NovAtel Inc. (NASDAQ: NGPS), a precise positioning technology company, announced today that it has successfully demonstrated the performance of a dual mode GPS and Galileo L1/E5A dual frequency prototype receiver to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), developed under a contract awarded in September 2004.
Calgary, Alberta (PRWEB) May 31, 2005 -- NovAtel Inc. These receivers will be ready to accept signals from the first Galileo satellites scheduled to launch later this year or in early 2006. Galileo is Europe’s state-of-the-art satellite navigation system, which is expected to be operational by 2010/12 with up to 30 satellites orbiting the earth.
NovAtel is developing two sets of L1/E5A engineering receivers and L1/E5A transmitters for the CSA for use with Galileo satellites. The receiver is being integrated into a modified version of NovAtel’s WAAS-GII system, which also includes the Euro-3M L1/L2 dual frequency GPS receiver. The signal generator is based on a previous design built for the new U.S. Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) uplink system.
“This is the first operational, near-production standard, dual mode GPS and Galileo dual frequency receiver in North America,” said Tony Murfin, VP Business Development at NovAtel. “We are particularly pleased to have the receiver working this early in the CSA program. We believe the technology we are creating here is unique, and will enable NovAtel to provide GPS/Galileo receiver solutions worldwide and, hopefully, in the ground infrastructure of the Galileo system itself.”
Currently, NovAtel supplies GPS navigational receivers to a number of national satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS) around the world, including the U.S. WAAS, European EGNOS, Japanese MSAS, Chinese SNAS, and, more recently, the Gagan system in India. These complex receivers incorporate NovAtel’s Narrow Correlator® tracking technology, MEDLL multipath reduction technology and Signal Quality Monitoring, and receive and process both WAAS L1/L5 GEO and GPS L1/L2/L5 signals.

Small Planes More at Risk to Crash?
Conventional thinking that small RPT aircraft are more at risk from loading errors is challenged by private researcher and inventor, Captain Geoff Ogilvie. Not enough research or study has been done by government and I believe the risk to large aircraft from loading errors is greater than realized by many in the industry. There is a solution however within reach. It is a patent pending system called Avibridge.
(PRWEB) May 30, 2005 -- Conventional aviation thinking that small regular public transport (RPT) aircraft are more at risk to loading errors than their larger RPT cousins is challenged by independent researcher and Avibridge ™ inventor, Geoff Ogilvie.
Geoff is concerned that the sole evidence available to investigators, in many large jet aircraft accidents, is the 85 year old paper based weight & balance system, known as the load data sheet.
“This (Lack of alternative evidence) gives rise to what I call the Ice Berg Effect.” Said the retired airline captain.
Smaller aircraft that crash after take off can generally be easily reconstructed and their weight & balance determined independently from the load sheet data.
This was the case in small RPT aircraft Cessna Caravan 208B that killed ten people, nine Canadians and one American, late Saturday, January 17, last year when the small plane crashed into Lake Erie after having taken off from Pelee Island, Ontario, Canada.
This crash that is still under investigation by TSB Canada has caused the release of the following interim information:
The maximum take-off weight in the Cessna aircraft manual is 8750 pounds (cargo pod installed) or 8550 pounds if flying into known icing conditions. The investigation determined that the actual weight of the occurrence aircraft on departure from Pelee Island was approximately 9820 pounds, 1270 pounds over gross weight.
However large aircraft due to;
- higher impact speed;
- larger fuel load;
- more destructive post crash fire are;
-often lost over deep water or,
- inaccessible mountainous terrain,
are more difficult to reconstruct post crash. Often there is little or no aircraft structure, baggage, cargo, fuel or human tissue left to be weighed and relocated on the recovered aircraft.
His concern is shared by many in the accident investigation business, including Acting Chairman Mark Rosenker US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
“The conventional industry logic considers the simplistic ratio of loading error to aircraft weight rather than a more in depth analysis of the many systemic and analytical risks to safety from loading errors.” Stated Captain Ogilvie. I have developed a useful tool called the WBS Threat & Error Model that can be used to determine true aircraft risk of accident from loading error.
The simplistic ratio logic used by many in the industry states that:
A comparison of various aircraft types indicates that the ratio of passenger weight to overall aircraft weight is inversely proportional to the size of the aircraft. For example, in a Boeing 747, the passenger weight represents approximately 9 per cent of the aircraft's weight (450 passengers at 188 pounds, aircraft of 875 000 pounds) whereas the passenger weight in a Caravan can represent approximately 22 per cent (10 passengers at 188 pounds, aircraft of 8550 pounds).
“Nobody knows for sure the true weight or balance of commercial aircraft. They are never weighed or balanced by external means except during a hangar check every few years, and then the aircraft is weighed empty.” Continued Geoff.
The aviation industry has relied on an 85 year old paper based system of computation to determine aircraft weight & balance prior to take off. The system is colloquially known as the load sheet.
A recent fatal accident involving MK Airlines B747 Cargo aircraft that crashed after take off on Runway 34 at Halifax International, Nova Scotia, Canada on October 14, 2004 is a case in point. The accident, which is still under investigation by TSB Canada is being closely followed by many in the industry to determine what part, loading error played in causing this crash.
If, as is suspected by many, the load sheet is the only evidence available to accident investigators then another case can be filed under the surface of the Ice Berg Effect. A valuable chance to gain more accurate weight & balance data on large RPT aircraft accidents will be lost to researchers like Captain Ogilvie.
“If there had been an External Weight & Balance System (EWBS) like Avibridge ™ in use at Halifax then the true threat to aircraft safety due loading error could have been measured, said Avibridge inventor Geoff Ogilvie.
“When are regulators going to face up to their responsibilities and fund research and development to produce a system that is independent, accurate, and verifiable and provides a final check and warning to the pilot of overweight or out of balance condition prior to take off.” Concluded Geoff Ogilvie.

Dallas Incubator Sees a Trend or Two
Incucomm says an exit from its facility is part of the new realties in startups. Xterprise, a provider of RFID solutions and systems, is moving out of Incucomm, a business incubator in June.
Dallas, TX (PRWEB) May 29, 2005 -- “Xterprise was founded by Dean Frew in 2002, after 9/11 during the tech bubble bursting. It was a venture capital ice age,” said Steve Roemerman, Incucomm’s CEO. “No institutional money was seeding new companies when Dean started, so it’s impressive to see the firm now. When Dean moved in, Xterprise did not have a name, and he was the only person involved. Now they have dozens of people, have raised two rounds of financing from an excellent VC (Logispring), and have installed their solutions in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. They have an impressive line with hardware, software, and services. They have important patents pending and other interesting intellectual property. Xterprise shows that high quality companies can be started from scratch, in tough times.”
Roemerman said Xterprise reflected trends Incucomm has observed:
- Early stage firms must bootstrap, find angel funding or both until they meet the more conservative standards of current institutional investors
- This reality favors companies with pragmatic offerings, and founders with strong domain knowledge
- Venture economics in the US are cyclical in terms of investment activity, and in terms of the phases of firms targeted for investments
- The small number of startups with vintage years of 2001 - 04 is creating a supply and demand imbalance, pushing valuations up
“We are excited for Xterprise, and proud to be associated with them,” said Matt Bowers, Incucomm’s Chief Development Officer. Bowers noted Xterprise has sold into some of the largest companies in the world, in many cases winning in head to head competition with larger, more established firms. “People do business with people,” Bowers noted, “Dean Frew’s knowledge of the logistics space, and his strong personal reputation made an incredible difference while Xterprise was building its brand. Now they are partnered with other RFID leaders, like Alien, Apriso, Red Prairie, Symbol, and Zebra. They have clients in a number of verticals, including consumer package goods, technology, and medical. It is striking to see what they have accomplished.”
Xterprise will move to new facilities in Carrollton and will boast one of the most comprehensive RFID application and demonstration facilities in the world.

Southwest Airlines Applauds House Bill to Repeal Wright Amendment
Dallas, TX (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) May 26, 2005 -- Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) today applauds two Texas Republican congressmen who have introduced a bill to immediately repeal the Wright Amendment. U.S. Reps. Jeb Hensarling and Sam Johnson call their bill "The Right to Fly Act," which is the first to be introduced since the need for the Wright Amendment was last called into question in November 2004.
Southwest Airlines applauds the tremendous leadership and vision of these two Texas congressmen who have tapped into the true will of the people. This is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of opening the skies for greater access to low fares through unfettered airline competition. In addition, these two Texas congressman recognize the importance of cracking the 26-year deadbolt that has artificially suppressed access to the Dallas/Ft. Worth market because of high air fares.
While this is a major step forward, it is just the beginning, and our People will remain steadfast in their efforts to educate the public on the importance of stimulating the economy through greater access to low fare air travel. We are gratified by this mobilizing effort in the House and look forward to a similar effort in the Senate.

Southwest Airlines Chairman Offers Remarks on Bill to Repeal Wright Amendment
Today, Southwest Airlines Chairman Herb Kelleher commented on legislation introduced by two Texas congressmen to repeal the Wright Amendment that unfairly restricts flights at Dallas Love Field.
Dallas, TX (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) May 26, 2005 -- Today, Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) Chairman Herb Kelleher commented on legislation introduced by two Texas congressmen to repeal the Wright Amendment that unfairly restricts flights at Dallas Love Field. The following are excerpts from a press briefing:
"Southwest Airlines has been a bonanza in markets where we are allowed to offer unbridled, unconstrained, unshackled, low-fare service; not only by increasing traffic, but by creating a boon to local economic development," said Herb Kelleher, Southwest Airlines Executive Chairman. "Any time competition is fettered, it is a penalty to consumers.
"The size of Southwest Airlines' task force may pale in comparison to our competitors," Kelleher continued. "All we have is truth, right and justice on our side -- which makes us very successful. Those who are working to abolish the amendment are standing for the American people, for consumerism, and for free enterprise.
"There are crazy, weird, bizarre restrictions about what passengers can and can't do at Love Field; getting rid of the restrictions would be a considerable boon to the United States and our Customers. We are asking Congress to eliminate limitations that should have never been imposed in the first place; we are asking for the freedom to compete," Kelleher concluded.
"The Right to Fly Act" is the first legislation to be introduced since the need for the Wright Amendment was last called into question in November 2004. The 26-year-old congressional amendment limits nonstop flights from Dallas' Love Field airport to Texas and its four touching states (three additional states were added in 1997). StarVision Technologies Secures Exclusive License to Star Identification Software
StarVision signs exclusive licensing agreement with Texas A&M University for star identification software.
College Station, TX (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) May 26, 2005 -- StarVision Technologies has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with Texas A&M University for star identification software that enables satellites to autonomously determine their orientation with only the stars as their guide. The same software will allow those of us on earth to identify stars in the night sky with the simple click of a high tech pointing device; no star maps or telescopes required.
"This is a huge step for StarVision," explains StarVision Technologies President Michael Jacox. "Even as we worked to secure the license from A&M, StarVision was investing in development of autonomous navigation and star identification products. It feels great knowing that we've secured the exclusive rights to put this software to work and we intend to do so right away."
Already, StarVision has two products developed that employ the algorithms and ingenuity of the three pieces of star identification software. StarVision's advanced Star Tracker concepts will support more responsive deployment of spacecraft, and allow for more autonomous on-board calibration and adjustment to the space environment.
Dr. John Junkins, Distinguished Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M University and a member of the National Academy of Engineering, led the development the concepts behind the star identification software.
"This software is the result of collaboration between me and my colleague, Dr. Daniele Mortari. Dr. Mortari's contributions were instrumental. Along with our students, we have developed and tested a suite of software that rapidly identifies stars in the 'lost in space mode,' without any prior navigation information," Junkins explains. "The software operates on images from a star camera and within a fraction of a second identifies star patterns reliably, and automatically re-calibrates the camera if any changes occur due to long term exposure in the harsh space environment. This algorithm represents a significant breakthrough, because sorting through the tens of millions of possibilities makes brute force methods unattractive."
The same suite of software can be used for commercial applications on Earth to accurately identify stars even within our atmosphere. StarTagger, StarVision's handheld star identifier, let's anyone who can point at a star in the night sky identify constellations and find out just what star they're looking at. This invention makes it possible for anyone to immediately become a proficient amateur astronomer; the entire sky feels like a graphical user interface to access astronomy and space science information. The software that makes it all possible was developed by Dr. Junkins and Daniele Mortari, associate professor of engineering at Texas A&M.
StarVision Technologies is a high-tech spin-off from technologies developed at Texas A&M University. Housed in Texas A&M's Research Park, StarVision Technologies is engineering innovative new intelligent vision technologies that are extending the reach of our soldiers and improving commercial inspection. StarVision products support a broad range of applications, including defense unmanned systems, space systems, robotics, and consumer products.

WWII Ship USS LST-325, Decorated D-Day Veteran, Salutes Alexandria, Va
The 63-year-old amphibious landing ship beats its schedule by a full day and anchors overnight at the Little Creek Amphibious Base, where thousands of LST sailors trained, before docking today in Old Town Alexandria, Va.
Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) May 25, 2005 -- USS LST-325, a World War Two amphibious vessel known as a “Landing Ship, Tank” pulls into Old Town Alexandria, Va. today following a 1,700-mile voyage from Mobile, Ala. With the help of fair winds, following seas and a flawlessly performing ship, the crew arrived in Chesapeake Bay a full day ahead of schedule. It anchored overnight near the Little Creek Amphibious base, where thousands of these ships’ sailors have been trained.
The ship will be open to the public for four days. Tours will be conducted each day, from Friday, May 27 through Monday, Memorial Day. Hours are from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and the admission is $10.00 for visitors over 18, $5.00 for children over five and a special family rate of $20.00.
The ship will be docked at Robinson Terminal North. The gate entrance to the dock is located at the cross streets of Oronoco Street and Union Street, Old Town Alexandria, Va.
On Friday, Mayor William Euille will present the ship with a special proclamation and Captain Robert Jornlin will give the Mayor the keys to the bow doors. (This inside joke refers to a prank played upon unknowing new sailors who were told to fetch them. There are no keys to the bow doors.) They will then participate in a Memorial Service, followed by a tour of the ship.
The crewmembers hail from 23 states, with most of them being U.S. Navy veterans who served on our country’s LST’s at various times since 1942. They are bringing this ship to Alexandria, Va. and then to several ports in Massachusetts, so that those of us who appreciate the service of our veterans can board and explore the only operational LST museum ship in existence. Churchill referred to them as the ships that won the war.
Not all of the crewmembers are veterans. A few of them are serving in memory of their fathers who sailed on LST’s. They have learned the skills of their fathers from willing tutors who enjoy sharing with the younger generation, in the hope that they will keep alive the memory of these ships and the crews who sailed them.
After the ship leaves Alexandria she will proceed down Chesapeake Bay and around Cape Charles, and then head north to the Cape Cod Canal and Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where tours will be conducted from June 4 to June 7. Following that visit the ship moves onward to the Boston area and then on to Gloucester, before returning to Mobile, Ala. in time for Independence Day celebrations.
Further information is available on the ship’s website at www.LSTMemorial.org. USS LST-325 is owned and operated by The USS LST Ship Memorial, Inc., a non-profit corporation.

A Welder’s Daughter’s Emotional Journey as She Watches LST 325’s Current Voyage
I always knew that my mother was a welder in the shipyards during WWII. I didn’t know until 6 years ago that it was the LSTs that she welded. Today, as I watch the LST 325’s East Coast Voyage progress, I am so proud to have a connection with a type of ship that was instrumental in preserving our freedom.
(PRWEB) May 24, 2005 -- On May 17, 2005, LST 325 left Mobile, Alabama and started it’s East Coast Voyage to Alexandria, Virginia and other ports in Massachusetts. It has a crew of 40, including eight crewmembers who were part of the crew that sailed LST 325 back from Crete to Mobile four years ago.
When I was young, I knew that my mother and two aunts were welders in the Dravo, Neville Island shipyard in Pittsburgh during World War II because my mother would occasionally talk about it. It wasn’t until 1999, when Lester Parker, a former crew member of LST 743, invited my mother and aunts to an LST 743 reunion banquet being held in Pittsburgh that I realized how proud she was to have welded LSTs.
After listening to my mother talk about the reunion, I decided that I would write a book about the women welders. The book started out to be a book about women. But as I received letters from men who served aboard the LSTs in World War II and Korea, it evolved into a much broader story.
After the British evacuation of Dunkirk, Winston Churchill recognized the need for the ship that became know as the LST. The LST was specifically designed to land on the beaches of Africa and Europe. During WWII, 1,051 LSTs were constructed in U.S. shipyards. Forty were lost in WWII, which is less than 4 percent of the ships built. It was a well-designed and well-built ship.
My research took me to several Internet websites, including the one for LST 325, www.lstmemorial.org. In fact, as a result of LST 325’s visit to Evansville, Indiana in the summer of 2003, I was able to locate a few more women who were welders at the Evansville shipyard. Today, I am a member of this non-profit corporation. As I sit at my computer in Portland, Oregon, it is exciting to read the posts on the website about the ship’s progress and to even view its progress by going to http://www.shiptrak.org/?callsign=WW2LST.
LST 325 will arrive in Alexandria, Virginia and be open to the public on May 26, 2005. She will depart on the evening of May 30, 2005. She will be open to the public at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy from June 4th through June 7th, the Charlestown Navy Yard from June 9 through June 19th, and the USCG Station in Gloucester, MA on June 21st. A more detailed itinerary is located at www.lstmemorial.org.
While in port, the ship will be open to the public for tours from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm. Admission prices are $5 for children, $10 for adults and $20 for families (mother, father and children under 18). The proceeds are used to defray the expenses of restoration, maintenance and the voyage.
LST 325 is the only operational museum ship of its type. Her East Coast Voyage coincides with the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. I encourage you to visit the LST 325 in Alexandria or at one of its Massachusetts ports. You will gain a great respect for the LSTs, for those who served on them, and for those who built them. You will begin to feel the dedication the WWII crewmembers had for what they affectionately called their “Large Slow Targets.” A dedication that continues to this day.
Kathleen Thomas is author of the book, “Don’t Call Me Rosie, the Women who Welded the LSTs and the Men who Sailed on Them.”

Smart Guns Can Become a Reality with Sensor Technology
Sensor Products LLC has developed a unique sensor specifically for the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s highly publicized Smart Gun project.
(PRWEB) May 24, 2005 -- Reinforcing the ability to fully customize their Tactilus® line of electronic pressure measurement systems, Sensor Products LLC has developed a unique sensor specifically for the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s highly publicized Smart Gun project. Utilizing a resistive architecture, this newly designed system is the front-runner among other candidate technologies such as magnetic rings, transponders, combination locks and fingerprint recognition devices.
The urgency of the completion of this project is self-explanatory. Since 2000, when NJIT ventured to develop this technology with the aid of government funding, 24 children and adults have been killed in 15 separate school shootings. Fortunately, engineers at NJIT see the advantages of the Tactilus® sensor system being used on firearms to determine the grip of authorized users and are making great strides to finish this mass producible prototype by early 2006. In fact, Sensor Products recently delivered the second generation of their Tactilus® Smart Gun sensor to NJIT. Find out more at www.sensorprod.com.
Not only are the individual sensing points of this new Tactilus® system a mere 0.2 millimeters thick in order to prevent any compromise of a firearm’s integrity, but are still accurate even when the user wears gloves. Additionally, the system possesses electronics that can be miniaturized to fit into the handle along with the magazine by utilizing lithium ion batteries like ones found in PDA’s and cell phones.
“To get a product of this magnitude off the ground, we essentially partner with our customers—in this case the engineers at NJIT,” said Jeffrey Stark, senior technical manager at Sensor Products. “This project is crucial for the safety of today’s society and we will work tirelessly at being creative and flexible in our designs and will provide resolution to difficult problems that may arise in the development process.”
With a velocity of up to 1,000 Hz, the embedded sensors in Tactilus® can generate pressure readings with unprecedented speed and accuracy. Its thin and highly flexible substrate material allows for easy conformability to curvaceous surfaces such as the grip of a handgun. These inherent traits make Tactilus® ideal for conforming around the handle of a firearm to provide the most thorough and accurate pressure readings possible. These robust sensors can last thousands of uses with consistent repeatability and are highly resistant to electromagnetic noise, temperature and humidity fluctuations.
The Tactilus® systems collect pressure data and send an analog signal back to an intermediary data “hub” where it is converted to a digital signal. This signal contains the collected data and is subsequently sent to an interface (software) designed for easy viewing and dynamic analysis. Tactilus® Windows-based software provides 2-D and 3-D imaging, isobar and region-of-interest viewing, longitudinal and latitudinal analysis, graphical displays of data in bar charts, pressure vs. time, linescans and histograms, statistical analysis of average, minimum and maximum pressures, total force over any selected area and more. This data may also be exported to virtually any third party software.
For demonstrations or more information about Tactilus®, contact Sensor Products at 1.973.884.1755 or visit www.sensorprod.com/tactilus.

HomelandDefenseStocks.com Reports
HomelandDefenseStocks.com Reports: Military Contractors with Excess Cash Create Exciting Opportunities for Investors and Small Companies in the Sector That are Potential Targets for Acquisitions
Point Roberts, WA (PRWEB) May 20, 2005 -- www.HomelandDefenseStocks.com (HDS), an investor news portal for the homeland defense and security sector, reports that U.S. military and defense contractors are currently heavy in cash, with apparently $25 billion to $30 billion sitting with top military contractors. This is a direct result of government spending in homeland security and defense. Military defense contractors are therefore able to pay out cash dividends, spend the excess in R&D for technology, or to scout for targeted complementary acquisitions. With M&A activity predicted to have continued strong momentum, this creates exciting opportunities for investors and small companies in the sector that are potential targets for acquisitions.
Aviation Week and Space Technology first reported the large cash reserves.

Sales Outsourcing Firm Sales Partnerships, Inc. Announces Launch of New Division
Sales Partnerships, Inc. (SPI) the 2nd fastest growing small private business in Colorado (Denver Business Journal 2004) has announced the formation of a dedicated aviation sales division to compliment existing divisions in IT, HR, EHS, and business process outsourcing sales.
(PRWEB) May 19, 2005 -- Sales Partnerships, Inc. (SPI) the 2nd fastest growing small private business in Colorado (Denver Business Journal 2004) has announced the formation of a dedicated aviation sales division to compliment existing divisions in IT, HR, EHS, and business process outsourcing sales.
SPI culminated its efforts in aviation sales over the past three years with the creation of this division. Sales Partnerships President Fred Kessler was quoted as saying, “The SPI Aviation sales division follows the same systems and processes that has made SPI the sales outsourcing firm with the highest campaign success rate in the United States for other markets. Aviation is a great market because it is too often sold on spec sheets rather than business process. Companies don’t buy your software or service agreements because you have higher numbers on a technical read-out – they buy because you make a compelling business case that makes their life better.” During the past year, SPI’s has outsold every other company within its Aviation niche in the world. Kessler again, “It’s time to grow that division – the market needs us to help them make more money and the customer need better solutions.”
In other news, SPI was nominated for awards for the top company in Colorado in ColoradoBiz Magazine and will again be one of the fastest growing private firms in Colorado listed in upcoming Denver Business Journal.
Sales Partnerships (SPI) is a sales outsourcing firm dedicated to helping other companies reach their sales goals. Unlike sales consulting firms, SPI becomes the functioning sales force for their clients. SPI designs the sales program, recruits the reps, manages the reps, and closes the actual sales. SPI also has a division dedicated to advanced lead generation and sales set-up work.
Information about Sales Partnerships can be found at www.SalesPartnerships.com or call 877-554-3458.

Here is a sample of a few questions:
1. We have Sweet Gas Pipeline that contain a noticeable amount of black powder (Iron Oxides and Iron Sulfides) what will be the best filtration system for it Please note that the line size is 56" dia.
2. I have an aqueous and a solvent based systems with 5-150 micron pigment particles. What filtration system do you recommend for a batch(2000 gal)or 33 gal/min continuous operation.
3. I am looking for an alternative to our current method of filtration. We are filtering high viscosity materials (50,000 cps) at 15 microns. We are using wire mesh cloth and our of our major problems is blinding of the mesh. Our runs are short (less that 100 gallons), so I am looking for small units with minimal dead volume.
RPA Process Technologies owns four brands that have been in the filtration business for over one-hundred years. They are Ronningen-Petter, Filtres Philippe, Filtres Vernay, and Malaxeurs Guittard.
Here is your chance to let them share their knowledge gained by experience with you!

Digital Control Systems Launches the New Model 90 PID Controller
The newest PID controller from Digital Control Systems. An ideal control for OEM Equipment Manufacturers servicing the global marketplace. The Model works from 80 - 280 VAC without modification, and can accept multiple inputs, including RTD probes, and thermocouples.
(PRWEB) May 18, 2005 -- Ideal for Equipment Manufacturers the Digital Control Systems, Inc. Model 90 PID Controller is the latest evolution in the Multistat series of temperature controls. Designed for the global equipment market, the Model 90 PID Controller can operate from direct or alternating current power mains from 80 to 280 volts, so it can be used anywhere in the world without modification or adjustment. “We developed the Model 90 in response to our customers who sell to the international market and who had to juggle the logistics involved with the various voltage requirements around the world -- in addition to flexible load and voltage requirements, the Model 90 is robust and reliable,” said Mike Mueller, President and founder of Digital Control Systems, Inc.
This single-channel PID controller will accurately control single electrical loads of up to 15 Amps. All of the Model 90 control electronics and the user interface are built on a compact (13.5 x 6 cm) circuit board for easy mounting and integration into medical, laboratory, and industrial equipment. Large bright LED digits make the display easy to read from across the room.
Recognizing the considerable safety benefits to be gained from reducing high voltage wiring, Digital Control Systems, Inc, designed the Model 90 to feature a second smaller power module that can be located near the output. This eliminates the need to run high current wiring to the front control panel. As an additional benefit, this power module is connected to the main circuit board with a low voltage cable. A second power module can also be added to control an auxiliary load.
The Model 90 offers more options than similar controls in the Multistat™ family of temperature controls. The extensive options available for the Model 90 make it easy for equipment manufacturers to differentiate similar products. Options such as an audible alarm, two pole alarm relay, RS-232, or a timer can be added individually based on application requirements. The optional RS-232 interface feature enables remote operation and data logging. “Rather than bundle all of the available features, we prefer to offer our customers options on a one by one basis, this way they aren’t paying for features they aren’t going to use”, adds Mike Mueller.
The Model 90 temperature controller works with a variety of inputs. For direct temperature control the Model 90 can be used with economical IC sensors (for operation below 100 °C), RTDs, or type ‘J’ and ‘K’ thermocouples. A direct voltage (5 volts Max) input configuration is also available for control of parameters measured by external sensors such as humidity or CO2.
Digital Control Systems Inc. is based in Portland, Oregon and has been designing and manufacturing a wide array of temperature controllers, motor speed controls, CO2 Sensors and Custom Products since 1984. The DCS family of products includes, the AirSense CO2 Monitor, Laboratory CO2 Sensor solutions, the Servomax DC Motor Speed Control, and the Multistat line of Temperature Control products. Technical information and brochures for the Model 90 and all of the Digital Control Systems products can be accessed online at www.dcs-inc.net.

Mobile, AL (PRWEB) May 17, 2005 -- “Anchor’s Aweigh!” was the cry heard along the waterfront in Mobile, Ala. on Tuesday as USS LST 325 set sail under her own power for the first time in four years. The proud veteran warship headed toward the Gulf of Mexico on its way to ports of call on the East Coast. LST 325 served in the European Theater, earning two battle stars. She was involved in the invasion of Italy and made 44 round trips during the D-Day invasion.
The ship and crew’s mission is to increase public awareness of the role and history of the LST (Landing Ship, Tank) in World War II, Korea and Viet Nam, as well as to provide a memorial to the veterans who fought and died on them. LST’s were designed specifically to land directly on enemy shores with mission-ready tanks, troops and supplies, unloaded through doors and a ramp at the bow of the ship.
LST 325 is the only operational ship of its kind in its original wartime configuration. It is the ship that gained national attention in 2001 when it was sailed back to this country from Greece by a group of 28 veterans whose average age was 72 years old. It has since been lovingly restored by crewmembers and volunteers to preserve the history of these ships and their crews.
The ship is expected to arrive at Alexandria, Va. on May 26. It will later visit various ports in the Boston area, where it will escort the USS Constitution on a harbor turnaround and participate in Department of Defense celebrations honoring the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. Thousands of visitors are expected to tour the 328-foot ship, whose tank deck could hold up to twenty Sherman tanks.
While in port, the ship will be open to the public for tours from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm. Admission prices are $5 for children, $10 for adults and $20 for families, the proceeds of which are used to defray the expenses of restoration, maintenance and the voyage.
Radiomen aboard the ship will be conducting amateur radio operations during the trip. Operating frequencies and schedules may be found on the ship’s website at www.LSTMemorial.org. Also available are an itinerary for the voyage, along with historical and other information. Donations are encouraged.

Major Automotive Company Generates Over $60,000 of Annual Savings
In an effort to reduce operating costs, a major automotive company generated over $60,000 of annual savings, and a Return on Investment (ROI) in less than three months on their filter purchase. The idea was to discard the OEM-equipped replaceable media filters with the NEW Ronningen-Petter® self-cleaning magnetically coupled filter.
(PRWEB) May 16, 2005 -- The process in question was a group of three machining centers that machine aluminum transmission parts. The fluid to be filtered--machine tool coolant--is designed to lubricate, cool, and flush contaminants away from the part and tool. The fluid is collected under the machining operation where it is routed through a set of weirs to separate out the large particulate. A pump then sends the fluid to a housing containing three large 75-micron cartridge filters.
The filters needed to be replaced three times per week, generating a tremendous amount of annual costs to the automotive company. An in-house filtration audit highlighted the recurring high costs of the cartridges cost of disposal labor for change out machining down time. Other costs and inconveniences include tool life concerns, the inability to separate harmful chips from the fluid, all resulting in borderline product quality and safety concerns.
In their search for a solution for the costly and recurring problem, the customer selected a Ronningen-Petter Magnetically Coupled Filter (MCF), which features a permanent self-cleaning slotted filter media, which effectively removes the harmful aluminum chips and fines from the coolant. The automotive company chose the Ronningen-Petter MCF filter for its spring-loaded cleaning disc design that continuously regenerates the open area of the filter media.
The engineers responsible for the machining centers requested tighter filtration, 50 micron, upon installation as a potential opportunity to increase tool life. The new Ronningen-Petter MCF filter was installed seamlessly into the existing space of the removed cartridge filter.
The new Ronningen-Petter MCF permanent self-cleaning filtration equipment positively affected the machining centers with its ability to more efficiently manage the full coolant flow and chip loading. The more efficient cleaning cycle and purge frequency were adjusted to meet the customer's needs. Extending the cycle times greatly increased the life of the moving parts, and allowed for a greater concentration of chips to be discharged. The purge, or concentrated chip stream, was rerouted three weeks into the installation back to a large paper band filter for recycling purposes.
The quality of the filtrate under the Ronningen-Petter MCF filter was evaluated every shift for the first few weeks to ensure the quality of the machined parts. Full evaluation of the economic impact of the MCF installation was completed following three months of continuous operation. The final review determined that the Ronningen-Petter MCF paid for itself within that three-month evaluation period.
How the MCF Works
Machining fluids enter the filter at the top inlet connection and flow into the 316L stainless-steel filter element. As the liquid passes from the inside to the outside of the filter element, unwanted particles are retained on the inside of the slotted screen. Filtered coolant passes thru the outlet connection to the downstream requirement.
With the Ronningen-Petter MCF filter, the collected debris is automatically wiped from the filter media by a cleaning disc that deposits the solids in the lower chamber of the housing, out of the flow path. An adjustable timer sets the cleaning disc stroke frequency.
Periodically, the collected debris gathered by the cleaning disc is purged from the lower chamber in less than a second, using system pressure. Like the stroke frequency, an adjustable timer presets the purge timer.
With shrinking budgets, increased production and reduction of labor forces, mechanically cleaned filtration such as the Ronningen-Petter MCF filter offers a tremendous advantage over replaceable media.

Southwest Airlines Delivers the Heat with Hot Summer Fares
Let DING! plan your next vacation.
Dallas, TX (PRWEB) May 12, 2005 -- Southwest Airlines became the first airline to revolutionize the Customer relationship with the launch of its new product DING!, the first-ever "direct link" to Customers' computer desktops. DING! delivers discounted fares to a variety of Southwest destinations. To download DING! and gain access to hot, subscriber-only fares, go to: www.southwest.com/ding/?src=PR_ding_051205.
"DING! is one of the hottest and most innovative travel tools for super cheap airfares on the Internet," said Tom Parsons, publisher of bestfares.com and well-known travel expert. "You can find airfares on DING! that are cheaper than a tank of gas."
DING! allows Customers access to fares that are lower than Southwest's already-discounted Internet specials. DING! is customized for each user, offering fares as low as $29 one-way from the Customer's home airport, with a 21-day advance purchase. The rock-bottom fares are available only to DING! subscribers and have a limited booking window.
"DING! is an air traveler's blue light special in the sky," Parsons said. "Only Southwest Airlines would dare to offer fares this low."
Since DING! was announced, Southwest Customers nationwide have taken advantage of the money-saving technology. The top Southwest cities to download DING! are Baltimore, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Oakland and Phoenix. The airline expects the number of DING! downloads to grow as Customers look for low fares this summer.
"We introduced DING! on February 28," said Kevin Krone, Southwest's Vice President of Interactive Marketing. "Since that time, Customers have booked more than $10 million worth of fares through DING! – showing us that people are enjoying these super-low prices."
Southwest delivers catchy DING! alert messages that address the current travel environment such as, "Gas prices are high. It’s no joke! Fly on Southwest to avoid going broke." DING! creates excitement on getting the "hottest deal," provides increased value to Customers, and adds convenience to booking travel.
Southwest Airlines is known for being "high tech and high touch." It has a reputation for legendary delivery of Customer Service that has not been compromised with the growth in popularity of the web. Southwest was the first airline with a web site, and March 2005 marked the 10th anniversary of the launch of its site. It's now one of the top travel sites and the only airline web site that regularly makes it in the top rankings for popularity, ease of use, and revenue generation (more than $3 billion annually is booked through southwest.com).
Fare Rules
Fares are available one-way and are combinable with all other fares. When combining fares, all ticketing restrictions apply. Seats are limited. Fares may vary by flight and day of week and will not be available on some flights that operate during very busy travel times. Fares are valid for travel on Southwest Airlines. POINT ROBERTS, Wash.; May 11, 2005 - www.HomelandDefenseStocks.com (HDS), an investor news portal for the homeland defense and security sector, is pleased to provide an online audio interview with Homeland Defense correspondent Jim Smith. Mr. Smith is a business defense correspondent and print journalist for the trade magazine Jane’s Defence Weekly, as well as being a frequent on-air television personality on MSNBC, CNN and the BBC discussing investment opportunities and financial activity within the defense, aerospace, and naval sectors.
During the interview, Mr. Smith discussed the overall Homeland Defense industry, covering M&A and IPO activity, as well as the fact that many opportunities currently exist for smaller companies within this sector as acquisition targets for larger conglomerates. “The activity for smaller companies far exceeds that of the larger companies,” said Smith. “This is due in part to the lack of critical mass required for smaller companies, particularly within the IT sector, to launch their own IPOs.”

Major Acquisition Announced by MDM Group
MDM Group to Acquire Leading Oral Fluid Diagnostic and Testing Interest for $4 Million
Santa Clara, CA (PRWEB) May 11, 2005 -- MDM Group, Inc. (OTC.PK: MDDM) advises that it has entered into agreement to acquire all the issued capital of leading oral fluid (saliva) diagnostic group, Bamburgh Marrsh LLC (See: www.bamburghmarrsh.com) in consideration of payment of $4 million and the provision of further development and working capital funds. The transaction is in the process of due diligence completion and is expected to close within 30 days.
As referenced within an Interview published by the Wall Street Journal last April 19: "A sample of saliva can have within it DNA, RNA, proteins, germs, viruses, fatty acids and a host of interesting molecules useful in disease detection...whatever is in the blood is also in saliva. It is, in fact, a reflection of our blood, its a blood filtrate..."
Oral fluid testing and/or diagnosis is being rapidly established as an extremely economic, efficient and non-invasive process that through Bamburgh Marrsh technology will be capable of delivering instant on-the-spot results as opposed to the far more expensive, invasive and delayed results of tests using urine or blood samples.
Bamburgh Marrsh has three significant areas of operation:
1. Substance Abuse Testing -- This business initiative is fully developed and ready for immediate commercialization with major application for on-the-spot drug testing for Law Enforcement use, employment screening and sports testing. The significant advantage that Bamburgh Marrsh has in these fields is that patent-pending collection devices (one of only two that are FDA approved) are used that enable oral fluid samples to be split -- one for analysis and one that can be retained to, for example, preserve the integrity of evidence or challenge. The other major advantages of the testing system is that it is instant, truly portable -- handheld -- and has instant test result printing capability. To the Company's knowledge these capabilities are unique.
2. Clinical Diagnostics -- Several significant diagnostic applications are in development. Bamburgh Marrsh is dedicated to providing effective screening tools that may be applied for the early detection of diseases and medical disorders utilizing non-invasive test specimens such as oral fluids.
3. Bio-defense -- Following recently announced official notification of its registered status as an "ISTC Partner," the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) provides MDM with clear access to accelerate its ongoing development of its biodefense capabilities in conjunction with world leading researchers and institutes in the Russian Federation. This association will contribute to value add the existing Bamburgh Marrsh bio-defense applications and initiatives.
The ISTC Program (http://www.istc.ru) s part of a US Department of State program whose objective it is to support nonproliferation in the area of nuclear, biological and chemical Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) by providing assistance in establishing sustainable non-weapon related jobs for the scientists and engineers in the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union who possess current or prior, direct or indirect WMD experience. The ISTC program is funded mainly by the U.S., European Union, and Japan.
Dr. Ed Stephen, head of MDM's biodefense division, is currently on a one-month undertaking in Russia, where he is conducting a series of meetings with various Institutes that include focus on the development of anthrax, smallpox and TB diagnostic and vaccine research.
The Company will provide further information to the market during the course of the transaction.

Troux Demos DoD Transformation Solution Components at CISA Worldwide Conference
Speeds IT Portfolio Management, Decision Support for Net-Centric Operations
Orlando, FL (PRWEB) May 10, 2005 -- Troux™ Technologies, the leader in Enterprise Architecture (EA) and transformation solutions, will demo the Troux DoDAF Planning Methodology™ and the DoDAF Capabilities Analysis Pad™ – both key components of its Department of Defense (DoD) Transformation Solution – this week at the Spring 2005 CISA Worldwide Conference May 10 to 12 at the Armed Forces Recreation Center ‘Shades of Green Resort’ in Orlando, Florida. The Troux DoDAF Planning Methodology and DoDAF Capabilities Analysis Pad both enable DoD organizations to speed the creation of Enterprise Architectures that support data-centric IT portfolio management and net-centric operations, key focuses of the unclassified Conference.
“These offerings begin to take the DoD Architecture Framework to the next level: to data-driven analysis, ease of use, and greater accessibility for wider audiences,” said Pat Motola, president and chief operating officer of Troux Technologies. “This is fundamental to enabling DoDAF to efficiently and effectively drive DoD investment and portfolio decisions according to the needs of the warfighter.”
DoDAF Planning Methodology
Troux’s DoDAF Planning Methodology provides a DoDAF Planning Model with embedded EA development plans, analysis and linkages to iteratively build the architecture and produce the required DoDAF products on a solid underlying object model.
The DoDAF Planning Model is a Metis visual model, one that comprises a model template optimized for EA planning and a standard Metis object repository, along with a complete project plan for implementing the DoDAF. “All of the mechanisms and processes in the metamodel are geared to speed the creation of an enterprise architecture that supports DoDAF, speeds implementation through automation, and enables data-centric portfolio management,” noted Motola.
DoDAF Capabilities Analysis Pad
The DoDAF Capabilities Analysis Pad provides an intuitive interface designed to increase ease of use, enable ad-hoc and canned analysis, and speed decision-making from DoDAF products and data. It includes the following key features for use by DoDAF architects, analysts and other decision-makers:
- DoDAF Product Views - A set of selected DoDAF product views easily accessed (for view or edit based upon role) and shown in context with the other products and the “big picture” architecture.
- DoDAF Configured Analysis - “Business-oriented” questions that answer common inquiries about the dependencies and relationships that exist in the underlying instance data.
- Ad-hoc Analysis - Interactive queries into the data and visual depictions of the results that allow a user to reach new insights from the data and act accordingly.
- Reporting - A Quick-access menu to provide easy view and generation of the desired product reports, properties, and relationships.
“Troux and our partners can help customers quickly implement the DoDAF, providing not only the product views as required, but also the deep visibility that stakeholders throughout the organization need to make better decisions,” said Motola. He noted that the Troux DoD Transformation Solution, including the Troux DoDAF Template 1.0, offers a vision for the future, one where architects have the power of analysis and automation without having to endure the burden of manually creating basic product visualization and report generation.
Pricing and Availability
The DoDAF Planning Methodology (including the DoDAF Planning Model) and the DoDAF Capabilities Analysis Pad will be available in June, 2005. Both products combine with the DoDAF 1.0 Template to comprise the Troux DoD Transformation Solution. Pricing will be available in May, 2005.

Defense Solutions to rebuild T-72 Tanks and Other Military Vehicles for the Iraqi Army
Defense Solutions announced today that it reached agreement with the Iraq Ministry of Defense to rebuild seventy-seven T-72 main battle tanks and other military vehicles for the Army of Iraq. Defense Solutions will refurbish the tanks in Hungary under a US State Department license before NATO takes possession and ships them to Iraq.
(PRWEB) May 9, 2005 -- Defense Solutions announced today that it reached agreement with the Iraq Ministry of Defense to rebuild seventy-seven T-72 main battle tanks and other military vehicles for the Army of Iraq. The T-72 tanks were donated to Iraq by the Government of Hungary. Defense Solutions will refurbish the tanks in Hungary under a US State Department license before NATO takes possession and ships them to Iraq.
The T-72s are the main combat power of a new Iraqi Armor Division being created with the assistance of the US Army.
The Soviet-designed T-72 remains one of the world’s best main battle tanks and is comparable to the original M-1 Abrams tank fielded to US forces beginning in 1980. The T-72s being provided to the Iraqi Army are the original model, have not been upgraded and are no match for the highly advanced Abrams M1A2 and the M1A2 SEP (System Enhancement Program) version used by the US Army.
The T-72s were deactivated by the Hungarian Army at the end of the Cold War and placed in long-term storage. Hungary, which became part of NATO in 1999, donated the tanks to Iraq with NATO approval.
Defense Solutions will refurbish the T-72 tanks to bring them to operational condition, test fire the main gun and other weapons systems, and conduct a cross county road test before releasing the equipment for shipment to Iraq. The contract is expected to take up to six months.
“When fielded, these tanks will help bring stability to Iraq, allow the Iraqi Army to assume more responsibility for its nation’s security and hasten the day when US forces can come home,” according to Defense Solutions’ CEO Tim Ringgold, himself a retired US Army colonel and former mechanized brigade commander.

MIL-C-22992, Class L Connectors Now Available From CDM Electronics
CDM Electronics, a leading distributor of commercial and military (MIL-SPEC) interconnect products, and premier provider of value-added contract manufacturing services, today announced the availability of Class L connectors from WPI for the heaviest electrical loads.
Turnersville, NJ (PRWEB) May 8, 2005 -- CDM Electronics, a leading distributor of commercial and military (MIL-SPEC) interconnect products, and premier provider of value-added contract manufacturing services, today announced the availability of Class L connectors from WPI for the heaviest electrical loads. Qualified per MIL-C-22992, MS90556, and MS90557, the Class L connector is the largest size cylindrical available, offering the greatest capacity. It boasts a current range of 40 to 200 amps, and conductor sizes ranging from 6 to 4/0.
Additionally, the QPL’d unit provides unparalleled performance and reliability in extreme environments while ensuring safety. The device is highly suitable for mission-critical applications in the aerospace industry, and throughout the defense industry including the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. This robust connector may also be confidently employed in such industrial applications as communication satellites and commercial aircraft.
The Class L connector is uniquely engineered to optimize safety. It offers an arc quenching design to safeguard users when connectors are separated under load, while its programmed coupling sequence makes sure grounding and neutral contacts engage before the power contacts. At unmating, the power circuits are broken before the ground or neutral circuits. A 5-key polarizing system is employed to preclude the mating of circuits with incompatible power characteristics (voltage, phase and frequency).
To promote the utmost in reliability, this standardized device’s insert arrangement specifies connector/cable combinations. Its double stub coupling threads facilitate easy cleaning, faster mating and minimal risk of cross threading. Rigorously tested in harsh environments, the unit’s design provides strategically placed grommets and seals to provide superior weather-tight connections. Left-hand accessory treads minimize the incidence of wire breakage and cable twisting, as well as protect the connector from unintentional disassembly.
Class Ls are offered in shell sizes 28, 32, 44, and 52, with current ratings of 40, 60, 100, and 200 amps respectively. Corresponding contact sizes are 6, 4, 1/0 and 4/0. The QPL’d device is engineered to facilitate straight-line accessory attachment to help prevent cable twisting or misalignment. The singularly durable connector is manufactured of high-strength aluminum, and features copper alloy, silver over nickel contacts.
Pricing for CDM’s Class L heavy-duty cylindrical connector starts at $260.00 each. Delivery is from stock. Contact the company for OEM configurations and cable assembly fabrication options.

Companies Accept Responsibility and Publicly Apologize to the Families of the January 8, 2003 Air Midwest Flight 5481 Crash in Charlotte, North Carolina
Pastor Douglas and Tereasa Shepherd, who lost their 18 year-old daughter, Christiana, in the crash, invited all the victims' families to attend today's event. The Shepherd family, their attorneys and approximately six other families gathered at the memorial crash site this morning to witness the public apology by Air Midwest and its maintenance company, Vertex Aerospace.
Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) May 6, 2005 -- The last family to settle a wrongful death claim stemming from the Air Midwest crash of January 8, 2003 at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport demanded as part of their settlement terms that those responsible for the crash hold themselves accountable and publicly apologize to the victims' families.
Pastor Douglas and Tereasa Shepherd, who lost their 18 year-old daughter, Christiana, in the crash, invited all the victims' families to attend today's event. The Shepherd family, their attorneys and approximately six other families gathered at the memorial crash site this morning to witness the public apology by Air Midwest and its maintenance company, Vertex Aerospace (now known as L-3 Communications Aerotech). The prepared statement read by Greg Stephens, President of Air Midwest stated:
"We are here today to remember the victims of Flight 5481 and to offer our apologies, condolences and sincere sympathy to the surviving family members of the passengers and crew who perished in the January 8, 2003 crash of Air Midwest Flight Number 5481. We are deeply saddened by your loss. The National Transportation Safety Board's investigation disclosed errors which caused and contributed to this tragic accident. We participated fully with the NTSB in its investigation and understand our roles leading up to the crash. Air Midwest and its maintenance provider, Vertex, acknowledge deficiencies, which together with the wording of the aircraft maintenance manuals, contributed to this accident. This tragedy has caused us to investigate rigorously our policies and guidelines regarding aircraft maintenance, operation and safety in general. We have taken substantial measures to prevent similar accidents and incidents in the future, so that your losses will not have been suffered in vain. We have also implemented or are implementing the applicable NTSB safety recommendations following this accident. We are truly sorry, and regret and apologize to everyone affected by this tragic event."
Christiana Shepherd, an Interior Design major, was returning to school after a Christmas break with her parents when Flight 5481 crashed. She is survived by her parents and four siblings, Amanda, Juliana, Stephen, and Andrew.
The Shepherds' attorneys, Baum Hedlund, also represented the surviving family of another Air Midwest victim, Keith Coyner, a GNC Vice President.
The lawsuits filed by Baum Hedlund alleged that the Beech 1900-D was improperly loaded and experienced acute problems with its flight controls due to a disastrously rigged elevator pitch control system. This caused the airplane to rise straight up right after take-off, stall and crash, killing 21 people on board.
The Shepherds' case was the last to resolve. Although a substantial monetary settlement was also involved, the Shepherds' primary focus had been to require accountability by the defendants, either by trial or by public apology, for the operation, maintenance and design deficiencies that caused the aircrash. A trial was avoided as a result of today's public apology by Air Midwest and Vertex.
Baum Hedlund's lead negotiator and trial counsel for this settlement was aviation attorney Ronald L. M. Goldman (former Judge Pro Tem, arbitrator, mediator and adjunct aviation accident law professor). Other members of Baum Hedlund's aviation team that represented the Shepherd and Coyner families, John Greaves (a former airline captain), Paul Hedlund and Michael Baum, also attended today's ceremony.
"We are pleased to be hearing this apology. We wish to thank the attorneys and staff at Baum Hedlund for sharing our goal and working diligently to see it advanced in this way today. Our goal is to strengthen commercial airline safety, in part by holding airlines accountable for their actions and encouraging them to remedy their mistakes to avoid future tragedy. We would also like to see the FAA play a more active role in the oversight and regulation of outsourced maintenance. The loss of a child, sibling, spouse or parent is devastating to any family; all that can be done to avoid such loss should and must be done. The bottom line must always be people, not profit," Pastor Douglas and Tereasa Shepherd stated.
"Pastor Douglas and Tereasa Shepherd had the fortitude, tenacity and courage to allow us to press their case. We were able to accomplish their primary demand of requiring airline and maintenance company public acceptance of accountability accompanied by their pledge to work more rigorously to ensure the safety of airline passengers. It is most gratifying that we have been able to achieve their goals," attorney Ronald Goldman stated.
Baum Hedlund has represented clients in more than 50 airline crashes over the last 20 years, including membership on the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee and Trial Team for the 1994 Charlotte crash of US Airways Flight 1016; they also currently serve on the Plaintiffs' Executive Committee for the 9/11 Aircrash Litigation.
Television footage of the apology can be obtained by calling Bonnie Rosen at WCNC NBC Charlotte at 704-358-5532.

IntelliJET Design Incorporates Continuously Variable Power Transmission (CVT) for Boats and Ships
IntelliJET Marine, Inc. has commenced fabrication of an advanced version of its variable geometry jet drive incorporating a continuously variable power transmission (CVT), now becoming the standard in automobiles.<\I>
Redmond, WA (PRWEB) May 5, 2005 -- IntelliJet Marine, Inc. is making rapid progress in the development of marine propulsion technology acquired from Marine Jet Technology Corp in January of this year.
The company has commenced fabrication of an advanced version of its variable geometry jet drive incorporating a continuously variable power transmission (CVT), now becoming the standard in automobiles. “Existing marine jets utilize a fixed drive system that hasn’t been seen in automobiles since the Model T,” says Jeff Jordan, President of IntelliJet Marine, Inc. “The IntelliJET is naturally expected to enhance fuel economy and engine life in boats, just as transmissions have in automobiles.”
The company believes that this system’s superior performance will answer the strong expressed desire from consumers for greater reliability and economical operation in boats. “We expect this technology to offer manufacturers the opportunity to reduce their product liability insurance without sacrificing performance,” Jordan says, “which should provide motivation on that end, and ease the acceptance of the IntelliJET in the recreational boating industry.”
Management has also found strong interest for military, homeland security, and commercial applications. The Intellijet technology is under consideration by a prominent marine architecture firm for inclusion in several military craft. Jordan has been selected to present this technology at MACC, the Multi-Agency Craft Conference sponsored by the US Navy this month in Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Jordan has also been accepted as a presenter at the 2005 High Speed Ship and Craft Symposium sponsored by the American Society of Naval Engineers in Everett, Washington on July 19 and 20.
About IntelliJet Marine, Inc.

2005 Fall SIW Call for Papers
You are invited to participate in the 2005 Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop (SIW). The SIW is a semiannual event encompassing a broad range of model and simulation issues, applications, and communities, with the overall goal of identifying and supporting the development of products to facilitate simulation interoperability standards and reuse.
(PRWEB) May 5, 2005 -- You are invited to participate in the 2005 Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop (SIW). The SIW is a semiannual event encompassing a broad range of model and simulation issues, applications, and communities, with the overall goal of identifying and supporting the development of products to facilitate simulation interoperability standards and reuse.
The SIW includes a several working sessions addressing interoperability and reuse requirements and issues; tutorials on state-of-the-art methodologies, tools, and techniques; and exhibits presenting the latest technological advances.
The focus of the 2005 Fall SIW is the Use of Game Technology in Military Modeling and Simulation. Defense departments worldwide are turning to game technologies such as scenario-based game engines and on-line massively multi-player roleplaying game servers as one way of providing low-cost, on demand, deployable tactical training to the warfighter. In addition, game and entertainment technologies such as crowd behavior modeling are being embedded into traditional military trainers. While defense departments value and mandate standards in military programs, does the game industry have the commitment, incentive, and experience to apply simulation standards to ensure validity of training and to enable communications, commonality, and reuse between different vendors` games?
Games and game technologies are proliferating in military training. Are they reusable, interoperable, and maintainable? If not, should they be? Must the military community create its game technologies from a blank sheet? Or can we devise economically efficient methods to reuse commercial games without falling victim to common problems such as how to gain access to proprietary code and how to interpret the game results for analytic purposes?
Full details of the 2005 Fall SIW can be found at www.sisostds.org. Abstracts are due May 9th 2005.

Electrophysics® Awarded Contract For Seven High Performance Infrared Cameras By Naval Air Warfare Center (NAVAIR) Weapons Division, China Lake
Emerald InSb based IR cameras to be integrated into MANPAD (Man Portable Air Defense) Program.
Fairfield, NJ (PRWEB) May 4, 2005 -- Electrophysics, a leader in infrared imaging solutions, is pleased to announce that it has recently been awarded a contract by NAVAIR Weapons Division, China Lake, for a total of seven Emerald MWIR-InSb infrared cameras. The cameras will be integrated into NAVAIR’s MANPAD program, designed specifically for force protection.
NAVAIR, a military leader in the research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) of guided missiles, advanced weapons, and weapon systems, provides the operating forces of the Navy and Marine Corps, other activities of the U.S. Armed Forces, and foreign allies with effective and affordable integrated warfare systems and life-cycle support to ensure battlespace dominance. NAVAIR features several locations across the United States and employs nearly 32,000 military and civilian employees, manages approximately 150 acquisition programs and maintains over 4,100 aircraft in active inventory, including 96 individual type/model/series.
By arranging the cameras in a circumference, NAVAIR will create a highly advanced measure of force protection from MANPAD systems. With the use of special stitching software, each camera will be used to produce a 360° Field of View capable of detecting the infrared signatures of shoulder fired missiles and small arms fire, the most common forms of MANPAD. Upon detection, the information would immediately data linked to deployed aircraft which can execute appropriate countermeasures.
Each Emerald features a large format 640x512 focal plane array, is responsive in the 3-5 µm wavelength “midwave” band and exhibits a typical NETD figure of less than 20mK, which allows users to detect minute temperature differences at great distances. The Emerald MWIR also incorporates a 14 bid digital output which will be directly interfaced into a custom software program. In addition, the Emerald’s compact one-piece design improves the overall portability of the system.

New Oscilloscope Provides Sophisticated Features – Without the Price Tag
The growing need for a high-bandwidth, full-featured oscilloscope - without the premium price – is intensifying for advanced, high-speed electronics testing
(PRWEB via PR Web Direct) May 3, 2005 -- With advances in high-speed digital circuitry, many engineers require a powerful digital oscilloscope that can perform a variety of test and measurement functions including multi-channel operations at high acquisition speeds, scalable memory settings (without sacrificing speed), and real-time waveform persistence that offers insight into waveform behavior over time.
Unfortunately, a digital oscilloscope with this array of features often comes with a prohibitive price tag. As a result, engineers are forced to cope with outdated and underpowered equipment, which can result in serious setbacks in R&D, quality control, delivery schedules and customer satisfaction.
With this in mind, Yokogawa, an innovator in test and measurement equipment, is offering its signalXplorer DL9000 Series of high-bandwidth, high-speed digital oscilloscopes – without the premium price tag. Features include 1 and 1.5 GHz bandwidth with four analog channels; scalable memory that maintains high-speed acquisition; and real-time statistical representation of waveforms. The series includes a high-definition 8.4” LCD, memory purge, the ability to save up to 2000 waveforms into history memory, along with advanced display capabilities.
The DL9000 series starts at $10,995, a considerable value compared to high-performance oscilloscopes that have less memory yet are 25-65% more expensive.
High-speed waveform acquisition is provided by two main components: The A/D conversion section includes cascade-type 2.5 GS/s 8-bit converters that are run in parallel and designed for low power consumption. The signal processing circuits generate display data and also perform high-speed waveform and parameter calculations.
Unlike oscilloscopes that offer fast acquisition modes but place limits on the amount of memory used in such modes, the DL9000 Series allows engineers to choose as much memory as necessary for a given measurement.
The series provides four-channel, parallel signal processing for board-level testing via a proprietary Advanced Data Stream Engine (ASDE). As such, the DL9000 can perform 9,000 acquisitions/sec/channel @ 12.k word memory using one or more channels; with all four channels this is equivalent to 450 million points/sec.
Thousands of waveforms per channel can be simultaneously displayed through a new waveform accumulation system. This function utilizes the History memory of the oscilloscope to provide valuable insight into occurrences on other channels during an anomaly, along with the ability to replay or manually step through acquisitions to find the cause.
The images displayed through accumulation on the oscilloscope can be viewed in multi-color or single-color-multi-intensity modes, where the color or intensity changes based on the frequency of waveform events. These images provide visual information about waveform behavior over time, similar to older analog models.

WWII Women Welders and Veterans Featured in Book, “Don’t Call Me Rosie, The Women who Welded the LSTs and the Men who Sailed on Them”
The U.S. Department of Defense has designated several cities for regional ceremonies to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II this year. The design and construction of the LST played a significant part in winning the war. The book, “Don’t Call Me Rosie”, shares the stories of women who welded the LSTs and the men who sailed on them.
(PRWEB) May 3, 2005 -- “If these vessels are produced in the time required, the war will be one year shorter than it will be if we fail.” - Rear Admiral Samuel Robinson to Dravo Corp. Chairman John Berg and Dravo Corp. President Vere Edwards, January 8, 1942.
The vessels Rear Admiral Robinson was referring to were the Landing Ship, Tanks or LSTs. They were built in the time required and we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II this year instead of in 2006. The surrender of Germany was on May 8, 1945 and the surrender of Japan was on August 15, 1945.
It was the women who went to the shipyards during World War II and learned how to weld that made it possible to produce the LSTs in the time required. The LST was a new type of ship specifically designed to land on the beaches of Africa and Europe. After the British evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940, Winston Churchill recognized the need for the ship that became known as the LST.
Inspired by her mother and two aunts who worked as welders at Dravo, Neville Island in Pittsburgh, Kathleen Thomas has collected the stories, remembered 60 years later, of the women welders who built the LSTs and the men who sailed on them. Their stories are in the book, “Don’t Call Me Rosie, the Women who Welded the LSTs and the Men who Sailed on Them.”
In addition to her mother’s and aunts’ stories, the book includes the stories of women welders who worked in the shipyards in Pittsburgh; Evansville; Hingham; Jeffersonville; Seneca; Vancouver, WA; and Portland, OR.
Interwoven with the stories of women in a specific shipyard are stories of men who served on LSTs from that specific shipyard. The men's stories include eyewitness accounts of Pearl Harbor, Exercise Tiger, the West Loch tragedy, Leyte, and kamikaze attacks. Although most of the stories are about World War II, one chapter includes the stories from three men who served in the Korean War.
Lester Parker, of LST 743 built at Dravo, commented after reading this book, “Yours is the best book I have seen on LST’s. It covers more ground, and gives the reader the best possible insight into just what this ship, the civilians who built it, the sailors who sailed it, and the thousands of troops who were carried aboard, all benefited from the dedicated efforts of each other.”
Hichael Nedeff, of LST 610 and a crewmember of LST 325 when it was brought back to the U.S. from Greece, wrote, "Your book is just great. It covers those turbulent times of good and bad memories in the lives of men and women."
To order a copy of the book, “Don’t Call Me Rosie, the Women who Welded the LSTs and the Men who Sailed on Them,” send a check for $15.00 payable to Thomas/Wright, Inc., 7190 SW Fir Loop, Tigard, OR 97223. A book order form can be downloaded from the website:
