Annual Report on China's Petrochemical Industry, 2004-2005

Research and Markets (researchandmarkets.com/reports/c24777) has announced the addition of Annual Report on China''s Petrochemical Industry, 2004-2005 to their offering.

Dublin (PRWEB) September 28, 2005 -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c24777) has announced the addition of Annual Report on China''s Petrochemical Industry, 2004-2005 to their offering.

The report sums up the development of the global and Chinese petrochemical industries in 2004. Through detailed data and full elaboration, it reveals the structure and competition pattern of China's petrochemical industry. Meanwhile, it also presents a comprehensive assessment of the operational strategies and competitiveness of key enterprises in the industry.

The report especially points out the following: In 2004, insufficient production capacity of crude oil and other petrochemical products continued to stimulate the fast growth of the petrochemical.

International cooperation and competition were continuously strengthened. State-owned petrochemical enterprises continued to make institutional, business and strength adjustment. Raw material prices were set to rise, with varying effects on the industry. The industry was in urgent need to look for ways to solve the crude oil shortage problem. In the manufacturing link, State-owned enterprises monopolized the middle and upstream, while private capital competed in the downstream field. Foreign capital staged strong offensives. In the oil product retail field, SINOPEC and PetroChina were in a monopolistic position for the time being, with foreign capital entering in large numbers. In the next few years, oil and petrochemical production will continue to maintain fast growth, with production capacity falling short of demand.

Production regions will become concentrated and new and high technologies and products with high added values will draw attention. The industry will pay more attention to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Based on an in-depth analysis of major factors affecting the development of China's petrochemical industry, 2005-2009, the report presents qualitative and quantitative forecast of the development trend of the industry. Finally, it provides pertinent industry development strategies and recommendations.

New Starch Spray System Boosts the Strength of Paper Products -- A Documented Case Study

Ronningen-Petter DCF self-cleaning filters play key role in new starch spray system that boosts strength of paper products. Corn Products turned to Ronningen-Petter for a DCF filter that is self-cleaning, self-contained, maintenance free, operated by PLC, and able to handle 150 gpm throughout as well as filter out any foreign material greater than 50 microns.

(PRWEB) September 23, 2005 -- United States paper mills and corrugated containers manufacturers have traditionally had access to inexpensive virgin fiber that could be mixed with hardwood or softwood to reach required strength. That has changed in recent years, with increasing dependence on recycled fiber sources, especially for linerboard and medium grades.

However, as the fibers are recycled, they get shorter and weaker which results in a lower grade product with less final sheet strength. Synthetic additives to enhance product strength have often been prohibitively expensive in a marketplace where profit margins have been ravaged by declining paper prices.

Now, a cost-effective starch spray solution has emerged in the United States that is designed to boost paper strength (up to 100% in IGT, 25% in Concora, and 20% in CFC and Mullen) while cutting fiber use by replacing much of the fiber with starch. Essentially, special spray nozzles apply an unmodified starch suspension to the fiber web of paper products to increase their internal strength and improve their surface properties. The starch stays internally on formed sheets and gelatinizes while drying.

Starch supplier Corn Products recently introduced the technology to the US after adapting it from one widely used in Europe and Latin America, where sources of virgin fiber have been scarce for decades. In its starch spraying system, process water mixes with starch to create slurry that flows into a run tank, which is sprayed onto the sheet former.

Filtering closed mill systems.
One key to making the starch spraying system work was proper filtering. This was all the more important since many paper mills now run closed systems in response to environmental regulations limiting water discharge and requiring process water re-use instead of adding fresh water.

"Getting the filtering right was critical, especially for closed systems where process water contains a lot of suspended trash," said a Corn Products representative. "Dirt, grit, metal shavings, anything on the floor of a paper mill that goes into the drain ends up in process water and needs to be filtered. Otherwise, it will plug up the spray nozzles, and could degrade paper quality, destroy sheets traveling at 4,000 ft/min, or even the paper forming wire that can cost upwards of $10,000 to replace."

Initially, Corn Products used two disposable basket-screen filters at a commercial trial location, mixing fresh water with process water in a 50:50 ratio.

"We couldn't keep the basket filters clean," said the representative. "Their surface area was too small and their throughput too low. Every 30-minutes a basket strainer plugged. We would have to tear it apart, clean it, and reassemble it. By that time, the other basket filter was plugged up. Since there was no way to sustain operation with the basket filters not performing, we stopped the trial."

A self-cleaning filter solution.
In the search for starch spraying filtration solution, the starch manufacturer turned to RPA Process Technologies (formerly Ronningen-Petter). RPA has installed thousands of industrial filtration systems worldwide in over 10,000 distinct applications.

A number of criteria for the proper filtration system were determined by collaboration between the two manufacturers. The filters would have to be self-cleaning, self-contained, maintenance-free, operated by PLC, and able to handle 150-gpm throughput as well as filter out any foreign material greater than 50-microns, which could disrupt paper formation.

Based on these criteria, Corn Products installed two Ronningen-Petter DCF-1600 filters on each starch spraying system, one for primary water filtration, and another for secondary starch slurry filtration.

With the DCF self-cleaning filter, process water enters the top inlet and passes through the screen. The screen holds any particles over 50-microns while cleaned water leaves through the bottom outlet. A cleaning disc moves up and down the filter screen, removing debris. With the aid of the downward fluid flow and the disc movement, the debris is deposited in a holding chamber at the bottom of the filter housing and regularly purged through a valve at the bottom of the chamber.

"The DCF self-cleaning filters are a night and day improvement over labor-intensive disposable filters," said the Corn Products representative. "The DCF filters have a much higher throughput, a larger surface area, and automated PLC-programmable clean and purge cycles that can be tailored to specific water configurations at each paper mill."

The Chemicals Distribution Industry in the US Includes about 10,000 companies with combined annual revenue of $70 billion

Dublin - Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c24543) has announced the addition of Chemicals Distributors to their offering.

Brief Excerpt from Industry Overview Chapter:

The chemicals distribution industry in the US includes about 10,000 companies with combined annual revenue of $70 billion. Major companies include Univar, Ashland Distribution, and Brenntag. The industry is fairly fragmented: the largest 50 companies hold only about 40 percent of the market.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Chemical distribution is a cyclical business dependent on industrial demand. The profitability of individual companies depends on an efficient distribution system. Larger companies can offer more products and services. Local and regional distributors can compete effectively through superior service. The industry is highly automated; annual industry revenue per employee is about $800,000.

PRODUCTS, OPERATIONS & TECHNOLOGY

Major products are plastics materials, alkalis and chlorine, detergents and soaps, adhesives, and industrial gases. Plastics account for almost 25 percent of industry revenue.

In addition to selling and transporting chemicals, distributors offer other services including blending, packaging, technical training, and managing customer inventories. Waste removal is a particularly common service to offer. Many suppliers specialize in certain types of chemicals.

Products are bought from manufacturers of industrial chemicals, including petroleum refiners. Multiple suppliers exist for almost all chemical products. A large distributor typically buys from several dozen chemical manufacturers, such as DuPont, Dow, and BASF. Distributors may have long-term distribution agreements with suppliers that specify quantities and price formulas. Such agreements typically renew automatically each year.

Large wholesalers have multiple facilities around the country. Brenntag has over 100 locations, Univar has about 85, and Ashland Distribution has 70.

Kaolin Slurry, a Documented Case Study -- How a Self-cleaning Filtration Unit Handled the Hard-to-Filter Material at a Lower Cost

Kaolin slurry's particle configuration makes it difficult filter, i.e. its structural characteristics can vary with the regional sources of the mineral, which can cause fluctuations in throughput and pressure drop through the screen. This article outlines how the Ronningen-Petter DCF Filter was able to tackle this difficult material, all at a lower cost!

(PRWEB) September 22, 2005 -- A Ronningen-Petter® DCF-1600 four station multiplex, self-cleaning filter system from RPA Process Technologies has successfully replaced traditional vibrating gravity screens in a kaolin slurry processing application.

The DCF-1600 filtration system was installed not only to cope with the many screening problems associated with kaolin slurry filtration, but also to match the increased product flow following an upgrade of the process that doubled plant output.

Kaolin slurry's particle configuration makes it difficult filter, i.e. its structural characteristics can vary with the regional sources of the mineral, which can cause fluctuations in throughput and pressure drop through the screen.

The DCF-1600 system is designed to operate at pressures up to 10.5 bar, which provides a significant safety margin for any operational variations. Its slotted, wedge wire screen can accommodate the full range of particle sizes present in the kaolin slurry, and can provide retention of particles ranging in size from 15 microns to 1125 microns.

The DCF-1600 system's screens are cleaned by a disc, which moves up and down the filter screen parallel to the liquid flow, and mechanically scrapes off the debris in a continuous operation that does not interrupt production. The waste purged from the filter is highly concentrated.

The system also requires minimum maintenance because it does not require motor repairs, and periodic screen replacement and adjustment maintenance is significantly less than with the original vibrating screens. In addition the operator does not need to be continually on hand to monitor the filtration process. The differential pressure across the filter, which provides a good indication of the filter performance, can also be automatically monitored.

According to RPA, the installation of the DCF-1600 filtration system has resulted in increased throughput, high product quality, reduced labor costs and maintenance and downtime, and a reduction in floor space requirement of 70%.

If you would like to learn more about this technology, please contact the Ask Filter Man forum at http://www.rpaprocess.com/Ask-Filter-Man-Blog.asp.

RPA Process Technologies integrates five leading names in filtration, liquid/solid separation and high-viscosity mixing/extrusion, i.e. Ronningen-Petter, Aoustin, Filtres Philippe, Filtres Vernay, and Malaxeurs Guittard.

Chemical Plants Look for Quick Solutions to Increase Security with Pre-Assembled Buildings

Pre-Assembled Buildings offer security solutions for chemical facilities. Pre-assembled buildings serve many needs of chemical facilities.

ST. LOUIS, MO(PRWEB) September 22, 2005 -- According to the Environmental Protection Agency, more than 3,800 chemical plants could affect 10,000 to one million Americans if their toxic gases are released. Although members of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) have voluntarily spent more than $2 billion since 9/11 to enhance security at their plants, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) still has not taken authority over chemical industry security. As a result, the chemical industry requires effective, affordable measures to increase security at its plants.

One inexpensive approach is to install pre-assembled buildings throughout chemical plants because they provide many different functions.

Gregg Pearlstone, Vice President at Porta-King (www.portaking.com), notes that the versatility of pre-assembled buildings makes them ideal for chemical plant security.

“Porta-King’s pre-assembled buildings serve as security checkpoints, equipment storage facilities and guard dog shelters,” said Pearlstone. “They allow security personnel to be stationed throughout the plants to better monitor activities and suspicious behavior.”

The company notes that its pre-assembled buildings provide state-of-the-art technology for security personnel while ensuring its inaccessibility to trespassers. All of Porta-King’s pre-assembled buildings are equipped with laminated hookbolt deadlocks as well as camlocks on operating windows. Other popular features include ballistic rated construction, custom shelves and cabinets to house sophisticated security equipment, exterior lighting packages, intercom systems, data ports and other specialized electronics. These custom designed units also include climate control and can be equipped with pre-plumbed restrooms and other custom design features.

Porta-King pre-assembled buildings are also ideal for chemical plants because of their mobility.

“Due to their transportability, personnel can frequently update the locations of security checkpoints, which deters trespassers and adds flexibility to the facility’s layout,” said Pearlstone.

Porta-King has been a leader in custom-designed, pre-assembled buildings since 1969. In addition to its exterior pre-assembled buildings, Porta-King offers a full line of modular wall systems and enclosures including single and two-story designs, as well as structural steel mezzanines used for storage, production and elevated office space. Katrina's Latest Victim Is Clean-up Efforts

Fast and cost effective heavy metals elimination in groundwater and surrounding sediments are available.

(PRWEB) September 20, 2005 -- Katrina's latest victim could last for decades to come.

Katrina's latest victim may be one of the most severe and longest lasting pollution clean-ups in this country’s history. Homes can be rebuilt, but pollution of the water and surrounding sediments could be with us for generations. This does not need to be the case.

Researchers at Ocean Enviro LCC (714-960-7869) have patented several methodologies specifically designed to combat toxins in the land and water. The U.S. Coast Guard, and Southern California Edison are just a couple of organizations which have seen the fascinating results. Toxins such as, oil, hydrocarbons, PCB’s, nitrates, mercury, lead and even cides 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T can be eradicated. An associate stated his simple analogy "This is similar to normal half life degradation, but at a super accelerated pace."

Environmental contaminants can be rendered into less toxic by-products by treatment with the patented process. During this process, super oxide radicals will bond with and transform molecules of the toxic compounds also called molecular kinetics.

Carbonate alkalinity is produced, which serves to help neutralize acidity and maintain near neutral pH conditions. Certain organic compounds have been isolated and concentrated into a non-toxic product through the patented process. Other patented compounds have been manufactured to facilitate decomposition through a synergistic effect.

Toxicants can degenerate into less toxic substances which still remain above EPA's listed safe levels. Therefore, constant monitoring and revised methodologies must be included during this process.

E-mail Archiving Appliance Cuts Cost and Time to Retrieve E-mails for Legal Discovery

Automated, drop-in e-mail archiving solution is easy-to-use, low-cost forensic tool

St. Paul, Minn. (PRWEB) September 19, 2005 -- Intradyn (www.intradyn.com), the leader in simple, affordable solutions for automated email compliance, has introduced the next version in a line of email archiving appliances it first began marketing in June 2004. The new-generation product, dubbed "ComplianceVault06™," features improved ease-of-use and sets up in as little as ten minutes. Enhancements incorporated into the product are a direct result of customer input.

The ComplianceVault06™ allows for rapid searching of email to improve responsiveness to litigation discovery requests, often called "e-discovery." Intradyn was the first to introduce a simple, all-in-one appliance solution for email archiving at a cost of less than $10k more than 15 months ago, and this new version takes another major step forward in simplicity and functionality. The ComplianceVault06™ Email Archiving & Retrieval Appliance is an integrated hardware/software solution that captures all of a company's email on a continuous basis, from a virtually unlimited number of email boxes. It stores the email on hard disk and, optionally, on tape – including unalterable "WORM" (write once, read many) tape media, if desired. The appliance works with Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, and virtually any IMAP or POP3 email systems. In addition to its use in legal discovery, it also allows companies to meet a variety of email retention needs, whether related to regulatory compliance (SEC 17a-3 and 17a-4, NASD 3110, FDA 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, etc), or simply for good business practice in electronic records management – as relates the requirements of the Sarbanes Oxley Act, for example.

New Capabilities and Benefits
The main features of the new ComplianceVault06™ email archiving appliance are as follows:

* All-new user interface – greatly facilitating ease-of-use, featuring simpler navigation, cleaner design, and drop-down menus, for example. (See http://www.intradyn.com/compliancevault06/newinterface.jpg.)

* Fast, extensive search capabilities - Greatly expanded and advanced search features, including wildcard searches, fuzzy searches, proximity searches, range searches, boosting relevance levels, grouping for sub-queries, field grouping, and – most importantly – the ability to save searches. The new software can search by date or range of dates, the "To" field, the "From" field, and can search key words in email subject lines, message bodies, and/or attachments. Any combination of these search criteria can be selected. Search results tell you the location of emails – that is, where they are physically located, on what storage.

* Exporting of search results – the ability to easily export any email search results, directly from the search results screen, to a file, to a CD, to an email, or to a printed hardcopy, for example. The search is saved in .eml file format. This feature greatly facilitates use of the system for response to SEC auditors, for legal discovery, or for review by a company's legal counsel. Results can easily be imported into the next step in the legal process, such as a litigation support system.

* More audit features – expanding on features already available, to make for even better audit reporting and control. Every single access to the system is tracked, by date, time, and user providing a full audit log.

The new software includes the ability for the compliance officer or examiner to do random samples of email, by several criteria, and to search the audit log database extensively.

Additional Features and Options
The ComplianceVault06™ appliance can be used either alone, so that all email is saved to disk storage only, or the device can be combined with a Sony AIT™ tape library to automatically store the same emails on tape as well, which provides additional archiving flexibility (for example, a second copy for offsite storage). Either standard AIT tape cartridges or WORM AIT cartridges can be used. WORM tape media provides a permanent, non-alterable, tamper-proof repository of all email – sent to and from the firm as well as internal email – suitable for legal and regulatory compliance. The ComplianceVault™ is an integrated, all-in-one appliance that provides email search results with a high evidential weight. Search and retrieval is fast and easy, whether for HR investigations, dispute resolutions, or discovery orders. Advanced search features facilitate forensic analysis, and the device provides a full audit trail.

Also available with all ComplianceVault06™ models is the option of selecting tape encryption, to safeguard stored and transported tapes. Intradyn's Encryptape™ technology is based on the same type of encryption used by the U.S. federal government, the highest level available, which is AES 256-bit – called "strong encryption."

The ComplianceVault06™ is a true appliance, meaning it is a complete, application-specific, plug-and-play network server with a web interface. As such, it is an all-in-one, in-house solution with a single upfront cost -- as differentiated from outsourced, service-provider solutions, which have ongoing costs and risks related to data security and liability.

Meeting Customer Needs
"Email has replaced the telephone as the leading business communication tool," said Gary Doan, Intradyn's CEO. "We developed the original ComplianceVault™ to help brokerage firms comply with the SEC's strict email retention and retrieval regulations, but we discovered that a large number of our customers were not purchasing the appliance to meet these specific regulations. They were smaller public and private companies, trade organizations, municipal governments, and others. We received requests for additional features to make legal discovery easier, and for encryption of tapes, for secure storage and transportation. These customers also wanted to save search sets to run at regular intervals, and to have additional audit and export functions."

Doan continued: "Traditional email backups are typically not searchable, and do not prevent tampering or provide a forensic audit trail. Email archiving with the ability to search the entire email and attachments, and retrieve, with the ability to export the findings with minimal effort, is something virtually every company now needs."

Starting at less than $10,000, the new ComplianceVault06™ appliance has a much lower total cost than other solutions, whether in-house or outsourced. It is a simple, all-in-one, drop-in solution – essentially "email archiving in a box" – requiring no integration, and not affecting a company's existing IT infrastructure. It can be installed and set up quickly, even by non-IT personnel. There are no additional per-user costs, license costs, or other ongoing costs (other than tape media). Unlimited technical support is provided by Intradyn at no additional charge.

Analyst Comments
"People don't search and retrieve out of archives that often, but because of the litigious risk associated with saving e-mails for an extensive period of time, that may require a search and retrieval based on a discovery notice," said Brian Babineau, an analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group, of Milford, Mass. "You need to be able to search based on the requirements outlined in the discovery notification and then export the emails for further review, culling, and evidence preparation by external counsel."

Babineau continued: "The more extensive audit capabilities you have, the easier it is to find what you're looking for, but it also supports many regulation requirements that require you to have an audit trail of who tried to access specific messages or what actions they tried to take. So, the bigger and better audit trail you can build, the better you can support the regulators and knock off a few litigation support requirements on the chain of custody side."

There are many other e-mail archiving solutions on the market, Babineau noted, but "none has both the price point and a combination of hardware and software in one appliance like the ComplianceVault06."

"It's all in one, so you get the software and the non-erasable and rewritable storage in one appliance, as opposed to having to buy the products and storage from separate vendors," he said.

Other Product Enhancements
Additional new features incorporated into the ComplianceVault06™ appliance include, but are not limited to:
* Multiple mail server support
* Ability to write to tape on demand
* Both individual and group user account privileges (21 permission functions can be selected for each user or group)
* New archive scheduling features
* Improved tape cataloging

The new software incorporated into the ComplianceVault06™ appliance is architected to allow for future enhancements. Software updates will continue to be made available by Intradyn online, at no additional charge.

Pricing and Availability
The model numbers for the new ComplianceVault06™ appliance (and respective disk capacities) are as follows: CV061U320 (320 GB), CV061U500 (500 GB), CV061U800 (800 GB), and CV061U1000 (1 TB). MSRP pricing ranges from $8,995 to $11,495. Pricing for the various Sony AIT tape libraries that can be optionally bundled with the ComplianceVault06™ is available at www.storagebysony.com or www.intradyn.com compliancevault/. AIT tape cartridges (WORM and non-WORM) are available from several sources in the channel, and directly from Intradyn.

The new ComplianceVault06™ models will ship by the first week of October and are available through Intradyn's resellers. The "bundled" solution, which includes an optional Sony AIT tape library, is available through Sony's reseller channel. For more information, email e-mail protected from spam bots.

National Energy Center, Washington D.C. Plans for the Looming Energy Crisis

The National Energy Center, Washington D.C. develops planning advice for energy investment, and sustainable practices to conserve energy and extend our domestic energy reserves.

(PRWEB) September 19, 2005 -- The National Energy Center, Washington D.C. brings together industry leaders, intelligence analysts, financial managers, policy and media experts to develop planning advice for energy investment, and sustainable practices to conserve energy and extend our domestic energy reserves.

The Center is being developed by Communication Links, Inc. the geopolitical intelligence company which monitors global developments, technologies, exploration and energy utilization, to create scenarios, solutions and recommendations for the energy needs of towns, countries, companies and individuals, as well as investment profiles for Hedge Funds, and investment managers.

"The vulnerability and lack of investment in energy infrastructure over the past 30 years is clearly highlighted with Hurricane Katrina," explains Alan Simpson, President of Communication Links, Inc. "This had ramifications around the world, and is just the beginning of increasing hardship and economic turmoil during this the Century of Energy Conflict. We can look forward to increasing conflicts between economic giants with nuclear weapons, as traditional supplies of cheap oil become exhausted."

"The predicted effects to the Global Food Chain are slowly unfolding against this backdrop of dwindling resources, increased demand and population growth. New discoveries have not kept pace with our insatiable demand for Oil and natural gas. We now need to bring together all the knowledge and possible scenarios to develop a sustainable plan for the future."

"There are simple modifications in the neglected refining capacity of the US which will significantly increase the supply of domestic oil to the consumer. Waste organic oils can be recycled, and with waste crops converted into diesel fuel for transportation and agriculture. With the advances in broadband telecommunications millions of workers could be off the roads within a short period of time, if corporations understood the positive effects of Telecommuting on the nations energy bill."

Other concerns are the development of Methane Hydrate and the risks in tapping these huge, but unstable reserves of natural gas. Nuclear energy and nuclear recycling become even more important as the US will have to turn to nuclear in the mid term to sustain their electrical energy needs as supplies of natural gas decline. Other alternatives being profiled are wind, solar and geothermal energy, especially for farmers and remote communities.

Volcano Vaporizer Is Still Top of the Line

Forced-air vaporizers continue to prove effectiveness over direct heat.

(PRWEB) September 16, 2005 -- Users continue to rave about the innovative smokeless experience and reliable operation of the Volcano Vaporizer smoking-cessation/aromatherapy device, while forced-air vaporizers in general are proving their effectiveness in a crowded market of inexpensive, direct-heat devices.

The Volcano has received numerous accolades from industry professionals, such as the Dr. Rudolph Eberle Prize for innovation in Germany, and Best Vaporizer 2003 here in the U.S. Other companies have tried – with limited success – to copy the Volcano’s unique experience, which literally allows the user to "smoke without smoking™". The patented device accomplishes this by allowing inhalation of only less-harmful vapors, rather than smoke, while maintaining all the flavor of the tobacco or other combustible material.

The major difference between less-expensive vaporizers and the Volcano is the way heat is transferred – a key element in successful vaporization. Many manufacturers of inexpensive vaporizers such as BC, Aromed, Vapor Doc, Vapor Cannon and other box-style vaporizers are less effective because they rely on a heat plate or may even directly combust the plant material, bringing it to the point of burning rather than simply removing the useful vapors and leaving behind the plant residue.

High-quality vaporizers like the Volcano are considered top of the line because they utilize a forced-air chamber, bringing the plant material to a high temperature without burning it.

"The best vaporizers on the market use forced air," notes Steve Steinberg, who sells the Volcano wholesale to area shops. "Vapir, Vaporzilla, and the Volcano are good examples of forced air devices. Of these, the Volcano is the highest quality vaporizer, with the best results on test subjects and the easiest to use among many choices out there.

"Some use a heat gun, but this is not advisable because it can impart chemicals from plastics, rubbers, and metals used in the gun," he added. "Heat guns are not made as inhalation devices. They are for industrial use, not medical use. The Volcano is 100-percent medical grade, and this is very important since vaporizers are made to create breathable vapor which is clean and imparts no residue."

Steinberg noted that some vaporizers use an aluminum heating element, while others may utilize a ceramic element. While ceramic is cleaner, it does not create an even temperature control so the results may be unpredictable. He recommends vaporizers that rely on aluminum elements for heat, such as the Volcano.

"Makers of ceramic elements argue they are cleaner burning, while manufacturers who use aluminum elements argue that temperature control is more efficient with an aluminum block," he said. "The element does not attain a high enough temperature to oxidize the aluminum, so the block presents no more health threat than an aluminum can. Plus, the aluminum heats more evenly and quickly. The best vaporizer – the Volcano – uses an aluminum block. The manufacturer is looking into ceramic elements that can work, but one reason the Volcano maintains such perfect temperature control is because it uses an aluminum element and block, and aluminum has different properties than potential practical designs using ceramics. An aluminum element and block can more rapidly adjust for effects of air pressure and flow over plant material."

"The best Vaporizers are more advanced than ever before, but they still have a ways to go considering they use plastics, aluminum and other materials that can potentially produce toxins," he added. "The key to vaporization is maintaining control over temperature and flow, which ultimately leads to more perfect control over vapor density."

The Volcano is the leading edge vaporizer on the market. Serious wholesale inquiries should be directed to www.vaporizeit.com, or by calling Steve at (510) 414-8429.

The Volcano is manufactured in Tuttlingen, a town in Southern Germany regarded internationally as the center of medical technology development and manufacturing, and sold in the United States through an agreement with Slide4less.com and its subsidiaries. More information on the Volcano can be obtained at www.vaporizeit.com or www.storz-bickel.com.

Physician Worries About the Possible Long-Term Health Impact for Katrina’s Survivors, Workers

Isaac Eliaz, MD is speaking out on the possible long-term health impact of Katrina for some folks. He is worried about survivors and workers wading through the sewage and absorbing toxic chemicals and metals, especially lead. He is donating heavy metal test kits to help people identify their individual exposure.

Santa Rosa, CA (PRWEB) September 15, 2005 -- "There are truly no by-standers in this national tragedy," said Isaac Eliaz, MD. "Each of us has a personal responsibility to lend a hand in our own way – this is the only way that our country will heal from this trauma on a personal and collective basis." Dr. Eliaz whose clinical practice is in the SF Bay Area is sharing his medical expertise and concern about the health impact for the people who have been exposed to the toxic muck in New Orleans – sewage, e-coli, various viruses, heavy metals, lead concentrations and poisons that have been part of the aftermath of Katrina. "There are serious short and long term health implications that will be experienced if attention is not paid to this issue," he added. "Pregnant women should be especially concerned because a fetus cannot handle the toxicity as well as an adult."

While, food, water and housing needs are paramount, Dr. Eliaz believes that getting rid of the toxins must happen to eliminate the very real threat to the victims and rescue workers in the area. He stresses that it’s going to become essential. "These toxins (especially lead) can cause both long-term and immediate health problems. They directly enter the blood stream and soft tissue of the body, the build-up of which could cause a breakdown of the immune system leaving the body vulnerable to infection as well as illness for years to come," he added.

These potential health problems have inspired Dr. Eliaz to help by educating the public and personally donating test kits to people who have been affected. "The public health crisis in the aftermath of Katrina is going to increase if people do not find a way to detoxify," he said. "After people hydrate, feed their families and themselves and establish a roof over their heads, this should be one of their next priorities, so that they are able to emerge from this catastrophe in reasonable good health. This is my personal advice and my offering of support." Dr Eliaz has reached out to FEMA to give out the kits and cleansing products.

BioProcessors’ SimCell Platform Selected by Novo Nordisk: Company Chooses SimCell MicroBioreactor System For High-Throughput Mammalian Cell Culture Process Development

Pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk purchases BioProcessors' MicroBioreactor Automation Management System, Proves Critical to the Success of Novo Nordisk’s Biologics Programs

WOBURN, MA, U.S.A. (PRWEB) September 15, 2005 -- BioProcessors announced the sale of the SimCell™ MicroBioreactor Automation Management System to Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE: NVO), having successfully completed platform evaluation trials. Novo Nordisk employs 21,000 employees in 78 countries, and markets its products in 179 countries. The SimCell™ platform enables Novo Nordisk to rapidly accelerate their mammalian cell culture process development initiatives. As a result of the joint effort, the companies demonstrated the predictability and scalability of BioProcessors’ MicroBioreactor Array and a high-throughput robotic workstation to conventional bioreactor systems. BioProcessors’ SimCell MicroBioreactor solutions enable biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to increase cell culture experiment capacity by orders-of-magnitude with greater data quality, faster cycles and lower costs than conventional biopharmaceutical processing methods.

"Existing high-throughput systems emphasize miniaturization at the expense of performance and data generation, in most cases limiting the usefulness of such high-throughput tools to only a screening function," said Dr. Andrey Zarur, CEO and President, BioProcessors. "This paradox is clearly visible in the area of cell culture where 96 well plates and shake flasks are used as high-throughput screens for cell line selection, media and process optimization. In all but the simplest of processes these systems are at best only a crude approximation of a working bioreactor and hence provide little reliably scalable cell culture process information. Poor scalability and, in the case of shake flasks, insufficient experimental power to provide complete full factorial process development DOEs limits researchers ‘real-time’ ability to identify robust processes capable of operating at their global optima," Dr. Zarur added. BioProcessors SimCell MicroBioreactors address this process development "data gap" by integrating microfluidics with remote monitoring and control, enabling high-throughput process development through the miniaturization of bioreactors that accurately simulate full scale manufacturing processes.

RELEX Free Webcast: Microscopy for Nanomaterials Characterization by Dr. Nan Yao from Princeton University

"Microscopy for Nanomaterials Characterization," a free Webcast by Dr. Nan Yao, Director of the Imaging and Analysis Center, Materials Institute, Princeton University - is now available on-demand

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 7, 2005 –- The free Webcast "Microscopy for Nanomaterials Characterization," by Dr. Nan Yao, Director of the Imaging and Analysis Center, Materials Institute, Princeton University - is now available on-demand.

This Webcast was first broadcasted live at the Research Lab Expo (RELEX), an online conference and virtual exhibition launched by the Reed Business Information Science.

To register for this free Webcast, visit: http://relex.unisfair.com/registration.jsp?code=1225

Webcast Summary:
Science and technology are ever seeking to build structures of progressively smaller size. This effort at miniaturization has finally reached the point where structures and materials can be built through "atom-by-atom" engineering. Typical chemical bonds separate atoms by a fraction of a nanometer (10-9 m), and the term nanotechnology has been coined for this emerging area of development.

By manipulating the arrangements and bonding of atoms, materials can be designed with a far vaster range of physical, chemical and biological properties than has been previously conceived. But how does one characterize the relationship between starting composition, which can be controlled, with the resulting structure and properties of a nanoscale-designed material that has superior and unique performance?

Microscopy is essential to the development of nanotechnology, serving as its eyes and hands. This presentation comprehensively covers the state-of-the-art electron and ion microscopy techniques that observe, characterize, measure and manipulate materials on the nanometer scale.
