Smoking Cessation Devices Help Smokers Beat the Addiction
These keychain-sized, battery operated behavior modification tools can gradually wean smokers from the cigarette habit, making it easy to quit smoking.
(PRWEB) September 29, 2005 -- Some ex-smokers report that you can effectively alleviate the irritable effects of nicotine withdrawal by using smoking cessation devices. One such device is called the 'Linkman habit reversal tool', released early 2005 by Brady Development, Inc. in Avon, CT.
This battery-powered product can be worn as a pendant or carried on a keychain, and it's shaped like a small cigarette, so you can fidget with it while you're quitting smoking.
It's simple to use, and the logic is dead on. To use the Linkman, you double-click a clear button on one end to request permission to smoke. If you haven't waited long enough between cigarettes (10 minutes to start), this button blinks red, letting you know to fight the urge to smoke for a little while longer. There is no penalty for asking too early – the device simply says “not yet” with short red flashes.
If you double-click the button after waiting long enough, you get a solid green light. This is the device's way of granting you permission to smoke one cigarette. For each cigarette, this cycle repeats with a slightly longer waiting period. In this way, the device weans you gradually and systematically, allowing you to quit smoking within a few months of use.
“It was the only way for me to quit,” says JB Snyder, inventor. “I had tried everything. Nicotine gum kept me addicted to nicotine, and 'cold turkey' had me irritable even after 10 months. I was impossible to be around, so I started smoking again. Not so with the Linkman.”
"Of course it can't make you quit," says Snyder. "But if you want to quit, smoking cessation devices can help you fight your addiction like no other products can."
Made in the U.S.A. and patent-pending, the Linkman can be purchased on the World Wide Web at www.linkman.com. Price: $80. For more information, contact Brady Development, Inc. at PO Box 1465, Avon, CT 06001. Phone (860) 460-7289; Fax (309) 419-6494.

From Aircraft Aerodynamics to Improved Heart Implants
At first glance airplane wings and human hearts have little in common, but, say a team of European researchers, a technology used to measure airflow over wings can now be used to help keep hearts in working order.
(PRWEB) September 29, 2005 -- The researchers optimised a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system traditionally used to improve the aerodynamics of aircraft wings to make it capable of accurately measuring the effects of medical implants on blood flow. Their work will allow medical device manufacturers to improve the design of devices such as heart valves and pumps, and provide doctors with a way to detect – and ultimately correct - the side-effects that commonly afflict patients who receive implants.
“This system could revolutionise heart treatments,” says Fabrizio Lagasco, coordinator of the SMART-PIV project.
The SMART-PIV system - which combines the optimised PIV hardware with advanced image processing and numerical analysis software over a parallel computing subsystem - fills a gap in the heart device sector that has limited the efficiency of implants.
Though ultrasound scans allow doctors to view potential problems with the natural heart, as well as locally in the circulatory system, they fall short of providing a detailed analysis of the causes of problems related to blood flow when modified by artificial implanted devices. In the field of biomedical device design, experiments involving the implantation of medical devices into animals can prove that a device functions, but such in vivo trials are lengthy and costly as well as not always being indicative of the effects the implant will have in humans.
Complications, ranging from the minor to the potentially fatal, are widespread among patients who receive implants either as a long-term solution to a failing heart or as a temporary ‘bridge’ while they await a transplant. Though such implants play a vital role in prolonging the lives of people with cardiovascular disease, reducing their side-effects through improved in vitro design would undoubtedly increase patients’ quality of life and their chances of long-term survival. That is particularly true in the case of ventricular-assist devices (VADs), battery-operated pumps that support a failing left ventricle and help supply blood to the rest of the body. VADs are primarily used to buy patients time until a heart donor can be found, but even in a best case scenario they can currently only extend a patient’s life by up to two years and frequently just a few months.
By applying PIV technology in their development Lagasco expects it would be possible to greatly enhance their performance and grant patients more time to obtain a transplant.
“With so few donors available compared to the people who need new hearts the number of people with implants is only going to continue increasing,” notes Lagasco.
Indeed, cardiovascular disease is the principal cause of death in Europe, claiming around four million lives a year. “That is why we saw the need for this technology to be applied in the medical sector,” Lagasco says.
At the core of the project’s PIV system is miniaturised optical sensor technology using ultra-thin laser light sheets to capture images of the fluid dynamics of blood flowing through implanted devices. Numerical analysis is carried out on the images in a parallel computing subsystem allowing device designers or doctors to detect problems with the blood flow, such as high velocity gradients that can cause blood cell damage, or low velocity that could lead to thrombosis or coagulation.
Based on the results of trials, by employing parallel computing the analysis can be performed in under a day in 80 per cent of cases and in less than two days in all cases.
“As computer processing power increases we estimate that within two years the analysis could probably be performed in two to three hours,” Lagasco says. “That compares with the weeks or months it can take to obtain results from using traditional PIV systems.”
Having tested the system in vitro during the project, the partners are planning to develop and evaluate it further in trials involving a medical device manufacturer.
“We’re currently in talks with Sorin, a multinational producer of heart valves, and with an Italian SME that is looking to use SMART-PIV to optimise the design of their VADs,” Lagasco says. “The commercial possibilities for the system are therefore extensive and a product based on the project results will probably be in use within the next few years.”

Cambridgeport, VT (PRWEB) September 28, 2005 -- AV Bluebook, America's only value-added national distributor of audio-visual, multimedia and presentation products, announced availability of its new AV Bluebook SmartCredit program for

AV Bluebook SmartCredit provides

Casting Call for Digital Cable Ready Solutions
New research from The Diffusion Group predicts digital cable ready devices to surpass 120 million units by 2010.
Dallas, TX (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) September 28, 2005 -- Today's set-top boxes will gradually give way to Digital Cable Ready devices such as TVs and DVRs that first use CableCARDs and then downloadable security to enable consumers to receive services from a local cable operator. According to The Diffusion Group's latest report, The Transition to Digital Cable Ready: Analysis and Forecasts, TV, DVR, and set-top manufacturers will begin mass shipments of these devices in 2006, with cumulative deployments expected to grow 17 fold by 2010.
"While Digital Cable Ready (DCR) deployments will expand rapidly in the next few years, the product is anything but straightforward," says Gary Sasaki, consulting analyst with The Diffusion Group. "Because the early DCR solutions such as the CableCARD can involve as many as six parties - the MSO, the technician, the consumer, the CableCARD vendor, the television/DVR/STB vendor, and the retailer - it is easy to point fingers at the other guy when something goes wrong. This confusion can make it particularly frustrating for all involved. Many current CableCARD users report four or more technician visits, along with multiple phone calls to television support. MSOs often try to push a STB or DVR on the subscriber, saying that the CableCARD simply does not work."
Currently, digital cable set-top boxes are proprietary and specific to the network operator - thus, they cannot be used on cable networks other than pay TV service operator who distributes the STBs. Standards pushed by U.S. government mandate that new set-top boxes are capable of working with all US cable systems, regardless of the network operator in question. With Digital Cable Ready solutions such as the portable CableCARD and downloadable security, new set-top boxes can be used on multiple network systems. As with the transition from broadcast TV to analog cable TV, it won't be long until the functionality of a separate digital STB will soon become embedded within the TV or DVR itself.
TDG's latest report, The Transition to Digital Cable Ready: Analysis & Forecasts, provides a detailed examination of the transition from analog to digital set-top boxes, to CableCARDs and ultimately downloadable security. The report provides a detailed explanation of technologies and specific standards involved in the transition to Digital Cable Ready; an analysis of the market and bureaucratic forces driving the movement to embedded conditional access and security in the US cable industry; an examination of consumer TV purchase intentions and familiarity with Digital Cable Ready products; as well as detailed forecasts for Digital Cable Ready products through 2010.

Also, new features have been added to the existing Palm OS version and web photo-hosting service. Further, the company is announcing a new business model for SplashBlog that will enable anybody to start and maintain a photoblog of up to 100 images at absolutely no cost.

SplashData will be demonstrating the new versions of SplashBlog at the CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment Exposition from September 27 – 29 in the Nokia, Palm and Handango booths.
The process of "blogging," maintaining a personal journal on the Internet that is frequently updated, has been steadily growing in popularity. SplashBlog adds an entirely new element to blogging —- instantly publishing a photo diary from a wireless device. SplashBlog users can snap photos of vacations, newborns, and other momentous occasions, and wirelessly publish those pictures to their personal photoblogs within seconds for friends and family scattered throughout the world to enjoy.
SplashBlog streamlines the process of mobile photoblogging, allowing users to capture an image and publish it to an online photoblog in as little as two clicks. And each photoblog can be configured with different access privileges enabling users to require a password to view the photoblog, or the ability to allow some or all users to post photos to a shared group blog.
A vital ingredient to blogging that has made it a global phenomenon is the ability to add personal comments to an original post, fostering a spirit of community and even controversy as differing views are expressed. The new version of SplashBlog follows in this tradition by allowing visitors to post their own comments about each published image. Comments can either be posted on the Web by visitors using a PC, or from a wireless device using SplashBlog. The user experience for reading and replying to comments using SplashBlog on a wireless device is similar to that of an instant messaging client and provides a whole new level of wireless communication with pictures and words.
While SplashData has greatly expanded both the feature-set and potential number of SplashBloggers by adding versions for Windows Mobile and Symbian OS devices, it has also made it possible for wireless device users to start and maintain online photoblogs with no out-of-pocket expenses at all. Anybody can create and maintain a SplashBlog of up to 100 images for free. Those who want to store more than 100 images at SplashBlog.com can purchase a subscription for unlimited photo hosting for $29.95 per year.
"The beauty of SplashBlog is the immediacy in which users can capture, organize and share photos, which is made possible by the tight integration between the SplashBlog handheld software and the online photo sharing site, SplashBlog.com. SplashBlog has changed the way people share photos by eliminating the hassle out of creating and maintaining an online photo album," said John Chaffee, president of SplashData. "This product offers engineers, students and home hobbyists an affordable and portable way to test and debug their electronic products and designs."
The AX is used for testing and controlling electronic circuit designs. It verifies analog voltage levels and digital logic, generating a visual representation of the signals. For elaborate testing, the AX's buffer capacity is able to hold substantial information. The AX relies on the USB 2.0 bus to turn an existing personal computer into a high-powered oscilloscope, logic analyzer, and digital signal generator.
CWAV designed the AX system with personal computer resources in mind. Able to stream data to and from a personal computer, the USBee AX Test Pod performs all triggering and data storing. "This is essential and makes this product affordable," adds Harvey. Cell Phone Recycling Industry Rapidly Evolving; Home-Based Recycling Entrepreneurs Desperately Needed to Accomplish Governmental E-Waste Goals
Utah recycling entrepreneur/author reveals startling statistics: 500 million cell phones are currently available for recycling in the US alone, representing billions of dollars in potential income to home-based recyclers. Governmental e-waste initiatives, without the efficiency of local entrepreneurs, are doomed to failure, resulting in "tiny, toxic time-bombs" being released into landfills and aquifers by the millions.
Draper, Utah (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) September 27, 2005 -- It has long been recognized that cell phones contain many extremely toxic industrial byproducts -- lead, arsenic, cadmium, beryllium, brominated compounds, and many other carcinogenic and persistent poisons. In effect, cell phones are "ticking, tiny toxic time bombs" just waiting to be released into the environment.
An industry has been evolving to address the rapidly growing disposal challenges associated with the half-billion used cell phones and PDAs already taken out of use. This stockpile will grow by about 150 million new phones this year, and each year thereafter.
Environmentalists and government officials, alarmed at the exploding toxic threat represented by this growing waste stream, are rapidly debating legislative ways to deal with it. Scott Andrews, a Utah recycling veteran, claims that any legislative efforts to address the problem are, at best, band-aid approaches.
Fortunately, states Andrews, a large part of the solution lies in the evolution of an effective and efficient profit-driven recycling market, simlar to what occured in the late 70's with the advent of the automotive catalytic converter. During that period Mr. Andrews, through his publishing efforts, educated thousands of potential recycling entrepreneurs and motivated them to establish a steady supply stream to the ultimate refiners, while making a handsome profit themselves.
With his most recent research report, "Cell Phone Recycling For Profit", he is going to inform a new generation of local, home-based recycling entrepreneurs about the profit potential in used phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other wireless devices. With the scrap value of certain personal electronic devices reaching as much as $250, Andrews states that there is plenty of motivation to collect and supply the devices to eager buyers who do not have a local presence.
In his report Andrews addresses both the opportunity, as well as the challenges, facing the local cell phone recycler. There is a growing list of buyers heavily dependent upon the efficiencies created by local recyclers, and the prices they pay vary widely, as do their service levels. Abetted by a soon-to-be-released weblog in support of his readers, he is prepared to provide up to date information on this rapidly evolving recycling niche.
Scott Andrews and his company Recyclebiz.com, are dedicated to serving the needs of the fledgling cell phone recycling industry and help alleviate the growing concerns revolving around improper disposal of this critically toxic electronic waste stream.
For additional information on the news that is the subject of this release, contact Scott Andrews or visit www.cellphones.recyclebiz.com.
About Scott Andrews and Recyclebiz.com:
Scott Andrews is a 30-year veteran of specialty recycling. Author of "High-Profit Recycling" and "The Recycler's Library", he spent many years traveling the Western US buying scrap film and marketing silver-recovery services to hospitals, newspapers, printers, and radiographic labs. He then diversified his efforts into the dental scrap arena, buying and processing precious metals waste generated in dental offices. With the advent of catalytic converters in the auto industry in the mid-seventies, he expanded into recovery of the platinum-group metals from automobiles.
A native of Attleboro, Massachusetts, and a graduate of the University of Utah, he currently resides in the Salt Lake City area with his wife Susan.

New Portable College Security System Launches in September, National Campus Safety Awareness Month
Visonic's new AbbraCampus security system will help protect college students, who are most vulnerable to crimes both on and off campus during September. The AbbraCampus system is now available through Target.com.
(PRWEB) September 27, 2005 -- Visonic recently announced the launch of its latest security system, AbbraCampus, which is designed to protect college students from campus crime. This new product launch comes just in time for National Campus Safety Month, and it is now available at Target.com.
It is widely recognized that college students are most vulnerable in September due to being more lax about their personal safety and security. Being forewarned is being forearmed and while we certainly don't want students to be fearful, having a deepened awareness of surroundings as well as learning simple things they can easily do in daily lives will raise the odds in their favor substantially.
As a result, raising safety awareness for all college students and families is our mission, our simple 10 step Campus Safety Brochure is a must read especially for all undergraduate students and parents. Did you know that 80 percent of all campus crime is perpetrated by students, and approximately 90 percent involve drugs and alcohol?
"I just feel so much safer now that I have this system, I don't worry about someone coming in when I'm studying or sleeping," said Adrianne Hooten, a junior at the University of Texas in Dallas.
The AbbraCampus security system is wireless so it sets up quickly and moves when you do so you'll be protected wherever you live. For a limited time, enjoy one year of professional monitoring with each system as well as free shipping through Target.com exclusively.
Help us help college students across our country be safer now. Thanks for helping us get this important message out; you just might help save a life.

S. G. Hart & Associates Comments on the Confronting of Counterfeiting in the Technology Industry
S. G. Hart & Associates, LLC, The Brand Equity Protection CompanyTM, was highlighted in KPMG’s weekly e-newsletter discussing counterfeiting as it relates to the technology industry. Stanley G. Hart, President & CEO, and Anthony M. Miano, Executive Partner, lent support to KPMG LLP in their assessment of the growing threat of brand protection loss in the information technology sector. The International Chamber of Commerce estimates that world-wide losses due to counterfeiting and piracy are estimated to be as high as $600 billion dollars. The Alliance for Gray Market and Counterfeit Abatement (AGMA) and KPMG estimate that approximately $100 billion of global IT industry revenue is lost to counterfeiters annually in their whitepaper titled “Managing the Risks of Counterfeiting in the Information Technology Industry.”
Ridgefield, CT (PRWEB) September 27, 2005 -– S.
Stanley G. Hart, President & CEO of S. G. Hart & Associates, talks about how the threat to technology companies is real and growing. “There has been a change within the industry about the problem and the need to be proactive is getting much more attention.” Following the interview Hart remarked, “Industry leaders are calling upon their organizations to look for new ways to add value to their products for consumers given that competition from all quarters is becoming increasingly fierce. CEOs are beginning to realize that by recapturing lost revenue they can actually increase sales through existing channels and potentially save on warranty claims and false recalls.”
“Along with consumers, small-and medium-sized business are also vulnerable to buying counterfeit products, particularly monitors, printers and toner cartridges,” according to Executive Partner Anthony M. Miano. Miano explained, “the larger enterprise customers will have direct relationships with larger manufacturers and are fairly secure about the product’s supply chain …it’s the smaller companies trying to save money that tend to seek alternative markets where counterfeits can pop up [and quality issues arise.”
Mr. Hart concluded the article by saying that, “Counterfeiting is considered a form of fraud, so more companies are including the problem as part of their review of internal controls, which are part of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) governing public companies.” We’re seeing that boards of directors have this on their agenda not only because of SOX, but also because of the damage this could do to a company’s brand and the liability [exposure. Directors are very involved in this.”

Dialog Semiconductor Launches New Integrated General Purpose Power Management Controller
Dialog Semiconductor Plc has launched a new general purpose device for use as a core building block in power management sub-systems in portable electronics equipment, audio players, cellular handsets and digital cameras. The new DA9025 high performance power management controller takes a system level approach to managing the multiple power domains and voltage requirements of lithium powered portable applications, integrating a number of functions and interfacing directly with a battery pack.
Kirchheim/Teck, Germany (PRWEB) September 26, 2005 -- Dialog Semiconductor Plc (NASDAQ: DLGS, FWB: DLG) has launched a new general purpose device for use as a core building block in power management sub-systems in portable electronics equipment, audio players, cellular handsets and digital cameras. The new DA9025 high performance power management controller takes a system level approach to managing the multiple power domains and voltage requirements of lithium powered portable applications, integrating a number of functions and interfacing directly with a battery pack.
Containing four low power, high performance, low dropout regulators based on Dialog Semiconductor’s unique ‘Smart Mirror™’ technology, a real time clock supply and a high efficiency buck converter, the new IC fits between the simple single function device such as a low dropout regulator (LDO) or switching converter, and sophisticated system-on-chip ICs. The main benefit of this approach is that it reduces the cost and PCB overhead of having to build in multiple off-the-shelf, low-integration power management components from multiple vendors.
The DA9025 can be used both standalone with pre-determined power-up sequence for simple operation, or controlled by an I2C bus for greater control and programmability of output voltages and power in individual blocks.
Power efficiency and therefore longer battery life is enabled using Dialog Semiconductor’s patented and unique Smart Mirror™ architecture – a technology that optimizes quiescent current consumption by matching it to the current demand and performance required, removing the need for a low power mode and the associated hardware and software overhead.
Typical handheld applications for the DA9025 include those with a lithium power source, processor controlling the main functionality, memory, external peripherals such as a display, memory expansion such as SD or MMC card and some analog functionality such as data conversion or sensor interfacing.
Such a system requires a number of different power domains. For example, the processor may typically require two supplies, a low voltage for its core to save power consumption and higher voltage to interface with the other devices. Analog functions tend to require higher voltages to guarantee operating headroom or provide powerful output drivers and display drivers tend to require higher voltages as display size and complexity increases.
The DA9025’s low dropout voltage regulators are designed specially for supplying stable voltages to various parts of the system. The low drop linear regulators are optimized for critical system parameters such as low noise, high power supply rejection or low quiescent current. Two of the LDOs may be used to supply audio or RF circuits as they are low noise and typically exhibit more than 80dB power supply rejection.
Battery supplies to the regulators are separated to maximize isolation. Under I2C control the regulator output voltage is also programmable. A fifth integrated regulator provides a supply for a real time clock. This is permanently active when the battery is connected but is a very low quiescent current design.
The integrated DC-DC buck converter has a programmable range of 0.85 to 3.3V, with a default supply of 1.8V at up to 400mA. In many systems the buck converter is used to power the system processor and memory. The buck converter may be set to operate in either synchronous or asynchronous modes to optimize operating efficiency depending on load current. The converter has integrated switching FETs and requires a minimum number of external components. Under I2C control the buck converter output voltage is also programmable allowing very low voltage processors to be used.
The DA9025 is available now in a 4 * 4mm 24 QFN package.
