Singularity Design Celebrates 10 Years of Design Excellence

Singularity Design is proud to commemorate its first ten years of high-end professional design by giving away an Apple iPod Photo. Singularity has been providing distinctive design solutions to companies and organizations across the country since 1995.

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) March 31, 2005 - Singularity Design is proud to commemorate its first ten years of high-end professional design by giving away an Apple iPod Photo.

Singularity Design was founded in March of 1995 by entrepreneur Jeff Greenhouse with the goal of providing high quality graphic and multimedia design services. In 1996 Singularity expanded into the new medium of website design, bringing the same level of style and attention to detail from print and identity design into interactive and web design. As the importance of maintaining a web presence increased, Singularity proudly served numerous clients both in Philadelphia and across the country, including such notable names as Omaha Steaks, Covad Communications and Crown Cork & Seal.

While many of the beneficiaries of Singularity's expertise have been businesses and corporations, the company is most proud of its long history of support and involvement with not-for-profit entities. The American Red Cross, the University of Pennsylvania, LibertyNET and the American Cancer Society are some of the entities that have utilized Singularity Design to further their communication, fundraising and development efforts.

In recent years, Singularity has expanded its service offering to provide a full range of online and interactive solutions including database development and web application programming, interactivity via Macromedia Flash and, more recently, Flash-based games providing a wealth of branding and marketing possibilities.

In order to celebrate this important milestone, Singularity Design is giving away a 30GB Apple iPod Photo to one winner, drawn at random from those who register at http://www.singularitydesign.com/?ql=anniversary by May 1, 2005.

As Singularity enters its second decade, the focus remains on creating effective, compelling designs and treating each client as an individual with unique needs and goals.

Atair Aerospace Becomes the First Company in the World to Demonstrate Flocking and Swarming Capabilities on Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

For the first time in history, autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have flown using flocking and swarming algorithms. “Flocking and Swarming” are two words used interchangeably to refer to modeled flight that is biologically inspired by the flight of flocking birds and swarming insects.

BROOKLYN, NY (PRWEB) March 31, 2005 -- “For the first time in history, autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have flown using flocking and swarming algorithms,” reports Daniel Preston, chief executive and lead engineer for Atair Aerospace, Inc. (Atair AS).

“Flocking and Swarming” are two words used interchangeably to refer to modeled flight that is biologically inspired by the flight of flocking birds and swarming insects. The capability of biological systems to autonomously maneuver, track and pursue evasive targets in a cluttered environment is vastly superior to any engineered system.

Atair AS is pioneering the development and implementation of flocking and active collision avoidance algorithms on UAVs. Atair AS’ technology was first tested December 16–18 in Eloy, Ariz. where two fleets of five Onyx™ systems were airdropped and successfully flocked in tight formation to target. Onyx systems are autonomously guided parafoil systems (UAV gliders) designed to allow military cargo to be parachuted from high altitude and horizontal stand off and land accurately on target. Atair AS developed the Onyx system under contract with the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center - Natick. Onyx systems can be dropped at up to 35,000 ft altitude, autonomously glide for 30+ miles, and land on a preprogrammed target—accurate to about 150 feet.

The importance of flocking and active collision avoidance towards the application of precision resupply is critical. With this technology multiple systems (50+) can be deployed in the same airspace, guiding to one or multiple targets without possibility of mid air collisions.

Atair AS’ inventive technology has advanced the state of the art in guidance and control systems. This technology will open the door for advanced autonomous flight capabilities on a variety of UAV platforms from fixed wing to rotorcraft, with applications from sensor and munitions delivery to surveillance.

Atair Aerospace, Inc. is a Brooklyn-based defense company dedicated to modernizing military and industrial airdrop techniques through its range of innovative autonomously guided parachute systems and UAVs.

Vocal Technologies To Introduce Ultra-Low Cost ATA Designs

Selection of Reference Designs Include Highly Reliable VoIP ATA at $6.00 Unit Cost; Full Motion IP Videophone ATA Design at $30.00 Unit Cost Also Now Available

Buffalo, NY (PRWEB) March 31, 2005 -- Vocal Technologies, Ltd. today announced it will be demonstrating a new range of high performance, ultra-low cost Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) reference designs. Among the products to be introduced are breakthrough voice and full-motion videophone designs so cost-effective, they allow suppliers and/or service providers to offer resulting equipment at little or no cost to end users.

Vocal’s use of unique, patent-pending algorithms allows equipment suppliers to leverage DSP (Digital Signal Processor) resources, thereby eliminating the need for an additional RISC processor. The reduced component count results in significant savings; Vocal’s 1x0 ATA, for example, boasts a Bill of Materials (BOM) of just $6.00 per unit, while a full-motion videophone ATA can be manufactured for just $30.00 per unit.

“Vocal is re-defining the ATA field, making VoIP cost effective for both suppliers and end users,” said John Blume, CEO of Vocal Technologies. “We believe innovative ATA technology that radically reduces manufacturing cost is a key to enabling the new age of widespread VoIP. Once manufacturers and service providers examine these groundbreaking designs for themselves, the potential for accelerated VoIP roll-out will become evident.”

Vocal’s design portfolio also includes a 2x2+1 solution that supports two telephone lines, two Ethernet ports and a PSTN life-line port for automated voice service switching in case of a power outage or network disconnection.

All Vocal products use the rapidly emerging IP telephony standard Session Initiation Protocol (SIPv2) as well as multiple advanced codecs to optimize ATA performance.

Mydeo Brings Streaming Technology Home

A new online service provides the missing link for home moviemakers and small businesses. Mydeo makes it easy and cheap to share your videos over the Internet with family, friends and customers.

(PRWEB) March 29, 2005 -- British entrepreneurs are launching a new service aimed at taking video streaming technology into the mainstream.

“Mydeo provides the missing link for home moviemakers and small businesses” says co-founder Cary Marsh who set up the company following a grant for technical innovation from the Department for Trade and Industry’s Small Business Service (SBS) programme that looks to encourage innovation in England. “So many homes have broadband access, digital cameras and experience in sharing photos that video is a natural step. People spend hundreds of pounds on digital video cameras, then the footage stays on tapes on shelves - people should be showing the footage off! Streaming technology is by far the best way to do this but until now there has been no service available that makes proper streaming technology accessible and affordable for home moviemakers”

While the business to business streaming market was burgeoning, with Investor Relations webcasting emerging as the killer app, the words ‘consumer’ and ‘streaming’ in the same sentence would have analysts and investors running a mile.

Mydeo believes that in 2005, with the accelerating uptake of broadband, the time is now right and there is a space for this technology in the hearts of the consumer but, crucially, as the content owner and publisher rather than as the pay-per view customer.

Traditionally, buying streaming media hosting has been a painstaking process. For the SME it might mean calling up salespeople at networks and negotiating quotas of storage and bandwidth. This would normally be coupled with an obligation to sign up for many months service in order to get the right price. For the home moviemaker the options were limited – try to find a biz-to-biz service selling packages at affordable prices, or try an ‘online album’ service where you can upload your videos along with your pictures and invite your viewers to visit the album site to see your footage with no guarantee of quality.

“Mydeo however, is about giving the user the ability to do the entire process online and then the freedom to do what they want with the links to their movie files.” Commented Marsh. Mydeo users can upload and pay online then simply generate a link to their file to do with as they wish. This allows users the freedom to put links to files on their own websites or in emails etc. The site also offers tools for those new to streaming; such as creation of a customised HTML emails, and automatic generation of code for embedding files in web pages.

Mydeo uses the Speedera content delivery network (CDN) for global storage and delivery together with Speedera’s secure streaming product to guarantee security for Mydeo users’ content. This means that the humble home video maker can enjoy the quality and reliability of a world-leading delivery network, which they would never have been able to purchase as an individual.

The Mydeo payment model is also simple, and unique in that there is no reference to megabytes or gigabytes of storage or delivery. Mydeo users pay to upload their movies based on the length of the clip and the number of viewers they expect. For example, Mydeo’s basic package, ideal for friends and family, is £3 per minute of video and the file can be viewed up to 200 times. As Cary points out “If you sent a one minute video taken on your mobile phone to a friend’s mobile it would cost you almost £3 to deliver to just one person!“.

Businesses too can benefit from the easy-to-use service, where rates work out still well below the usual cost of hosting contracts. For example Mydeo’s high package offers up to 10,000 views for £75 per minute of video – ideal for viral marketing campaigns and online advertising.

“Our goal when creating the Mydeo website was to design and build for the consumer, that means using navigation and design styles that consumers are familiar with from using their favourite sites” Says co-founder Iain Millar, who’s background has been in delivering award winning websites for blue-chip companies. “This does not mean the site is not suitable for the SME – it just means it’s simple and intuitive for everyone to use. We built the site to take the user from start to finish online. Users can therefore upload their material, make a secure payment, generate their own code and links, and view their statistics online - content can go from your camera to the other side of the world in minutes.”

“The response to the service and the feedback has been great so far.” Says Marsh “Based on this feedback we are already looking at introducing new packages later this year including packages for additional formats such as Quicktime as well as higher resolution packages for streaming rushes or other content that requires higher definition viewing”

Irvine, CA (PRWEB) March 30, 2005 -- iPodlounge (www.ipodlounge.com), the world's top independent iPod information resource, is pleased to announce immediate global distribution of 2005’s first buyers' guide to iPods and iPod accessories. The 102-page iPodlounge Buyers' Guide 2005 (Spring/Summer) is now available for free download by all of iPodlounge's over 2 million readers.

iPodlounge – the world’s leading independent resource of iPod information – has released for free download its updated 2005 compendium of iPod and iPod accessory reviews. The iPodlounge Buyers’ Guide 2005 is an Adobe Acrobat (PDF) magazine version of the popular iPodlounge website, www.ipodlounge.com, the acclaimed iPod user community named one of Time Magazine’s 50 Best Websites in 2004. You can download the Guide at www.ipodlounge.com/buyersguide/.

“Last year’s holiday Buyers’ Guide was heralded as the best iPod resource available anywhere,” said Jeremy Horwitz, Editor-in-Chief of iPodlounge.com and the Guide. “and we’ve outdone it for our Spring/Summer issue. In one fast download, readers get a complete guide to all things iPod: concise summaries of the over 300 iPod reviews we’ve authored since the 2001 release of the iPod, plus exclusive first looks at new accessories such as the first iPod FM radio tuner and improved LCD-based FM transmitters.”

iPodlounge’s web site reaches over 2 million readers per month, all of whom will have immediate free access to the Buyers’ Guide 2005 through two distribution channels: direct download and peer-to-peer file sharing networks. Like the iPodlounge web site, the Buyers’ Guide is advertiser-supported. “Our free Guide reaches more actual and prospective iPod owners than any other iPod-related publication,” said Dennis Lloyd, Publisher of iPodlounge.com and the iPodlounge Buyers’ Guide 2005. “Considerably over 300,000 people downloaded the last Guide directly from us, and since we use the free PDF format, no purchase or proprietary software is necessary to get our complete magazine immediately after publication.”

iPodlounge has covered the iPod since its quiet release in 2001. “The growth of iPodlounge has been staggering,” said Lloyd, reflecting on the site’s repeated doubling of its membership every six months. We’re the only major publication that has reported on the iPod platform since before it was a phenomenon and kept up with the introduction of every new iPod and accessory. That’s why iPodlounge today remains Google’s number one-ranked independent iPod site.”

The 102-page Buyers’ Guide includes a wide-ranging collection of iPod news, previews, reviews, and features. Among the Guide’s highlights are:
The Beginners’ Guide to iPod: If you’ve been thinking of buying an iPod, or trying to convince a friend to join the revolution, this is the place to start. Across 15 pages, we tackle every question a new iPod user might have, then introduce you to the worlds of iPod accessories and the people who love them: members of the iPodlounge community.

Sneak Peeks: An unparalleled 12-page look at the future of the iPod, with pages devoted to new car connection accessories, Bluetooth and other wireless accessories, gadgets such as an iPod video player and FM radio tuner, cool new cases, and much, much more.

CompAmerica Opens its PC-Giants.com Portal, Offering Over 250,000 PC & Consumer Products at Exception Discounts, for Those Wanting Lowest Prices and Top Puality Products

In conjunction with famed CNET.com, CompAmerica has opened a new electronic discount b2b, b2c computer and consumer electronics store, PC-Giants.com. The new portal is said to be designed to make it far easier for shoppers in corporate America and consumers to find computer products at low prices, backed by exceptional service offerings.

(PRWEB) March 28, 2005 -- CompAmerica's new PC Giants store (http://www.pc-giants.com also known as "PCG" for short) does many things it says are unavailable from giant retailers and b2b companies like Best Buy, Tiger Direct and CompUSA.

Janice Drescher, a company marketing spokesperson, met with industry trade publications on Monday to demonstrate some of those features.

MS. Drescher Reviews http://pc-giants.com

"In opening pc-giants.com, CompAmerica has built a very unique enterprise whose prices for PC hardware and software, LCD TVs, Cameras, Accessories, Add-ins, and Memory are lower than virtually all of the other major retailers and e-tailers. We're selling First Run PC Products, that means: instead of left-over or out of date products as found in most stores, pc-giants.com provides products that are literally right off the shipping dock of the original manufacturer(s)."

"pc-giants.com has over 1000 brand names from which to choose: from IBM to Microsoft to Red Hat to HP to Cisco to CompAmerica to Xerox to Zoom to 3Com to Intel. pc-giants.com has tens of thousands of products that you can add-in to your favorite Dell, Micron, Toshiba or about any other brand PC, Laptop or Server. pc-giants.com has a Memory Configuration Tool (top left on every page) that allows you to select any product, and price and size memory panels for that product almost instantly. All you do is let your fingers do the talking."

"pc-giants.com was designed in such a way as to make it very easy to find what you want. It has well over a quarter million different products in the store. And finding these products is as easy as Google."

"One simply presses search after entering a product by brand name or manufacturer or by the brand name manufacturer whose PC product you want to add it to, or by model, or by type, or you can search by Category. Then, once you are in the general area you want (it will tell you how many choices), one simply drills down using pull down choices which we pre-fill in for you so you know what the choices are related to your original search. You can save whatever you find in favorites lists, and compare products two or more at a time. And for each product, we also provide a link that we fill with related products. So if you find a printer, you can also link to it's toners, cables and paper trays, without getting lost."

"Every product has a general summary, a detailed product specification, and color pictures. And, we offer you best pricing and live availability so you always know if we have it in stock, or how long it will take before we do."

"Opening an account is trivial, simply provide us basic information and you're in! From then on you get your own PC-Giants Desktop to use."

"And we provide a shopping cart that is so easy it phenomenal. We keep records of your purchases, price quote requests and RFPs, any warranties or extended warranties, and all your shipping traffic. You can find out when it will get to you, and how to get it fixed if it ever breaks, and look at your expenditures on a daily, weekly or month at a time basis."

"And, on most products, we also provide Extended Warranties that are so inexpensive, it's really quite amazing!"

"Industry analysts have believed for a long time, that a practical approach to companies, government and individuals buying systems, components, communications devices and consumer electronics across the web, when done properly, is the least expensive and most reliable means to determine what product to buy."

"But today," added Drescher, "too many companies are simply liquidating excess and left over inventory, or undesirable models at reduced prices. That leads to shortened lifespan, and mediocre component performance. We have created a portal where you can obtain literally any product there is right from a short supply line that leads back to the manufacturer directly. You needn't worry that the product isn't original, each one is. And unlike our competitors, we stand behind the products with unlimited 24x7 Tech Support by phone and web, onsite installation service around the globe, return and repair assistance, and exceptional site design."

General Information
http://pc-giants.com is an original CompAmerica electronic computer store designed to facilitate provisioning of companies and individuals with the latest computer and consumer technologies. The company indicated it would be continuing to expand it's store with additional brands, such as it's recent addition of HP and COMPAQ Direct products, and products from hundreds of other companies.

CompAmerica.com is a computer manufacturer and contract services provider, who also offers an enormous repertoire of products through pc-giants.com so that it's customers can buy better products for less, and get support for them, said a company spokesperson.

"We do not have faith in most retailers and in most of our competitors, since they simply do not provide technical support the way we do, and since they do not go onsite to install and service systems and components the way we do. We provide anything from remedial service to high level consulting with our products. We believe everyone should. There's been a steady brain drain in the computer industry and it reflects in the clumsy way most businesses are forced to buy and use computer technology: their IT guys are at a singular disadvantage," said company president Dr. Jack A. Shulman.

He added: "We intend to change all that by raising the standard to nothing less than fully supportive consultative service, 24x7 tech support and onsite installation, service and remediation. It's the only way we can help Corporate America and individuals use technology the way it was meant to. And then, computers will truly serve business, government and the individual, rather than hanging around their necks like a 'wounded albatross'."

"We also support long term replenishment agreements, which include supplying software, networking and hardware for an entire business, installing and maintaining and upgrading it, and replacing it with next generation editions, right through the pc-giants.com store. We can keep an entire enterprise in tip top shape, no matter who their vendor is, even if it is a vendor whose products are not listed," added company vice president John R. Davis, "We know our customers can no longer afford to keep excessively large staffs around to maintain systems, and don't want to have to distract their own efforts trying to keep pace with Microsoft, IBM, or any other major brand. That's our job, and we believe we do it better than any other company in the world."

CompAmerica.com is located in Cranford, NJ and supplies products from 36+ warehousing locations around the USA and Canada. The company also manufactures PCs in New York State and California, Laptops in California and New Jersey and Server products in Indiana and California, in addition to distributing other brands through pc-giants.com.

The company can be reached at 888-275-2771, or on the web at http://compamerica.com. CompAmerica's own award winning product line is backed by a 5 year standard limited warranty, and optional extended warranty on mobil products up to 4 years in duration covering parts and labor. It also offers extended warranties up to 3 years on most of the products it sells through pc-giants.com, and offers facilities insurance programs to provide for catastrophic loss, bonding and surety.

pc-giants.com is a trademark and service mark of CompAmerica.

New Excelsior JET 3.7 Focuses on J2SE 5.0 and Parallelism

Excelsior JET 3.7 enables software developers to improve performance and hinder decompilation of their Java applications by converting them into optimized native executables running directly on hardware. This release focuses on J2SE 5.0 API support, parallel execution on multi-CPU systems and code performance improvements.

Novosibirsk, Russia (PRWEB) March 24, 2005 -- Excelsior, LLC, a Russian vendor of software development tools, has announced today the general availability of the latest edition of its flagship product, Excelsior JET 3.7. Designed to improve performance and hinder reverse engineering of Java applications through ahead-of-time (AOT) compilation, Excelsior JET now supports the latest version 5.0 of the J2SE API, and its new runtime library is optimized for execution on parallel hardware.

About Ahead-Of-Time Java Compilation
Ahead-Of-Time (AOT) compilation, the distinctive core feature of Excelsior JET, enables developers to maximize performance of their Java applications by transforming them into conventional binary executables that run directly on hardware. At the same time, Excelsior JET fully supports Java dynamic class loading facilities through provision of a redistributable Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler, so it is a complete Java Virtual Machine implementation.

A nice side effect of AOT compilation is the application's improved resistance to reverse engineering, achieved without the performance penalties inherent to Java bytecode obfuscation.

New in Excelsior JET 3.7
Based on customer feedback, support for J2SE 5.0 API enhancements is the most anticipated feature in Excelsior JET 3.7. Excelsior engineers have also made numerous achievements in application performance over the previous version, particularly in string handling and data processing involving 64-bit operations, such as encryption.

Excelsior JET 3.7, Professional Edition introduces a new runtime library that is optimized for parallel execution. It enables concurrent memory-intensive applications, such as Java servers, to fully utilize the computing power of today's multiprocessor systems and the upcoming dual-core chips.

"Historically, we have been positioning Excelsior JET as a solution for acceleration and protection of desktop applications and low-end Java servers," said Dmitry Leskov, Excelsior's Director of Marketing. "But our customers have discovered that it may be used, with much success, to improve the throughput of their large-scale enterprise Java applications, and demanded better support for high-performing multiprocessor hardware."

The new Excelsior JET runtime library is available in three flavors tuned for different application types and hardware configurations:
- The Desktop Runtime is optimized for use in applications typically running on conventional desktop and notebook computers, such as rich clients.
- The Workstation Runtime is best suited for technical client applications such as visualization and engineering design, which often run on high-end workstations.
- The Server Runtime enables highly concurrent server-side applications to make the most of multi-CPU servers.

The runtime library found in the previous versions of Excelsior JET is also available under the name of Classic Runtime.

Visit http://www.excelsior-usa.com/jetlatest.html for the full list of new features and changes in Excelsior JET 3.7.

Excelsior JET 3.7 System Requirements and Interoperability
The minimum hardware requirements for Excelsior JET 3.7 are Pentium III 800MHz CPU, 256MB of RAM, and 200MB of disk space, with to 650MB extra required temporarily during setup. 512MB of RAM is recommended for compiling J2SE 5.0 projects. Graphical tools need display resolution of 1024x768x256colors, otherwise command-line tools may be used.

Excelsior JET 3.7 for Windows runs on Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 98. Excelsior JET 3.7 for Linux requirements are 2.4 level kernel, glibc 2.2.5, and either LinuxThreads 0.9 or NPTL 0.29, or higher versions. Excelsior JET 3.7 interoperates with Sun Java 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition, versions up to and including 1.5.0_02.

For details, see http://www.excelsior-usa.com/jetsysreq.html

Availability and Pricing
Excelsior JET 3.7 is available today. To download a free evaluation copy, please visit: http://www.excelsior-usa.com/jetdleval.html

Excelsior JET is priced per developer seat, and can be purchased directly from the Excelsior Web Store at: http://www.excelsior-usa.com/store/ and through authorized resellers. List prices range from $150 for Excelsior JET, Standard Edition with no service contract to $3,375 for a bundle that includes both Windows and Linux version of Excelsior JET, Professional Edition plus one year of Premium Support and Maintenance services. Users of previous versions qualify for substantial upgrade discounts.

An introductory offer is in effect until April 15, 2004. For details, please visit: http://www.excelsior-usa.com/store/specials.html

Runtime license fees apply to production use and redistribution of applications that include Excelsior JET Workstation Runtime or Excelsior JET Server runtime.

A gadget cunningly disguised as a car alarm remote clandestinely switches off television sets by the simple press of a button now exists. Getting your hands on one of these and going for a pint could yet again become the social event that it was forty years ago – before the art of conversation was overcome by wide-eyed silence punctuated by disjointed applause and laughter.

The gadget with a moral dimension has a name with a biblical ring, and like the parting of the Red Sea it will silence the attention sapping scourge in any public area. When activated, the universal remote control with a mission will spend about a minute flashing out 209 different codes to turn off televisions, attacking the most popular brands first. There is an American-Asian model and a US, Asian & European one, using different codes.

This Super Universal US, Asian & European Remote Control offers Safe. Effective. Fun. Hangs on your keychain.

Directions for using your Super Universal US, Asian & European Remote Control:

Point it at a TV set Press the button (no need to hold the button down).

Keep pointing it at the TV until the TV turns off which may take up to 69 seconds).

Super Universal US, Asian & European Remote Control is very much like any other tv remote control. It is harmless to televisions. It is harmless to humans and other animals (in fact, it is quite beneficial, since it turns televisions off).

Ambient Devices Launches Wireless DataCasting Kit

Ambient and Microsoft lead the trend to display glanceable information.

CHICAGO, IL (PRWEB) March 24, 2005 -- Ambient Devices today announced the launch of the DataCasting Kit, radically simplifying the ability for consumer products companies to embed Internet information in their products. The DataCasting Kit, about the size of a matchbox, may be embedded into virtually any product enabling it to receive wireless signals from the nationwide Ambient Information Network.

Innovative companies, including home appliance manufacturers, furniture makers or even apparel designers will use the wireless Internet DataCasting Kit to launch products that display various types of online information, such as weather forecasts, stock trends, traffic congestion or health information.

“Ambient’s differentiators include coverage and costs,” said Alan A. Reiter, president of Wireless Internet & Mobile Computing consulting. “The Ambient Information Network represents one of the largest, if not the largest, datacasting networks in the United States. The large number of transmitters in Ambient’s mature wireless network typically provides better coverage and in-building penetration than an FM subcarrier network like Microsoft MSN Direct.”

David Rose, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Ambient Devices, says, “The DataCasting Kit is a quantum leap forward for manufacturers to quickly and affordably embed Internet information in a new product, be it a clock radio, MP3 player, refrigerator, car, or clothing. Over the course of 2005 and 2006, dozens of companies will be using the DataCasting Kit to prototype and launch new products.”

Distinguished Engineer Dick Berry, IBM User Engineering, said glanceable technology offers an intriguing way to integrate information into the user's physical environment. “Initial setup and ongoing configuration will have to be extremely simple — as easy as setting the time on a clock. It will be interesting to watch the adoption rate of these devices over the coming months.”

A beta version of the DataCasting Kit was used by a large white goods manufacturer to rapidly prototype an Internet connected kitchen appliance. “Within three days the product was receiving and displaying data from the Ambient Information Network.” says Ben Resner, Co-Founder and VP of Technology at Ambient.

The Ambient DataCasting Kit is now available. Please go to www.ambientdevices.com for more information.

Datacasting: A backgrounder

What is Datacasting?
Today, many consumer electronics manufacturers and major retailers want to deliver products which seamlessly use data from the Internet to offer enhanced functionality and services. The big question is: How will clock radios, watches, refrigerators and mobile devices receive Internet data?

The answer is datacasting. Think of it like a radio signal for many of the devices in your life. The data is already there, your devices just tune in.

Who are the major players in the datacasting space?
There are two companies today that are the most active in providing datacasting products and services: Ambient Devices and Microsoft Corporation through MSN Direct.

Ambient Devices, founded in 2001 as a spin-out from MIT’s renowned Media Lab, has pioneered the market for ‘glanceable’ devices – products which convey important information at-a-glance. Ambient Devices enables the physical environment to become an interface to digital information. Ambient has created a platform for developing these applications, as well as producing their own line of ambient products.

In May 2002, the company launched the best-selling Ambient Orb, named in the NY Times Magazines "Year in Ideas." Today the Ambient Orb, and Ambient Devices’ four other products are available in over 50 retailers including Neiman Marcus, the Museum of Modern Art, Amazon and Brookstone stores. This past holiday season, Radioshack Corp. debuted the Ambient powered Wireless Weather Forecaster, a $99 weather station that displays 5-day weather forecasts directly from Accuweather.com.

All Ambient products are bundled with wireless service for no monthly charge. Additional personalized channels are available for a small monthly fee.

Microsoft’s first product to use Datacasting was the SPOT smart wristwatch, announced in January 2003 and launched with licensing partners Fossil and Suunto in January 2004.. These watches deliver Internet data feeds similar to those offered by Ambient Devices – all on your wrist. The Smart Watch requires a service fee of approximately $10 per month.

Ambient and Microsoft are both pioneering what the research community calls “ubiquitous computing.” Ubiquitous computing is the global trend towards a lifestyle where the machine to machine delivery of important information is seamless and easily available -- requiring no keyboard, mouse, or computer screen. Instead, Internet data will be available to at-a-glance, from dozens of simple, everyday devices.

What infrastructure is used for Datacasting?
Both Ambient and Microsoft see a vast market for embedding Internet information in everyday objects, including wrist-watches, lamps, cars and clothing. Yet the technologies used by each company differ in important ways. The most important difference is the mechanism for sending data around the country.

Ambient leverages satellites and a frequency-aligned network of over 2000 pager transmitters redundantly broadcasting a wealth of data from the Internet. Each device on the Ambient network can receive signal from more than one tower, reducing dead spots and allowing the network to cover over 90% of the US population.

While standard paging technology carries some transmission costs, the company has overcome this issue through a proprietary micro-packetization algorithm (patent pending) which eliminates monthly service fees for broadcast data.

Microsoft uses FM radio subcarriers, which can listen to a single FM radio station antennae at a time. While Ambient’s datacasting network can listen to multiple towers overlapping to improve wireless coverage, the MSN Direct network must rely on existing FM radio station antennas in non-overlapping capacity. FM stations aren’t able to construct additional transmitters for the sole purpose of improving their data broadcasting coverage.

About Ambient Devices
Ambient Devices is radically changing how people receive information in their daily lives. Ambient extends the reach of digital information to a new category of wireless products using light, meters, and motion to communicate at a glance. Using technologies developed at the MIT Media Lab combined with principles of cognitive psychology, everyday products tune into a nationwide wireless network to keep you in touch with the information that matters to you most. WEEE Directive – Is Your Business Prepared?

A new free service has been launched to help businesses co-ordinate both the disposal and acquisition of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) across the UK.

(PRWEB) March 24, 2005 -- Under the EU's WEEE Directive, from August 2005, all UK businesses will be required, by law, to re-use and recycle 100% of their end-of-life electrical equipment. Failure to comply with this legislation will result in a fine or even imprisonment.

“The first problem businesses will encounter when trying to comply with the legislation is to find a WEEE recycler that matches all of their individual requirements. This could take days of searching for, and contacting recyclers for quotes. Our new and unique systems allow businesses to reduce search time to minutes rather than days.” – Lee Sykes - Director of Operations

The WEEE Recycling Directory is a unique website that contains two main areas. The first is the directory of WEEE recyclers across the UK and the second is the WEEE Tenders & Collections section.

The WEEE Recycling Directory ensures that users can quickly search for a recycler in their area by specifying the type of equipment, such as IT Equipment, Fluorescent tubes etc. and the location from which it is to be collected. Other specialist criteria can also be stipulated, for instance, to donate the equipment to charity or the requirement to wipe hard disks to military standards.

Visit http://www.weeedirectory.com for the latest information regarding how to comply with the WEEE Directive and to search for a WEEE recycler in your area.

Notes to Editor:
1. The WEEE Recycling Directory aims to provide a central resource and service for WEEE. To benefit both businesses and recyclers and to provide an environment where the recycling business can grow.
The WEEE Recycling Directory website is maintained by LJS Media, an independent organisation that creates website services. This enables LJS Media to offer the WEEE Recycling Directory service with no bias to any recyclers or businesses, enabling a business searching for a service to obtain the most competitive quote possible.
2. All of the services on the website are free of charge. The website is paid for through advertising.

Electric Pocket Updates Ringo, Ringtone Manager for Treo Smartphones, and Announces New "Vocal" Caller ID

Electric Pocket's Ringo application, the best selling ringtone manager for palmOne's Treo-brand smartphones, has been updated with new features that allow users to more quickly identify incoming callers and customize their user experience with high-resolution icons that leverage the vibrant screens of Treo 650 smartphones.

Wye Valley, UK (PRWEB via MobilityNewswire) March 22, 2005 -- Electric Pocket’s Ringo application, the best selling ringtone manager for palmOne's Treo-brand smartphones, has been updated with new features that allow users to more quickly identify incoming callers and customize their user experience with high-resolution icons that leverage the vibrant screens of Treo 650 smartphones. Further, the company announces EPSpeak, an add-on to Ringo that identifies incoming callers with a voice that verbally announces the caller’s name.

Since its inception, Ringo has enabled users to associate a picture or assign a ringtone to a caller or group of callers within the smartphone's Address Book. In response to requests from Ringo users, the newest version of Ringo allows users to add pictures for all incoming callers (regardless of whether or not the caller is listed in the Address Book).

Another new feature of Ringo permits its "Friends" function to use multiple phone numbers for each contact. Since most contacts in an Address Book have multiple phone numbers (work, home and mobile), this new feature makes it quicker to assign ringtones and pictures to a caller by not having to repeat the process for each phone number.

For those who want to be the "coolest" Treo user on the block, Electric Pocket’s new vocal caller ID is an essential Ringo add-on. For only US$9.95, Ringo users can identify incoming calls with a voice announcing the name of the caller, coupled with a personalized ringtone and on-screen graphic. Ringo’s voice feature gives Treo users the opportunity to be among the first to have such a vocal ID feature, regardless of the type of mobile phone being used.

"Ringo was the first Treo ringtone manager to associate pictures with callers, the first to enable users to assign favorite MP3 tunes to friends and family, and now the first to verbally identify callers by name," said Iain Barclay, Electric Pocket’s Chief Product Officer. "We enjoy being first out of the block with new smartphone products because that means our customers can be first to 'wow' their friends with features they won’t find anywhere else."

About Ringo
Ringo enables Treo smartphone users to establish customized ringtones or MP3 tunes and assign photographs to specific callers or caller groups. When the Treo user receives a new call, the incoming caller can be identified both by a customized ringtone and a picture or other icon. Ringtones can be installed from an SD card, purchased and downloaded "over the air" via a link to a dedicated online ringtone store, or composed with Ringo’s innovative Ringtone Mixer. Ringo is available from Electric Pocket’s web site at http://electricpocket.com for US$29.95.

Computer Donations and Recycling in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

The toxic time bomb of obsolete computers is being tackled by a new program. Electronic Recycling Association (E.R.A.), a non-profit organization. Convenient depot locations have opened throughout Edmonton to collect old computers for donation and recycling.

(PRWEB) March 22, 2005 -- Managing director Bojan Paduh, a young entrepreneur from Calgary said: "E-waste is the fastest-growing type of waste thrown out by corporations as the IT industry updates products faster and faster. A new PC is now obsolete in two years and millions of them end up on landfill waste sites each year."

Every computer contains about four pounds of lead and small quantities of deadly cadmium and mercury. Other hazardous materials used in computers include hexavalent chromium, PVC plastic. All of these contribute to the poisonous cocktail of heavy metals found on landfills.

E.R.A is launching a program associated major computer and electronics retailers in Edmonton. Locations such as The Brick, WestWorld Computers, BCOM, Acrodex, and many more will be participating in ERA’s depot program. Organizations and individuals can now conveniently drop off their old computers at any of the participating locations, for donation or recycling.
For a complete list of participating locations, please visit the ERA website at www.era.ca

The ERA has many depots around the city that are accepting items, and is also offering a pickup and disposal service to any company. For the next few months, all collections of computer equipment will be done at no charge to companies wishing to donate their old computers.

E.R.A has various solutions for disposing of old PCs. Recent PC's can be given to people who cannot afford new ones, such as elderly and poor, job training tools to the unemployed, or sold to developing countries. If PC's are too old to be reused, Electronic Recycling Association will pass them onto companies specializing in dismantling them and recovering many materials including small amounts of precious gold, silver and copper.

E.R.A's priority is to reuse as many PCs as possible. Mr Paduh explained: "Reuse means the hazardous materials are not being let loose to do their worst and less new raw materials need to be extracted from the earth to make the next generation of computers and other electronic goods.
