Lithium batteries are a unique style of batteries. Unlike most battery styles, they are available in both primary and secondary styles (nonrechargeable and rechargeable) with some varieties that cross between. Lithium batteries are backup power sources for electronic equipment that can be divided into two large groups: those providing full backup power to run a piece of equipment during a power outage; and memory backup, which does not provide active power to run a price of equipment. Instead it serves as a long-term power source so memory components can retain necessary information.
Lithium batteries consist of a lithium anode, which is an organic electrolyte that conducts the current, and a cathode. Lithium cobalt oxide, a material from which lithium can be easily removed, is the most common cathode compound. When the battery is charged, lithium ions are driven from the cathode into the anode; when the charge is removed, the lithium flows back to the cathode.

Dialog Semiconductor Launches New Integrated General Purpose Power Management Controller
Dialog Semiconductor Plc has launched a new general purpose device for use as a core building block in power management sub-systems in portable electronics equipment, audio players, cellular handsets and digital cameras. The new DA9025 high performance power management controller takes a system level approach to managing the multiple power domains and voltage requirements of lithium powered portable applications, integrating a number of functions and interfacing directly with a battery pack.
Kirchheim/Teck, Germany (PRWEB) September 26, 2005 -- Dialog Semiconductor Plc (NASDAQ: DLGS, FWB: DLG) has launched a new general purpose device for use as a core building block in power management sub-systems in portable electronics equipment, audio players, cellular handsets and digital cameras. The new DA9025 high performance power management controller takes a system level approach to managing the multiple power domains and voltage requirements of lithium powered portable applications, integrating a number of functions and interfacing directly with a battery pack.
Containing four low power, high performance, low dropout regulators based on Dialog Semiconductor’s unique ‘Smart Mirror™’ technology, a real time clock supply and a high efficiency buck converter, the new IC fits between the simple single function device such as a low dropout regulator (LDO) or switching converter, and sophisticated system-on-chip ICs. The main benefit of this approach is that it reduces the cost and PCB overhead of having to build in multiple off-the-shelf, low-integration power management components from multiple vendors.
The DA9025 can be used both standalone with pre-determined power-up sequence for simple operation, or controlled by an I2C bus for greater control and programmability of output voltages and power in individual blocks.
Power efficiency and therefore longer battery life is enabled using Dialog Semiconductor’s patented and unique Smart Mirror™ architecture – a technology that optimizes quiescent current consumption by matching it to the current demand and performance required, removing the need for a low power mode and the associated hardware and software overhead.
Typical handheld applications for the DA9025 include those with a lithium power source, processor controlling the main functionality, memory, external peripherals such as a display, memory expansion such as SD or MMC card and some analog functionality such as data conversion or sensor interfacing.
Such a system requires a number of different power domains. For example, the processor may typically require two supplies, a low voltage for its core to save power consumption and higher voltage to interface with the other devices. Analog functions tend to require higher voltages to guarantee operating headroom or provide powerful output drivers and display drivers tend to require higher voltages as display size and complexity increases.
The DA9025’s low dropout voltage regulators are designed specially for supplying stable voltages to various parts of the system. The low drop linear regulators are optimized for critical system parameters such as low noise, high power supply rejection or low quiescent current. Two of the LDOs may be used to supply audio or RF circuits as they are low noise and typically exhibit more than 80dB power supply rejection.
Battery supplies to the regulators are separated to maximize isolation. Under I2C control the regulator output voltage is also programmable. A fifth integrated regulator provides a supply for a real time clock. This is permanently active when the battery is connected but is a very low quiescent current design.
The integrated DC-DC buck converter has a programmable range of 0.85 to 3.3V, with a default supply of 1.8V at up to 400mA. In many systems the buck converter is used to power the system processor and memory. The buck converter may be set to operate in either synchronous or asynchronous modes to optimize operating efficiency depending on load current. The converter has integrated switching FETs and requires a minimum number of external components. Under I2C control the buck converter output voltage is also programmable allowing very low voltage processors to be used.
The DA9025 is available now in a 4 * 4mm 24 QFN package.

New Starch Spray System Boosts the Strength of Paper Products -- A Documented Case Study
Ronningen-Petter DCF self-cleaning filters play key role in new starch spray system that boosts strength of paper products. Corn Products turned to Ronningen-Petter for a DCF filter that is self-cleaning, self-contained, maintenance free, operated by PLC, and able to handle 150 gpm throughout as well as filter out any foreign material greater than 50 microns.
(PRWEB) September 23, 2005 -- United States paper mills and corrugated containers manufacturers have traditionally had access to inexpensive virgin fiber that could be mixed with hardwood or softwood to reach required strength. That has changed in recent years, with increasing dependence on recycled fiber sources, especially for linerboard and medium grades.
However, as the fibers are recycled, they get shorter and weaker which results in a lower grade product with less final sheet strength. Synthetic additives to enhance product strength have often been prohibitively expensive in a marketplace where profit margins have been ravaged by declining paper prices.
Now, a cost-effective starch spray solution has emerged in the United States that is designed to boost paper strength (up to 100% in IGT, 25% in Concora, and 20% in CFC and Mullen) while cutting fiber use by replacing much of the fiber with starch. Essentially, special spray nozzles apply an unmodified starch suspension to the fiber web of paper products to increase their internal strength and improve their surface properties. The starch stays internally on formed sheets and gelatinizes while drying.
Starch supplier Corn Products recently introduced the technology to the US after adapting it from one widely used in Europe and Latin America, where sources of virgin fiber have been scarce for decades. In its starch spraying system, process water mixes with starch to create slurry that flows into a run tank, which is sprayed onto the sheet former.
Filtering closed mill systems.
One key to making the starch spraying system work was proper filtering. This was all the more important since many paper mills now run closed systems in response to environmental regulations limiting water discharge and requiring process water re-use instead of adding fresh water.
"Getting the filtering right was critical, especially for closed systems where process water contains a lot of suspended trash," said a Corn Products representative. "Dirt, grit, metal shavings, anything on the floor of a paper mill that goes into the drain ends up in process water and needs to be filtered. Otherwise, it will plug up the spray nozzles, and could degrade paper quality, destroy sheets traveling at 4,000 ft/min, or even the paper forming wire that can cost upwards of $10,000 to replace."
Initially, Corn Products used two disposable basket-screen filters at a commercial trial location, mixing fresh water with process water in a 50:50 ratio.
"We couldn't keep the basket filters clean," said the representative. "Their surface area was too small and their throughput too low. Every 30-minutes a basket strainer plugged. We would have to tear it apart, clean it, and reassemble it. By that time, the other basket filter was plugged up. Since there was no way to sustain operation with the basket filters not performing, we stopped the trial."
A self-cleaning filter solution.
In the search for starch spraying filtration solution, the starch manufacturer turned to RPA Process Technologies (formerly Ronningen-Petter). RPA has installed thousands of industrial filtration systems worldwide in over 10,000 distinct applications.
A number of criteria for the proper filtration system were determined by collaboration between the two manufacturers. The filters would have to be self-cleaning, self-contained, maintenance-free, operated by PLC, and able to handle 150-gpm throughput as well as filter out any foreign material greater than 50-microns, which could disrupt paper formation.
Based on these criteria, Corn Products installed two Ronningen-Petter DCF-1600 filters on each starch spraying system, one for primary water filtration, and another for secondary starch slurry filtration.
With the DCF self-cleaning filter, process water enters the top inlet and passes through the screen. The screen holds any particles over 50-microns while cleaned water leaves through the bottom outlet. A cleaning disc moves up and down the filter screen, removing debris. With the aid of the downward fluid flow and the disc movement, the debris is deposited in a holding chamber at the bottom of the filter housing and regularly purged through a valve at the bottom of the chamber.
"The DCF self-cleaning filters are a night and day improvement over labor-intensive disposable filters," said the Corn Products representative. "The DCF filters have a much higher throughput, a larger surface area, and automated PLC-programmable clean and purge cycles that can be tailored to specific water configurations at each paper mill."

Kaolin Slurry, a Documented Case Study -- How a Self-cleaning Filtration Unit Handled the Hard-to-Filter Material at a Lower Cost
Kaolin slurry's particle configuration makes it difficult filter, i.e. its structural characteristics can vary with the regional sources of the mineral, which can cause fluctuations in throughput and pressure drop through the screen. This article outlines how the Ronningen-Petter DCF Filter was able to tackle this difficult material, all at a lower cost!
(PRWEB) September 22, 2005 -- A Ronningen-Petter® DCF-1600 four station multiplex, self-cleaning filter system from RPA Process Technologies has successfully replaced traditional vibrating gravity screens in a kaolin slurry processing application.
The DCF-1600 filtration system was installed not only to cope with the many screening problems associated with kaolin slurry filtration, but also to match the increased product flow following an upgrade of the process that doubled plant output.
Kaolin slurry's particle configuration makes it difficult filter, i.e. its structural characteristics can vary with the regional sources of the mineral, which can cause fluctuations in throughput and pressure drop through the screen.
The DCF-1600 system is designed to operate at pressures up to 10.5 bar, which provides a significant safety margin for any operational variations. Its slotted, wedge wire screen can accommodate the full range of particle sizes present in the kaolin slurry, and can provide retention of particles ranging in size from 15 microns to 1125 microns.
The DCF-1600 system's screens are cleaned by a disc, which moves up and down the filter screen parallel to the liquid flow, and mechanically scrapes off the debris in a continuous operation that does not interrupt production. The waste purged from the filter is highly concentrated.
The system also requires minimum maintenance because it does not require motor repairs, and periodic screen replacement and adjustment maintenance is significantly less than with the original vibrating screens. In addition the operator does not need to be continually on hand to monitor the filtration process. The differential pressure across the filter, which provides a good indication of the filter performance, can also be automatically monitored.
According to RPA, the installation of the DCF-1600 filtration system has resulted in increased throughput, high product quality, reduced labor costs and maintenance and downtime, and a reduction in floor space requirement of 70%.
If you would like to learn more about this technology, please contact the Ask Filter Man forum at http://www.rpaprocess.com/Ask-Filter-Man-Blog.asp.
RPA Process Technologies integrates five leading names in filtration, liquid/solid separation and high-viscosity mixing/extrusion, i.e. Ronningen-Petter, Aoustin, Filtres Philippe, Filtres Vernay, and Malaxeurs Guittard.

Aseptic Packaging Manufacturers Must Control Capital and Overall Expenditure to Sustain Market Growth
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (chemicals.frost.com), U.S. Aseptic Packaging Markets, reveals that revenue in this industry totaled $4.61billion in 2004 and can reach $5.31 billion in 2011.
Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) September 21, 2005 -- Sophisticated aseptic packaging equipment has found great acceptance in the United States in the last few years. To sustain this momentum, the companies in these markets should overcome the significant challenges of high capital costs and the associated expenditure incurred in installations and employing experienced technicians.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.chemicals.frost.com), U.S. Aseptic Packaging Markets, reveals that revenue in this industry totaled $4.61billion in 2004 and can reach $5.31 billion in 2011.
If you are interested in a virtual brochure, which provides manufacturers, end users, and other industry participants an overview of the latest analysis of the U.S. Aseptic Packaging Markets, then send an email to Trisha Bradley, Corporate Communications, at e-mail protected from spam bots with your full name, company name, title, telephone number, fax number and e-mail address. Upon receipt of the above information, an overview will be sent to you by e-mail.
“To boost revenues, manufacturers of aseptic packaging equipment should highlight benefits such as extended shelf life and lower distribution costs and attempt to decrease the overall production costs,” explain Frost & Sullivan Research Analysts Ravi S. Sankar and Anupama Ramaswamy.
These companies must capitalize on their equipment sophistication, minimum distribution costs, and advanced technologies to provide better customer value in terms of creativity and comfort, ultimately spurring revenue growth.
“Aseptic packaging, based on the technique of high-temperature-less time, is ideal for the beverage market that has products with new flavors and high nutritional value and which are thermally sensitive,” elaborates Ramaswamy.
To profit from this favorable trend, enterprises should adeptly handle the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation allowing only hydrogen peroxide as a cleaning agent for sterilization of filling equipment. The manufacturers, on the other hand, prefer a sanitizer composed of peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide that is more suitable for the turbulent airflow in rotary fillers.
Because of this FDA restriction, only linear equipment was widely used until recently for aseptic filling operations. The low filling rate and productivity of the linear filling equipment leaves rotary filling equipment as the only competitive aseptic technology in the markets.
To counter this, aseptic packagers must concentrate on research and development to improve equipment efficiency and accommodate hydrogen peroxide in high-speed rotary machines.
“In addition, manufacturers need to overcome the increasing risk of contamination in the operation and distribution processes,” points out Sankar. “Aseptic packagers must adhere to strict cleaning and sanitation policies and insist on zero-tolerance policy for errors at all times.”
Notably, these companies should provide in-depth training during the engineering, testing, and installation stages, emphasizing on building-up the knowledge base of installation laborers. This will reduce the installation time along with the costs incurred in maintaining technicians and engineers on-site.
U.S. Aseptic Packaging Markets, a part of the Chemicals and Materials subscription, provides a comprehensive overview of the aseptic packaging markets in the United States, segmenting them into paperboard cartons, flexible packages, and plastic containers. It identifies the key market drivers and restraints pertaining to each segment and includes in-depth market and competitive analysis and strategies for market participants to better their market positions. Executive summaries and analyst interviews are available to the press.

Internet Marketing: Has Traditional Web Site Optimization (SEO) Outlived Its Usefulness?
When it comes to internet marketing, traditional web site optimization (SEO) still stands as the holy grail, but an increasing number of small and medium sized business owners, facing the prospect of high SEO fees, are just now beginning to turn to an alternative promotional method that is generating consistent and quantifiable results at a fraction of the cost.
LOS ANGELES, CA (PRWEB) September 21, 2005 - The cost of SEO, at least when it comes to highly competitive keyword phrases, is prohibitive for all but those with deep pockets.
"Matt Hocken, of Interactive Marketing, Inc., estimates that one can expect to pay upwards of $50,000 - $100,000 a year to secure top ten Google placement for a highly competitive keyword phrase like 'life insurance' or 'debt consolidation' and that's obviously out of the question for the small to medium sized business," Ron Scott, Fast Track SEOP's senior publicist reports.
Even the cost for placement using less popular keyword phrases can be high.
"A Houston publicist recently paid $5,000 to get her website optimized for a small number of obscure keyword phrases that Overture reports are cumulatively generating fewer than 200 inquiries a month. Not told that 50-75% of those searches are being routinely conducted by webmasters, SEOs, and website owners checking the current status of their websites, she's now wondering if she'll ever recoup the expense," Scott says.
So what’s the alternative? Pop-ups? Pop unders? Banner ads? Email? Not hardly.
Unlike an organic search engine optimization program that can take months and even years to start showing results, internet press releases start generating interest the day they are published.
"A properly optimized and distributed press release will typically generate 50,000 - 100,000 actual reads the first week it goes on line," says Scott.
According to Scott, unlike traditional press releases, 98% of all internet press releases are read by consumers and B2B prospects.
"Originally, press releases were the exclusive domain of the Fortune 500 and were directed to the mass media, but not any more. Small and medium sized businesses have discovered that they can deliver their messages directly to a broad (national or international) or highly targeted (local or regional) audience on the internet and, thereby, eliminate the tedious process of media placement," he says.
Scott points out that the value of an internet press release promotional strategy doesn’t stop there.
"Press releases can also be optimized for organic search which enables those who find their newly published websites residing in Google purgatory, the opportunity to secure top ten rankings in a week or less," Scott says.
To illustrate the value of the internet marketing strategy, Scott points to a release he prepared and distributed on behalf of a little known manufacturer in New Zealand.
"The first 30 calendar days, it generated 133,686 reads, drove over 25,000 visitors to their website, and generated 100s of inquiries from B2B prospects all over the world," he says. "Since that sampling taken at the beginning of June, the release has generated an additional 42,443 reads and a commensurate level of traffic and inquiries.
"It's the gift that keeps giving," he says.
Has traditional web site optimization outlived its usefulness?
"For most of our clients it has," Scott says.
To introduce business owners to the comparative value of an internet, press release promotional strategy, Fast Track SEOP offers free, online introductory webinars four days a week. The company, a full-service internet public relations firm, has developed an online training program that enables business owners to manage their press release promotional campaigns in-house. Fuel Protests, Petrol, Supply Shock, Peak Oil and a Challenge by Futurist Writer "T Ray Deal" to Sir Richard Branson of Virgin
Peak Oil is where the World appears to be running out of Oil far sooner than it is. The book 'Unlimited Energy' set in 2022 Singapore, contains two key ways of delaying the financial crisis that can be brought about by 'PEAK OIL.' But it needs a 'HERO' to start things going.' The Author reveals his stratergy
(PRWEB) September 15, 2005 -- Firstly, Peak Oil has been brought about by our becoming addicted to the ‘Energy Machine,’ namely consumerism, 24/7 working and a politically driven perception that continued growth without predicting the consequence is good.
Whilst we won’t run out of oil soon, we will be subjected to price and supply shocks regularly from now on. This is because demand is now starting to outweigh the ability to pump and refine...The basic meaning of 'Peak Oil'.
The stability of the world's oil supply depends on a few; some would say only five, major fields.
Oil is now being pumped almost to its maximum and in some cases is being over pumped by pushing more water back down the wells than is good for them. Refineries are now approaching their maximum capacity.
This capacity was, presumably, accurately calculated quite some time ago by the oil companies based on the peak oil predictions of the time. It is unlikely that more capacity will be required, because Oil production won’t be there to make it necessary (Type "Hubbert’s Curve" in Google).
The consequence: Oil prices are pushed up so that the value of asset bases and profits of the oil companies’ increase. This means they can now afford to explore and produce Oil from sites that were previously not profitable.
The current investment program to find more Oil by the Oil-men will not suffice in anything but the short term and produces, price and supply shocks that create uncertainty, inflation and instability.
The day that we produce one barrel less than we need, will see the start of hyper-inflation as the cost of Oil as a raw material for Cement, Fertilizers, and medicines etc goes up and up.
The first part of the solution is to rapidly increase investment in Alternative Energy supplies. Under-investment has occurred for many reasons.
Now that energy prices are going ever upward most of these reasons are invalid. It is absolutely essential that we keep the price of Oil down by reducing our need for it. Plus we need to conserve Oil to make essential goods, many of which can then be recycled.
Translation of scientific data from expert sources into a reader enjoyable and understandable form to promote alternative energy.
The near-future Sci Fi book for women and men, ‘Unlimited Energy’ contains two main themes that can be researched;
Solar Towers that can be used to produce large amounts of energy which could, green deserts, clear pollution from towns and supply much of the developing World’s needs.
Solar energy converted to electricity by new plastic solar-panels. This is then used to refine Aluminum from its oxide, Aluminum, volume for volume, when burnt in oxygen, produces more heat, than oil, produces no pollution and can be transported safely anywhere. It can be then recycled back to Aluminum, again and again.
The Challenge to Sir Richard Branson from T Ray Deal:
The World needs an Honest and Clear Sighted Business Leader to take up the challenge of finding the ‘Pure Path’ to alternative energy production. Please seriously consider helping the World stave of disaster by showing us the way.
Even you, will be amazed at the support you will get. You have already been sent one idea by the writer that will help you finance the 'Quest.'
'Unlimited Energy' is available from many on-line bookstores, but please remember your local, walk-in store.

Handheld X-Ray Device Ensures Speedy Spot Checks
X-Ray Imaging Solutions' new handheld imaging scope, SPYder, allows security personnel to conduct thorough inspections in seconds.
Cary, IL (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) September 12, 2005 -- X-Ray Imaging Solutions, Inc.'s newly launched handheld imaging scope, SPYder, will allow security personnel to conduct spot checks and thorough inspections in seconds.
"Until today, X-ray scanners were either large, immobile units or low-quality handheld devices," says Glen Thomas of X-Ray Imaging Solutions. "The SPYder draws upon our extensive experience in the X-ray imaging industry to deliver high-quality images literally at your fingertips."
Weighing just 10 pounds, the SPYder uses a 12-volt handle-mounted battery pack and can be set up in just three minutes. A handle-mounted LCD display screen shows images from a field of view of 40 mm. The SPYder can also be mounted on bomb squad robots, with an ability to transmit its images back via either WiFi or video cable.
Unlike earlier isotope-based handheld devices, the SPYder uses an X-ray tube-based imaging system, eliminating the need for NRC licensing, constant replacement of isotopes, depleted isotope disposal and transportation issues. With a SPYder in hand, security personnel will be able to scan a backpack or a package in minutes.
"We live in a day and age when speed is of the essence, when efficiently and rapidly gathered information can often save lives," says Thomas. "With the SPYder, security agencies can now be secure that they have the latest tool in their armory in their fight against terror."
