Skyrocketing Worldwide Sales of New Cell Phones Will Present a Significant Environmental Challenge for Years to Come

But the CEO of a company that recycles and re-markets old cell phones says people have options for dealing responsibly with their old phones.

OCALA, Fla. (PRWEB) July 28, 2021 -- With mobile phone sales projected to exceed one billion by 2009, the challenge of what to do with the old handsets they replace becomes more critical, the president of a company that recycles and re-markets old cell phones said today.

"We are already becoming more and more aware of the dangers of sending so many old cell phones to landfills, where they represent a serious pollution hazard," said James Mosieur, chief executive officer of RMS Communications Group Inc. "But the projections for new cell phone sales throughout the remainder of the decade are staggering – they tell us that we are going to have to be very serious about the environmental implications of electronic waste."

According to a study released by the research group Gartner, the cell phone is about to become the single most common consumer electronics device, with around 2.6 billion people using cell phones by the year 2009. Gartner projects that 1.04 billion cell phones will be sold in that year, compared to about 779 million sold this year.

"The mobile phone is the most prolific consumer device on the planet," said Ben Wood, a Gartner analyst.

Gartner's initial projection for 2005 was 29 million phones fewer than the 779 million figure. The company changed its projection upward because of stronger-than-expected sales, much of them driven by strong demand in developing markets and by consumers replacing old handsets with more sophisticated models.

While the sales projections are sobering from an environmental point of view, Mosieur is optimistic that pollution from e-waste need not become a serious problem as long as the public becomes increasingly aware of the options available for re-using and recycling old cell phones.

"While there is a huge market for new cell phones with all the latest features and capabilities, there is also a tremendous market throughout the world for used cell phones that may not have all the latest features but which are still serviceable and which provide wireless communications at low cost," Mosieur said. "That means many used cell phones have good market value and can be sold to companies like ours."

Mosieur's company pays cash for used cell phones. Phones that do not have market value are accepted anyway and are recycled in an environmentally responsible fashion.

Some of the used cell phones are donated to law enforcement agencies and social service agencies for use as 911 emergency phones.

Creative Materials Feeds Advances in Touch Screen Manufacturing

The use of touch screens has become prevalent in a wide variety of electronic applications: public information displays, retail and restaurant systems, customer self-service, control and automation systems, computer based training and assistive technology. As the price for touch screens has steadily dropped over the last decade, touch screens have been more and more commonplace.

Creative Materials’ 118-09A/B-187, 118-09A/B and 118-41 are electrically conductive, modified epoxy systems that stick well to anti-reflective coatings, ITO coated glass and PET. These inks meet stringent requirements for thermal cycling and thermal shock, while maintaining good adhesion.

“As I travel across the country, I am frequently asked about appropriate inks for anti-glare and ITO coated surfaces,” said Joe Morano, application-engineering manager at Creative Materials. “For touch screen applications, I often recommend our 118-09A/B-187, 118-09A/B and 118-41 because of their stability and excellent adhesion. With these choices, the engineer can pick the product that best suits his requirements for pot life and heat cure.”

Creative Materials’ 118-09A/B187 is a two-component, solvent resistant, electrically conductive ink, coating and adhesive. The B-187 cures at the lowest temperature and has a shortened pot life (4 hours). The combination of 118-09A and B-187 curing agent allows for curing at a temperature of 65C. This material is very resistant to scratching and creasing, translating into user benefits such as extended life of the touch screen and prevention of surface-to-surface contact and scuffing.

Creative Materials’ 118-09A/B is similar to the 118-09A/B-187, but has a longer pot life (4 days) at a slight adhesion compromise to anti-reflective coatings. Other applications include, but are not limited to: EMI/RFI shielding of polyimide flexible circuits, polymer thick film circuitry, membrane switches and bus bars on Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) sputtered surfaces.

CMI’s 118-41 is a one component version of the above. Because of its relatively high cure temperature, it can only be used where the substrate can be subjected to the cure temperature. This product features excellent adhesion to glass, polycarbonate, Kapton, and a variety of other substrates, and is very resistant to scratching and creasing.

BCD Semiconductor Manufacturing Limited Introduces High-Performance and Cost-Effective Motor Driver ICs

Feeding Full-Range of Dynamic Motor Driver ICs in Meeting Worldwide Customers’ Emerging Requirements

For instance, AM5668, a 5-channel motor driver circuitry with high integration and cost-effectiveness, is a premier choice to serve DVD players and high-end motor driver market nowadays. BCD Semi also released to the common market a dynamic motor driver IC, AM5954A, which consistently meets the emerging requirements of new type DVD players. AM5954A is fully compatible with BA5954 and can replace AZ5954 and AAI5954.

Microstaq Inventor Masters MEMS Flow Control

“The buzz word is that you want a ‘disruptive’ technology,” Fuller said. “Our technology is such that it has the potential to replace all solenoid control valves, which is a pretty big market.”

Fuller came to Microstaq in 2002 after a successful engineering career at TRW Automotive. While with TRW, Fuller was key in the invention and commercialization of antilock braking systems, now a product mainstay of TRW.

After some initial design work on microvalves at TRW Fuller joined Microstaq, where he is now successfully testing this all-silicon valve at the company’s Bellingham, Washington labs.

Microstaq’s valve is a silicon MEMS technology, which means that its internal moving parts will not wear out. It is a tiny silicon wafer the size of a button that controls the flow of liquids, mists and gases at high pressures, replacing traditional control valves larger than a spark plug. In automotive applications its lighter weight and smaller size will increase fuel economy and reduce power consumption in every car, truck and SUV that uses it.

Fuller thinks the microchip-sized valve will revolutionize the flow control industry. He has kept his eye on the future, finding his work exciting and groundbreaking, as well as challenging at times.

“I basically did it because I saw that the industry had developed solenoid valves to the point that they couldn’t be made more efficient,” he said. “My desire has always been to stay ahead of the research curve.”

Fuller has a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and was an aerospace photographic system repairman for the U.S. Air Force. He worked for Chrysler Introl Division in Michigan as a development engineer before moving on to Kelsey Hayes (now TRW) in the early 80s and then to Microstaq in 2002.

CoroWare Launches Conformance Test Labs Subsidiary

The new company will ensure interoperability for the mobile service robotics community.

The new socket is ideal for manual testing of devices with pitches down to 0.50 mm, in applications with speeds from 1 GHz to over 18 GHz, such as CSP, MicroBGA, DSP, LGA, SRAM, DRAM, and Flash devices.

The new RF socket provides minimal signal loss for higher bandwidth capability via a signal path of only .077” (1.95 mm). The socket’s overall size of 3.507” (89.08 mm) x 2.750” (69.85 mm) x 1.759” (44.68 mm) provides the maximum allowable space for load board components and connectors.

Solderless, pressure-mount compression spring probes allow the socket to be easily mounted to and removed from the test board. These gold-over-nickel compression spring probes screws leave very small witness marks on the bottom of the device solder balls, and are accurately located by two molded plastic alignment pins and secured with four stainless steel screws.

The 4-point spring probe crown on the new socket ensures “scrub” on solder ball oxides for reliable contact mating, and the pointed probe works with LGAs, MLFs and other socket types.

The compression spring probes are heat-treated beryllium copper alloy, plated with
30 µ” min. (0.75 µm) gold per Mil-G-45204 over 30 µ” min. (0.75 µm) nickel per QQ-N-290. The socket’s molded components are UL94V-0 PEEK and/or Ultem. All hardware is stainless steel.

Contact forces of the new center probe sockets are 9 g to 12 g per contact for 0.50 mm to 0.75 mm pitches, and 17 g to 20 g per contact for 0.80 mm pitches and larger. Operating temperature is -55°C to +150°C (-67°F to +302°F). Estimated contact life is over 500,000 cycles and contact self-inductance is 0.59 nH.

As with all Aries sockets, the new RF test socket is available in custom materials, platings, sizes and configurations to suit specific customer applications.

The settings are retained by the programmer even if the battery goes flat, so as many targets can be programmed as required. Once this is accomplished, the programmer is just connected to the PC and different settings are loaded for the next job, and so on as many times as needed.

This programmer has been used on production lines with one programmer for every job, each with a suitable label to eliminate any possibility of error, by unskilled staff without constant supervision. It has also been used to update equipment in the store room or at distributor’s premises when the firmware needs replacing, again without needing an engineer with a laptop. The keyfob and handheld programmers provide an alternative to PCs on the production line or visits by expensive engineers and mean that inexperienced staff or customers can do updates without risk or mistakes.

Analog IP Reuse – Don’t Ignore the Fear

Almost every organization has an analog IP reuse strategy in place today. The level of sophistication and success of IP reuse varies across organizations; while the desire to increase adoption of reusable IP is a certainty in any design group. In practice today, most organizations are unhappy with their level of analog reuse. Why isn’t this process working? If an IP re-users potential fear of reusing a block is not addressed, the most basic requirement for a successful strategy has not been considered.

Chandler, AZ (PRWEB) July 8, 2021 -- When it comes to analog reuse, an uncomfortable roadblock to success must be considered. The fear and uneasiness of a designer who is contemplating the use someone else’s work can be created from many sources. These may include: lack of understanding the tradeoffs that were made during design, what detailed validation strategy was completed and why, what the original designer was concerned about during their design implementation and, what limitations the original designer assumed for their design. Typical block (IP) level documentation does not normally cover these “touchy feely” attributes, leaving the end user to guess and/or recreate them for his or her own comfort. This lack of abstract information creates the “reuse fear”.

“Left unchecked, this fear creates a subtle wall to reuse that will present itself in many different forms”, says Jeff Jorvig, president of Jorvig Consulting. In many cases the reasons for not reusing will be based on a technical foundation that is justified by a lack of solid background information about the block. The pressure to reuse is driven by management resulting in designer’s fear of penalization for potential design errors due to block reuse. This scenario sets up a system where the design team will do whatever it takes to justify not using someone else’s work. Without providing what’s necessary to create confidence for reuse, the default decision will invariably be to develop the block from known previous work within the team.

“Getting a handle on the role of the IP reuse fear factor should be a top priority of any sharing initiative that is underway”, Jorvig continues. Without addressing this upfront, the usage of IP is sure come in at a disappointing level, despite how sophisticated the repository may be. The first priority must be what goes into the repository, not the repository itself.

What should be in a repository library to diminish reuse apprehension? Initially, an electrical spec is an obvious requirement, although this is only the beginning. It is vital to avoid a common belief that the electrical requirements are all that is necessary to enable the desired level of reuse. Original designer concerns, as well as other emotional attributes must be captured and become part of the reuse package to ensure security for the end user.

Achieving a winning IP reuse initiative requires an emphasis on minimizing reuse fear. Brainstorming with a team of potential end IP users with the intention of generating a documentation template to cover their needs is an essential step to fear elimination. In addition, listen to the re-users and strive to give them what they want. The extra effort will mean the difference between an IP library with quality designs that sits idle, or one that gets used.

NovAtel Inc. Receives Contract for WAAS-GUS Signal Generators

NovAtel Inc. NovAtel has been working with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Raytheon Company for the past two years to engineer and produce this new generation of key WAAS ground network and Ground Uplink System (GUS) equipment for Prime Contractor Lockheed Martin, under a contract from Raytheon Company first announced by NovAtel on November 5, 2003. The Signal Generator NovAtel has developed for this WAAS ground system - the WAAS GUS-Type 1 Signal Generator - is a high performance L1 and L5 signal generator designed for use in the ground uplink system of Space-Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS). The GUS Signal Generator is built with two independent L1 and L5 signal generators that precisely control the frequency and phase of L1 and L5 code and carrier.

The FAA determined that additional Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellite services for the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) were needed to provide the necessary coverage, availability and improved continuity of service to the aviation user. The GCCS Program was then awarded to Lockheed Martin for additional WAAS GEO satellites, with Raytheon receiving a subcontract from Lockheed Martin for the ground based signal generator subsystem.

The FAA's WAAS uses a widely dispersed ground-monitoring network to provide integrity continuity, availability and improved accuracy to the Global Positioning System (GPS) Standard Positioning System navigation signal. The system of precisely surveyed ground reference stations positioned across the conterminous US, as well as Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, is used to collect GPS satellite data. Using this information, WAAS generates signal error correction and integrity messages and then broadcasts these messages via Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites to specially enabled GPS receivers onboard aircraft. WAAS will support both en-route and vertical guidance (down to a 250 foot decision height) phases of flight for users with certified WAAS avionics. WAAS is also being used extensively in other applications requiring improved accuracy without a local base station, such as agriculture, GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and for marine use.

New Realtime IR Camera Makes Thermal Imaging Affordable for Design and Process Control Engineers

Using a Personal Computer for control and display, the innovative 221 infrared camera provides fast thermal data acquisition, analysis and storage at a fraction of the cost of other cameras.
