QuantumSphere, Inc. Achieves Milestone With High-Quality Nano-Nickel/Cobalt Alloy For Replacement Solution in Multi-Billion Dollar Platinum Electrode Market

QuantumSphere, Inc. announced it has a clear replacement solution for the platinum electrode market. Independent validation regarding this development poses a serious issue for platinum suppliers in the platinum group metal catalyst market-- while presenting tremendous business and cost savings advantages for companies.

COSTA MESA, CA (PRWEB) August 31, 2005 –- QuantumSphere, Inc., the leading manufacturer of metallic nanopowders for applications in aerospace, defense, energy and other markets demanding advanced material applications, announced (“QSI- nano™ Ni/Co alloy”) as a clear replacement solution for the platinum electrode market. QuantumSphere is the only supplier of the world’s highest quality metallic nanomaterials including QSI- nano™ Ni/Co and other proprietary alloys. Independent validation, provided by DoppStein Enterprises, Inc. (DSE) regarding this development, poses a serious issue for platinum suppliers in the platinum group metal catalyst market, as QSI- nano™ Ni/Co alloy will alleviate dependency on platinum as the main catalytic material in a variety of battery and fuel cell applications-- while presenting tremendous business and cost savings advantages for companies.

A shift from finely divided platinum to QSI- nano™ Ni/Co alloy results in a reduction in the cost of fuel cell and battery catalysts by approximately 50%, while achieving up to 90% of pure platinum performance, based on current prices. Conversely, a 90% cost savings will result in a remarkable 73% performance relative to pure platinum. To view independent scientific data from DSE that supports and validates QuantumSphere’s achievement in the catalyst marketplace, visit http://www.qsinano.com/products.html and click on “DSE nano-Nickel/Cobalt Validation Data.”

“By adopting our product, QuantumSphere enables companies to provide new product offerings in the marketplace and increase their revenue,” said Kevin Maloney, CEO, QuantumSphere, Inc. “For example, we have spoken with many firms that are frustrated by the fact that products using small fuel cells or batteries face a problem-- up to 40% of the total product cost is derived from the expense of the catalyst. By using our QSI- nano™ Ni/Co alloy product, QuantumSphere can reduce the total device cost significantly. This opens up an exciting range of new business opportunities for companies that want to offer new products to customers but were previously hindered by the cost that platinum imposed on the OEM and final product price. Additionally, the method of making these materials is highly scalable and fully automated. QSI- nano™ Ni/Co alloy will liberate companies from their dependence on platinum, lower the cost of production and increase profit margins, enabling firms to offer new products at a price point that will be accepted in the market,” Maloney added.

DoppStein Enterprises, Inc., conducted experiments and provided independent scientific data to validate QuantumSphere’s achievement. “After months of working to evaluate and validate QuantumSphere’s product and manufacturing capabilities, I can finally state with full confidence that oxygen reduction catalysis on cathode electrodes using QuantumSphere’s nano-sized nickel/cobalt alloy material has been unambiguously demonstrated,” said Robert Dopp, President, DSE. “This catalyst can be used in a variety of practical batteries and fuel cells, including Li-ion, Zn/air, PEMFC and DMFC. One fundamental issue of fuel cells is the reliance on platinum as catalyst. For a cost comparison, finely divided platinum (currently $75.00/gram in bulk) costs approximately 5 times as much as QuantumSphere’s nano-Ni/Co alloy catalyst (currently $15.00/gram). This translates into a large reduction in total device cost. Implementation of this new technology incorporating QSI-nano™ Ni/Co alloy in the alternative energy sector has the potential to dramatically accelerate commercialization of these micro devices,” Dopp added.

Confirmation of catalysis was accomplished through a series of experiments where nanocatalysts were used alone and in conjunction with varying amounts of platinum. “Not only are QuantumSphere’s catalysts active alone, they also enhance the activity of platinum when combined with various QSI-Nano™ materials. Compared with a pure platinum catalyzed cathode, QuantumSphere’s metallic nanoparticles show up to 90% of the catalytic activity,” Dopp commented. “The activity was demonstrated using electrochemical techniques and impedance spectroscopy. This was the first clear verification and will be followed by a series of optimization experiments that are targeted at meeting or exceeding the activity of high surface area platinum catalyzed cathodes. The impact of these findings is enormous, as it reveals that nanocatalysts prepared by QuantumSphere’s proprietary methods have the potential to partially or fully replace platinum (a $10-$12 billion market, annually), one of the most expensive and scarce electrode components,” Dopp concluded. White papers will be released in Q1, 2006.

September 11th Realities Are Revealed in San Diego Premiere

"9/11 Mysteries: Legend or Logic?", a multimedia presentation by The 9/11 Roadies, connects the hows, whys and wherefores of the September 11th picture. Premiering in San Diego California on September 11th, 2005.

(PRWEB) August 31, 2005 -- "9/11 Mysteries: Legend or Logic?", an entertaining 2-hour audiovisual presentation by The 9/11 Roadies (Brad and Sofia), has just completed a successful 6-week run in a Hollywood theatre, and is now poised to rock San Diego with what many have called "the most powerful presentation of 9/11 evidence ever made."

The San Diego premier will be on September 11th, 2005 at 7 p.m. at the
Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oak Crest Park Drive (corner Balour/Encinitas Boulevard). Admission, $15, includes a color program and a free copy of the bestselling DVD "Loose Change", a 9/11 documentary by Dylan Avery.

"9/11 Mysteries" presents photographic and video evidence drawn from over 3000 websites and 10 current documentaries, allowing viewers to create perspective and form conclusions by themselves. Without pointing fingers or making allegations, the show suggests that something is very wrong with the story we have heard so far.

A "Second Wave" of interest is now surging through America around the huge number of unanswered questions of 9/11. The "First Wave" were the original skeptics, who wasted no time creating books, videos and websites, but had a limited audience due to national shock and horror in the wake of the event.

The 9/11 Roadies and their audience are the "Second Wave," those who have only now begun to ponder the plausibility of what could have and could not have happened that day. The size of the Second Wave is rapidly growing.

Whenever the presenters are interviewed on radio stations, calls and interest flood in for more information on the topic many say "changed the world forever," but little is known about what really happened that day.

As can be seen by the energetic response to Eric Hufschmid's "Painful Deceptions" (screened August 13 in San Diego with standing-room-only turnout), the public is primed for more on 9/11. Perfect timing for a non-partisan live presentation on the big-picture view of how a mere two hours of real-world theater became the critical launch pad for a long-planned global recipe!

The show contains four segments. "Demolitions" reveals what the Roadies call "woops footage" from major news networks. Much of the video aired that morning by the media giants was never aired again. While shots of the plane strike were shown repeatedly to millions, the building collapses were not. Slowed down and analyzed, the collapses are the key.

"Hijackers & Planes" reveals anomalies about the destruction to the Pentagon, the Arab terrorists, the wandering planes, and the passenger cell-phone calls, leading into the question of why Air Force scramblers failed to intercede within minutes as standard operating procedure mandates. "War Games" covers the numerous military drills in force that day.

"Who Benefits" discusses the stock trades, the government's expanding geopolitical program, military as industry and the birth of the warfare state, connecting all the dots with clips from documentaries and the news.

Why live presentations? Probably because as far as this subject is concerned, the newsrooms are closed, however, new information about the 9/11 attacks is becoming available weekly, and attendees will be shocked at how much information they have not seen in the major media.

A reviewer for Backstage West in LA said: "If your acquaintance with the event is limited to what aired that day and the mainstream follow-up, a great deal of this may be quite surprising. Even if you tend toward lefty crankiness, the discussion of the physics of building demolition and the structural integrity of steel frames is an eye opener."

New Software Provides Plant Engineering and Facility Management Groups a Robust Paperless Inspection and Reporting Solution

Comprehensive, yet intuitive software provides an industrial grade replacement to traditional paper based inspection systems.

Hayward, Calif. (PRWEB) August 30, 2005 --Vorpalware, a software development group focused on mobility solutions for business, today announced the release of the PlantLog software solution, which provides a complete end to end paperless inspection and reporting tool for accurately collecting and analyzing equipment status readings and other facility observations.

The PlantLog solution aims to dramatically improve efficiency by reducing the time needed to perform inspections and the administrative work of archiving, retrieving and compiling collected logs as well as providing a simplistic yet insightful means of visually trending data to assist with critical decision making for maintenance and process improvement.

“The emergence of the global economy and a trend of operational budget reductions has been putting pressure on facility managers to identify areas that could be modified in order to obtain greater optimization and efficiency” said Jim Duffy, President and Founder of Vorpalware. “While a standard paper based inspection system satisfies the need of taking actual readings, it does little to ensure the data is complete and accurate and provides no means of analyzing historical data to locate potential bottlenecks, redundancies or other areas that could be enhanced by altering its process.”

Groups can now replace traditional paper and hand written inspection systems by using rugged barcode enabled PDA’s that identify equipment and present the operator with a list of readings to take in a clear and concise manner while ensuring readings are taken within normal operational thresholds. Engineers can then view a component’s complete history with just a few mouse clicks, filter the inspections by a given date range, generate graphical charts and reports or export the data as a standard spreadsheet for sharing with external parties or regulatory agencies.

“We have been a part of the Vorpalware pilot program for over a year now and have found it to be a compelling alternative to our archaic paper based setup.” Said Neal Pearson, Engineering Manager at the Children’s Hospital of Central California. “The ability to trend recorded metrics provides us with valuable insight into our current and future plant conditions while the ability to assemble logs has significantly reduced administrative time in preparing JCAHO report submissions.”

The PlantLog product includes the following capabilities:

* Automatic equipment identification through barcode labels scanned from PDA
* Date, time and operators name are automatically attached to each inspection record
* Optional notes can be entered for each inspection.
* Warnings alert operator when a reading was taken outside of optimal ranges.
* Readings outside of optimal ranges are automatically displayed in red when viewing historical data
* User permissions feature to designate who can edit the inspection dataset, view historical data or perform actual inspections.
* Networked environment to allow multiple users to view inspection data
* Print out historical inspection data or export to Microsoft Excel
* Filter historical data by any given date range
* Create and memorize graphical charts for data analysis
* Quickly find all instances of a given value for an individual reading

Vorpalware provides PlantLog as a complete turn key solution that includes all PDA hardware, barcode labels, software and installation support. No other external dependences are required including database servers and reporting tools, which are integrated in the PlantLog software.

Pricing and Availability:
The PlantLog solution is immediately available direct from Vorpalware and is licensed on a ‘per site’ basis. Licenses are $5,695 for commercial users and $4,556 for non profit and government entities, plus the cost of PDA terminals at ~$800 each.
Multi license discounts are available as well as an evaluation package by request.

American School of Gas Measurement Technology Gets a New Logo in Celebration of 40 Years of Industry Service

Association Publishers develops a new logo for the American School of Gas Measurement Technology.

Houston, Texas (PRWEB via PressReleaseHelp) August 24, 2005 -- Commemorating 40 Years of Gas Industry Training, the American School of Gas Measurement Technology recently unveiled a new logo. The school, scheduled for September 19th – 22nd, 2005 at the Marriott Westchase Hotel in Houston, Texas, is busily preparing the 135 distinct classes and hands-on training involving everything from basic measurement theory to current topics that include: the Fundamentals of LNG, Importance of Hydrocarbon Dew Points, and Ethernet Radio Communications.

Created by Association Publishers, the logo is designed to simplify and contemporize the ASGMT branding in the natural gas industry. Lyle Johnson, Creative Director for Association Publishers, stated that the "ASGMT logo is the result of many man-hours of creative development which included 32 distinct creative design paths." The logo chosen for the school incorporates a simplified character set with an integrated Natural Gas Flame to represent the industry the ASGMT serves.

Out of this one design 4 different variations were developed to allow the school to use their new logo with or with out the "Anniversary" banner and with or without the supporting text. In this way the ASGMT can easily use the logo on letterhead, brochures, promotional specialties and supporting collateral.

Rusty Woomer, the 2005 General Chairman, stated "The new ASGMT logo not only marks our 40th anniversary but also reflects upon our past and future. The ASGMT long recognized that there was a real need for regular educational schools for those engaged in the field of gas measurement and related disciplines. Like the preverbal three-legged stool, ASGMT stands on an educational stool whose legs are classes, lectures and hands-on, exhibits, and plant tours. While we continuously refine the elements of the school, the principal tenet, which is education, has remained unchanged and will continue to remain unchanged. This new logo seeks to reflect our commitment to natural gas industry and training."

Mark Slusher, General Manager for Association Publishers commented, "We're excited to be a part of this important milestone in the ASGMT history. The school which started in 1966, has continued to grow and evolve over the years primarily due to its easy international access for Latin American attendees and the General Committee's drive to constantly evaluate and improve the educational mix of the school."

Drawing approximately 1000 attendees annually, the ASGMT serves as one of the largest not-for-profit training schools in the natural gas industry. Held at the Marriott Westchase Hotel, in Houston, Texas, the school is scheduled for September 19th – 22nd, 2005. Considering the pre-registration fee for the 2005 school is only $95 USD, the ASGMT is an excellent training value.

To learn how you can attend the ASGMT, register via the web at www.asgmt.com, or via the following: The American School of Gas Measurement Technology, PO Box 3991, Houston, Texas 77253-3991.

Rhythm Of Honor Brings Moments Of Decision

Anti-war reviewer supports music campaign for Vets and active service persons. The new troop-support campaign via music and an online community brings out mixed emotions.

Bastrop, LA (PRWEB) August 17, 2005 -- My take on the "Rhythm of Honor" CD project by Goodnight Kiss Music brought forth an incredible number of thoughts and emotions.

Going into this, it's a must to understand that I am a die hard antiwar person. I don't care if it's "us or them," the bottom line to me is people die....blood runs free. After a few years now in Iraq, in all honesty, I didn't believe anyone about noble motives for being there -- the numbers of dead and wounded are staggering and of course, heartbreaking.

Being a long time friend, supporter and partner with Goodnight Kiss Music, I did give this CD a break. After all, GNK is the music foundation that brought us the 'Addictions: Highs and Lows' CD, on which I personally worked and I found zero amount of commercialism over cause -- the CD addressed the issue of addictions, nothing more, nothing less -- not even money.

I was even more intrigued when I learned my baby sister was to perform a song on the Rhythm CD! So, I decided I'd better get with it on this one. So many CDs and projects, so full of money grabbing. "Rhythm of Honor" is not one of those. The CD was even launched with a free song download just for sharing the music that supports the cause in the "Pass It On" campaign. The free download is here:http://tinyurl.com/a4tvz

Reb Robinson was chosen to be the 'Pass it On Lady,' and believe me, she has a great song with 'Soldier's Daughter.' She is also, as it turns out, one very sweet person. Her voice gives her away as an all around wonderfully talented woman. Of course, the song she performs fits like a glove; if there ever was a song made for a voice, it's Reb and 'Soldier's Daughter.'

The owner of Goodnight Kiss, Ms. Janet Fisher, is one of my favorite persons, not to mention a long time ally and ... well, I can't say enough -- she is a super great lady who wears her emotions on the outside. This quality is has helped many a person, especially me. Her artistic production and incredible talent for selecting songs is stamped all over "Rhythm Of Honor," and each song is an entity unto itself in genre, style and content.

My original main concern when reviewing and obviously endorsing this CD was the politics involved. Hate to say it, but the color of money, green, many times outweighs the color of blood, red.

There are no politics here. None. This CD is about soldiers, fighting men and women who believe in what they are doing, which is protecting their families, our families and America. This is a record about individuals.

The CD helps and supports the 'Wounded Warrior Foundation' also, currently run from Fallujah by Colonel John Folsom. I mentioned the 'Addiction' CD; we all worked hard on that CD and it's still
going. After working with Janet on that CD a while I realized -- "hey, there's something here more valuable than the price of a compact disc; lives were at stake."

When that concept finally sunk in, I knew we were on a quest for something much more valuable that the price of the CD, we were helping people and families. I see the exact scene being replayed here. No one is getting rich off 'Rhythm of Honor,' we are once again helping people -- we are helping people that are protecting us, so ironic, isn't it? Yet, at minimum, fitting.

Please support this CD. I was absolutely in tears when I met with a local family who lost a son. I cannot explain what it did to me, except it turned me inside out and I cannot fathom what it did to the actual family. As I write this, tears form and I think of the songs, from sadness to the macho guys who push on.....they will tell you real quick -- it's for their fallen comrades and all the reason mentioned above.

Whatever goes on in the White House or on Capitol Hill, this CD is not about them, it's about the true American Heroes; the sons and daughters of America.

Visionary Leader in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Joins SENTEL Corp.; Air Force Reserve Veteran and Legion of Merit Recipient Will Bolster SENTEL’s Growing UAV Program

SENTEL Corp., a premier engineering and software company, has hired retired Air Force Reserve Col. Janice Manijak Morrow – the 2004 AUVSI Al Aube Outstanding Contributor Award recipient and a Legion of Merit honoree – as its director of strategic initiatives.

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) August 18, 2005 -- SENTEL Corp., a premier engineering and software company, has hired retired Air Force Reserve Col. Janice Manijak Morrow – the 2004 AUVSI Al Aube Outstanding Contributor Award recipient and a Legion of Merit honoree – as its director of strategic initiatives.

Morrow received the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) Al Aube Award for demonstrating the spirit and intent of its mission in an extraordinary manner. She orchestrated one of the most dynamic changes in the Air Force – the recognition of small unmanned systems and the integration of their role into the Air Force mission. In 2004, the Air Force acknowledged her UAV proposal and signed a memorandum designating Air Force Special Operations Command as lead command for all small UAVs in the service.

Morrow received the Legion of Merit Medal for her “visionary leadership” as chief of the Air Force's Special Management Office for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. Her “superb guidance and leadership were directly responsible for defining the command's future, improving Air Force operations capabilities worldwide and arming battlefield airmen to fight the war against terrorism,” according to the citation. The Legion of Merit is awarded for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.

“Col. Morrow brings an exceptional level of expertise and vision to our team at SENTEL,” said James F. Garrett, president of SENTEL. “Her leadership and experience in developing small unmanned systems requirements, as well as acquiring small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for the Air Force will help lead SENTEL into new strategic areas. She brings a keen know-how that is unparalleled in this field and will be a priceless asset to our clients in their long-term strategies.”

Morrow will build core expertise in strategic planning and launch a new division specializing in various capability aspects of unmanned systems for SENTEL, a wholly owned subsidiary of Dimensions International Inc. She will develop new strategic areas for the Alexandria-based company to expand its capabilities in unmanned systems and the expertise it offers its clients, including those in the federal government – such as the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security – and the private sector.

Morrow has more than 22 years of experience in support of the DOD, homeland defense, strategic and contingency planning, operations, research and analysis.

Morrow's new division at SENTEL will provide integration and engineering services to customers, including DOD and private industry. That work includes building roadmaps, performing assessments and tackling key challenges confronting unmanned systems employment and operations.

“Some of the biggest unmanned systems challenges in a global sense involve interoperability, bandwidth requirements, frequency allocation and management, interference, airspace management and de-confliction, as well as operator qualifications,” Morrow said. “It's important we swiftly resolve these challenges so our operators can fully reap the benefits these capabilities bring to the fight.”

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles has grown exponentially since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the war on terrorism. “It's the present and the future,” Garrett said. “SENTEL has been a leader in exploring the capabilities of this revolutionary industry. Col. Morrow's expertise will help us develop even more solutions in this growing field.”

On the battlefield, UAVs provide real-time data to forces, limit casualties and increase situational awareness data, information and intelligence.

“UAVs are geared for missions that are dull, dirty and dangerous,” Morrow said. “Before we send in our troops, they can survey an area and check it out for hostile forces or weaponry. UAVs provide a constant vigil over our forces and battle damage assessments. The key is our forces having accessibility to these capabilities and sound integration into the campaign. UAVs not only increase mission success but also help bring our troops home safely from the war zone.”

The commercial market is also exploring more uses for unmanned systems, in such areas as crop dusting, mapping and surveying areas and in communication relays.

“I chose SENTEL because I saw this company as the best, most primary instrument to give solutions back to our operators, overall military operations and the war on terrorism,” Morrow said. “SENTEL is attacking all the Achilles' heels that are confronting our military operations and providing innovative solutions to the commercial market as well.”

Before joining SENTEL, Morrow worked as a research associate for unmanned capabilities at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition Inc., one of the nation's premier institutes focusing on topics related to cognition in humans and machines.

Previously, she headed long-term strategic management of plans, programs and policy at the Air Force Special Operations Command in Hurlburt Field, FL. She was the Air Force lead officer for all small unmanned solutions, and her expertise on UAVs proved pivotal during war on terrorism special operations missions.

Morrow graduated cum laude from the University of Massachusetts with a bachelor's degree in education and received her commission from the Air Force ROTC Air Science program.

She is based in SENTEL's office at Fort Walton, FL, and will also work from its headquarters in Alexandria, VA.

Four Years After 9/11, Is An American Hiroshima Next?

The next post September 11 terrorist attacks on America orchestrated by Al-Qaeda are likely to involve the use of nuclear weapons, claims the author of a new book about a future 9/11 plot. Unless the threat is taken far more seriously, nuclear terrorism in America may be inevitable, resulting in massive loss of life that will make 9/11 appear insignificant in comparison.

(PRWEB) August 17, 2005 -- Sixty years after an American B-29 bomber dropped a uranium fission bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, and 4 years after Al-Qaeda’s September 11 terror attacks on New York City’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington, America may be on the verge of experiencing a Hiroshima of its own. Those are the views of the author of a recently published novel, KING OF BOMBS, which is based on a future act of nuclear terrorism occurring on American soil. Sheldon Filger, who was a resident of New York City during the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, believes that the next 9/11 may very well be a nuclear detonation in a large American city.

“The overwhelming impression I formed of 9/11 is that its perpetrators, Al-Qaeda, have a hate-driven determination to murder Americans in massive numbers, with the only restraint on their lust to kill being the technical means of destruction that are available to them,” Filger said. “If, God forbid, they were ever to acquire a nuclear weapon, I have no doubt that they will employ it, with the objective of creating a Hiroshima on American soil.”

KING OF BOMBS(www.kingofbombs.com) is a fictional account of a future 9/11 plot by Al-Qaeda involving a nuclear device of vast destructive power. The title of the book is the actual name of the most powerful nuclear weapon ever built, a relic of the Cold War built by the Soviet Union, with the destructive force of thousands of atomic bombs of the type that leveled the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the closing days of World War II. Experts who have examined the risks of nuclear terrorism have long speculated on the danger that Al-Qaeda and similar organizations could exploit the large amount of weapons grade nuclear material and many under-employed or out of work nuclear weapons experts left over from the former Soviet Union. Mr. Filger’s novel is based on such a scenario, in the process dramatizing the apocalyptic consequences posed by the threat of nuclear terrorism.

Commenting on the reasons why he wrote a novel about a future Al-Qaeda terrorist attack on America involving weapons of mass destruction, Sheldon Filger spoke about the imminent threat of nuclear terrorism being inflicted upon America. “As someone who lived through the horror of September 11, 2001, I like so many others who were in New York City on that fateful day have been waiting ever since for the other shoe to drop. Unfortunately, there is a disconnect, especially within the government, that has led to a dangerous complacency towards the acute danger confronting us. I hope my book might help shake things up, and stimulate public discourse on what I believe is the number one threat to human civilization, before it is too late.”

Filger mentioned that weapons grade nuclear materials are located throughout the world, frequently under poor security. A U.S. government program aimed at safeguarding such materials located in Russia will not be completed for another thirteen years, based on the current slow pace of implementation. “It takes only thirty-five pounds of highly enriched uranium, or as little as nine pounds of plutonium, to manufacture a simple but effective nuclear weapon, that could kill upwards of one million people in large urban areas within the United States. For the American government to treat this threat as being of such low priority that it can be dealt with on a time scale measured in decades, is to invite inevitable catastrophe. Unless our behavior towards the threat of nuclear terrorism is radically altered, it is only a matter of time before we all witness the next 9/11 attack in the form of a mushroom cloud,” Filger warned.

Porta-King has Solutions for Congested Ports

Multi-purpose buildings increase security and maximize limited space. As port traffic increases, ports have more needs for pre-assembled buildings. Their purposes keep expanding as they accommodate new security measures and technological equipment.

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) August 17, 2005 -- According to the American Association of Port Authorities, over the next 15 years the amount of cargo handled by U.S. ports will double to 4 billion tons per year, partly due to outsourcing. This challenges the maritime industry because ports are already understaffed and receive less than 10% funding from the Transportation Security Administration’s annual budget, despite the threat of maritime terrorism. As more employees and security equipment are needed, more buildings are required.

Although prefabricated buildings have been used at ports for a long time, their purposes keep expanding as they accommodate new security measures and technological equipment.

Gregg Pearlstone, Vice President at Porta-King (www.portaking.com), notes that assembled buildings are no longer just traditional guard booths but are complex and electronically-integrated security building systems.

“At Porta-King, we are constructing buildings that serve as freestanding data centers, security and truck checkpoints,” said Pearlstone.

According to Porta-King, many ports are adding state-of-the-art options to their buildings to make them more secure and technologically integrated. Popular features include ballistic rated construction, custom shelves and cabinets to house sophisticated security equipment, intercom systems, data ports or other specialized electronics. In addition, these custom designed units include climate control and can be equipped with pre-plumbed restrooms along with many other custom design features. Porta-King structures can also feature exterior lighting packages for increased security. Most guard buildings constructed for use at Ports or other operations located near the ocean will include roll-down shutters for protection against hurricane force winds.

As maritime traffic becomes even more congested, Pearlstone believes that Porta-King buildings are ideal because of their mobility and effective space management.

“Since American ports are so busy and have limited space, Porta-King buildings are necessary because they can easily be moved around ports. In addition, the prefabricated design enables immediate installation without the added disruptions to traffic flow associated with the construction required for a conventionally built security building,” said Pearlstone.

Porta-King has been a leader in custom-designed, pre-assembled buildings since 1969. In addition to its exterior pre-assembled buildings, Porta-King offers a full line of modular wall systems and enclosures including single and two-story designs, as well as structural steel mezzanines used for storage, production and elevated office space. Porta-King buildings provide shelter and storage solutions for virtually any working environment. For more informtion visit www.portaking.com.

The Filtration of Process Water and Its Importance in the Petroleum Industry, Section 4: How to Select the Right Filter and Reduce Your Waste Disposal Costs

The objective of any filter is not to remove all particulate from the fluid stream. The size of particulate to be removed should be determined by the quality objective or system protection requirements. Removing particulate below the level identified for a specific system is a costly and unnecessary exercise with little or no return on investment.

(PRWEB) August 16, 2005 -- Will the stream be reintroduced into the process? If so, what contaminate levels will yield cost effective efficiency? The residual level of solids in the product filtrate will vary for each application. Understanding the limitations that varying solids levels will impose on the process is essential to determine the cost benefits of filtration systems. It is important to utilize filtration expertise along with process knowledge to gain the most from a filtration system.

Protecting a process through filtration has many more variables to consider. A fundamental question is what size particle can cause erosion in downstream equipment. Another is at what level of solids will deposits build up in the low, slow flow areas.

Two other important factors to consider when designing or selecting a filtration system are environmental/safety concerns and waste disposal costs. Environmental regulations governing fugitive emissions have become much more stringent in recent decades, and will be even more rigorous in the future.

In the United States, ultra low sulfur diesel and gasoline fuel requirement become effective in 2004/2005. Companies are also faced with increasing worries over lawsuits from workers exposed to hazardous materials and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Waste disposal costs have risen dramatically in recent years, partially because of the stricter environmental regulations. The following discussion provides an overview or current technologies available for both disposable and cleanable filter systems.

The next article (section 5) will examine disposable and cleanable filter media, and what the differences are between the two.

MPS Goes Underground in the United Kingdom Lessons Learned on the Water, Put to Use on the Rails

The tragic attacks on London’s transport infrastructure on 7/7 and the failed attempts 2 weeks later heightened all of our most dreaded fears: “…who, what, when, where, why, and how…”!

Deerfield Beach Fla. (PRWEB) August 14, 2005 -- The tragic attacks on London’s transport infrastructure on 7/7 and the failed attempts 2 weeks later heightened all of our most dreaded fears: “…who, what, when, where, why, and how…”!

Memories raced immediately to Madrid… and, even more dramatically to Tokyo and that morning rush hour of March 20, 1995, when a group of terrorists placed containers of the nerve gas sarin in five cars on three of Tokyo's ten underground railway lines – a system that comprises 230 km of track and transports many million people daily.

Sarin containers were put in rail cars that were expected to arrive in one Central Tokyo station at approximately the same time... Within minutes, alarms were received from fifteen underground stations. Initially, fire or explosions were suspected, but victims’ symptoms soon indicated that a nerve agent (which was verified within a few hours by police chemical experts) had been dispersed. In total, some 5,000-6,000 persons were exposed: 3,227 taken to hospitals -- of which 493 were admitted; 17 developed severe symptoms requiring intensive care; and 12 died from the sarin exposure. A decade later, the tragic attacks on London’s transport infrastructure on 7/7 and the failed attempts 2 weeks, awakened those horrific memories.

In March of this year, Secretary of State for Transport, Alistair Darling, announced a broad range of security related issues for the British Rail Industry. Most issues concentrate on enabling staff, at all levels, with the implementation of a security culture throughout the industry and acknowledgment that a majority of issues will be, to some extent, attributable to human as well as technical failures.

Six weeks before 7/7, MPS (U.K.) was engaged to conduct security assessments at two major train care centres by a major contractor responsible for Urban Maintenance Operations supporting the London Underground Network. The U.K. Government has long realized that the UK Rail Network is vulnerable to attack and is now pro-actively implementing key legislation to militate against this.

Wally Lewis, Director of Operations & Administration, MPS (U.K.) explained the concept: “What we’re looking at is an Interchange Strategy -- to promote: the development of new and enhanced rail facilities at ports and inland terminals; an increase in the proportion of warehousing, which is rail-connected; an increase in the available intermodal terminal capacity; and, on the developers side of rail-connected distribution sites, a distinct need to secure support for their development schemes -- to maximize the successful security implementation -- in the planning process. Rail and underground security in the UK has a strong foundation in place which was developed over time. A recent Government review, incorporating those lessons, but with a focus on the different methods (increasingly being used by international terrorists) and taking into account the obvious constraints and practical difficulties in trying to secure the open, mass-transit system that characterizes the rail network today, supports this concept. As with most threats, after identifying the threat, the key is to then keep it at bay and hopefully negate it. We know the nature of the threat, a rough modus operandi and the targets. Simply stated: strike at the very core of western civilization -- its people -- regardless of age, color, gender or creed.”

MPS CEO, John Bennett added that: “… having completed the first security assessments in the UK, our team is looking to expand into the greater infrastructure of the UK Rail Industry. This, of course, will not detract from our primary focus on the maritime/intermodal/transportation industries, but complement it. There are distinct similarities between the modes of transport and definite crossovers, particularly with regard to containerization and deep sea/rail/road freight.”

In the United States lawmakers are aggressively pursuing passage of legislation, this year, to improve rail security – suggesting that the nation's railroads have taken a “backseat to other antiterrorism funding efforts.” However, rail-related trade groups appear lukewarm to these initiatives because, they say, the provisions will increase costs for both the industry and for consumers. Still, everyone agrees, “… something should be done, and it should be done now.”

The Filtration of Process Water and Its Importance in the Petroleum Industry; Section 3: Cooling and Amine Systems

Petroleum Industry Cooling Systems and how they can affect system instrumentation and efficiency.

(PRWEB) August 14, 2005 -- Cooling Systems: Cooling systems accumulate airborne dirt and other contaminants that can affect system instrumentation and efficiency. Dirt and iron fouling can rob the system of the required heat transfer capacity and increase frictional hydraulic losses. Cooling systems with inefficient filtration can result in the need for labor-intensive tower cleanouts and heat exchanger refurbishing. Efficient systems will extend equipment life and maintain maximum heat transfer. Removal of 98% of particles of 10 µ and larger is recommended for effective cooling water filtration.

Tubular backwashing systems provide economical method of automated solids removal with minimal backwash volumes. Clean cooling water reduces manual cleanouts, reduces chemical consumption, helps eliminate instrument plugging, and maximizes cooling efficiency. If space is at a premium, tubular systems are available in a nonlinear configuration. For example, the Ronningen-Petter AFR Series tubular backwashing pressure filter has a 1m² footprint.

Amine Systems: Amine systems require filtration to remove contaminants such as pipe scale, iron sulfide, and salt precipitants from the process. If the amine is dark amber to greenish in color, the stream is dirty. For maximum efficiency, the amine stream should be as clear as fresh water. Contaminant removal greatly increases amine efficiency and reduces the system's operating costs.

Problems created by dirty or unfiltered mine include iron sulfides that cause foaming in towers. Contaminants that collect on tower trays reduce efficiency and increase pressure drop across the tower. Solids that build up in the flash drum reduce the available liquid area, which results in incomplete separation of hydrocarbons and amine. Contaminants in the surge drum result in a constant supply of new solids in the flow. When particles settle out, they collect in piping, tanks, heat exchangers, and reboilers causing increasing corrosion, plugging, and fouling of the equipment and poor heat transfer.

Typically, disposable media are used on the lean amine loop and backwashing filters on the rich amine loop. When considering disposables, proper media selection will have the most direct effect on system efficiency and therefore cost effectiveness. For example, nominal efficiency media are not effective because too much dirt passes through the filter. Polypropylene media traps oils and can become blind before the full dirt holding capacity is reached.

For a typical 20% side stream, base the filter system size on flow rates recommended for the type of media used. The optimum flowrate is a compromise between cost and dirt holding. The slower the flowrate, the more dirt the media will hold. If there are oils in the amine or if the temperature exceeds 180˚ F (82˚ C), cellulose or polyester media are recommended; cellulose will generally cost less.

If the amine system has not been filtered or if there are signs of high dirt loading (again, a green or amber color) filtration is highly recommended. To reduce costs, stage the cleaning process. Begin with media that will eliminate larger µ particulate, and step the process gradually into smaller retentions with each change out, ending ultimately with retentions in the 5 - 10 µ range. To keep the system at optimum performance, use high efficiency, absolute rated media at a maximum of 10 µ.

Although more prevalent on the sulfur rich side, backwashing, or self-cleaning tubular systems are ideal for both the rich and lean sides of the amine loop because they eliminate operator exposure and disposal of often-hazardous spent bags or cartridges. The closed system benefits of a backwashing filter are especially important when on the rich side of the amine loop because of the elimination of operator exposure to the highly toxic sulfur being removed.

Backwashing filters should be sized at a flux rate of approximately 4 - 8 gpm/ft². The filter media should be 5 or 10 µ, high efficiency (+98%) filter elements constructed of single layer sintered wire mesh. When the filter is installed on a dirty system, it will typically backwash continuously for the first two to three days. Then, the backwash interval will start to increase and within a week, the amine will be clean and the backwash interval will increase to eight hours or more.

Backwashing filters are self-correcting during and after upsets. During upset conditions, the filter will start backwashing continuously. Once the process returns to normal, backwash interval times will also return to normal. The next article (section 4) will examine how to select the right filter for your process requirements.

Esterel Technologies Introduces CVK™ (Compiler Verification Kit)

New module in the SCADE Suite™ tool chain accelerates the development and certification of safety-critical software.

MOUNTAIN VIEW (California) and ELANCOURT (France) (PRWEB) August 12, 2005 -- Esterel Technologies has added the CVK™ (Compiler Verification Kit) to its SCADE Suite development tool for safety-critical embedded software applications. Developing safety critical software implies demonstrating that the system requirements have been transformed and implemented correctly at each and every step of the software development process. This traditionally implies time-consuming reviews and tests that generally represent more than half of a safety critical project’s costs.

The SCADE Suite™ solution enables an efficient methodology that consists of:
1. Capturing the software specifications in an unambiguous software model.
2. Verifying requirements at the model level early in the development process, when the detection and fixing of software errors are easier and cheaper.
3. Generating certifiable embedded code with the SCADE KCG qualified code generator.
4. Using SCADE’s new CVK, verifying the target processor with the cross-compiler environment, resulting in a proven platform for executing any volume of SCADE-generated C code.

KCG, the SCADE Suite automatic code generator, has been qualified as a Level A development tool under RTCA DO-178B, and certified as a product for all SIL levels under IEC 61508. Therefore KCG creates immediately certifiable code from the SCADE model-based development system. The new Compiler Verification Kit (CVK) from Esterel Technologies now enables developers to prove, with a limited effort, that the C code generated from any SCADE environment will execute correctly on a selected target platform.

KCG produces an exactly defined and circumscribed subset of C. Applied to SCADE models, it generates a totally predictable C code structure. It is therefore possible to define a reference SCADE model which will produce every possible C construct upon code generation that KCG can produce. This is the foundation of Esterel’s CVK.

With CVK, the user receives the following components to verify a target platform:
1. A SCADE model containing all possible SCADE constructs.
2. The reference C code generated from this model.
3. A set of test vectors that enable testing of the C code generated from this sample model at the 100% MC/DC level. Applying this test suite will ensure consistent behavior between the SCADE models running on a host development environment and the compiled SCADE-generated C code running on a target.
4. Documentation and methodology descriptions as requested by certifying bodies.

This CVK verification needs to be performed only once for any compiler/linker/processor combination, saving SCADE users substantial engineering and test resources for DO-178B and IEC 61508 certified projects.

CVK is processor-independent and compatible with all C cross-development systems.

“CVK provides the critical link that ensures the certifiable flow between the SCADE graphical models, KCG-generated C code, and object code,” states Chip Downing, CEO of Esterel Technologies Inc. “Our DO-178B aerospace and defense customers, as well as our IEC 61508 customers in automotive and transportation industries, will derive substantial savings and efficiencies from this exciting new SCADE component.”

The tools from Esterel Technologies allow the design of unambiguous specifications of software systems, to simulate them and automatically verify these designs with the help of formal methods.

About SCADE Suite

SCADE Suite, a design environment for safety-critical embedded software applications, provides graphical specification capture and simulation, along with the capability to check safety properties at the model level. In addition, the SCADE KCG certified code generator has achieved compliance with the highest safety standards, IEC 61508 for all SIL levels and RTCA DO-178B up to level A, enabling rapid deployment of SCADE-generated designs. SCADE Design Verifier™ is the industry leader in providing a platform for applying formal methods to control systems models.

About Esterel Technologies

Esterel Technologies’ tools create unambiguous specifications that produce correct-by-construction, automated implementation in software and/or hardware. Today, SCADE Suite™ is the standard for the creation of RTCA DO-178B, EUROCAE ED-12B, IEC 61508 and EN50128 safety-critical embedded software in the civilian avionics and transportation industries. SCADE Drive™ is the emerging standard for the creation of safety-critical embedded software in the automotive industry. Esterel Studio™ enables electronics hardware designers to create golden specification models that can be automatically implemented in RTL or C.

Explains KMSI President Jack E. Lee, "Over the past year, there has been significant consolidation in the e-learning and learning management technology industries. Leading providers like Docent, Thinq, Saba and Click2Learn have either acquired, been acquired, or merged with one of their most significant competitors. The KMx Migration Program for Pathlore Learning Management Suite clients was created following the announcement that SumTotal Systems Inc. would acquire rival Pathlore Software Corporation. KMx provides the solution for Pathlore customers who realize that the Pathlore Learning Management Suite may quickly become obsolete. The program will enable Pathlore Learning Management Suite clients to move forward with their initiatives without the worries of product uncertainty, availability of software support and maintenance and the inevitable technology conflicts that arise when competitors merge."

Explains KMSI CTO Mike Binnix, "When we founded KMSI, we had a vision of what could be done to reinvigorate the learning technology marketplace. Our founding team brought over 100 years of hands-on experience with nearly all of the leading learning technology platforms and e-learning development suites. Our plan was simple; identify the major areas for improvement in both technologies and processes and use that information to create a company and a platform that could ensure the success or our client's initiatives."

Optimal Solutions and Technologies (OST) Assessed at CMMI Level 3

Optimal Solutions and Technologies (OST) today announced that the company has been assessed at Level 3 of the Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI) across its entire organization. OST achieved this milestone after a rigorous assessment by an independent, third party assessor.

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) August 10, 2005 -- Optimal Solutions and Technologies (OST) today announced that the company has been assessed at Level 3 of the Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI) across its entire organization. OST achieved this milestone after a rigorous assessment by an independent, third party assessor.

The CMMI standard, developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), is an improvement on the best practices of previous CMM models. The SEI is a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the US Department of Defense and operated by Carnegie Mellon University of Pittsburgh, PA.

Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI) is an approach that provides organizations with the essential elements of effective process improvement. It can be used to guide process improvement across a project, a division, or an entire organization. CMMI helps integrate traditionally separate organizational functions, set process improvement goals and priorities, provide guidance for quality processes, and provide a point of reference for appraising current processes. Currently, fewer than 300 organizations worldwide are assessed at CMMI Level 3 or above.

“Achieving CMMI Level 3 across our entire organization enables OST to push its quality standards to new levels” says Vijay Narula, CEO. "With CMMI, we can more explicitly link management and delivery activities to our client's business objectives. CMMI will not only strengthen our ability to deliver technical solutions, but also allow us to better manage risk, to improve decision making, and to maintain our outstanding delivery track record.”

OST began implementing CMM-based practices in 2002. In 2003, OST was externally assessed at Level 3 under the Software (SW)-CMM model. “Our CMMI Level 3 assessment represents - in the space of less than two years - a critical second external validation of OST's performance and its commitment to delivering quality solutions,” says Ajay Madan, COO. “Our entire staff is proud of successfully implementing the best-in-industry processes and being recognized for continuously improving organizational processes.” “We will continue our commitment to process improvement in the years to come,” Narula added.

Madan further adds that OST's CMMI Level 3 achievement is valued for far more than the certification. “It literally transforms the way we approach our client's challenges. By coupling process discipline and innovation, OST will continue to differentiate itself from its competitors.” Process improvement forms a cornerstone of OST's long-term growth strategy and places the firm in a position of strength when compared to its traditional competition in both the private and public sectors.

About OST:

OST is a provider of information technology and management consulting solutions mainly to the aviation, defense, financial, health, insurance, transportation, and utility industries. Its client base includes numerous Fortune 1,000 companies and public sector organizations including the US Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Transportation, and Treasury, as well as state and local governments.

Vodium Awarded Contract with the Naval Education and Training Command (NETC)

Company selected by NETC as the provider of online training and education technologies and services across the Navy.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) August 10, 2005 -- Vodium announced today that it has been awarded a two-year contract with the U.S. Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) to be the provider of video webcast technology and services to deliver distance learning courses. Under the agreement, Vodium will provide over fifty hours of multimedia on-demand courses through the Navy’s Integrated Learning Environment (ILE) as well as Navy Knowledge Online (NKO) portal. These training courses will be delivered to Navy Seamen throughout the world.

The focus of the NETC initiative is to increase effectiveness through improved communication and understanding and to drive a more rapid transformation while also reducing overall Navy program costs. Restricted travel budgets, time considerations, and the growing backlog of pertinent and evolving issues, changes and priorities in need of immediate delivery, have led the Navy to recognize the need for NETC to develop and provide distance learning educational information and professional development courses to the entire training and education organization.

The goal of the project is to leverage existing materials, capture key leadership briefings, conferences, and high cost contracted training events and export them to the entire organization to increase their knowledge and understanding in order to align efforts across the enterprise. The plan is to capture and digitize these key events and all supporting materials and build them into learning enhanced, Internet deliverable versions of these same events. The envisioned capability will offer NETC the tools to track usage of online curricula, test students on completion and comprehension, segment and compartmentalize access to courses, deliver and receive student experience surveys, deliver the courses effectively both domestically and abroad, deliver course material to high and low bandwidth Internet users, and remain an online reference tool for NETC. The end result will become an on-demand, training library of content for the Navy workforce to access from their homes, offices, or abroad, at any time.

"The Navy selected Vodium because of our unique technology platform which allows training courseware to be combined with knowledge management, our high levels of service, and competitive pricing”, said Cameron Clarke, President and CEO of Vodium. “We’ve been striving to educate the training community about the value of building online learning libraries across disciplines, and we are thrilled to see that the Navy shares our vision. Vodium’s platform is a great fit for their needs and we look forward to delivering more of this type of solution to the Department of Defense and civilian agencies,” continued Clarke.

Tiltan Chooses MAK Technologies’ VR-Link for TView Visual System

Tiltan is using MAK's VR-Link networking toolkit for HLA and DIS connectivity in their TView Visual System.

Cambridge, MA (PRWEB) August 5, 2005 –- MÄK Technologies, the world’s leading supplier of distributed simulation software, announced that Tiltan has chosen to use VR-Link® in their TView visualization system making it fully compatible with both DIS and HLA simulation networks. Tiltan’s TView product is used for a wide variety of military and urban planning uses.

TView is Tiltan's visual system designed to create out-the-window and sensor scenes for training and simulation. It generates photo-realistic visual and sensor scenes of real-world locations. TView also enables simulation of network-centric operations and supports MOUT (Military Operations in Urban Terrain) scenarios.

"Simulating modern network-centric operations is a complex task, being inherently distributed and demanding high levels of graphic fidelity. Having invested heavily in the capability to visualize dense urban environments and massive scenarios, we looked to complement our graphic strengths with the best solution we could find for interoperability," said Yaron Vilan, Tiltan's vice president of business development. "We believe that by embedding MÄK's excellent product into TView, we are providing our customers with better value and investment protection, as well as reinforcing TView's position as the best-of-breed PC-based interoperable visualization solution."

VR-Link is a networking toolkit for linking simulations via the Department of Defense HLA and DIS networking protocols. It is the best-selling toolkit of its kind. VR-Link simulations can be fully HLA compliant while simultaneously maintaining DIS compatibility. VR-Link provides a single documented API that abstracts away the details of DIS or HLA

”It is only natural that Tiltan's TView, being widely used at Israeli Ministry of Defense, is using VR-Link , the de facto standard for Israeli industry and IMOD when they need DIS and HLA networking,” said Amir Shiloah, copartner and managing director of Synergy. “This decision opens Tiltan to enjoy the power of interoperability.”

Synergy Integration Ltd., MÄK’s reseller in Israel, was responsible for negotiating the sale.

(PRWEB) August 4, 2005 -- Mecmesin Limited has announced the launch of new versions of their Advanced Force Gauge (AFG) and Basic Force Gauge (BFG). A rationalisation of the manufacturing process for these instruments has enabled significant price reductions to be introduced.

Out Of This World -- Stake a Claim to the Tenth Planet .com Domain Name

Astronomers have made the startling discovery of a tenth planet in our solar system recently. Now, an eBay auction will allow a visionary company or individual to own the TenthPlanet.com domain in cyberspace.

(PRWEB) Aug. 2, 2005 -- NASA announced this past week the discovery of a tenth planet, larger than Pluto, in our outer solar system.

It will be decades before space explorers have the technology to reach this distant planet, and plant a flag on it.

However, the owner of TenthPlanet.com has created an eBay auction to allow enterprising companies or individuals to "stake their claim" to this "tenth planet" in cyberspace.

"We originally purchased this domain name years ago, in order to build an astronomy portal, but got sidetracked by other projects," said George Kirikos. The Canadian owner of the domain name, whose company operates other websites such as Math.com, hoped that the new owners build a website that is "out of this world."

Outer space represents virgin territory, and no country has yet raised a flag or made a claim to the Tenth Planet. This is in sharp contrast to various hotspots on earth, where countries even have gone to war to defend their land. Canada and Denmark have recently had a territorial dispute over Hans Island in the high arctic. On July 13, 2005 Canadian soldiers landed on the tiny island and erected an Inuit Inukshuk along with a Canadian flag.

While new domain names can typically be registered at prices below $35 from such registrars as Network Solutions, GoDaddy.com, eNom.com, Dotster.com or Moniker.com, prospective domain registrants have tended to learn fairly quickly that all the best domain names are already registered to others. Thus, an active secondary market has emerged in buying and selling domain names, via eBay, or other specialized marketplaces such as GreatDomains.com, Sedo.com or Afternic.com.

Domain names are used by companies and individuals to provide an easy-to-remember virtual address for their visitors to find them online. Common words and phrases like Cars.com or Hotels.com are especially desirable. In 2005, the domain name market has been very active, with the highest reported sale being Website.com for USD $750,000. Other top domains that changed hands in 2005 include Local.com, Uruguay.com and GospelMusic.com, all at prices greater than USD $100,000. Some domain names have even sold for millions of dollars, such as Korea.com for $5 million in 2000.

Visit www.TenthPlanet.com or search eBay for "TenthPlanet.com" to participate in the auction, which ends on August 10, 2005.

With the growing need for more effective internal financial controls, SAEG investigated tools that would enable the organization to better understand, act on, and influence its business performance. The driving forces behind SAEG’s search were both the need for more effective annual and interim organizational budgeting and financial management controls as well as more effective project-level budgeting and program visibility. eProMT™ was selected based on its unsurpassed ease-of-use, comprehensive functionality, lower cost and rapid implementation.

"We started out looking for a budgeting package to help with our annual organizational budgeting process, and what we found in eProMT™ was exactly that plus a comprehensive project management toolset with robust budgeting features at the project-level. We have now adopted the product as the primary interface for both our organizational and program management workforce going forward,” said James Blair, Vice President, Controller for SAEG. “And yes, we will fully utilize the product for our budgeting cycle.”

“We are very pleased that eProMT™ has been selected as SAEG’s primary interface for both operations and program management. We are especially excited about how quickly eProMT™ has been adopted into the organization’s culture. SAEG’s experience confirms that eProMT™ provides the right mix of functionality and flexibility needed by stakeholders to proactively manage their respective businesses,” said Layne Leach, CEO of SIRA, Inc. “Our management team appreciates the confidence SAEG has in our product and looks forward to supporting the organization’s efforts to make eProMT™ an integral part of its financial management process.”

“The fact that the SIRA management team were themselves program managers, project accountants, and corporate financial analysts and managers before they became entrepreneurs has made working with them a pleasure. They understand the issues we face, they speak our language, and they appreciate the complexities inherent in a project-oriented, government contracting business environment,” noted Mr. Blair. “Throughout the implementation process we were impressed with the technical knowledge and business acumen of the SIRA team. Their willingness to work closely with us through this process together with their ability to provide solutions targeted to meet our needs has validated our decision to go with their product.”

The Filtration of Process Water, and Its Importance in the Petroleum Industry

The Petroleum industry is one of Ronningen-Petter's areas of expertise. Therefore, I feel that this paper--written by one of our employees, Craig Annable, and published by Hydrocarbon Engineering--would be of interest to you. Due to its length, this will be posted in five different articles: Introduction, Oilfield Production Site, Cooling and Amine Systems,Selecting the Right Filter, Disposable and Cleanable Filter Media.

(PRWEB) July 31, 2005 -- Upstream, downstream, and throughout the petroleum industry most discussions of filtration focus on the oil itself, and it is extracted from the wellhead and refined into saleable products. Yet throughout this process, a critical and consistent component is the use of water. Although the water quality required depends upon its end use, without filtration, unfiltered water can foul downstream equipment and contaminate catalysts. The result is increased maintenance and repair costs, a potentially downed system and lower conversion rates and process yields.

Filtering process water is very important due to its influence on process flow, its ability to protect downstream equipment/piping, and its significant role in the quality/value of finished goods. Hence, this can play a critical role in optimizing the refining process. The right filtration equipment can affect a company's environmental impact through the reduction of emissions and waste generation. It can also safeguard employees by minimizing their exposure to hazardous materials. These factors, in turn, affect the company's productivity and bottom line.

Despite its significance, many refineries have not realized the benefits of optimized filtration for process water. Installing a system where none has previously existed can be difficult to justify with tight capital budgets. Decision makers face the same challenge when a filtration system is in place and operating. However, a careful look at key cost factors can quickly justify an investment that will generate a significant return. In addition to minimizing overall maintenance costs, other factors include labor costs, the potential costs of lost production, conversion, and recovery of petroleum products during schedule and unscheduled downtime.

When exploring water treatment filtration options, another consideration is water conservancy. With an increased emphasis on reducing environmental impact, there is also an increased emphasis on reducing the amount of water used for industrial processes--especially freshwater. There are two ways to achieve this. One method is to use equipment that requires less fresh water. The second method is water reuse when the amount of water used is mandated by the process requirement. This trend is fuelled by several economic benefits that can be broken down into four separate and specific areas of cost savings:

• Reduced cost for purchase and treatment of fresh water
• Reduced cost for heating process streams or money saved through energy recovery.
• Reduced process losses of expensive and unspent catalyst fines that can be reintroduced and reused.
• Reducing waste treatment costs.
Any decision regarding filtration of water should be weighed against the relative importance of each of these factors.

The next article will examine some specific areas for water treatment within the petroleum industry, and some suggested solutions.
