EPA Shifts to High-Profile Compliance Enforcement Actions: Enviro.BLR.com Advises Environmental Managers

While non-industry sources might think that the EPA has become a paper tiger, it is anything but for companies with stormwater runoff, air pollution, or water pollution issues. The Agency has decided it gets the most bang for the buck with high-profile citations, according to Enviro.BLR.com

Old Saybrook, CT (PWREB) January 20, 2022 –- If you read the general press it would be easy to draw the conclusion that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a toothless tiger.

But Steve Quilliam, editor at Enviro.BLR.com – Making State Environmental Compliance Easier, says, “The truth is that the EPA is very interested in enforcement, particularly in storm water runoff, and in air and water pollution.” Quilliam notes, “the EPA is looking for high-profile cases that give its enforcement activities the greatest bang for the buck. Companies with hazardous waste issues should take steps to prepare now, before an inspector arrives, and a highly publicized citation results.”

The Agency’s enforcement strategy comes as budgets for programs like Superfund have been cut, and the Bush administration has made other moves unpopular with environmental groups.

EPA Enforcement Activity Increased
Enviro.BLR.com, a website for environmental managers, reports that EPA enforcement statistics for FY 2004 show a very busy Agency. It conducted 21,000 inspections during the year, up 11% over FY 2003. Those inspections resulted in dramatically more penalties, with 2,248 civil administrative penalty actions finalized — a whopping 32% increase. Criminal charges, certainly the worst nightmare for corporate environmental executives, also jumped: 293 criminal defendants were charged with environmental crimes during the year, 46 more than in FY 2003.

State Environmental Compliance an Issue
Quilliam points out that the federal EPA is not the only agency enforcing environmental laws. “Most states have their own complicated environmental regulations for business to comply with.” Fortunately, Business & Legal Reports, Inc.’s plain-English website, Enviro.BLR.com, features plain-English interpretations of all federal and state regulations. Arranged by topic and including hundreds of tools like checklists and inspection forms, the website simplifies the job of complying with complex regulations.

Enviro.BLR.com offers a free download of its informative White Paper, “Regulatory Analysis – Inspections,” with detailed advice on how to prepare for an EPA inspection. To get this download go to http://www.blr.com/80502500/WBE402 , or call 800-727-5257

Software Company Releases Fundamental Asset to Chemical Import Industry

VISCO to Release Updated Version of Enterprise Resource Planning Software

Kingston, NY (PRWEB) January 7, 2022 -- To meet the demand for a comprehensive Enterprise Resource Planning application for the chemical industry, Venture Information System (VIS) 2.0 will be released on January 7, 2005. This release represents an extensive, 12-month redesign project that was driven exclusively by VISCO’s primary vertical market: Chemical Importers.

“Chemical importers have found tremendous value in VIS because it was originally designed for a chemical importer,” says VP of Sales, Tim Peck. “VIS is extremely flexible and allows small and medium importers to understand their business in the kind of detail that up until now has been almost impossible. For instance, it can be used to re-allocate goods that are in transit and enable users to match inventory or incoming shipments with specific sales orders. This allows for more aggressive sales strategies and better customer service; two areas that directly impact profits.”

VIS allows users quick and easy access to financial information that is simply not available in real-time from a traditional accounting application. Peck says, “The ability to accrue for anticipated costs like duty, freight charges, and unloading, in addition to factoring in the original cost of goods, allows importers to understand exactly what their profit margin is before they even complete the purchase. These are importer-specific functions that traditional accounting systems simply do not provide. Our approach to the development of the Venture Information System was from the sales, financial and logistic perspectives. Rather than beginning with a system for record-keeping and accounting; then trying to incorporate inventory tracking and financial analysis, we completely reversed the development process.”

VIS will play an even greater role as the importing industry continues to undergo significant changes in response to potential terrorist threats. Because VIS offers unit-level tracking, it provides real risk management capabilities to importers who may need to be able to rapidly identify the source of suspect goods. VIS also has the ability to store images and documents that may be used to help confirm container integrity at various trans-shipment points.

About Venture Information System
The Venture Information System Company (VISCO) is a rapidly growing software development firm located in New York’s Hudson Valley. VISCO’s flagship product, the Venture Information System (VIS) is an Enterprise Resource Planning application designed specifically for importers to improve business efficiencies in the areas of shipment tracking, inventory management, and associated logistics. VISCO is a Microsoftã Certified Partner, and utilizes Microsoft’s .NET Framework®, the first entirely Web-based application architecture. VIS is also recognized by Intuit as a primary source for importers and distributors who use QuickBooks. VIS is currently used by importers in the US, Caribbean, and Europe.

Titan May Improve Origin Of Life Equation

NASA's Huygens probe will enter the atmosphere of Saturn's moon, Titan, to perform experiments that may help Origin Of Life ("OOL") investigators. OOL science provides attractive though so-far incomplete questions about and answers to the building blocks of cell life.

Winter Park, CO (PRWEB) January 6, 2022 -- What if Saturn’s moon, Titan, had the same orbit as Earth? Or what if Titan were 200° C warmer?

The European Space Agency’s Huygens probe, the scientific equipment laden spacecraft that separated from NASA’s Cassini Saturn orbiter on December 24 and is set to enter Titan’s atmosphere January 14, will take measurements of Titan's atmosphere as it descends to Titan’s surface. The atmosphere is rich in nitrogen and contains methane and ethane – two carbon-based gases present on early Earth. Ultraviolet sunlight can break down methane and ethane into organic compounds, which, when combined with other factors, form the building blocks of life.

Prof. Aristotel Pappelis1 and Dr. Peter Bahn2 await the data from Huygens. They have been performing Origin Of Life (“OOL”) experiments, seeking OOL answers for twenty plus years. Are the essential elements present on Titan to duplicate the famous Miller experiment, the “primordial soup”, from which amino acids arise and theoretically can self-order into branched proteins and proto-cells? The Huygens data will help to find answers.

Mark Rudis3, project manager for OOL commercialization, states numerous barriers must be overcome before identifiable compounds can be put in a jar, zapped with an energy source, and out comes a cell. But the science is in place to contemplate such a result.
