NovAtel Inc. Demonstrates First North American Dual Mode GPS & Galileo Receiver to CSA

NovAtel Inc. (NASDAQ: NGPS), a precise positioning technology company, announced today that it has successfully demonstrated the performance of a dual mode GPS and Galileo L1/E5A dual frequency prototype receiver to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), developed under a contract awarded in September 2004.

(NASDAQ: NGPS), a precise positioning technology company, announced today that it has successfully demonstrated the performance of a dual mode GPS and Galileo L1/E5A dual frequency prototype receiver to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), developed under a contract awarded in September 2004. These receivers will be ready to accept signals from the first Galileo satellites scheduled to launch later this year or in early 2006. Galileo is Europe’s state-of-the-art satellite navigation system, which is expected to be operational by 2010/12 with up to 30 satellites orbiting the earth.

NovAtel is developing two sets of L1/E5A engineering receivers and L1/E5A transmitters for the CSA for use with Galileo satellites. The receiver is being integrated into a modified version of NovAtel’s WAAS-GII system, which also includes the Euro-3M L1/L2 dual frequency GPS receiver. The signal generator is based on a previous design built for the new U.S. Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) uplink system.

Getting the Lead Out - European Regulations Force Electronics Companies to Clean up, Impact Local Manufacturers and Distributors

Consumers will soon have the comfort of knowing that their next laptop, cell phone and microwave may be free of hazardous components. Meanwhile, electronic component manufacturers and distributors are scrambling to re-engineer their supply chains.

Fort Worth, TX (PRWEB) May 24, 2021 -– Consumers will soon have the comfort of knowing that their next laptop, cell phone and microwave may be free of hazardous components. For that they can thank the European Union, for issuing the Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive that takes effect in the summer of 2006.

The RoHS directive limits the amount of lead and other toxic substances that electronics manufacturers can use in their products. While the EU directive doesn't have the force of law in the United States, many U.S.-based electronics manufacturers are expected to adopt the EU standards for all of their products, not just those intended for sale in Europe.

Though this may come as good news for consumers, the EU directive has manufacturers and distributors scrambling to re-engineer their supply chains. As one of the top North American electronic component distributors, Allied Electronics must also manage the implications of the directive.

“While Allied does not manufacture or design products, many of the components we sell end up in products sold in the European Union,” says Lee Davidson, president of Allied Electronics. “Very soon, our customers will want to know if the products they spec into their designs are ‘RoHS compliant.’ It will be our job to make sure that they have easy access to this information.”

One potential dilemma that distributors like Allied can expect to come out of the RoHS directive is the various transition plans of their suppliers. For example, some manufacturers have introduced new lead-free designs to existing parts, while others plan to identify compliant products by package labeling.

“The challenges of transition are substantial. Distributors and manufacturers will have to work very closely to ensure the migration to RoHS complaint product is seamless to the customer,” says Davidson. “We have taken a stance that we will be an industry leader in providing the latest information on RoHS for both our customers and our suppliers. We want everyone to have the information they need so our customers can make the right decisions when buying products from us.”

At Allied, multi-functional project teams have been established to sort through the EU directives and to work with its 300+suppliers to come up with solutions, in hopes that this approach will minimize any disruption in the supply chain and to customers.

Cutting Corners To Make Your IC Sample Date Could Cost Your Production Ramp Plan

Many mixed signal product development teams face the dilemma of eliminating activities to meet their target sample dates due to project schedule slippage. The result is the sample dates come back in line by shipping a design that has not been validated to meet the quality required for production. Everyone begins to feel like the project is on track until you hit characterization and the production ramp date begins to slip away due to design margin issues that are exposed too late in the product phase. You must be planning the sample strategies and trade offs up front in your design process, before you need them.

Chandler, AZ (PRWEB) May 22, 2021 –- In many cases the desire to meet a sample date milestone is what drives the design team’s focus, energy and decisions. If the project is running behind schedule, the pressure on the team to recover the planned sample date increases. This will invariably lead to cases where some of the validation activities in place to produce a high quality design fall by the wayside. The first picks that usually are cut are the Design for Manufacturability (DFM) type tasks, since they are mainly validation steps. By cutting these type of tasks a small risk is added to samples and a much larger risk, although not always an obvious risk, is added to your production ramp.

Focusing the design team to do “whatever it takes” to get back on track for the project sample dates could easily extend the production schedule. Once forced into a decision of what to do about getting your sample date back on track, without benefit of prior planning of your sample strategy, the key options come down to the trimming of already planned validation activities. This leaves you open for qualification issues that might be created by eliminating specific validation steps that were put in place to guarantee a solid, high margin design. It should be apparent that the exclusion of the intended validation steps would increase the risk of another silicon spin and therefore the planned production schedule.

What can be done to prevent being forced to forgo design quality? It would not seem prudent to risk a production ramp delay in today’s market place. The choice to favor production schedule may leave you with a sample date that would lose the business. It is essential that you have developed a strategy for your sample requirements that does more than assume they just fall out of your first silicon spin. You must have a specific plan and design flow in place to cover your first samples to customers. You may wish to confer on the following items to stimulate the brainstorming of solutions for your sample strategy:

a) Enhance the management of customer spec closure and architecture work to minimize the timeline from concept to design kickoff. This essentially speeds up your design front end.

b) Partition validation into two phases. Sample validation for tapeout and then follow up with DFM validation while 1st silicon in FAB.

c) Parallel up the validation steps that take place prior to 1st silicon tapeout.

d) Alternatives to samples such as hardware emulation or modeling allowing the customer to continue their system development without the need for silicon samples.

The best times to look at the design flow is before you’re in the execution phase of a project and are faced with a possible task pruning decision. What is most important is that you do not get into a position where you are forced to eliminate DFM tasks in the interest of saving your sample plan date. That may very well cost you an entire silicon spin on your path to production ramp. This would delay your time to revenue by 10-12 weeks!

Many applications where fused terminal blocks are used also feature a small clear polythene bag attached to the panel or enclosure containing spare fuses for the various circuits within. Engineers and technicians will be familiar with searching through a selection of fuses to find the correct replacement. With Camden's new CFTBN fused terminal block, such inconveniences are a thing of the past. The correct spare fuse is safely stored at the point where it is required, becoming available when the fuse carrier is removed from the terminal block.

The new CFTBN also features redesigned square screw turrets with thicker walls that strengthen the overall construction of the terminal blocks. Compared with previous generation products, the CFTBN terminal blocks offer exceptional strength.

Camden has also enhanced the design of the fuse carrier so that finger grip is improved. This makes insertion and removal of fuses easier than with previous generation components. The fuse carrier is also polarised to ensure that fuses are inserted properly and to protect fuse contacts within the terminal blocks from damage. The carrier also provides positive feedback that the fuse has been inserted fully.

CFTBN fused terminal blocks are available with a one- to five-pole terminal strip plus 5x20mm fuseholder to IEC257. Meeting IEC creepage and clearance requirements (8mm), the CFTBN’s specifications include IP20 finger protection, 4mm² cable entry and 10mm fixing pitch. Screw/dust protection covers are also available as an option.

Camden Electronics’ original CFTBN fused terminal block module was the first of its kind to get full UL approval opening up new markets for the component. The connector simplifies manufacturing of products such as security equipment, emergency lighting, power supplies, luminaires and fluorescent fittings with the terminal strip featuring an integrated fuse holder. In addition, customising the connector is a simple task enabling users to produce multi-pole fused units thanks to the terminal block's unique interlocking system. The addition of a spare fuse option makes the new CFTBN terminal block an even more convenient product and provides users with additional flexibility.

The standard terminal options of single to five-pole terminal strips are rated at 440V and the fuse module is uniquely able to take glass or ceramic bodied types. Individual fuse modules can easily be interlocked onto the standard fused part of the block allowing construction of any number of additional fused lines, as required. Standard versions cover one to five poles with earth screw and without wire protectors. Additional versions encompass blocks with or without earth and with or without wire protectors on all poles.

It's just a matter of doing those things that win the most desirable candidates to your team. "It really is that simple," says Scott Love, founder of the Construction Leadership Institute, a retained executive search firm specializing in senior level recruiting for construction companies. "But the problem is that most people never take the time to find out what really motivates the candidate."


Love says that there are four critical steps to make your company more appealing to the talent that everyone else is chasing after. In an increasingly competitive market, you need to think out of the box and focus on how you can serve the prospective candidate pool.

1. Get clear on the uniqueness of your organization and the opportunities within it. Love states that most construction companies miss the mark when it comes to this because they've never taken time to look at their hiring process from a marketing perspective. "Marketing is all about differentiation, so you need to find out what is different about your firm and what is different about the experience that a recent graduate or seasoned manager will feel when working there." Love recommends talking to existing managers and employees and getting their feedback through confidential surveys. Ask them why they joined, why they stay, and if there was one bit of information that they could pass on to a prospective candidate, what would it be?

2. Find out from the candidate what motivates him or her beyond compensation and show how your company can deliver on those desires. Find out what the top three things are that they would need to see in an opportunity (outside of compensation) and present your prospective position in those terms. Love sums it up by saying, "Don't sell your company based on why you joined it or why you find it appealing. Instead, find out why someone else would join it, and show them that your opportunity will help them achieve what they really want. Remember, it's not about you. It's about them."

3. When the candidate transitions, stay with them. At the time they turn their notice in, they are susceptible to changing their minds and taking a counteroffer to. "That's the most critical time of the whole deal and the time that they need to build positive relationships with as many future colleagues as possible." Love says that the mistake most employers make is to assume that the deal is closed when the candidate accepts the offer. "It's not closed until they show up, and even then sometimes it's not really closed."

4. Love says to tell stories of how a future colleague is experiencing what that prospect wants to experience. Tell success stories which validate that the motivations of the candidate can be realized within your company. "Credibility is built on specificity. If you back it up with factual evidence, such as stories, then it's not your opinion but an irrefutable fact. If you tell them your opinion, then it loses credibility. But if you say, 'Let me tell you about one of our senior level executives and how he is doing what you are telling me is important to you,' then you win them over completely."

The series includes a high-definition 8.4” LCD, memory purge, the ability to save up to 2000 waveforms into history memory, along with advanced display capabilities.

The DL9000 series starts at $10,995, a considerable value compared to high-performance oscilloscopes that have less memory yet are 25-65% more expensive.

High-speed waveform acquisition is provided by two main components: The A/D conversion section includes cascade-type 2.5 GS/s 8-bit converters that are run in parallel and designed for low power consumption. The signal processing circuits generate display data and also perform high-speed waveform and parameter calculations.

Unlike oscilloscopes that offer fast acquisition modes but place limits on the amount of memory used in such modes, the DL9000 Series allows engineers to choose as much memory as necessary for a given measurement.

The series provides four-channel, parallel signal processing for board-level testing via a proprietary Advanced Data Stream Engine (ASDE). As such, the DL9000 can perform 9,000 acquisitions/sec/channel @ 12.k word memory using one or more channels; with all four channels this is equivalent to 450 million points/sec.

Thousands of waveforms per channel can be simultaneously displayed through a new waveform accumulation system. This function utilizes the History memory of the oscilloscope to provide valuable insight into occurrences on other channels during an anomaly, along with the ability to replay or manually step through acquisitions to find the cause.

The images displayed through accumulation on the oscilloscope can be viewed in multi-color or single-color-multi-intensity modes, where the color or intensity changes based on the frequency of waveform events. These images provide visual information about waveform behavior over time, similar to older analog models.

Local hardware stores sold out in a matter of hours. Many desperate homeowners had no choice but to buy overpriced professional-grade generators with features they'd never use. And some customers waited up to four months to receive their backordered generator.

"By the time Ivan and Jean hit, it was impossible to find a reconditioned generator, let alone a new one," say Hoch.

The Calm Before the Storm
Climatologist William Gray recently revised his 2005 hurricane forecast, predicting 13 named tropical storms in the Atlantic, seven of which will become hurricanes, with three turning into major storms with winds clocking speed in excess of 111 miles per hour.

Generator manufacturers are working overtime to replenish their inventories. Many popular models are finally off backorder for the first time since last August.

According to Hoch, now is the best time to purchase an emergency generator in nearly a year.

"Generator prices are influenced by the simple economics of supply and demand," says Hoch. "The best time to buy is between power outages, when supplies are plentiful and promotions are prevalent."

Even reconditioned generators, which were impossible to find just a few months ago, are slowly becoming available. But don't expect the inventory to last long, warns Hoch.

Last year, millions of homeowners learned the importance of advanced emergency planning the hard way. This year, however, many homeowners aren't willing to wait for a tropical storm to develop before bracing for the worst.
