New Air Compressor Design Helps Agricultural and Food Processing Industries Stay Competitive

Direct-drive air compressors allow high-output and fail safe production so American packers can stave off foreign competition.

(PRWEB) June 29, 2021 -- More a matter of survival than patriotism, general managers and operations personnel of American peeling, packaging and other food processing plants must maintain maximum product throughput, without fail, in order to stem the increasing tide of imported agricultural products. As pneumatic actuators and direct-air blasts perform the bulk of processing duties in most plants, packers find themselves turning to a new, direct-drive air compressor design to ensure maximum output and reliability.

No where else is this more the case than in the garlic industry, as garlic from China now accounts for two-thirds of the world's supply and threatens to snatch an even greater market share from American producers.

Sequoia Packing of Coalinga, California—with the second largest fresh-garlic packing capacity in the U.S.—provides an example of one peeling/packing plant that is successfully fighting back by utilizing direct-drive, industrial air compressors throughout their process to maximize output and avoid breakdowns.

"Compressors are used extensively throughout our plant," says Tony Villalobos, operations manager for Sequoia Packing. "We use the air for peeling garlic and discarding the waste; in our optical sorters to keep out unwanted cloves; in the actuators of our package sealer; and for the weight scales in our packing room."

"Up until about four years ago we had older, chain drive air compressors that kept breaking down and couldn't keep up with demand," continues Villalobos. "One broke down within a year's time, and when a compressor goes down I am out of business until the machine gets fixed. Since these models were too expensive to repair, I went out and bought a new Sullivan-Palatek unit. It had a great warranty, which impressed me. Once we used the first one, there was no doubt as to where the second air compressor was coming from. We got the other Sullivan-Palatek in 2003."

Sullivan-PalatekÒ, of Michigan City, Indiana, manufacturers a line of direct-drive rotary-screw, industrial air compressor systems that allow agricultural and food-processing industries to profit from greater reliability and energy savings in their pressurized-air operations. The increased reliability and output of this design stems from the use of larger air-end assemblies, which results in slower turning rotors that yield extended service life and higher pressure using lower horsepower. Extra efficiency results from use of a direct-drive rotary screw that eliminates unnecessary moving parts such as belts, gears and pulleys—thus reducing the parasitic losses attributed to belts (4-8% loss) and gears (3-5%).

"We run these machines pretty hard, and they stand up to it," comments Villalobos.

"There are no breakdowns. That's the important thing. I'd have no problem going out and buying another Sullivan-Palatek. In fact, right now I'm working on getting another one because we're getting so big that I need more. These air compressor systems are helping us to put China in its place."

Meter Equipment Mfg. P-72 Copolymer Flow Meters Provide Economical Metering of Chlorine and Caustics

MEM's P-72 Styrene Copolymer heavy bodied meters are specifically designed for demanding applications including chlorine, hot wet chlorine gas, chlorine dioxide, sodium hydroxide, high pH sodium hypochlorite, and brines. Previously limited to select OEM accounts, these flowmeters are now offered to the entire chlor-alkali market, along with wastewater treatment plants, chemical processors, and other users of harsh chemicals.

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) June 28, 2021 -- MEM's P-72 Flowmeters provide a tough, simple, and accurate flow metering solution for chlor-alkali fluid service. These heavy bodied flowmeters are specifically designed for demanding applications including chlorine brines, hot wet chlorine gas, chlorine dioxide, sodium hydroxide, high pH sodium hypochlorite, and other chlor-alkali applications. Previously custom manufactured for electrolytic cells in the production of chlor-alkali and chlorate chemicals, an engineer in one division of Occidental Chemical called them the "safety standard for chlor-alkali service.”

These meters were also selected for the City of Akron's Water Supply Plant for their Sedimentation Basins Rehabilitation Project. Fluids being metered include chlorine and chlorine dioxide. MEM is the only company offering flow meters in this special material, and Akron selected them because they offered superior corrosion resistance to the chlorine solutions. Additionally, MEM's meters cost less than the meters originally specified on the job.

Depending on the service, wetted materials are all P-72 Copolymer or P-72 with titanium, electroless nickel plated T310 stainless, and Teflon internals for maximum corrosion resistance. Sight tubes may be glass, polysulfone, or P-72 (again, depending on fluid service). For all P-72 meters, an externally coupled magnetic flow indicator is used.

MEM's P-72 meters are offered in a variety of flow ranges from 1 to 300 GPM Liquid, or 20 to 3500 SCFM Gas (100 psig, 70 degree F. air equivalent). Pressure-temperature ratings are similar to CPVC. Flanged connections are standard, although NPT and socket cement connections are offered as options. Like all standard MEM Products, P-72 flow meters can be disassembled without removing the body from the pipeline to facilitate cleaning.

These thermoplastic flowmeters may also be supplied with MEM's electronic accessories, including alarms, remote 4-20mA outputs, and flow computers.

Symmetricom to Acquire Agilent Technologies' Frequency and Time Standards Product Line

The acquisition enhances technology leadership in high-precision timing with acquisition of Agilent's Cesium Frequency Standards.

Under the terms of the proposed transaction, Symmetricom will pay approximately $8.0 million in cash. The acquisition is expected to close in several weeks.

Agilent’s Frequency and Time Standards product line includes the 5071A Primary Frequency Standard, one of the highest-performing commercial cesium standards available for timekeeping. The cesium clock, accurate to one second every 162,000 years, is used in government laboratories worldwide. Customers include national time authorities and measurement institutes, such as the U.S. Naval Observatory and the world’s time authority, BIPM, in France (BIPM provides the internationally recognized definition of a second of time). Safran and Japan Collaborate To Design Supersonic Jet

French aerospace superpower Safran enlists the help of Japan and European countries in their effort to create the next supersonic jet, dubbed the "next Concorde".

(PRWEB) June 24, 2021 -- Japan and France are jointly researching a new supersonic passenger plane to succeed the retired Concorde, but with up to three times as many seats and the potential to fly from Tokyo to New York in six hours, officials and reports say.

Aerospace experts and engineers continue to work on the task not just in the project's home countries, but across Europe - most notably in Germany and the Czech Republic. One such haven of project work is Dresden, Germany's aerospace capital. Astrophysicist Genevieve St. Claire, acting director of Safran's Germany team and project envoy, is optimistic about the project's international ties.

She notes, "(Safran) has the power and potential to forge great success, as well as aerospace alliances, with this incarnation of the supersonic jet. It's important to remember that work on the project is not limited to its countries of inception, and as such, it is truly a global effort." St. Claire and the team temporarily based out of Dresden Institute of Technology are currently working on a supersonic device to silence Mach waves.

In the Czech Republic, Japan's commissioned employees are a bit less enthusiastic about the project's long-term applications, yet remain dedicated. Engineer Zbigniew Sosnowski at Charles University of Prague, working on the jet's linear design under commission of Mitsubishi Heavy, frowns at Germany's general thoughts that the project research will be well underway by 2008.

"It could not even have wings by then. It may remain in its infancy. But this project shows great promise and we are constantly working to make it concrete reality."

Scifeye LLC Set to Introduce Asset Tracking Technology

New company forms to commercialize groundbreaking technology that adds free-space optical communication capabilities to CMOS imaging sensors

The roundup of worldwide investigators fulfills a primary mission of ISASI, to promote aviation safety by improving the accident investigation process. This year’s seminar will highlight relevant topics using the theme “Investigating New Frontiers in Safety” (www.ISASI2005.com).

Keynote speaker for the meeting is John Goglia, former board member of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the first member of the board to hold an FAA aircraft mechanic certificate. Speakers lined up for the meeting are experts in accident investigation, and many of them hold flight safety positions on government regulatory boards. Main topics slated for presentation include a review of recent investigations, accident data analysis, sharing industry information, managing post-accident stress, and crewmember perspectives of accidents.

According to Curt Lewis, president of the DFW ISASI chapter and seminar chair, air safety investigators train in proper investigation procedures, biohazards, interview and photography techniques, crash site survey, human factors, and engine mechanics—along with a slew of other specialized areas.

“We are a diverse organization, but our members share one goal. We all believe that air safety is practicable and sustainable. With continuing technological advances and training, we believe we can consistently achieve safer air travel,” Lewis said.

That claim is backed by statistics compiled from international regulatory transportation safety boards, insurance companies, and regional news media, which show a consistent decrease in fatal passenger flight accidents in the last decade. From a passenger’s standpoint, 2004 was the safest year in aviation since World War II.

And so it seems fitting that these probing pioneers of aircraft accident investigations will head to Fort Worth, a city whose roots are emblazoned in frontier heritage.

Jennic Announces Availability of Evaluation Kit for Single Chip ZigBee Device With Choice of Stacks from Korwin and Luxoft

Company demonstrates first ZigBee solutions using its single system-on-chip IEEE802.15.4 device in home automation and industrial automation at Oslo open house.

Luxoft Labs, a major Eastern European design outsourcing company and recently announced as stack partner by Jennic, will demonstrate its ‘meshnetics’ system for building and industrial monitoring using Jennic’s chip running the ZigBee network stack and TinyOS operating system. Luxoft Labs develops the hardware and software for complete sensing and control solutions in machine-to-machine and industrial automation applications.

Jennic’s evaluation kit enables the development of sensor network applications for ZigBee networks based on its JS24Z121 IEEE802.15.4 single chip transceiver/microcontroller device. New Generation of Highly Conductive Inks Making RFID Tags Better, Smaller

Majority of the “mobility enabling“ features are hosted in IP Encapsulator, performing “time slicing“ and MPE FEC (forward error correction) accompanied with extended PSI/SI tables (Service and program information tables).

Unlike the DVB-S and DVB-T standards, DVB-H network is fully IP based where not only IP packets but also video and audio streams are encapsulated into IP packets.

U.S. Manufacturers Resist Natural Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Online Sales Leads

New study shows how poorly U.S. manufacturers use natural search engine optimization (SEO) as an online marketing strategy to generate new sales leads.

SHEC Labs plans Renewable Solar Hydrogen Pilot Plant

(PRWEB) June 1, 2021 -- SHEC-Lab's prototype solar hydrogen generator has now operated for approximately 1,200 hours with no noticeable coking or degradation of the catalysts. Hydrogen production is near the theoretical maximum at approximately 66% in the product gas stream with a 98.2% mol conversion of the feed methane. The estimated maximum hydrogen production with the unit is approximately 3,500 kg per year with minor modifications to the operating pressure and reactor configuration and an increase in the solar mirror area.

The next stage of development is anticipated to be a commercial-scale demonstration at a landfill gas site using 40,000 kg per year hydrogen production modules. This one project (a small-to-medium sized landfill gas project) will prevent more than 1.6 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) from entering the atmosphere over the next twenty years and will significantly improve local air quality and reduce smog. This one plant would consist of 30 modules for a total annual production of 1.2 million kg of hydrogen per year. (550 million cubic feet).

SHEC-Labs is currently in the process of capitalizing to deploy its first commercial scale plant. Once this plant is operational, we will be able to copy it a hundred or a thousand times or more.

The next generation of solar hydrogen involves direct water splitting with only water as the primary feed component. According to SHEC scientists, six of the ten steps needed for this process are already integrated into the current system.

About hydrogen production.
More than 95% of hydrogen produced today is by the Steam Methane Reformation (SMR) of fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas, a process that liberates massive amounts of carbon dioxide and other pollutants to the atmosphere. The SMR process provides a net energy loss of 30 to 35% when converting methane into hydrogen since a great deal of fossil energy or electrical power is required to operate the process. Hydrogen is also produced by electrolysis, a process that uses electricity to convert water into hydrogen and oxygen. Although electrolysis itself can be quite efficient in converting electricity into hydrogen, the electricity used for electrolysis is often primarily generated from fossil fuels. Therefore, traditional hydrogen production methods result in a net increase in air pollution and are highly inefficient from an energy conversion perspective.

Solar hydrogen production provides a net energy gain when converting methane into hydrogen since the energy used to drive the process is from the sun. Since SMR is not typically cost-effective at small to moderate production levels, SHEC's technology is particularly attractive for smaller and distributed hydrogen production. The environmental benefits of generating hydrogen using renewable energy include significant greenhouse gas reductions, and the reduction of smog precursors, acid gases, and mercury as a result of reduced local need for oil, coal, and natural gas.

To add even greater value, the process has the ability to use a renewable source of methane and carbon dioxide, such as biogas from municipal wastewater plants and landfill gas. Renewable methane generated from biomass results in no net increase of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere when the methane is converted into hydrogen by SHEC's solar hydrogen generator.

Why produce hydrogen?
The current market for hydrogen is approximately 42 billion kg per year and growing, and is used primarily in ammonia fertilizer manufacturing, for hydrogenation in the food and beverage industry, and in petroleum refining to reduce the sulfur content of fossil fuels.

Hydrogen is also an energy carrier and is recognized by many as the fuel of the future. When hydrogen is consumed by a fuel cell, its only significant emissions are water and heat. A clean source of hydrogen will lead to energy self-sufficiency and clean air and clean water.

The U.S. will increase natural gas imports 700% during the next 20 years and will HAVE to import more than 25% of its gasoline by 2025.

SHEC foresees it hydrogen production technologies as a way to fill some of this demand.

Shorter Order-To-Cash Time is Key to Success

Shorter cycle time – order-to-cash – is seen as the key success factor in pleasing customers and increasing market share

Framingham, MA (PRWEB) June 1, 2021 -- There is probably nothing more important than short order-to-cash cycle times. Customers expect – and demand – that their suppliers quickly respond to their wants and needs, delivering perfect quality products in less time than ever before. Reducing cycle times is often a good place to start in the overall effort to improve operations because it can often be done without large capital investment to implement new production capacity and business systems. Consequently, many manufacturers are streamlining internal and external supply operations in order to reduce overall order-to-cash cycle time and increase capacity.

Until the nineties, customers generally evaluated a supplier’s performance on four factors: product performance (features), price, quality, and delivery within a reasonable timeframe. Now customers are increasingly emphasizing two performance criteria: flawless delivery, i.e., very short-cycle on-time delivery, and responsiveness to the customers’ changing needs. Flawless delivery and responsiveness can very often be the difference in getting new customers and keeping old ones.

CEOs and others in top management are revisiting existing strategies and operational tactics. This has led many to pursue new initiatives and directions, including:
- Demand Management—Using improved sales and operations planning and sales forecasting processes to provide a real handle on demand and supply.
- Cross-functional integration—Redesigning order-to-cash and other key processes to connect processes across the enterprise.
- Lean Manufacturing—Radically redesigning information flow and material flow processes for dramatically shorter cycle times, lower costs, minimum inventory and near perfect delivery performance.

As more and more customers insist their orders be promptly delivered and at a precise time, reducing cycle time becomes the pivotal point in a supplier order-to-delivery performance rating. A shorter order-to-cash cycle time also has other implications, including reduced inventories, lower costs, and more effective use of resources. In addition, experience has shown that production throughput can improve dramatically once the order-to-cash cycle time is substantially reduced. An added set of benefits affects the bottom line in lower operating expenses, dramatically decreased requirements for working capital, and increased profit margins.

Cycle times can often be reduced without investing in a lot of expensive new information technology or other capital investments. First, analyze each of the many sub-processes involved in the entire process. It is important to determine how much of the cycle time involves tasks that add real value as distinct from activities that do not add value; waiting time or queues, for example. Dividing the value-added time by the total cycle time used (including queue time) generates an efficiency measure. Typically, value-added time is less than 10% of the total process cycle time.
