Goodyear Completes Sale of Indonesian Rubber Plantation
AKRON, Ohio, August 9, 2005 – The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has completed the previously announced sale of its stake in Goodyear Sumatra Plantations (GSP) to Bridgestone Corporation for approximately $62 million, subject to post-closing adjustments.
Goodyear said the decision to sell its 95 percent stake in GSP is consistent with its strategy to focus on core business activities.
Goodyear is one of the largest users of natural rubber in the world and supports agricultural and economic initiatives that encourage its development. This transaction is not expected to significantly impact the company’s ability to acquire natural rubber for its operations.
GSP, which began operations in North Sumatra, Indonesia in 1917, has approximately 5,000 employees.
Goodyear recorded a non-cash after-tax charge of $15.6 million (8 cents per share) in the fourth quarter of 2004 in connection with the transaction due primarily to the write-off of cumulative foreign currency translation.
Goodyear is the world’s largest tire company. Headquartered in Akron, Ohio, the company manufactures tires, engineered rubber products and chemicals in more than 90 facilities in 28 countries. It has marketing operations in almost every country around the world. Goodyear employs about 80,000 people worldwide.

Energy Power Resources
Columbus McKinnon Corporation, Sarasota Florida Operations, is pleased to announce the sale of its first new Primary Shredder. The machine has been sold to Energy Power Resources located in Bristol, England and will be operated by Tyre Collection Services Ltd in West Midlands, England. The machine is the first of its kind to be used in the United Kingdom marketplace.
The new Primary Shredder has been under design for the past two years and was first introduced at the ITRA Trade Show and Exposition in Nashville, Tennessee in April 2001. This larger, more robust machine is capable of processing steel belted passenger car, truck, super single, farm implement and light off-road tires. The system can be configured either to process whole tire for disposal or as a pre-processor to pre-cut larger tires for further processing. Unlike many pre-shredders, it has also been design to work as a stand-alone unit in conjunction with a screen to produce chips of multiple sizes for TDF, Civil Engineering or Crumb Rubber applications.
The machine is capable of processing 100% truck and super single tires at a rate of 14 tons per hour on a single pass or 5 tons per hour when producing 2"/50MM chips. The machine's unique twin drive system utilizes dual 100 hp motors and is extremely efficient.
The machine's knife system utilizes the patented CM "Double Stack" ™ knife arrangement that allows users the ability to re-use knives multiple times, therefore, drastically reducing the operational costs of the machine.
Michael Playdon, International Sales Manager, for CM was quoted as saying "This installation is particularly significant to CM due to the fact that the machine was specifically designed for processing European type super single tires. It demonstrates CM's commitment and dedication to providing our European customers with a robust and reliable alternative to processing these heavier type of tires".
Columbus McKinnon Corporation is the world's leading manufacturer of systems that are specifically designed for the reduction of scrap tires of all sizes.

Cimpor Cement
Columbus McKinnon Corporation, Sarasota Florida Operations, is pleased to announce the sale of two stationary tire-shredding systems in Brazil. The two systems where sold to Cia. DE Cimentos DO Brazil, or more commonly referred to as Cimpor Cement, one of the leading manufactures of Portland Cement in Brazil.
Cimpor Cement will be working very closely with the tire manufactures in Brazil who will be supplying the tires for the system. The tires will be shredded into 2-inch chips and used as a supplemental fuel, along with coal, in their rotary kilns.
The project is one of the first of its kind that will be addressing the new legislation that will take effect in Brazil on January 1, 2002. This legislation makes the tire manufactures responsible for the proper disposal and recycling of the tires.
Michael Playdon, International Sales Manager for CM, was quoted as saying that the "Columbus McKinnon's Tire Shredding System was the system of choice due to its ability to process steel belted passenger car and truck tires to a consistently sized chip, as well as, provide chips that were cut cleanly with little to no protruding or exposed steel".
Chips, that are cut cleanly with very little exposed steel, do not cling together and, therefore, do not adversely affect material handling systems that feed the tire chips to the kilns. It also allows the kilns to be feed more evenly allowing the temperatures to be held within the operations specifications.
The first system will be shipped in November with the second system shipping in December and will be commissioned soon thereafter. Columbus McKinnon reports that these are the first systems of their kind to be shipped to South America. Currently, CM has tire-shredding systems operating in 12 foreign countries.

Lakin Tire
Columbus McKinnon Corporation, Sarasota Florida is pleased to announce the sale of a CM Tire Shredding System to Lakin Tire West in Santa Fe Springs, California. This is the fourth CM unit sold to Lakin and the first for their California operations.
"Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" are very familiar words for Lakin Tire West. Collecting and processing in excess of 10 million tires a year seems like a large enough undertaking by itself, however, finding a home for all of those tires is even more incredible. But that's exactly where the people at Lakin Tire West excel. The majority of their yearly tires are sorted and inspected with good used tires destined for either retread or the global used tire market. The tires that are scrap are either disposed of whole as Tire Derived Fuel (TDF) or shredded and marketed as TDF or into Civil Engineering applications.
Known in the industry for producing high volume tire shredding equipment, capable of producing specifically sized chips, CM designed a custom system with a special footprint that would integrate with existing conveyor and screening equipment already in place at the Lakin facility.
According to Rick Colyar, National Sales Manager for CM Sarasota Operations, "The Columbus McKinnon Tire Shredder was chosen because its reliability and for its ability to process tires that are cleanly cut with very little exposed wire, which were specific requirements for Lakin's TDF and Civil Engineering Markets."
Columbus McKinnon Corporation is the world's leading manufacturer of systems that are specifically designed and manufactured for the reduction of scrap tires of all sizes and has systems operating in 12 foreign countries.

Goodyear Names GM for Global Off-the-Road Tires
AKRON, Ohio, June 29, 2005 - A leader in Goodyear chemical operations has been named general manager for global off-the-road tires, effective June 24.
John Sweeney, former general manager for chemical since November 2004, said he seeks to improve OTR operations and financial performance. The business has faced an industry-wide product shortage since last year.
"We must refocus on customer and end-user needs. In these challenging times, demand has risen dramatically, and we must take the necessary steps to lessen the impact of this shortage on their operations," Sweeney said.
"Long term, we must develop a model that allows Goodyear and its customers to profit at both low-demand and high-demand levels in this cyclical business."
Sweeney’s career has been spent in finance assignments at Goodyear Engineered Products facilities in Nebraska and Iowa. He transferred to the Chemical Division in 1999. Prior to being named general manager of Chemical, he served in various positions in that business, including director of tire polymers and division controller.
He joined Goodyear in 1982 as an accountant in the Tire Division. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Akron in 1981.

Goodyear’s Assurance Featuring TripleTred Technology Wins IDEA Design Award
AKRON, Ohio, June 27, 2005 – Goodyear’s popular "any condition" tire, Assurance featuring TripleTred Technology, won a Silver IDEA in the 2005 Industrial Design Excellence Awards, North America’s leading tiremaker announced today.
The competition, co-sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and BusinessWeek magazine, evaluates designs for five areas of excellence: innovation, aesthetics, user benefits, business impact and ecological responsibility. Products from companies such as Apple, Nike, BMW and Microsoft were awarded IDEAs in the competition. Goodyear’s Assurance featuring TripleTred Technology was the only tire honored.
"Winning an IDEA award for Assurance featuring TripleTred Technology is a tremendous distinction for our design team," said Joseph M. Gingo, Goodyear’s executive vice president, Quality Systems and chief technology officer. "The award indicates a design is one of the very best in the world."
Goodyear’s Assurance featuring TripleTred Technology was designed to be visually arresting, and its eye-catching sinuous and sculpted directional tread pattern is as attractive as it is functional. The aggressive appearance also helps retailers explain the tire’s benefits and technology to consumers.
The tire incorporates three unique tread zones for superior traction in any kind of weather. A unique Water Zone consisting of deeply carved Aquachutes propel water away from the tire’s tread to assure more tire contact with the road when the surface is rain-drenched. An interlocking tread pattern creates an Ice Zone which translates into more gripping power on icy or snow-covered roads. A Dry Zone rounds out the three tread element areas, enhanced by reinforced tire shoulders for confident maneuvering around curves, potholes and unexpected road debris on dry pavement.
Assurance featuring TripleTred technology also incorporates scientific advances in rubber compounding, including the use of fiberglass fibers and volcanic sand in the tire’s winter formulated compound, which allows the tire to maintain flexibility in cold weather.
The extremely popular tire is one of Goodyear’s most-awarded products ever, including recent recognition from Popular Science and Popular Mechanics magazines and a finalist for the Automotive News PACE Award. The critical praise has translated into tremendous commercial success, as the Assurance line is the most successful new product launch in Goodyear’s history.
The Industrial Design Excellence Awards are dedicated to fostering business and public understanding of the importance of industrial design excellence to the quality of life and the economy.
Goodyear is the world’s largest tire company. Headquartered in Akron, Ohio, the company manufactures tires, engineered rubber products and chemicals in more than 80 facilities in 28 countries. Hi-Tech, Inland and Hoffman Form Strategic Alliance as Single Source
ANAHEIM, Calif. (June 10, 2005) — Hi-Tech Rubber, Inland Technologies and A.C. Hoffman Engineering have formed a strategic alliance to serve as a single source for high-quality precision plastic and elastomeric components from prototype to high-volume production.
The three Southern California companies now offer OEM’s state-of-the-art injection molding of liquid silicones, thermoplastics, TPE’s, high-consistency silicone elastomers and organics, high-volume flashless molding of organics and silicones, and sub-component assembly.
“Hi-Tech, Inland and Hoffman have joined forces so that we can offer one-stop shopping to medical-device customers who needhigh-quality precisionplastic and elastomeric components,” said Bill Sherman, President of Hi-Tech Rubber.
“Our clients have always counted on our proprietary know-how to produce the most cost-efficient and high-performing products,” said Glenn Crossno, President of Inland Technologies. “Now we can provide integrated engineering solutions for plastic and rubber assemblies.”
Tom Jenkins, President of A.C. Hoffman, predicted that the combined services will appeal to OEM’s. “Together we can serve a dynamic new group of medical and industrial customers, especially with the opening of a new 55,000-square-foot manufacturing facility with clean-room molding in July 2005,” he said.
The strategic alliance of Hi-Tech, Inland and Hoffman arises from having common parent companies. Red Diamond Capital and Century Park Capital Partners, private equity firms based in New York and Los Angeles, respectively, acquired Hi-Tech in March 2004 and Inland in April 2005. Hi-Tech acquired Hoffman in October 2004.
The companies have assembled a team of hands-on professionals with diverse backgrounds in mold design and construction, continuous high-volume molding, custom material formulation, secondary operations, assembly, quality assurance, customer service, and sales and marketing.
“As contract manufacturers with decades in the medical-device industry, we have experienced people who make the difference,” Sherman said. “We operate in a dynamic, cohesive and customer-focused work environment. The end result is exceptional flexibility, optimum performance and resource utilization.”
Hi-Tech, Inland and Hoffman offer a comprehensive choice of processes and materials available. On most new projects, they can produce prototype parts in approximately two weeks and then rapidly move into full-scale production. Every production part goes through an extensive start-up procedure and ongoing process validation.
The companies offer support for design and process engineering, material engineering, rapid in-house prototype tooling, and custom assembly and subassembly work. In addition, they offer class 100,000 clean rooms and ship-to-stock service.
“Our people make it a point to understand all aspects of our customers’ business so they can work in partnership every step of the way,” Crossno said. “While expediting projects from initial design to full-scale production, we emphasize continuous quality while ensuring that the OEM’s new product gets to market quickly and cost-effectively.”
Hi-Tech, Inland and Hoffman personnel believe that quality is the cornerstone of all endeavors, according to Jenkins. “Strict adherence to cGMP guidelines, FDA and ISO 9001:2000 registrations demonstrate that we aggressively apply quality-focused techniques and philosophies to manufacture all products to a higher standard of quality,” he said. “We work as a team not just to meet, but to exceed, customer expectations.”
Hi-Tech, founded in 1982 and based in Anaheim, molds rubber into components for medical, technological and industrial industries. The company formulates and develops its own materials and offers an array of production processes. Hi-Tech has grown steadily by focusing on complex, difficult-to-mold parts for critical customer applications. Hi-Tech's proprietary engineering expertise, efficient high-volume production capabilities, competitive pricing and superior customer service have helped establish the company as a sole source supplier for over 80% of the components it manufactures.
Inland, founded in 1992 and headquartered in Fontana, is a leading supplier of precision injection-molded plastic components and assembly services to the medical industry. Inland offers its customers an integrated approach to designing and manufacturing precision plastic injection-molded products and provides a full range of services, from product and tooling design to mold fabrication, plastic injection molding and assembly.

Goodyear Expands Aviation Tire Evaluation into South Africa
AKRON, Ohio, May 24, 2005 - The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NYSE: GT) announced today that it has selected its second aviation tire evaluation center, the 43 Air School in Port Alfred, South Africa. This is Goodyear’s first center in the Southern Hemisphere.
The South African air school has 40 registered aircraft logging the hours of future commercial pilots. The academy also has an impeccable safety record.
Goodyear’s other evaluation facility is the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Similar to the Florida center, the 43 Air School will evaluate Goodyear and competitor tires based on their durability and safe landings. The school’s test results will be recorded and sent to the United States to measure Goodyear’s overall tire performance.
"Goodyear Proving Grounds around the world test passenger car, light truck, agriculture, medium truck and earthmover tires. But when it comes to aviation tires, we don’t have a fleet of airplanes landing and taking off," said Richard Brown, general aviation sales and marketing manager.
"For about 25 years, we’ve relied on Embry-Riddle to provide a controlled environment with many planes and many flights that generate landings. To evaluate aircraft tire performance, we need aircraft and we need landings to provide data quickly," Brown said.
Four years ago, the company used Embry-Riddle to develop the Flight Custom III tire for general aviation. Goodyear’s marketing agreement with the aeronautical university includes evaluations, promotions and testimonials on aviation tire performance, he said.
The 43 Air School will be used to evaluate tires on aircraft built and flown in the Southern Hemisphere. "The facility will make us more competitive in that part of the world," Brown said.
The company also is looking at other flight training schools to expand its evaluation capability, he added.
Goodyear is the world’s largest supplier of tires for commercial, military and general aviation aircraft. The company manufactures aviation tires in Danville, Va.; Bangkok, Thailand; and Sao Paulo, Brazil. NuSil Technology Introduces Pigmented Masterbatches For Liquid Silicone Rubber Formulations
NuSil Technology, a leading formulator and manufacturer of silicone compounds for healthcare, aerospace, electronics and photonics, recently launched its pigmented masterbatches for liquid silicone rubbers
(PRWEB) February 3, 2005 -- NuSil Technology, (www.nusil.com) a leading formulator and manufacturer of silicone compounds for healthcare, aerospace, electronics and photonics, recently announced the launch of it’s pigmented masterbatches for liquid silicone rubbers. www.nusil.com/tradenews/index.aspx
Targeted for companies serving the healthcare markets, these masterbatches meet Class VI biological testing requirements and are available as unrestricted (may be considered for use in long term implantable applications) and restricted (may be considered for short term implantable less than 30 days or for external applications) versions. “We realized that adding powder-based pigments (for example, titanium dioxide or barium sulfate) to silicone systems can be a messy and inaccurate process”, said Brian Nash, VP Marketing & Sales for NuSil Technology (www.nusil.com). “NuSil’s solution is to add pigment to vinyl functional polymers, creating an easy-to-use “solid/liquid” mass that can be added to elastomer systems”. www.nusil.com
The liquid silicone rubber pigmented masterbatches have a consistency similar to many liquid silicone rubbers. MED2-4800 (unrestricted) and MED2-4900 (restricted) contain 50% barium sulfate and MED3-4800 (unrestricted) and MED3-4900 (restricted) contain 50% titanium dioxide by weight. NuSil designed these products to be pumped by a third line into the dynamic mixing chamber in liquid injection molding equipment. This material can also be easily added by hand to other liquid silicone systems for compression molding (with a de-airing step after mixing).
NuSil formulates standard and customized silicone products based on the vast, unique array of properties the material provides. Product quality is assured by the company’s Quality System, which begins with an effective design protocol and continues up the supply chain from vendor qualification through re-inspection of finished product inventories.
