The One Speaker, One Wire Surround Sound Solution

If you're looking for the highest quality home theater sound system that installs in minutes (without running speaker wires all over your room), the Binaura Sound Environment is an ideal solution.

(PRWEB) October 28, 2005 -- Forget about speaker wires cluttering your house and a tedious, infuriating set-up process. The Binaura Sound Environment is a one speaker, one wire surround sound system. Binaura Sound Environment delivers the highest quality home theater sound from any 5.1 channel surround source.

"Its choice of colors makes it decor friendly, and it is compact and easy to install and use. And, yet, upon my every test, I was impressed by what I heard-- a richness and complexity of sound beyond what should logically emanate from one small loudspeaker cabinet and a subwoofer." - Chris Chiarella (Home Theater Magazine, 11/2005)

So how do you get such a phenomenal sound environment from just one simple solid wood speaker cabinet and a subwoofer? When you hear a sound from your left, your left ear hears it first, then your right ear. As a sound source moves around you, the delay from one ear to the other changes. Your brain interprets these delays and "maps" the source of the sound in your environment.

Binaura technology uses a combination of signal delay processing and the physical configuration of the speaker enclosure to re-create this sound mapping. By taking full advantage of the multi-channel audio signals in a movie's soundtrack, Binaura can vividly create the experience of a huge sound field.

Binaura also decodes and reproduces a masterful stereo image from any 2-channel source such as a TV or CD player. Adjustable center-channel volume and subwoofer volume allows you to hear conversation more clearly and boosts the sound effects of action-packed movies.

Binaura is available online at firstSTREETonline.com, a Top 400 Internet retailer, for only $499.00.

Crossware ColdFire Suite Builds Freescale's Trio MP3 Application

Crossware, a leading embedded software tools developer, has released a new version of its ColdFire® Development Suite which is able to build the Trio MP3 application software developed by Freescale Semiconductor for use by its ColdFire customers.

CAMBRIDGE, UK (PRWEB) October 28, 2005 -- Crossware (www.crossware.com), a leading embedded software tools developer, has released a new version of its ColdFire® Development Suite which is able to build the Trio MP3 application software developed by Freescale Semiconductor for use by its ColdFire customers.

Based on the Flex real time operating system, the Trio MP3 application runs on the ColdFire MCF5249 and SCF5250 microprocessors. It includes not only an MP3 decoder and encoder but decoders for Microsoft Windows Media Audio (WMA), Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), Ogg Vorbis and other format files. These files can optionally reside on a hard drive, CD drive or SD card.

“In adding support for the Trio MP3 application, we are responding to the rapid growth of interest in compressed audio technology which looks set to extend well beyond the portable device and home entertainment environments into markets such as automotive,” says Alan Harry of Crossware.

“With the introduction of our new version of the ColdFire suite, users now have a choice of development environment for this increasingly popular and expanding application - and can take advantage of the enhancements to our Embedded Development Studio which will speed the whole development process.”

Freescale supplies its Trio MP3 application as source code and a set of precompiled libraries. A set of ‘makefiles’ is also supplied which are used to control the compiler, assembler and linker during the build process. However, an enhancement to the Crossware Embedded Development Studio enables these ‘makefiles’ to be used to automatically create the files necessary for the application to be built from within Crossware’s user friendly GUI development environment.

For example, the user has simply to browse to the folder containing the master ‘makefile’ and the Embedded Development Studio will create the completely configured development Workspace in less than 30 seconds. The application can then be immediately built, downloaded and run on the target board. Flash videos illustrating the Workspace creation, build and download process are available on the Crossware web site at: http://www.crossware.com/mp3player.

StorageQuest & Primera Target SMB’s with DVD Backup & Archive Solution to Replace Tape Autoloaders

StorageQuest Inc. today announced it has certified its REFLECTOR Backup and Archival Software with the recently introduced Bravo XR Disc Publisher from Primera Technology, Inc. This is the first DVD backup solution to challenge the low-to-mid range tape autoloaders providing an archival and backup solution for compliancy with an industry standard TRUE WORM media.

Ottawa, Canada (PRWEB) October 27, 2005 -- StorageQuest Inc. today announced it has certified its REFLECTOR Backup and Archival Software with the recently introduced Bravo XR Disc Publisher from Primera Technology, Inc. This is the first DVD backup solution to challenge the low-to-mid range tape autoloaders providing an archival and backup solution for compliancy with an industry standard TRUE WORM media.

Until today, tape autoloaders have been utilized in most small and medium business applications for backup of critical data. Tape based solutions have always had reliability concerns and used proprietary formats to record data, making data exchange expensive as all systems must have a tape drive and associated software to read the tape.

Today this has all changed. StorageQuest’s REFLECTOR backup and archival application, when combined with Primera’s new Bravo XR, is setting a new standard in how users will implement and utilize DVD technology as an integrated storage solution to meet backup and archival requirements of their data in an open and very cost effective way.

REFLECTOR’s Disk-to-Disc architecture is designed to enable businesses to move from tape to DVD disc backup for compliant long-term data protection. REFLECTOR’s long-term data protection features include file spanning, file splitting and optical disc labeling. File spanning automatically records optical discs for any backup dataset and optimally packs the data requiring the smallest number of discs. File splitting allows files larger than a single piece of optical media to split across multiple discs. Split files can be restored without using the REFLECTOR software on any operating system. The REFLECTOR software uses the industry standard UDF (Universal Disc Format) so that any data written to a DVD can be read on any Windows, Linux, UNIX or MAC OS X system without any client software. When you consider that just about every server, desktop and laptop is shipped with a DVD drive, there is no special hardware or software required to retrieve your data.

REFLECTOR will also automatically print a full-size, full-color, dynamic label on each DVD disc with the fields and information the user has specified during the setup process, making each disc is easily identifiable. Unique bar-codes can also be printed.

“This announcement is more than just a certification process. It marks for the first time that there is a network-enabled backup and archive application supporting an automated, optical, rack-mounted data storage solution,” said Fred Bedard, StorageQuest’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “There is now a backup solution that provides a very cost effective solution for compliant storage utilizing industry standard DVD, which is TRUE WORM by design. This is a key differentiator between our solution and magnetic disk and tape solutions which ’emulate‘ WORM technology and are being touted as compliant storage solutions. When you consider a magnetic WORM tape can be erased by any standard magnetic eraser tool you have to ask how it can also be compliant. Another key differentiator is our breakthrough in price: for less than $4,000.00, you can have a network-enabled backup and archival solution that not only writes your data to standard DVD’s, but also prints a full-color label for easy identification of each disc’s contents. Try doing this with a tape solution.”

“With its unique, space-saving design and rugged construction, Bravo XR is our most versatile CD/DVD publishing unit ever,” said Mark D. Strobel, Primera Technology’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “When integrated with StorageQuest’s REFLECTOR Software, users in ‘mission critical’ applications will find it to be a highly-reliable solution at a far more affordable price than traditional tape based solutions.”

Pricing and Availability
The StorageQuest REFLECTOR Backup & Archive Software is priced at US$795 MSRP for a complete network-enabled solution for the Primera Bravo XR Disc Publisher. The Bravo XR Disc Publisher is priced at US$2995 MSRP. The Rack Mount Kit is US$99.95. Both the Reflector and Bravo XR Disc Publisher are currently shipping from StorageQuest and Primera resellers worldwide.

ESD Simulator from Schaffner EMC Offers Updated Ergonomic Design

Schaffner EMC Inc., a leading provider of EMI/RFI components, EMC instrumentation and test systems, has updated its NSG 438 ESD (electrostatic discharge simulator) system to provide more convenient operator control as well as to meet current and future industry standards.

Edison, NJ (PRWEB) October 27, 2005 -- Schaffner EMC Inc., a leading provider of EMI/RFI components, EMC instrumentation and test systems, has updated its NSG 438 ESD (electrostatic discharge simulator) system to provide more convenient operator control as well as to meet current and future industry standards. The NSG 438 is ideal for automotive industry applications that require testing with multiple R-C (resistor-capacitor) network values.

The NSG 438 detects the occurrence of actual discharges, allowing the counter or the pre-selection counter to only register actual discharge events. This feature prevents false counts when discharges have not occurred, which is a particular advantage in long test runs where an accurate count is required. In addition, the detector threshold for a valid discharge can be adjusted for specific applications. In the case of air discharges, the effective pulse voltage present at the moment of discharge is measured and shown on the display, avoiding errors through stray discharges.

The updated system is ergonomically designed with all operator controls located conveniently on the pistol. It features a large, easy-to-read touch screen that displays all discharge settings. Users can input settings with either a virtual thumbwheel or a new, easy-to-use keypad screen that provides fast, precise data entry.

The NSG 438 is designed to meet a broad range of current industry standards, as well as future requirements for revised ESD standards proposed by ANSI and the IEC. The simulator has an elevated discharge voltage range of up to 30 kV in both air and contact discharge modes, exceeding current industry ESD test standards, which require testing at pulse voltages of 25 kV.

The NSG 438 includes pre-programmed settings for IEC/EN 61000-4-2 and ISO 10605 to ensure that correct standard settings are made automatically. The NSG 438 identifies each network’s R-C value when installed inside the simulator, greatly reducing potential operator errors when running tests to multiple standards.

Over 20 R-C networks are available for the NSG 438 to address a broad range of standards. R-C networks are optimally priced and can be purchased individually, allowing users to configure an extremely cost-effective system that supports only the specific ESD standards required for their particular testing needs.

The basic NSG 438 model is supplied with a 150 pF / 330 W network in compliance with IEC/EN 61000-4-2. Users can add appropriate network modules to accommodate other standards such as ISO 10605 and SAE J1113.

Pricing for the NSG 438 starts under $11,000. Delivery is typically four to eight weeks ARO.

Schaffner EMC, Inc., provides the world’s largest range of EMI components, EMC instrumentation and test systems for radiated and conducted interference, and advanced power supply test systems.

Breakthrough Pyrometry Technology Uses L.E.D. to Illuminate Only the Area Being Measured

Measuring temperatures with a non-contact sensor is now being done with added confidence. A built-in L.E.D. is used to illuminate the exact area being measured. The light source shares the same optics used to receive the IR from the targeted area.

(PRWEB) October 26, 2005 -- ThermaLogix Inc. announces the availability of its IRt/c non-contact temperature sensor, the TL-75.

Manufactured in the USA by one of the leaders in pyrometry, this advanced product concentrates on the user’s ability to visually confirm the area being measured. Each TL-75 contains an integral sighting system. The sighting system illuminates the area being monitored by using a safe LED that shines through the same optics used to capture the Infrared.

Unlike all the other IRt/c’s on the market, the TL-75 provides the confidence the user needs knowing that what he sees illuminated is what he is measuring. “What you see is what you get.”

Standard models are available that can measure an area as small as 2 mm in diameter, have the minimum measured spot size at distances to 100 mm and have outputs ranging from 1mV/°C, 0-5Volt, 4-20 mA Differential and both “K” and “J” Type Thermocouples.

Targeted applications include both PCB rework systems that rely on accurate temperature readings of components during reflow such as lead free µBGA’s and temperature profiling on individual leads or component hot spots.

Other applications include i) energy conversation for insulation and heat flow studies, ii)Quality Control for printed circuit boards, soldering, universal joints, welding, metrology, iii) Silicon for crystal growing, strand/fiber and wafer annealing and iv) Vacuum chambers for refining, processing and deposition.

Earthcomber Partners with Exxon Mobil, Avalon and Other Publishers to Produce 'Spot Guides™,' Linking Content with Interactive Maps on Mobile Devices

A new era for print products was launched today with the debut of “Spot Guides™” -- the first books made for mobile devices that combine mapping and personalization.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB via MobilityNewswire) October 25, 2005 -- A new era for print products was launched today with the debut of “Spot Guides™” -- the first books made for mobile devices that combine mapping and personalization.

Earthcomber LLC created the free technology that incorporates maps and personal favorites with traditional travel, reference and other mainstream publications. Among the first offerings are city guides from Mobil Travel Guide (the company's first venture into mobile publishing) and Avalon Publishing's Moon Metro series.

Spot Guides run on Palm OS phones and PDAs, and provide location sensing and area searching with or without GPS. Versions for Windows Mobile, cell phones and BlackBerry devices are in production.

Much like the iPodtm has miniaturized music to become portable and personal, Earthcomber Spot Guides present users with their favorite kinds of information as they come upon the actual places where it is most useful. Multiple Spot Guides, unabridged and with photos, can fit onto a single, stamp-sized memory card.

Spot Guides are a “plug-in” to Earthcomber's basic free mobile software and built-in digital maps. The patent-pending technology maintains individual privacy while constantly combing the area each person travels for unlimited numbers of personal interests -- anything from an ATM to a waterfall, cup of coffee, museum, bistro, school, golf course, bar or even local events.

Unlike books in print, Spot Guides give a person the option of exploring the electronic guide through hot-linked pages, special icons, photos and searches -- all within the context of a book title. As the reader considers any place mentioned, Earthcomber displays the distance to that spot. As the person moves, distances are updated.

“Imagine your bookmarks tapping you on the shoulder,” says Jim Brady, Earthcomber founder and former Oprah new media executive. “Spot Guides are like books that you can leave ‘on.’ The idea is that life is so much more interesting, and we could get so much more out of every day, if only we could know what's right around us.”

The Spot Guide format is appealing for a wide variety of books. Many publishers find Earthcomber attractive as a new vehicle for putting out mobile products, and organizations also are turning to Earthcomber to publish guides that are location-aware and ultra-portable:

* The Greater Minneapolis Convention and Visitors Association packed city history, neighborhood sketches, travel info and member locations into a Spot Guide;
* Damron Company is offering a comprehensive guide to gay-friendly places and services across the US;
* The Find-A-Grave website has created a mobile famous grave spotter.

“With no printing, paper, shipping or shelf-stocking, Spot Guides dodge the usual costs and risks,” Brady said.

Guides are sold online at www.earthcomber.com and publisher web sites, and priced typically between $9.50 and $20. Some are given away free, depending on the publisher's intent. Free Earthcomber mapping and personal interest software is also available at www.earthcomber.com.

John Winegard Founder Of The Winegard Company Inducted Into The 2005 Consumer Electronics Hall Of Fame

Among 11 distinguished professionals to join the existing 87 members.

Burlington, Iowa (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) October 20, 2005 -- Winegard Company is very pleased to announce that John Winegard, founder of the Winegard Company, was formally inducted into the 2005 Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame during its Industry Forum in Las Vegas on October 18, 2005.

The CE Hall of Fame program, now in its sixth year, recognizes the accomplishments of the consumer technology industry that provides the products and services that inform, educate, entertain and keep consumers connected. For this year's class, the voting took place on November 9, 2004 in New York City with a panel of media and industry professionals, who judged the hundreds of nominations that were submitted by manufacturers, retailers and industry journalists. This new class of the CE Hall of Fame members was announce during the opening keynote speech at the 2005 International CES held in Las Vegas, NV on January 6-9.

Winegard Company was founded in 1954 in Burlington Iowa by John. He began designing outdoor TV antennas in 1948 to receive a signal from TV station WBKB (now WBBM) broadcasting from Chicago, two hundred miles east and north of Burlington.

This family-owned, multi-million-dollar firm was born in a basement from several lengths of aluminum tubing, a hand drill, a hacksaw and about $200 in capital. The Horatio Alger mystic is still alive and well in the stories told about the self-educated, engineer/inventor who founded the company and rode the wave of a video explosion that spawned hundreds of other companies at its peak. It took more than innovative genius, however, to stay on the crest of that volatile wave and emerge as a leader in an industry where less than half a dozen companies remain.

Following the war, he returned to Burlington as a radio repairman just as television was developing. Two hundred miles east of Burlington, Chicago was broadcasting from TV station WBKB (now WBBM), and just as he had done years before when he wanted that telegraph set, he constructed his own antenna and installed it on the roof of a local appliance dealer’s shop. Soon friends were giving him orders for similar antennas — and Winegard Company was born.

In the early 70’s John Winegard began spending more and more time in Evergreen, Colorado. And in 1975, Randy came to work at Winegard fulltime and John moved to Colorado. The Winegard Company is much different to manage today than it was 30 years ago, but Randy has remained steadfast in his father’s commitment to quality and customer service. He admits it wasn’t always easy making the transition from founder’s son to manager at first.

John Winegard died on Feb 19, 2002. Randy Winegard, the founder’s son, became President of the Company in 1977, successfully bridging a transition from the school kid who sold candy bars to Winegard employees to a modern, innovative manager with a presence and a direction of his own.

“I feel comfortable in this job now,” Randy says, “and I have a direction, and because I have a direction, the company has a direction.” “My father believed in quality, and we have an historical strength based on that, but the responsibility for maintaining and improving quality rests with current management. You can’t just say you’re committed to it. You have to get involved.”

Having held 60 patents over the years, 26 current US and 2 current foreign patents; Winegard Company has accomplished many “firsts” in the industry. John Winegard designed and built the world’s first all channel Yagi antenna which completely changed the antenna industry. Winegard is proud of its founder and the Company’s reputation for quality products and has great appreciation for the customers who have used Winegard products for over 50 years. Under the direction of President and CEO Randy Winegard, Winegard Company will continue to grow with new products and new customers proving without doubt that they are “Clearly the World’s Best!”

SchmartBoard to Give Free Samples of Prototyping Boards

SchmartBOARD, a company that manufactures a new type of prototyping board that makes hand soldering surface mount components so simple that a 10 year old can do it, has announced a program to give out free samples.

(PRWEB) October 20, 2005 -- SchmartBOARD, a company that manufactures a new type of prototyping board that makes hand soldering surface mount components so simple that a 10 year old can do it, has announced a program to give out free samples.

According to VP Sales & Marketing, Neal Greenberg: “The new Schmartboard|ez has been shipping for 1 month now. After launching it at DEMOfall. Although we have been very successful in capturing the attention of engineers, universities and hobbyists, our product is a huge improvement for prototyping and it is hard to convince people that a better “mousetrap” exists until they actually use it. We have found out that our best advertisement is to physically get the product in the hands of people.” The link to the program details and electronic form is at: http://www.schmartboard.com/index.asp?page=SchmartLAND_samples

"Engineers have historically used prototyping boards to test circuits and avoid costly custom printed circuit board (PCB) revisions" said Andrew Yaung, SchmartBoard's CEO. "Prototyping boards have existed for a long time, but as surface mount components have become smaller and smaller, these boards have not kept up with the technology and have not remained a practical tool for most applications. Because of this, engineers are forced to use custom PCBs and can spend large amounts of time and money on revision after revision of expensive custom PCBs before they finally have the circuit perfected. By making prototyping boards viable again, SchmartBoard|ez will save companies a tremendous amount of time and money." In addition to this need for an easy prototyping tool, SchmartBoard|ez can be used as the circuit board in mass-produced technologies.

About SchmartBoard(www.schmartboard.com)
SchmartBoard is committed to helping engineers, students, and hobbyists develop electronic circuits faster, easier, and less expensively than previously possible. At SchmartBoard, our three-word mission statement is "Electronics for Everyone". More information is available at http://www.schmartboard.com.

Complete T-DMB System Solution Unveiled by Frontier Silicon and C & S Technology

A full reference design featuring tuner, baseband and video processing resulting from collaboration between the two companies will be shown at the opening ceremony of Frontier Silicon’s South Korean office.

Seoul, South Korea (PRWEB) October 20, 2005 -- Frontier Silicon -- the leading fabless manufacturer of semiconductors for mobile digital television (MDTV) and DAB digital radio products -- and C & S Technology Inc., South Korea’s leading supplier of semiconductors for multimedia broadcasting and communications, will today reveal a complete, system-level reference design for Korean terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB). The solution is initially developed for automotive applications in which consumers can receive digital broadcast services while on the move, but will also provide mobile handset manufacturers with a working design upon which they can rapidly develop and launch mobile handsets both for the Korean market as well as for other regions intending to launch T-DMB broadcast services.

KN Kim, president of Frontier Silicon Korea said, “The demonstration of this solution shows that our chip set can interface with leading video applications processors to implement a full T-DMB solution, for both automotive environments and mobile handsets. Our work with the video processor from C & S Technology is just the first step in developing a choice of solutions for our customers to build their products on.” Mr SeungMo Seo, CEO of C&S Technology Inc., added, “We welcome the interface with Kino and Apollo from Frontier Silicon which make up a proven T-DMB implementation. We are confident that the combination of this with our Neptune chip will result in another successful T-DMB solution.”

The solution to be shown at the opening of Frontier Silicon’s office in Seoul is based on the company’s Apollo silicon RF tuner and Kino T-DMB baseband processor, interfaced with the Neptune multimedia processor from C & S Technology. Neptune is a single-chip multimedia processor designed to handle video and audio decoding for T-DMB and S-DMB (Korean satellite digital multimedia broadcasting), and it also features a hard-wired H.264 video decoder.

Apollo is the smallest RF tuner for T-DMB currently available, and features power consumption that is almost one-quarter of competing receivers. The small size and low power consumption make it ideal for designing into mobile handsets intended for T-DMB (digital video broadcasting) products. The Kino chip provides a dedicated hardware baseband solution for T-DMB which is fully programmable using software. This provides mobile TV handset manufacturers with maximum flexibility for configuring their products and the options that they can provide to their customers.

Aligning Content with Consumers is Key to Mastering the Mobile Video Market

New Topic Paper from The Diffusion Group Confirms Importance of Creating Targeted Content Offerings

Dallas, TX October 18, 2005 – The key to success in the early mobile video services market is aligning content offerings with the needs of specific consumer segments. According to a new topic paper from The Diffusion group, Mastering Content in the Mobile Video Market, developing targeted content offerings is preferable to pushing a broad range of content intended to meet the tastes of all viewers. The topic paper is available free of charge at TDG’s website – www.tdgresearch.com.

“There is an abundance of research suggesting that consumers are ‘interested’ in viewing video on their mobile phones. But this data only tells part of the story,” said Dale Gilliam, director of primary research at TDG. “It is not simply a question of general interest; rather, it is a question of what percentage of consumers would actually pay to receive such a service – making this determination is the real challenge.”

TDG’s research found that both general interest in and proclivity to purchase mobile video services varies relative to the types of content offered. In fact, knowing which content offerings to offer specific groups of consumers will actually increase the likelihood that these consumers will sign up and pay for the service.

“Securing a wide range of brand-name content will no doubt help to attract new users,” Gilliam continued. “Focusing on breadth of content over high-quality targeted content, however, would be a huge mistake, a move that could dilute the quality of those efforts that stand the best chance of success.”

TDG’s latest topic paper, Mastering Content in the Mobile Video Market, highlights data from August 2005 interviews with more than 2,100 US mobile phone users regarding their usage of and interest in a variety of mobile multimedia platforms and services including mobile phones, portable multimedia players, and portable gaming devices, as well as a variety of associated services. For a free copy of this topic paper, please visit TDG’s website at www.tdgresearch.com.

Semtek Receives Patent on Magnetic Stripe Reader with Power Management Control for Attachment to PDAs and Smartphones

Semtek Innovative Solutions Corporation announces it has been issued a patent for a magnetic stripe card reader (MSR) unit capable of attaching to and communicating with a handheld PDA or smartphone using only the electrical power available as supplied by the device.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB via MobilityNewswire) October 19, 2005 -- Semtek Innovative Solutions Corporation, the leading developer of mobile card-reading technologies, announces it has been issued a patent for a magnetic stripe card reader (MSR) unit capable of attaching to and communicating with a handheld PDA or smartphone using only the electrical power available as supplied by the device. The technology enables mobile merchants and service personnel to accept credit card payments or input information from a magnetic stripe card into a handheld while effectively managing power usage.

“Any PDA-based application designed for extended use will present power problems as most devices have limited battery life or need to be recharged frequently,” said Clay von Mueller, Semtek’s Chief Technology Officer. “Those equipped with standard magnetic stripe readers can greatly reduce battery longevity because of the power drain caused by the MSR device. Semtek’s patented card reading technology enables better power management and infinitely expands the power supply to the MSR by both conserving the power requirements of the device and offering the ability to tap into the power supplied by the PDA data lines.”

Semtek’s card readers connect through wireless handheld devices, such as PDAs and smartphones, and support industries requiring mobile commerce applications, on-site lead retrieval, and immediate identity verification. Mobile Swipe card readers are designed to work with top branded devices from such companies as Symbol, Samsung, Intermec, Hand-Held Products, palmOne, Hewlett Packard, and Motorola/Nextel. Semtek’s solutions are designed and priced to enable organizations of all sizes to be equipped with a cost-effective, secure means of accepting payments from remote locations. Competing products in the industry often require substantial investments in equipment, eliminating opportunities for small remote business operators.

Common industry applications of Semtek’s mobile magnetic stripe card readers include field technicians, such as plumbers who can accept payment at time of service, law enforcement personnel swiping drivers licenses to collect information for a citation, mobile merchants getting wireless authorization for POS transactions, and exposition workers collecting sales leads by swiping the badges of conference attendees who visit the vendor’s booth.

The patent number issued to Semtek is US 6,944,782.

DataTech's DirecStar® Transportable/Remote Satellite System Helps EPA in the Field with Necessary Communications Before, During and After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita

DataTech takes extreme measures to deliver to the EPA several high-speed Internet broadband antenna systems.

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) October 19, 2005 -- Data Technology International, LLC announced today that several of its new DirecStar auto-pointing and deploying systems using Hughes Network Systems' (HNS) DIRECWAY® broadband satellite system, are being utilized by the EPA from Dallas to assist with recovery efforts from Hurricane Rita.

Jon Gulch, OSC U.S. EPA (On-Scene Coordinator) Region 5 Emergency Response Branch said, "DataTech has taken extreme measures to make sure that the EPA had these units in time to be strategically located for Hurricane Katrina response. These units have provided the EPA with reliable communications in the field, which is a necessity in a response such as this." The EPA purchased their DataTech DirecStar systems from Miri Microsystems.

Using advanced satellite technology, the HNS DIRECWAY system provides high quality broadband connectivity using small antennas throughout the continental United States. DIRECWAY offers high speed Internet access as well as private intranets, such as those used by many business and disaster relief agencies. The nationwide coverage of the DIRECWAY service, combined with the rapid deployment capability offered by the DataTech DirecStar auto-pointing unit, results in an ideal solution for disaster recovery situations.

Tony Miri of Miri Microsystems, a Michigan satellite Internet sales, installation, and support company said, "We knew from the EPA that they and other government agencies had a need for a portable mobile unit that could get delivered quickly and inexpensively, attached to a roof rack on a vehicle, and be up and running immediately. We were looking for this type of system when we saw a working DirecStar unit at the Satellite Expo 2005 in June and recognized the benefits immediately. When Katrina hit, we accelerated all of our efforts to answer the EPA's needs for emergency response Portable Satellite Units and designed a roof-rack platform for them. To support communications efforts, the EPA OSCs asked us to deploy the DirecStar systems for Hurricane Katrina response and the units were assembled and sent to the field."

Additional DataTech DirecStar systems have now been sent to Dallas for use by the EPA, where they're now being mated with roof racks by employees of Miri and mounted on EPA vehicles to help with the recovery efforts for Rita. Several have already been deployed on EPA SUVs and other vehicles and driven east before Rita made landfall.

Miri continued, "We believe there's a great interest and need for this type of system within several government agencies and municipalities. Because of the simple, fast installation, the EPA can ship these units anywhere- whenever they're needed, and install them on vehicles at the sites for instant communications."

Reed Brown, president of DataTech said, "We are, of course, very glad that our DirecStar system could help with communications response for these two terrible hurricanes. Transportable Internet technology is all about the importance of connectivity. These new Internet satellite systems provide transportable access not only to the EPA, but to users such as homeland security, news organizations, the oil, gas, forestry and mining industries, medical service providers, law enforcement, military, emergency response teams, mobile command centers, government, field offices, broadband and video conferencing, construction and recreational vehicles."

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin said during a hearing held by the Senate Commerce Committee a few weeks ago that the agency is looking to improve disaster communications. Martin offered three areas for improvement: ensure that the public has the right tools to know when an emergency is coming; give consumers the ability to contact first responders; and enable first responders to communicate seamlessly, via enhanced network resiliency.

The DirecStar system was recently certified by Hughes Network Systems for use with HNS' DIRECWAY broadband satellite system. This certification included environmental and shock testing and compliance with HNS product performance standards.

Available with a .74 or .98 meter dish, the DirecStar system deploys rapidly, providing instant Internet connectivity with a simple touch screen interface and is easy to install. Transportable, high-speed connectivity gives the EPA broadband access from any remote location, without the need for phone lines. The DirecStar system includes single-platform connection for all users. Such applications as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), Virtual Private Networks (VPN), Secured Private Networks (SPN), transportable Wi-Fi access, real-time Web casts via multicast delivery and streaming and much more, are now available with the DirecStar system with just a click of a button.
