pragmatic offerings, and founders with strong domain knowledge
- Venture economics in the US are cyclical in terms of investment activity, and in terms of the phases of firms targeted for investments
- The small number of startups with vintage years of 2001 - 04 is creating a supply and demand imbalance, pushing valuations up

“We are excited for Xterprise, and proud to be associated with them,” said Matt Bowers, Incucomm’s Chief Development Officer. Bowers noted Xterprise has sold into some of the largest companies in the world, in many cases winning in head to head competition with larger, more established firms. “People do business with people,” Bowers noted, “Dean Frew’s knowledge of the logistics space, and his strong personal reputation made an incredible difference while Xterprise was building its brand. Now they are partnered with other RFID leaders, like Alien, Apriso, Red Prairie, Symbol, and Zebra. They have clients in a number of verticals, including consumer package goods, technology, and medical. It is striking to see what they have accomplished.”

Xterprise will move to new facilities in Carrollton and will boast one of the most comprehensive RFID application and demonstration facilities in the world.

The Sandel TAWS solution offered by Business Jet Services is a single, copilot side-installed unit with an external annunciator with switches on the pilot side of the cockpit.

Gulfstream II and Gulfstream IIb operators/owners can contact Kevin Jordan at (214) 654-1511 for more information about Business Jet Services’ TAWS solution.

The company also announced that its Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) compliance solution for Gulfstream II and Gulfstream IIb aircraft is expected to receive STC approval in July 2005. Southwest Airlines Applauds House Bill to Repeal Wright Amendment

Dallas, TX (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) May 26, 2005 -- Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) today applauds two Texas Republican congressmen who have introduced a bill to immediately repeal the Wright Amendment. U.S. Reps. Jeb Hensarling and Sam Johnson call their bill "The Right to Fly Act," which is the first to be introduced since the need for the Wright Amendment was last called into question in November 2004.

Southwest Airlines applauds the tremendous leadership and vision of these two Texas congressmen who have tapped into the true will of the people. This is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of opening the skies for greater access to low fares through unfettered airline competition. In addition, these two Texas congressman recognize the importance of cracking the 26-year deadbolt that has artificially suppressed access to the Dallas/Ft. Worth market because of high air fares.

While this is a major step forward, it is just the beginning, and our People will remain steadfast in their efforts to educate the public on the importance of stimulating the economy through greater access to low fare air travel. We are gratified by this mobilizing effort in the House and look forward to a similar effort in the Senate.

Southwest Airlines Chairman Offers Remarks on Bill to Repeal Wright Amendment

Today, Southwest Airlines Chairman Herb Kelleher commented on legislation introduced by two Texas congressmen to repeal the Wright Amendment that unfairly restricts flights at Dallas Love Field.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) May 26, 2005 -- Today, Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) Chairman Herb Kelleher commented on legislation introduced by two Texas congressmen to repeal the Wright Amendment that unfairly restricts flights at Dallas Love Field. The following are excerpts from a press briefing:

"Southwest Airlines has been a bonanza in markets where we are allowed to offer unbridled, unconstrained, unshackled, low-fare service; not only by increasing traffic, but by creating a boon to local economic development," said Herb Kelleher, Southwest Airlines Executive Chairman. "Any time competition is fettered, it is a penalty to consumers.

"The size of Southwest Airlines' task force may pale in comparison to our competitors," Kelleher continued. "All we have is truth, right and justice on our side -- which makes us very successful. Those who are working to abolish the amendment are standing for the American people, for consumerism, and for free enterprise.

"There are crazy, weird, bizarre restrictions about what passengers can and can't do at Love Field; getting rid of the restrictions would be a considerable boon to the United States and our Customers. We are asking Congress to eliminate limitations that should have never been imposed in the first place; we are asking for the freedom to compete," Kelleher concluded.

"The Right to Fly Act" is the first legislation to be introduced since the need for the Wright Amendment was last called into question in November 2004. The 26-year-old congressional amendment limits nonstop flights from Dallas' Love Field airport to Texas and its four touching states (three additional states were added in 1997). Designed to protect a then-fledgling DFW International Airport, the Wright Amendment now prevents meaningful low fare airline competition to and from the Dallas/Ft. Worth travel market and serves to keep airfares high.

StarVision Technologies Secures Exclusive License to Star Identification Software

StarVision signs exclusive licensing agreement with Texas A&M University for star identification software.

College Station, TX (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) May 26, 2005 -- StarVision Technologies has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with Texas A&M University for star identification software that enables satellites to autonomously determine their orientation with only the stars as their guide. The same software will allow those of us on earth to identify stars in the night sky with the simple click of a high tech pointing device; no star maps or telescopes required.

"This is a huge step for StarVision," explains StarVision Technologies President Michael Jacox. "Even as we worked to secure the license from A&M, StarVision was investing in development of autonomous navigation and star identification products. It feels great knowing that we've secured the exclusive rights to put this software to work and we intend to do so right away."

Already, StarVision has two products developed that employ the algorithms and ingenuity of the three pieces of star identification software. StarVision's advanced Star Tracker concepts will support more responsive deployment of spacecraft, and allow for more autonomous on-board calibration and adjustment to the space environment.

Dr. John Junkins, Distinguished Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M University and a member of the National Academy of Engineering, led the development the concepts behind the star identification software.

"This software is the result of collaboration between me and my colleague, Dr. Daniele Mortari. Dr. Mortari's contributions were instrumental. Along with our students, we have developed and tested a suite of software that rapidly identifies stars in the 'lost in space mode,' without any prior navigation information," Junkins explains. "The software operates on images from a star camera and within a fraction of a second identifies star patterns reliably, and automatically re-calibrates the camera if any changes occur due to long term exposure in the harsh space environment. This algorithm represents a significant breakthrough, because sorting through the tens of millions of possibilities makes brute force methods unattractive."

The same suite of software can be used for commercial applications on Earth to accurately identify stars even within our atmosphere. StarTagger, StarVision's handheld star identifier, let's anyone who can point at a star in the night sky identify constellations and find out just what star they're looking at. This invention makes it possible for anyone to immediately become a proficient amateur astronomer; the entire sky feels like a graphical user interface to access astronomy and space science information. The software that makes it all possible was developed by Dr. Junkins and Daniele Mortari, associate professor of engineering at Texas A&M.

StarVision Technologies is a high-tech spin-off from technologies developed at Texas A&M University. Housed in Texas A&M's Research Park, StarVision Technologies is engineering innovative new intelligent vision technologies that are extending the reach of our soldiers and improving commercial inspection. StarVision products support a broad range of applications, including defense unmanned systems, space systems, robotics, and consumer products.

WWII Ship USS LST-325, Decorated D-Day Veteran, Salutes Alexandria, Va

The 63-year-old amphibious landing ship beats its schedule by a full day and anchors overnight at the Little Creek Amphibious Base, where thousands of LST sailors trained, before docking today in Old Town Alexandria, Va.

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) May 25, 2005 -- USS LST-325, a World War Two amphibious vessel known as a “Landing Ship, Tank” pulls into Old Town Alexandria, Va. today following a 1,700-mile voyage from Mobile, Ala. With the help of fair winds, following seas and a flawlessly performing ship, the crew arrived in Chesapeake Bay a full day ahead of schedule. It anchored overnight near the Little Creek Amphibious base, where thousands of these ships’ sailors have been trained.

The ship will be open to the public for four days. Tours will be conducted each day, from Friday, May 27 through Monday, Memorial Day. Hours are from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and the admission is $10.00 for visitors over 18, $5.00 for children over five and a special family rate of $20.00.

The ship will be docked at Robinson Terminal North. The gate entrance to the dock is located at the cross streets of Oronoco Street and Union Street, Old Town Alexandria, Va.

On Friday, Mayor William Euille will present the ship with a special proclamation and Captain Robert Jornlin will give the Mayor the keys to the bow doors. (This inside joke refers to a prank played upon unknowing new sailors who were told to fetch them. There are no keys to the bow doors.) They will then participate in a Memorial Service, followed by a tour of the ship.

The crewmembers hail from 23 states, with most of them being U.S. Navy veterans who served on our country’s LST’s at various times since 1942. They are bringing this ship to Alexandria, Va. and then to several ports in Massachusetts, so that those of us who appreciate the service of our veterans can board and explore the only operational LST museum ship in existence. Churchill referred to them as the ships that won the war.

Not all of the crewmembers are veterans. A few of them are serving in memory of their fathers who sailed on LST’s. They have learned the skills of their fathers from willing tutors who enjoy sharing with the younger generation, in the hope that they will keep alive the memory of these ships and the crews who sailed them.

After the ship leaves Alexandria she will proceed down Chesapeake Bay and around Cape Charles, and then head north to the Cape Cod Canal and Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where tours will be conducted from June 4 to June 7. Following that visit the ship moves onward to the Boston area and then on to Gloucester, before returning to Mobile, Ala. in time for Independence Day celebrations.

Further information is available on the ship’s website at www.LSTMemorial.org. USS LST-325 is owned and operated by The USS LST Ship Memorial, Inc., a non-profit corporation.

A Welder’s Daughter’s Emotional Journey as She Watches LST 325’s Current Voyage

I always knew that my mother was a welder in the shipyards during WWII. I didn’t know until 6 years ago that it was the LSTs that she welded. Today, as I watch the LST 325’s East Coast Voyage progress, I am so proud to have a connection with a type of ship that was instrumental in preserving our freedom.

(PRWEB) May 24, 2005 -- On May 17, 2005, LST 325 left Mobile, Alabama and started it’s East Coast Voyage to Alexandria, Virginia and other ports in Massachusetts. It has a crew of 40, including eight crewmembers who were part of the crew that sailed LST 325 back from Crete to Mobile four years ago.

When I was young, I knew that my mother and two aunts were welders in the Dravo, Neville Island shipyard in Pittsburgh during World War II because my mother would occasionally talk about it. It wasn’t until 1999, when Lester Parker, a former crew member of LST 743, invited my mother and aunts to an LST 743 reunion banquet being held in Pittsburgh that I realized how proud she was to have welded LSTs.

After listening to my mother talk about the reunion, I decided that I would write a book about the women welders. The book started out to be a book about women. But as I received letters from men who served aboard the LSTs in World War II and Korea, it evolved into a much broader story.

After the British evacuation of Dunkirk, Winston Churchill recognized the need for the ship that became know as the LST. The LST was specifically designed to land on the beaches of Africa and Europe. During WWII, 1,051 LSTs were constructed in U.S. shipyards. Forty were lost in WWII, which is less than 4 percent of the ships built. It was a well-designed and well-built ship.

My research took me to several Internet websites, including the one for LST 325, www.lstmemorial.org. In fact, as a result of LST 325’s visit to Evansville, Indiana in the summer of 2003, I was able to locate a few more women who were welders at the Evansville shipyard. Today, I am a member of this non-profit corporation. As I sit at my computer in Portland, Oregon, it is exciting to read the posts on the website about the ship’s progress and to even view its progress by going to http://www.shiptrak.org/?callsign=WW2LST.

LST 325 will arrive in Alexandria, Virginia and be open to the public on May 26, 2005. She will depart on the evening of May 30, 2005. She will be open to the public at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy from June 4th through June 7th, the Charlestown Navy Yard from June 9 through June 19th, and the USCG Station in Gloucester, MA on June 21st. A more detailed itinerary is located at www.lstmemorial.org.

While in port, the ship will be open to the public for tours from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm. Admission prices are $5 for children, $10 for adults and $20 for families (mother, father and children under 18). The proceeds are used to defray the expenses of restoration, maintenance and the voyage.

LST 325 is the only operational museum ship of its type. Her East Coast Voyage coincides with the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. I encourage you to visit the LST 325 in Alexandria or at one of its Massachusetts ports. You will gain a great respect for the LSTs, for those who served on them, and for those who built them. You will begin to feel the dedication the WWII crewmembers had for what they affectionately called their “Large Slow Targets.” A dedication that continues to this day.

Smart Guns Can Become a Reality with Sensor Technology

Sensor Products LLC has developed a unique sensor specifically for the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s highly publicized Smart Gun project.

(PRWEB) May 24, 2005 -- Reinforcing the ability to fully customize their Tactilus® line of electronic pressure measurement systems, Sensor Products LLC has developed a unique sensor specifically for the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s highly publicized Smart Gun project. Utilizing a resistive architecture, this newly designed system is the front-runner among other candidate technologies such as magnetic rings, transponders, combination locks and fingerprint recognition devices.

The urgency of the completion of this project is self-explanatory. Since 2000, when NJIT ventured to develop this technology with the aid of government funding, 24 children and adults have been killed in 15 separate school shootings. Fortunately, engineers at NJIT see the advantages of the Tactilus® sensor system being used on firearms to determine the grip of authorized users and are making great strides to finish this mass producible prototype by early 2006. In fact, Sensor Products recently delivered the second generation of their Tactilus® Smart Gun sensor to NJIT. Find out more at www.sensorprod.com.

Not only are the individual sensing points of this new Tactilus® system a mere 0.2 millimeters thick in order to prevent any compromise of a firearm’s integrity, but are still accurate even when the user wears gloves. Additionally, the system possesses electronics that can be miniaturized to fit into the handle along with the magazine by utilizing lithium ion batteries like ones found in PDA’s and cell phones.

“To get a product of this magnitude off the ground, we essentially partner with our customers—in this case the engineers at NJIT,” said Jeffrey Stark, senior technical manager at Sensor Products. “This project is crucial for the safety of today’s society and we will work tirelessly at being creative and flexible in our designs and will provide resolution to difficult problems that may arise in the development process.”

With a velocity of up to 1,000 Hz, the embedded sensors in Tactilus® can generate pressure readings with unprecedented speed and accuracy. Its thin and highly flexible substrate material allows for easy conformability to curvaceous surfaces such as the grip of a handgun. These inherent traits make Tactilus® ideal for conforming around the handle of a firearm to provide the most thorough and accurate pressure readings possible. These robust sensors can last thousands of uses with consistent repeatability and are highly resistant to electromagnetic noise, temperature and humidity fluctuations.

The Tactilus® systems collect pressure data and send an analog signal back to an intermediary data “hub” where it is converted to a digital signal. This signal contains the collected data and is subsequently sent to an interface (software) designed for easy viewing and dynamic analysis. Tactilus® Windows-based software provides 2-D and 3-D imaging, isobar and region-of-interest viewing, longitudinal and latitudinal analysis, graphical displays of data in bar charts, pressure vs. time, linescans and histograms, statistical analysis of average, minimum and maximum pressures, total force over any selected area and more. This data may also be exported to virtually any third party software.

For demonstrations or more information about Tactilus®, contact Sensor Products at 1.973.884.1755 or visit www.sensorprod.com/tactilus.

HomelandDefenseStocks.com Reports

HomelandDefenseStocks.com Reports: Military Contractors with Excess Cash Create Exciting Opportunities for Investors and Small Companies in the Sector That are Potential Targets for Acquisitions

Point Roberts, WA (PRWEB) May 20, 2005 -- www.HomelandDefenseStocks.com (HDS), an investor news portal for the homeland defense and security sector, reports that U.S. military and defense contractors are currently heavy in cash, with apparently $25 billion to $30 billion sitting with top military contractors. This is a direct result of government spending in homeland security and defense. Military defense contractors are therefore able to pay out cash dividends, spend the excess in R&D for technology, or to scout for targeted complementary acquisitions. With M&A activity predicted to have continued strong momentum, this creates exciting opportunities for investors and small companies in the sector that are potential targets for acquisitions.

Aviation Week and Space Technology first reported the large cash reserves.

Sales Outsourcing Firm Sales Partnerships, Inc. Announces Launch of New Division

Sales Partnerships, Inc. (SPI) the 2nd fastest growing small private business in Colorado (Denver Business Journal 2004) has announced the formation of a dedicated aviation sales division to compliment existing divisions in IT, HR, EHS, and business process outsourcing sales.

(PRWEB) May 19, 2005 -- Sales Partnerships, Inc. (SPI) the 2nd fastest growing small private business in Colorado (Denver Business Journal 2004) has announced the formation of a dedicated aviation sales division to compliment existing divisions in IT, HR, EHS, and business process outsourcing sales.

SPI culminated its efforts in aviation sales over the past three years with the creation of this division. Sales Partnerships President Fred Kessler was quoted as saying, “The SPI Aviation sales division follows the same systems and processes that has made SPI the sales outsourcing firm with the highest campaign success rate in the United States for other markets. Aviation is a great market because it is too often sold on spec sheets rather than business process. Companies don’t buy your software or service agreements because you have higher numbers on a technical read-out – they buy because you make a compelling business case that makes their life better.” During the past year, SPI’s has outsold every other company within its Aviation niche in the world. Kessler again, “It’s time to grow that division – the market needs us to help them make more money and the customer need better solutions.”

In other news, SPI was nominated for awards for the top company in Colorado in ColoradoBiz Magazine and will again be one of the fastest growing private firms in Colorado listed in upcoming Denver Business Journal.

Sales Partnerships (SPI) is a sales outsourcing firm dedicated to helping other companies reach their sales goals. Unlike sales consulting firms, SPI becomes the functioning sales force for their clients. SPI designs the sales program, recruits the reps, manages the reps, and closes the actual sales. SPI also has a division dedicated to advanced lead generation and sales set-up work.

Information about Sales Partnerships can be found at www.SalesPartnerships.com or call 877-554-3458.
