Top Doctors Gather at Annual International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery Convention in Sydney, Australia
Some of the world’s most renown hair transplant surgeons gathered this month to hear about the latest cutting edge methods in surgical hair restoration. Speakers included Robert M. Bernstein. M.D. founder of Bernstein Medical – Center for Hair Restoration.
NEW YORK, NY (PRWEB) September 28, 2005 -- The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) recently held their 13th annual scientific meeting. A broad range of topics were explored including; the most recent research in cloning, the latest proven medical therapies to prevent hair loss, and the newest concepts in the harvesting of donor hair follicles used for transplanting. The event was capped off with a live hair transplant surgery workshop.
As the largest non-profit voluntary organization comprised of over 650 hair restoration physicians, the ISHRS is the first international society created to promote continuing quality improvement and education for professionals in the field of surgical hair restoration.
The purpose of the annual event is to bring together the world’s best minds in hair restoration surgery for an interchange of ideas, knowledge and experience. The meeting is aimed at enhancing, to the highest possible level, the skills and artistry of the members.
One of this years exciting presentations was given by Robert M. Bernstein M.D., Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York. Dr. Bernstein is recognized world wide for his pioneering work in Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), considered to be the state-of-the-art in surgical hair restoration techniques.
Dr. Bernstein introduced a new instrument for FUE that enables hair to be removed directly from the back of the scalp without the need for a linear incision. The instrument increases ones ability to remove the hair in its naturally occurring groups with minimal damage. According to Dr. Bernstein, “FUE has been most useful for camouflaging the scars produced by hair transplants performed with older techniques.”
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery brought together a lively collection of panels led by doctors who were well-known and highly-respected professionals from the surgical hair restoration industry. Doctors such as Robert M. Bernstein M.D. shared their expertise in order to cover the issues and advances in medical and surgical hair restoration and the latest research developments in the field. The intention being better treatment and treatment options for patients.

Safety Issues: Public Safety and Health in the New Iraq
The Rebuilding Iraq Conference in Washington, DC, December 1-2, 2005, will feature a healthcare and family safety agenda organized by SafetyIssues.com and chaired by Houston surgeon Dr. Joseph Agris.
Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 27, 2005 -- The 5th Rebuilding Iraq Conference, to be held in Washington, DC, December 1-2, 2005, will feature a healthcare and family safety agenda organized by Boston-based SafetyIssues.com (www.SafetyIssues.com) and chaired by Houston surgeon Dr. Joseph Agris.
Dr. Agris claims that improved health and safety measures will dramatically reduce needless deaths and accidental personal injury in Iraq, and can raise the life expectancy of Iraqis by seven years or more. "Multiply 7 years by 25 million Iraqis," says Agris, "How much is 175 million extra person-years worth to a nation rebuilding itself?"
Agris, who has served for over 20 years as senior healthcare advisor to countries recovering from turmoil, is well-known in Iraq as the surgeon who provided new bionic arms to seven Baghdad merchants whose right hands were brutally amputated at Abu Ghraib prison at the request of Saddam Hussein. The bionic arms were so advanced that his Iraqi patients were practicing their penmanship only days after surgery.
Since that experience, Dr. Agris has been passionate about contributing to a national healing process in Iraq and has been the subject of numerous documentaries and news features widely broadcast throughout the Middle East. For the Rebuilding Iraq Conference he is calling upon safety and healthcare leaders to present sustainable solutions to benefit Iraqi families and communities.
Joining Dr. Agris is SafetyIssues.com, a Boston safety information technology and multimedia production company, coordinating major participants in the program and providing global video distribution of conference proceedings.
Health and safety issues to be addressed include:
* Creating in Iraq a culture of medicine and a culture of safety through international support
* Distribution of urgently needed medications, medical supplies and safety products
* Increasing the number of healthy babies and improving their chances of survival
* Torture rehabilitation and genocide recovery in areas victimized by the former regime
* Community health outreach programs and local media campaigns
* Continuing education and training for doctors, nurses and safety engineers
* Telemedicine solutions for remote areas and danger zones
* High-performance healthcare information systems
* Occupational safety standards
* Community and family safety, food safety, car safety, and other personal safety education
The 5th Rebuilding Iraq Conference will be the first in the conference series since its inception in 2003 to address health and safety needs in Iraq. The added sessions are designed to give greater context to the other parts of the conference program which will focus on security issues, contracting and subcontracting opportunities, funding, project management, international cooperation, and cultural training.
The 2-day event is open to all interested businesses and organizations from all countries. Those interested in making presentations related to healthcare or safety may contact John Simmons, Chief Technology Officer, SafetyIssues.com, at 703-992-6689 or by email at e-mail protected from spam bots.

10 Ways to Make Fall Fitness Colorful and Fun
Between the dog days of summer and the dark dead of winter, lies one of the best times of year to develop better health and fitness habits — autumn. A mother/daughter publishing team offers ten colorful ways you can tap into the energy of the changing seasons to begin changing your fitness lifestyle.
St. Paul, MN, (PRWEB) September 26, 2005 -- Between the dog days of summer and the dark dead of winter, lies one of the best times of year to develop better health and fitness habits — autumn. A mother/daughter publishing team offers ten colorful ways you can tap into the energy of the changing seasons to begin changing your fitness lifestyle.
“First, change your notion of January 1 as the only time of year to make fitness resolutions,” say Jennifer and Alexis Luhrs, publishers of the Streaming Colors Fitness Journal, a calendar you color in with your positive fitness actions each day. “We suggest you set small, realistic new goals at the start of every month. You can make a lot of progress in the next few months and go into the holidays strong.”
Here are some of their fall fitness and health tips:
–Brisk days allow for brisk outdoor activities that burn more calories. So ratchet up the speed of your fall color walk or bike ride. Put some gusto into your leaf raking, fall planting, or garden clean-up. Get others outside for fresh air and a workout, too. Strike up a game of touch football, or take them to one of the many charity bike rides, fun runs/walks, or volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.
–Tackle the new Food Pyramid now while fresh vegetables and fruits are still in abundance. Add colorful grilled veggies to your meals. Take the whole family out to the orchard to pick those ripe, red apples—a great start to the “apple a day” habit.
–Want to take on more challenging and scenic fall color hikes, but concerned about safety? Join a walking club and you’ll never walk alone. Check the internet to find one in your community.
–Go back to school and learn a fun new fitness skill — like swing dancing, racquetball, rock climbing, healthy gourmet cooking. Check out your community education class schedule for new activities that add color to your healthier lifestyle.
–Get ready to stay active and fit during colder weather by stocking up on colorful new comfort clothes, not fattening comfort foods. Amazing new fabrics and sports apparel technology (fleece and microfibers are just the start) keep you comfy in any weather, so there’s no excuse to hibernate.
–Don’t wait for Thanksgiving to sit down with your family and dine on healthy home-cooked food. Setting regular days and times for sit-down meals helps you get out of the habit of eating on the run. Taking time to sit down and enjoy your food is fun for the family and an important step in weight management.
–Guilt-free TV. Brighten your indoor workouts with the new fall TV line-up. Be active in your TV viewing by lifting free weights, doing your sit-ups, leg lifts, push-ups, jumping jacks, etc. When the Amazing Race gets your adrenalin pumping, jump on the treadmill or stationery bike if you have one.
–Inspired by TV’s weight loss programming, like The Biggest Loser? Don’t lose the momentum. As part of the Streaming Colors Fall Fitness Offer, while supplies last, a 2005 fitness calendar is shipped with your 2006 order from streamingcolors.com. You can get started now on coloring in your positive fitness actions each day—e.g. a splash of yellow to show you exercised, a patch of orange to show you met your daily calorie goal, a swath of purple to celebrate a junk-food-free day. Seeing too many white days in a row reminds and motivates you to stay on track. You can be a big loser yourself by the time the holidays roll around!
The Luhrs publishing team offers one more important tip. “While our calendars encourage people to add color, there is a place where white is right. For safety, be sure to wear white and reflective gear when exercising outdoors during the darker dusk and dawns of fall/winter. Have fun, but be safe.”
The Streaming Colors Fitness Journal ($15.95) is available now at www.streamingcolors.com.
Luhrs Media Company is a small, independent publishing firm located near St. Paul, Minnesota. Founded in response to the alarming rise in childhood obesity, it’s committed to developing fun, practical tools to help people avoid lifestyle-related diseases.

New Starch Spray System Boosts the Strength of Paper Products -- A Documented Case Study
Ronningen-Petter DCF self-cleaning filters play key role in new starch spray system that boosts strength of paper products. Corn Products turned to Ronningen-Petter for a DCF filter that is self-cleaning, self-contained, maintenance free, operated by PLC, and able to handle 150 gpm throughout as well as filter out any foreign material greater than 50 microns.
(PRWEB) September 23, 2005 -- United States paper mills and corrugated containers manufacturers have traditionally had access to inexpensive virgin fiber that could be mixed with hardwood or softwood to reach required strength. That has changed in recent years, with increasing dependence on recycled fiber sources, especially for linerboard and medium grades.
However, as the fibers are recycled, they get shorter and weaker which results in a lower grade product with less final sheet strength. Synthetic additives to enhance product strength have often been prohibitively expensive in a marketplace where profit margins have been ravaged by declining paper prices.
Now, a cost-effective starch spray solution has emerged in the United States that is designed to boost paper strength (up to 100% in IGT, 25% in Concora, and 20% in CFC and Mullen) while cutting fiber use by replacing much of the fiber with starch. Essentially, special spray nozzles apply an unmodified starch suspension to the fiber web of paper products to increase their internal strength and improve their surface properties. The starch stays internally on formed sheets and gelatinizes while drying.
Starch supplier Corn Products recently introduced the technology to the US after adapting it from one widely used in Europe and Latin America, where sources of virgin fiber have been scarce for decades. In its starch spraying system, process water mixes with starch to create slurry that flows into a run tank, which is sprayed onto the sheet former.
Filtering closed mill systems.
One key to making the starch spraying system work was proper filtering. This was all the more important since many paper mills now run closed systems in response to environmental regulations limiting water discharge and requiring process water re-use instead of adding fresh water.
"Getting the filtering right was critical, especially for closed systems where process water contains a lot of suspended trash," said a Corn Products representative. "Dirt, grit, metal shavings, anything on the floor of a paper mill that goes into the drain ends up in process water and needs to be filtered. Otherwise, it will plug up the spray nozzles, and could degrade paper quality, destroy sheets traveling at 4,000 ft/min, or even the paper forming wire that can cost upwards of $10,000 to replace."
Initially, Corn Products used two disposable basket-screen filters at a commercial trial location, mixing fresh water with process water in a 50:50 ratio.
"We couldn't keep the basket filters clean," said the representative. "Their surface area was too small and their throughput too low. Every 30-minutes a basket strainer plugged. We would have to tear it apart, clean it, and reassemble it. By that time, the other basket filter was plugged up. Since there was no way to sustain operation with the basket filters not performing, we stopped the trial."
A self-cleaning filter solution.
In the search for starch spraying filtration solution, the starch manufacturer turned to RPA Process Technologies (formerly Ronningen-Petter). RPA has installed thousands of industrial filtration systems worldwide in over 10,000 distinct applications.
A number of criteria for the proper filtration system were determined by collaboration between the two manufacturers. The filters would have to be self-cleaning, self-contained, maintenance-free, operated by PLC, and able to handle 150-gpm throughput as well as filter out any foreign material greater than 50-microns, which could disrupt paper formation.
Based on these criteria, Corn Products installed two Ronningen-Petter DCF-1600 filters on each starch spraying system, one for primary water filtration, and another for secondary starch slurry filtration.
With the DCF self-cleaning filter, process water enters the top inlet and passes through the screen. The screen holds any particles over 50-microns while cleaned water leaves through the bottom outlet. A cleaning disc moves up and down the filter screen, removing debris. With the aid of the downward fluid flow and the disc movement, the debris is deposited in a holding chamber at the bottom of the filter housing and regularly purged through a valve at the bottom of the chamber.
"The DCF self-cleaning filters are a night and day improvement over labor-intensive disposable filters," said the Corn Products representative. "The DCF filters have a much higher throughput, a larger surface area, and automated PLC-programmable clean and purge cycles that can be tailored to specific water configurations at each paper mill."

Ultrasonics in the Laboratory
A new product press release.
(PRWEB) September 17, 2005 -- Ultrawave create waves in Healthcare and Laboratories.
Cardiff based manufacturing company Ultrawave have just launched an all new ultrasonic cleaner, called the Hygea 1250, designed specifically for use in primary health care and laboratories. The twelve litre ultrasonic bath is the first in the market to offer full validation and locking lid as standard in compliance with HTM2030.
The unit is primarily designed to aid in the decontamination process of instruments and apparatus across a wide range of applications. Ultrasonic cleaners have the ability to clean even un-seen areas of instruments, because anywhere where water particles can form ultrasonic action will occur. This includes serrated edges and inside hinge joint on items such as surgical forceps. They are also suitable for cleaning glass items, such as test tubes and pipets, without causing damage to them.
The validation on the unit can be pre-programmed to include the name of the establishment and the names of the operators making each cycle easily traceable. Coupled with this unique function the printout will also record each stage of the cleaning process and log any failures throughout the process, should any occur. By doing this it allows the operator to guarantee the process is completed successfully without the need to be present for the duration of the cycle. The locking lid also means that the once a cycle is started it cannot be opened until the cleaning process has been completed. This ensures that the instruments have been cleaned for the required time in order to ensure complete decontamination.
The units also benefit from a new exterior design. The sleek new design is far more aesthetically pleasing than the old style stainless steel baths meaning it will now blend in well with the many modernised surgeries throughout the UK.
Ultrawave have also had a detergent specifically designed for use in these baths called SSD (single shot doing). Each sachet contains the correct dose for the Hygea unit. What differentiates the sachet is that it acts in a similar way to an everyday washing machine sachet. It is placed into the bath in its entirety and then as the water is added the polyvinylalchohol sachet dissolves and releases the detergent to form the cleaning solution. This means dosing is fast and exact each and every time the unit is refilled.

Support Hose with Personality
Hauer Corporation offers new plus size support hose.
NEW YORK, NY (PRWEB) September 16, 2005 -– Hauer today announced the addition of 'PERSONALITY' plus sized sheer support pantyhose. The new style is designed to fit women weighing up to 500 pounds, and come in sheer with a firming control top; in 12/15 mmHg compression and is available for immediate shipment. A firmer compression of 18/21 mmHg is still in the testing phase and will be available soon.
Plus-size consumers represent a significant share of the women’s apparel market. NPD Shoppers Panel data found that the plus-size woman (classified as size 14 or larger) accounted for 27% of the apparel market in 2001, following growth of 11% between 1999 and 2000.
Plus-size women are no longer willing to settle for unflattering lingerie and hosiery. Additionally, market research shows more than half of American women wear plus-size hosiery.
Supermarket hosiery marketers took note. Kayser-Roth introduced No Nonsense Woman, designed to compete with Just My Size, which was previously the only hosiery line catering to this consumer.
"The fact that you can have a graduated compression pantyhose in these size ranges is unprecedented in the support hose market," says Max Hauer, President and co-founder of Hauer. "Until now, plus sized women were not able to really enjoy the proven benefits of graduated compression hose because the existing products in the market didn’t fit well or got worn out pretty quickly," he says.
"PERSONALITY is the ideal combination of function and fashion," Hauer says. "It features both graduated compression and a body shaping panty that perfectly adapts to the sturdy body type," he says.
Personality is a perfect complement to Solidea® which was introduced in 2003. The support hosiery line not only provides women with clinically tested graduated compression hosiery it also comes in trendy styles and colors. "From Miss Relax knee highs to Marilyn thigh highs to Naomi, Wonder Model and Venre pantyhose, customers will always find a brand to suit their lifestyle," says Chany Landau, VP Marketing, Hauer.
"I was very impressed with the sample of the new Personality line," says Linda Mullinix, Administrative Manager for the Huntsville branch of Buckey Home Medical. "It's sheer enough and offers graduated compression and will make it possible to fit a market that we have previously been unable to accommodate," she says.

Swisslog Refrigerates Automated Pharmacy Medication Store & Pick Cabinet
Swisslog develops a refrigerated medication storage and retrieval cabinet for hospital pharmacies.
Denver, CO (PRWEB) September 16, 2005 -- Swisslog, a leader in hospital pharmacy automation systems, has developed an automated refrigerated pharmacy medication storage and retrieval cabinet. The refrigeration capability will be added to Swisslog’s existing BoxPicker system, a high density, automated pharmacy cabinet for storing and dispensing medication inventory and supplies.
The major benefit of the refrigerated BoxPicker is that hospital pharmacies can combine multiple refrigerators into an automated storage and retrieval cabinet. These are items that hospitals traditionally have not been able to store and retrieve in an automated system like BoxPicker or a vertical carousel.
The refrigerated BoxPicker will maintain specified temperatures between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit. A heat exchanger will be mounted remotely to reduce noise and heat emissions. This system will not cause a loss in storage capacity or increase height compared with the existing non-refrigerated BoxPicker.
BoxPicker is an automated system that stores and dispenses items in individual storage bins. The operator fills a bin with medications and BoxPicker automatically stores it on racking inside a secure enclosure. All transactions start and finish through a controlled-access drawer. Information about the contents of a bin is entered at a workstation.
The BoxPicker interfaces to the hospital and or pharmacy IT system for seamless transfer of medication and patient order data.
BoxPicker offers high-density, compact storage of up to nearly 700 bins in less than 75 square-feet of floor space. Picking rate performance over vertical carousels is more than three bins to one, greatly enhancing hourly throughput and production (200 bins per hour). BoxPicker provides secure user access, a totally enclosed structure for safety, and high transaction speeds.
You can learn more about the BoxPicker pharmacy medication storage and retrieval system by visiting Swisslog online at http://www.swisslog.com/hcs-index/hcs-systems/hcs-pharmacy.htm.

Volcano Vaporizer Is Still Top of the Line
Forced-air vaporizers continue to prove effectiveness over direct heat.
(PRWEB) September 16, 2005 -- Users continue to rave about the innovative smokeless experience and reliable operation of the Volcano Vaporizer smoking-cessation/aromatherapy device, while forced-air vaporizers in general are proving their effectiveness in a crowded market of inexpensive, direct-heat devices.
The Volcano has received numerous accolades from industry professionals, such as the Dr. Rudolph Eberle Prize for innovation in Germany, and Best Vaporizer 2003 here in the U.S. Other companies have tried – with limited success – to copy the Volcano’s unique experience, which literally allows the user to "smoke without smoking™". The patented device accomplishes this by allowing inhalation of only less-harmful vapors, rather than smoke, while maintaining all the flavor of the tobacco or other combustible material.
The major difference between less-expensive vaporizers and the Volcano is the way heat is transferred – a key element in successful vaporization. Many manufacturers of inexpensive vaporizers such as BC, Aromed, Vapor Doc, Vapor Cannon and other box-style vaporizers are less effective because they rely on a heat plate or may even directly combust the plant material, bringing it to the point of burning rather than simply removing the useful vapors and leaving behind the plant residue.
High-quality vaporizers like the Volcano are considered top of the line because they utilize a forced-air chamber, bringing the plant material to a high temperature without burning it.
"The best vaporizers on the market use forced air," notes Steve Steinberg, who sells the Volcano wholesale to area shops. "Vapir, Vaporzilla, and the Volcano are good examples of forced air devices. Of these, the Volcano is the highest quality vaporizer, with the best results on test subjects and the easiest to use among many choices out there.
"Some use a heat gun, but this is not advisable because it can impart chemicals from plastics, rubbers, and metals used in the gun," he added. "Heat guns are not made as inhalation devices. They are for industrial use, not medical use. The Volcano is 100-percent medical grade, and this is very important since vaporizers are made to create breathable vapor which is clean and imparts no residue."
Steinberg noted that some vaporizers use an aluminum heating element, while others may utilize a ceramic element. While ceramic is cleaner, it does not create an even temperature control so the results may be unpredictable. He recommends vaporizers that rely on aluminum elements for heat, such as the Volcano.
"Makers of ceramic elements argue they are cleaner burning, while manufacturers who use aluminum elements argue that temperature control is more efficient with an aluminum block," he said. "The element does not attain a high enough temperature to oxidize the aluminum, so the block presents no more health threat than an aluminum can. Plus, the aluminum heats more evenly and quickly. The best vaporizer – the Volcano – uses an aluminum block. The manufacturer is looking into ceramic elements that can work, but one reason the Volcano maintains such perfect temperature control is because it uses an aluminum element and block, and aluminum has different properties than potential practical designs using ceramics. An aluminum element and block can more rapidly adjust for effects of air pressure and flow over plant material."
"The best Vaporizers are more advanced than ever before, but they still have a ways to go considering they use plastics, aluminum and other materials that can potentially produce toxins," he added. "The key to vaporization is maintaining control over temperature and flow, which ultimately leads to more perfect control over vapor density."
The Volcano is the leading edge vaporizer on the market. Serious wholesale inquiries should be directed to www.vaporizeit.com, or by calling Steve at (510) 414-8429.
The Volcano is manufactured in Tuttlingen, a town in Southern Germany regarded internationally as the center of medical technology development and manufacturing, and sold in the United States through an agreement with Slide4less.com and its subsidiaries. More information on the Volcano can be obtained at www.vaporizeit.com or www.storz-bickel.com.

VMS Rehab Offers Innovative Patient Chair Reducing Risk of Serious Injuries For Health Care Workers
This news release is about the need to address the increasing number of serious injuries to health care workers on the job due to lifting or moving patients. It is proposed that the introduction of "Safe Patient Handling -No Manual Lift" legislation coupled with the installation of more 'patient' assistive devices in healthcare facilities will reduce the risk of health care worker injuries.
(PRWEB) September 16, 2005 -- In the face of increasing numbers of serious injuries to health care workers on the job and the negative impact this has had on the Healthcare industry throughout North America, VMS Rehab Systems, Inc, a provider of adaptive seating systems for the elderly and persons with disabilities, claims that the need to install assistive devices for patient Sit to Stand Transfers or for moving and lifting patients in hospitals, long term care facilities and at home, is greater today than ever before.
According to *Dr.Richard F.Edlich, M.D., Phd, "Achieving a standing position without the assistance of a healthcare worker has two important benefits. First, it allows persons with disabilities as well as the elderly the functional independence. Secondly, it prevents the potential injury to the healthcare worker, while providing assistance to the seated individual. Without the use of VMS' ALDA hi-seat chair or other such assistive devices, healthcare workers are developing disabling back injuries…."
In a 2005 published report in the Journal of Long-Term Effects of Medical Implants, titled "Devastating Injuries in Healthcare Workers:Description of the Crisis and the Legislative Solution to the Epidemic of Back Injury from Patient Lifting," Dr. Edlich points out that 'Healthcare workers consistently rank among the top occupations with disabling back injuries from manually lifting patients.'
Explains Michael Wexler, VMS Rehab President, "If you think that entering and exiting a standard height chair is 'no sweat' for the Elderly or Disabled Person, you are wrong. For some Elderly, or patients undergoing hip or knee surgery, or for persons with severe Arthritis of the hips or knees, a Sit to Stand Transfer cannot be executed without assistance from nursing staff or a caregiver. That's where the trouble begins for healthcare workers who have to lift literally tons of human mass during a routine shift." Adds Wexler, "Talk to any healthcare worker and they will tell you horror stories about the amount of lifting they do during a routine shift. They will also tell you about the serious injuries which they or a colleague have incurred on the job."
According to the Edlich Report, "Nursing work is comparable to the hardest labor, with nurses lifting an estimated 1.8 tons per shift." And there appears to be evidence that other healthcare workers could be lifting 'over 5 tons' per shift.
Writes Dr. Edlich, "Everyday nurses suffer debilitating and often career-ending and life-altering injuries from lifting and moving patients. The Healthcare Industry has relied on people to do the work of machines….Body mechanics training is ineffective in the prevention of back injury with patient lifting…….A "Safe Patient Handling-No Manual Lift" policy is essential to halt hazardous manual patient lifting, which promotes needless disability and loss of healthcare workers, pain and risk of severe injury to patients, and tremendous waste of financial resources to employers and workers' compensation insurance carriers."
Innovative assistive devices that promote independent activity for the Elderly and/or for persons with disabilities answer the call from Healthcare workers to reduce the amount of lifting or moving of patients.
The Alda Artherapedic Seating System II™ is a proprietary hi-seat chair that was originally designed and developed in co-operation with the Rehabilitation Department of the Women's and Brigham Hospital, Boston, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. It is one of the first adaptive seating systems without a mechanical lift to assist in the chair-rise of individuals with musculoskeletal or neuromuscular impairment.
With a seat height of 57.5-62.5 cm (23-25 in), the Alda hi-seater not only reduces muscle and joint stress for patients following hip and/or knee joint replacement or repair, or for persons with severe Arthritis of the Hip or Knees, but at the same time, it reduces the risk of back injuries for healthcare workers caused by lifting or moving patients when entering or exiting a seated position.
The Alda Artherapedic Seating System II™ is available as a standard seater (50.8cm/20' wide/weight bearing up to 160kg/355 lbs) or wide seater(60.98cm/24' wide/weight bearing up to 230kg/550 lbs). It can also be purchased as a standard or wide seat transporter for transition purposes in hospitals, rehab clinics, and long term care facilities. Established in 1997, VMS Rehab Systems operates from offices in Ottawa, Ontario and Ogdensburg, New York.

LifeSensor, a Personal Health Record, Receives ips Certification Again
SAN MATEO, Calif. (PRWEB) September 16, 2005 -- LifeSensor®, a web-based personal health record, has once again met the ips internet privacy standards for data protection and has received certification. The auditors of the German data protection agency, datenschutz nord GmbH, confirm the exemplary handling of personal information by InterComponentWare (ICW) and the LifeSensor concept of a personal health record, assuring consumer trust and confidence. LifeSensor members manage and control their health information in one convenient location and can authorize access to physicians, pharmacists and fitness trainers for a quick and brief overview.
In order to grant the ips certificate, datenschutz nord not only audited the electronic personal health record, but also the WebAPI interface linking to the various medical primary systems. Data protection auditor Oliver Stutz stated, “All medical data within the LifeSensor personal health record is stored separately from the patient’s personal data and is encrypted with every file transfer. Not even ICW employees are able to associate any medical data with a particular individual without the patient’s explicit authorization. ICW stands out as an exemplary leader in this industry in regards to data protection policies.” Due to increased security standards, the LifeSensor certification process in 2005 exceeded the certification standards established two years earlier.

E-Control Systems to Present a New Manual and Automated HACCP Control Solution for Foodservice Divisions in Schools and Hospitals at the NAFEM Show in Anaheim, CA 23-25 of September 2005
A new program offered by E-Control Systems allows School Districts to immediately Automate their HACCP procedures in all of their Schools at no charge.
Chatsworth, CA (PRWEB) September 15, 2005 -- E-Control Systems, Inc., a trusted leader of hardware and software products for the foodservice industry's Online Kitchen and HACCP control, and the leader in Automated HACCP systems, with hundreds of installations nationwide, has come up with a program that allows school districts to immediately automate the most important part of HACCP, temperature monitoring of equipment and food.
E-Control Systems will be showing these new solutions at the NAFEM Show in Anaheim, CA 23-25 of September 2005 (Booth #2908 in the Technology Pavilion).
The USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) issued guidelines on implementing a food safety system in schools. The guidelines will assist school food authorities (SFAs) in meeting the requirement in section 111 of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 (Public Law 108-265).
To comply with the law, SFAs have to implement HACCP principles before the end of School Year 2005-2006
E-Control Systems is introducing a manual version of its industry leading control software that will allow all schools in a school district to collect and monitor equipment and food temperatures right away, with the option to move gradually into a fully automated HACCP control system.
Under this new promotion provided by E-Control Systems, any school district that will introduce E-Control Systems’ automated HACCP System, using Raptor Web Software™ (RWS™) into at least one of its schools will get free of charge for school year 2005/2006, a license to use the manual monitoring module for HACCP data collection for all of their other schools. This allows the school district’s foodservice department to use the same tools to manage and monitor the critical control points (CCPs) needed for Food Safety (HACCP) from the very beginning.
E-Control Systems also provides the option to use the manual version without any commitment to purchase our products in the future. For School Districts wishing to go along this program, E-Control Systems will provide the software for an evaluation period of 45 days at no charge. No charge will be requested during this evaluation period. If the School District decides to use the software in its schools for the rest of the school year, E-Control Systems and the school district will estimate the needed support for the use of the software at the specific School District and get the School District’s commitment for this support.
Other products developed and presented by E-Control Systems at the NAFEM Show include:
• E-Control Systems “Worksite” that includes: Preventive Maintenance and Scheduling, Work Order Generation and Management, Project management and Scheduling, Information Sharing, Energy management and Energy Conservation.
• Meshed Network and Wifi Wireless Sensors Integrated into Raptor Web Software™ (RWS™)
• Networked Event Driven Camera and DVR integrated into Raptor Web Software™ (RWS™)
• Networked Power Meters Integrated into Raptor Web Software™ (RWS™)
• Handheld devices(PDA) for data logging of HACCP Control Points and automated inventory management integrated into Raptor Web Software™ (RWS™)

Physician Worries About the Possible Long-Term Health Impact for Katrina’s Survivors, Workers
Isaac Eliaz, MD is speaking out on the possible long-term health impact of Katrina for some folks. He is worried about survivors and workers wading through the sewage and absorbing toxic chemicals and metals, especially lead. He is donating heavy metal test kits to help people identify their individual exposure.
Santa Rosa, CA (PRWEB) September 15, 2005 -- "There are truly no by-standers in this national tragedy," said Isaac Eliaz, MD. "Each of us has a personal responsibility to lend a hand in our own way – this is the only way that our country will heal from this trauma on a personal and collective basis." Dr. Eliaz whose clinical practice is in the SF Bay Area is sharing his medical expertise and concern about the health impact for the people who have been exposed to the toxic muck in New Orleans – sewage, e-coli, various viruses, heavy metals, lead concentrations and poisons that have been part of the aftermath of Katrina. "There are serious short and long term health implications that will be experienced if attention is not paid to this issue," he added. "Pregnant women should be especially concerned because a fetus cannot handle the toxicity as well as an adult."
While, food, water and housing needs are paramount, Dr. Eliaz believes that getting rid of the toxins must happen to eliminate the very real threat to the victims and rescue workers in the area. He stresses that it’s going to become essential. "These toxins (especially lead) can cause both long-term and immediate health problems. They directly enter the blood stream and soft tissue of the body, the build-up of which could cause a breakdown of the immune system leaving the body vulnerable to infection as well as illness for years to come," he added.
These potential health problems have inspired Dr. Eliaz to help by educating the public and personally donating test kits to people who have been affected. "The public health crisis in the aftermath of Katrina is going to increase if people do not find a way to detoxify," he said. "After people hydrate, feed their families and themselves and establish a roof over their heads, this should be one of their next priorities, so that they are able to emerge from this catastrophe in reasonable good health. This is my personal advice and my offering of support." Dr Eliaz has reached out to FEMA to give out the kits and cleansing products.

Clinical Validation of A Simple, Manual-Digital Home Blood Pressure Monitor
The LifeSource UA-704 Mini Manual Inflate blood pressure monitor receives clinical validation for accuracy.
Mississauga, Ontario (PRWEB) September 8, 2005 -- Auto Control Medical Inc., a distributor of home health monitoring devices, today announced the publication of the clinical validation study of the LifeSource UA-704 Mini Manual Inflate blood pressure monitor. The study was just published in the professional journal Blood Pressure Monitoring and received a top A/A rating using the British Hypertension Society protocol. The study was conducted by Russian clinicians under the direction of Dr. Zhanna D. Kobalava of the Russian Peoples’ University.
The LifeSource UA-704 Mini Manual Inflate is an innovative monitor that incorporates digital blood pressure technology and advanced features with an economical manual pump instead of the more expensive electric pump used in most modern home blood pressure monitors. The result is a retail cost almost half of higher end models. Included with this new monitor is an Irregular Heartbeat feature which allows those who have an irregular heartbeat a reliable method of taking their blood pressure at home. For added convenience, the UA-704 monitor is designed to fit in the palm of the hand. This energy efficient monitor can perform approximately 2,000 measurements with just one ‘AA’ battery (included). Medium and large cuff versions are available.
This successful accuracy study of this new monitor means that it is the only validated manual-digital monitor available to Canadians. The list of validated LifeSource models is now: UA-767, UA-779, UA-787AC, UA-774, UA-767PAC and UA-704.

Hot Pepper Nasal Spray is Touted as Powerful Natural Weight Loss Aid
The current issue of the hugely popular women's publication, "First Magazine" features an article about a woman who lost weight after she used a popular hot pepper nasal spray to relieve her chronic sinus condition. Billed as the world's first and only hot pepper nasal spray, "Sinus Buster" has built a miraculous reputation as perhaps the most effective treatment for chronic headaches and sinus conditions.
Albany, NY (PRWEB) September 14, 2005 -- The current issue of "First Magazine," a hugely popular women's publication, features an article about a woman who lost weight after she used a popular hot pepper nasal spray to relieve her chronic sinus condition. Billed as the world's first and only hot pepper nasal spray, "Sinus Buster" has built a miraculous reputation as perhaps the most effective treatment for chronic headaches and sinus conditions.
Now it turns out that Sinus Buster also has one very unique and healthful side effect that may be the answer for weight conscious overeaters. This all natural nasal spray contains "Capsaicin," the active ingredient in hot peppers which is clinically proven to safely suppress the appetite.
Sinus Buster was commercially launched in early 2004 by Wayne Perry, a former self defense instructor and chronic headache sufferer who accidentally discovered the headache stopping powers of hot peppers shortly after appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show. During his appearance, Perry demonstrated the effectiveness of self defense pepper spray, and soon after found himself performing live pepper spray demonstrations around the country. Then just before an appearance on a local news program, Perry was struck by one of his headaches. Although he was suffering in dire pain, Perry went through with the demonstration. Within seconds after the reporter sprayed him (on camera) with real police pepper spray, Perry realized his headache was instantly relieved.
This experience led Wayne into several years of experimentation using natural hot pepper extracts in various nasal spray solutions. By 2003, Perry had perfected his new hot pepper nasal spray producing a powerful and completely natural treatment for chronic headaches and sinus conditions.
By the summer of 2005, Sinus Buster had already been embraced by hundreds of doctors and thousands of patients throughout North America. This all natural nasal spray has fast become one of the most respected health products ever conceived, and was even named "Most Innovative Nutraceutical Of 2005" by The Immunity Institute of Finland.
Until recently, Sinus Buster was known only as a sinus and headache remedy, but now many users are also crediting this unique nasal spray with natural weight loss. The Capsaicin in Sinus Buster actually reduces hunger cravings with just a couple squirts, and this is more than a theory. In fact, many clinical studies have shown Capsaicin to be extremely effective for reducing overactive appetites.
"It's a proven fact that hot peppers reduce hunger cravings when added to a normal meal, but when the essence of hot peppers is ingested through the nose, the effects are instant and powerful to say the least. We never intended to market Sinus Buster as an appetite suppressant. I mean it's the greatest headache stopper in the world and it'll knock out most sinus infections in days. We even have two other pepper products designed exclusively for weight loss, but every day we hear from Sinus Buster users praising us for their newfound weight loss," says Wayne Perry, president of SiCap industries, the manufacturers of Sinus Buster.
You can read about the weight loss properties of Sinus Buster in the current issue of First Magazine, available at most newsstands and checkout counters throughout North America. To find out more about Sinus Buster and the whole line of pepper products from SiCap Industries, visit the company website at (www.sinusbuster.com).

Baxa Introduces New Oral and Enteral Liquid Dispensers with Purple Plungers to Increase Patient Safety
Specialized Baxa oral dispensers now have a purple plunger for immediate visual differentiation from IV syringes to prevent wrong-route administration errors. Oral dispensers are syringe-like devices with a unique tip configuration that cannot accommodate a hypodermic needle or actuate a needleless IV access port.
Ascot, UK (PRWEB) September 13, 2005 -- Baxa Ltd introduces a complete range of new sterile Exacta-Med® Dispensers for oral and enteral medication delivery featuring clear barrels, non-luer tips and distinctive purple plungers. The new products were developed in response to concerns over wrong-route administration of medications and feed, and provide immediate and distinct visual differentiation from standard injection syringes.
Oral dispensers are syringe-like devices with a unique tip configuration that cannot accommodate a hypodermic needle or actuate a needleless IV access port. Baxa Exacta-Med Dispensers were the first devices specifically designed to provide safe and accurate delivery of oral liquids. The new dispensers’ purple plunger provides additional differentiation, makes training easier and further reduces the possibility of wrong-route administration through a patient’s IV or epidural lines.
The UK National Health Service and the US Institute for Safe Medication Practice, among other recognised authorities, recommend the use of oral dispensers for all oral liquid doses. David Cousins, Head of Safe Medication Practice at the National Patient Safety Agency (UK) acknowledges, “The NPSA welcomes any design initiatives that help users to differentiate different types of syringes, minimise the risks of wrong route errors and improve patient safety.”
Latex-free Baxa oral dispensers fit the needs of pharmacy, nursing and outpatient caregivers for safe medication administration. Specially designed tip
caps seal oral unit doses in the oral dispensers until administration.
The new Exacta-Med Dispensers are supplied sterile and individually wrapped and available in 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 mL sizes. Dispenser barrels feature graduations as low as 0.01 mL on the smallest size. These coloured-plunger dispensers are available in the European market only.
Baxa Corporation introduced the Exacta-Med Oral Dispenser in 1975. Oral dispensers are more accurate for drug delivery than teaspoons or graduated cups and safer than using injection syringes for oral medication delivery. The wide-tip design of the Exacta-Med Dispenser was developed in cooperation with representatives and customers from leading children’s hospitals. The first to recognise the need for a dedicated oral dispenser, Baxa is still the market leader today.

Brunswick Automotive Professionals Mobility Division Announces 2nd Annual Customer Appreciation and Open House Event
Brunswick Automotive Professionals, Mobility Division (BAMP) will hold their 2nd Annual Mobility Customer Appreciation Day and Open House on Friday, September 16, and Saturday, September 17 from 10 AM to 5 PM, rain or shine, at 1490 Route 1 North in North Brunswick, NJ.
North Brunswick, NJ (PRWEB) September 10, 2005 -- Brunswick Automotive Professionals, Mobility Division (BAMP) announces 2nd Annual Mobility Customer Appreciation Day and Open House. The two day event will take place on Friday, September 16, and Saturday, Saturday, September 17 from 10 AM to 5 PM, rain or shine, at 1490 Route 1 North in North Brunswick, NJ.
“Our mobility business was started almost 25 years ago in an effort to assist our physically challenged automotive customers,” said Robert Schickler co-owner of BAMP with his brother Leonard. “Through the years, the handicap vehicle business has changed quite dramatically…not only with the convergence of dealerships…but with the breadth of products available to customers. Today, businesses are more apt to rush a customer through the buying process in order to close the sale and move on to the next customer. It’s a production line approach to selling. However, we continue to take a traditional and family oriented approach to our business by taking the time to acknowledge and value each and every person that comes through our door. Whether it’s a customer or someone just looking for information, we welcome everyone. From the beginning, customer appreciation has always been and will always be our top priority.”
Leonard Schickler added, “Holding an annual Customer Appreciation Day and Open House is just one of the ways we thank our customers and associates for doing business with us. However, our Open House is not just for our customers and business associates. Everyone is welcome to stop by, enjoy some refreshments and get acquainted with our staff and facility. So whether you’re looking for information about mobility equipment or just beginning the accessible or adapted vehicle research process, we look forward to meeting you. Our mobility specialists will be on hand to answer any questions and provide information. We will also have a complete inventory of new and used wheelchair accessible vehicles to see or take for a test drive.”
To assist folks looking for information on creating handicap accessible surroundings in their home as well as in commercial facilities and public buildings, John and Patrick Sherwood of Accessibility Design Associates (ADA) will also be available to answer questions. “As a young man, my father John was paralyzed in an automobile accident,” said Patrick Sherwood, President of ADA. “This tragedy led us down a path we may not have otherwise followed. In personally making things easier and more accessible for my father, I learned what incredible difference independence makes with one’s quality of life. ADA recently built my father's accessible home, complete with elevator, ramp, and accessible bathroom. Being that my father is not only the founder but also an employee of ADA, having that accessibility has given him the freedom to come to work every day.”
There will be a random drawing for a free Mobility Service valued at $129.95 given to ten (10) lucky entrants and one (1) grand prize random drawing for a free TV courtesy of The Braun Corporation. No purchase necessary. For mail entries, please write your name, address and phone number and contest (Mobility Service, TV) you would like to be entered in. Send to Brunswick Automotive Professionals, Attn: Mobility Division, 1490 Route 1 North, North Brunswick, NJ 08902. Entries must be received no later than Monday, September 19. Drawing will be held on Friday, September 30, 2005. Winners will be contacted by phone and listed via the Brunswick Mobility web site located at www.BrunswickMobility.com

Fertility Monitor Detects Ovulation Cycle with New Mess-Free Method
OvaTel®, a new non-invasive fertility monitor cleared by the FDA, can detect a woman’s ovulation period with saliva rather than urine. This fertility monitoring method is mess-free and 98% accurate, and can be used with natural family planning methods.
(PRWEB) September 8, 2005 -- A new fertility monitor has been developed that can monitor ovulation cycles without messy urine testing. OvaTel® is a saliva-based fertility monitor, which is able to detect the higher salt levels in a woman's saliva during her ovulation period.
The OvaTel Fertility Monitor is a small, portable, and very durable microscope that can be reused for a lifetime to detect ovulation cycles. To use the fertility monitor, a woman must simply clean the microscope's slide with a soft cloth, apply a tiny bit of saliva to the slide—this is usually done by touching a fingertip to her tongue, then to the slide—letting the slide air-dry for approximately five minutes, then looking through the microscope to read the results. The OvaTel Fertility Monitor comes with an easy-to-read instructional booklet to help women successfully monitor their ovulation cycles.
In addition to being portable, reusable, and eliminating the mess involved with expensive single-use urine tests, the OvaTel Fertility Monitor also:
* Can be used in conjunction with natural family planning, which is endorsed by major religions including the Roman Catholic Church
* Is discreet and convenient
* Doesn't require a battery
* Is non-invasive and all-natural
* Provides results in five minutes
Research has shown that saliva-based fertility monitoring is 98% accurate. To see the results of these studies, to learn more about saliva-based fertility monitoring, or to order the OvaTel® Fertility Monitor, visit www.ovatel.com. OvaTel is currently offering free shipping on all orders within the United States.

ASCOT, Berkshire (PRWEB) September 8, 2005 -- Baxa Ltd announces that their pharmacy peristaltic filling pump – the Repeater Pump (099E) – tested successfully through 26 gas sterilisation cycles at one cycle per day with hydrogen peroxide vapour. Bioquell (UK) Ltd, manufacturers of the Clarus® hydrogen peroxide gas generator system, performed the tests for Baxa at their Andover laboratory.
The Repeater Pump exhibited no adverse effects on performance or accuracy of operations during the third-party testing. Therefore, the Repeater Pump is suitable for use in environments such as isolators or cleanrooms that are subject to repeated gassing with hydrogen peroxide vapour.
Hydrogen peroxide vapour provides an effective and reproducible sporicidal sterilising method for dealing with a wide range of bacteria, viruses and fungi. Typical gassing frequency in hospital aseptic units is once a week, but this may vary according to application.
The Repeater Pump was the first designed to meet needs specific to the hospital pharmacy. A highly accurate pump, it is strong enough to deliver viscous fluids, yet precise enough to deliver very low volumes. The Baxa Repeater Pump is the world’s leading pharmacy pump, with more than 3,000 in use in US hospitals and approximately 300 installations across Europe.

Cottage Health System to Implement Galvanon's MediKiosk to Ensure a Faster and More Accurate Patient Registration Process
Automated patient identification system will feature fingerprint recognition from NEC Solutions America to prevent medical errors resulting from patient misidentification.
Maitland, FL (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) September 7, 2005 -- Galvanon, the patient experience company, today announced that Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Cottage Health System will implement its MediKiosk solution to automate the patient registration process at its facilities. Cottage Health System will use the patient self-service kiosks, which will be equipped with biometric fingerprint imaging capabilities provided by NEC Solutions (America) Inc., to instantly and accurately identify patients during the check-in process.
“Ensuring accurate patient identification minimizes the potential for errors and creates a safer healthcare system,” said Alberto Kywi, chief information officer at Cottage Health System. “This innovative technology delivers a reliable and efficient method for streamlining the patient check-in process and enables our organization to continue providing the highest possible standard of care.”
Upon arrival at the facility, patients will have the option of providing a thumbprint or swiping a driver's license, credit card or membership card directly on the kiosk to begin checking-in. Patients can then use the kiosks to update demographic and insurance information, sign consent forms and make co-payments. Once checked in, front office staff is notified of the patient's arrival.
“With traditional paper-based registration processes, properly identifying patients is a significant challenge,” said Greg Sarrail, director of sales and marketing at NEC Solutions America/Healthcare Solutions Division. “When fingerprint recognition is used in combination with automated applications like Galvanon's MediKiosk, healthcare organizations have the ability to eliminate duplicate patient records, reduce medical errors and enhance patient safety.”
Galvanon's MediKiosk is part of a comprehensive suite of products that allows hospitals and clinics to provide patient self-service capabilities such as pre-registration via the Web, online BillPay and eClipboards™, Galvanon's wireless patient check-in solution.
“As the amount of paperwork completed during the patient check-in process continues to increase, healthcare organizations need a better, more efficient way to register patients,” said Raj Toleti, chairman and chief executive officer of Galvanon. “By teaming with NEC, a leading biometrics technology provider, we were able to dramatically improve how Cottage admits patients, resulting in a safer, more effective registration process.”

Katrina Victims Benefit from First Use of Mobile Emergency Response Center
Avail™ Medical Sees Immediate Benefit of Emergency Response Program
Santa Barbara, CA (PRWEB) September 7, 2005 -- Avail™ Medical, a global provider of patented transportable field hospitals, today announced the first use of a mobile field hospital in an emergency or disaster capacity. “When we launched our Emergency Response Program just last week, we never dreamed that America would fall victim to one of the worst natural disasters in a century," said Jeffrey Merino, CEO of Avail Medical. “We are thrilled to see our technology provide a state-of-the-art workplace for the dedicated healthcare professionals assisting hurricane Katrina victims in Mississippi,” Merino said.
The Avail Emergency Response Center (ERC) incorporates all of the benefits of a high tech hospital with the added benefit of being transportable to an emergency or disaster site. The Avail Emergency Response Center is a 1,000 square foot state-of-the-art medical facility housed in an expandable 53-foot long tractor trailer. Because the compressed size and fully-loaded weight meet Federal Department of Transportation requirements, the ERC can be transported over U.S. roadways directly to the disaster site or closest medical facility without special permits or be airlifted via a C-17 or C-5 military aircraft. Inside the Emergency Response Center, trauma patients can be triaged, diagnosed, treated, and even receive surgery inside an operating room that would be the envy of many in major medical centers. In cases of extreme emergency, up to three surgeries can be performed simultaneously in the positively pressurized, 99% HEPA filtration environment. The Avail ERC meets the stringent equipment requirements of a designated Trauma Center as defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). These ACS definitions have been adopted by most states as their own requirements for the designation of trauma center capability.
“To date, the field hospital has been successfully utilized to provide healthcare and surgery services at hospitals, inside prisons, and in remote locations,” said Anita Chambers, Chief Strategic Officer of Avail Medical. “Because we felt that our product would offer significant benefits to emergency service providers, we felt compelled to launch a cost-effective program to help meet Homeland Security trauma surge requirements. Hurricane Katrina has confirmed the need for such a program,” Chambers said.
“In the case of a disaster of the proportion of hurricane Katrina, many local healthcare facilities are either damaged or overwhelmed by the volume of services required by the victims of the disaster,” said Malinda Mitchell, consultant and recently retired CEO of Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA. “While staff and physicians are readily responding from other areas, they need an adequate facility in which to perform their much needed trauma and surgical services. The Avail Emergency Response Center provides the mobile facility for those services to be delivered,” Mitchell said.
About Avail™ Medical
Avail Medical is a California corporation formed in 2004 and holds the only issued U.S. patents for a mobile field hospital with an operating room. The company specializes in the design, development, manufacture, and distribution of rapid deployment field hospitals that include state-of-the-art operating room facilities. The product can be utilized by hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers experiencing over capacity (census) issues or undergoing operating room retrofits; humanitarian and military organizations providing medical care in remote areas of the world; and emergency medical and disaster preparedness organizations. To date, virtually every type of surgery with the exception of open heart and complex neurosurgery has been performed in the patented Field Hospital. It meets DOT requirements for standard transportation over US roads; it can also be transported via military aircraft such as the C-5A or C-17. Existing Field Hospitals built under this design have successfully been used at hospitals, correctional institutions, governmental facilities, ambulatory surgery centers, and in field situations.

Webcast summary:
The protein expression of prostate and ovarian tumor cells are studied to search for potential markers of cancer. Fresh frozen tumor cells are obtained and prepared for study by the pathology groups at the University of Michigan Medical Center. The tumors are lysed and separated using a 2-D liquid separation, which is capable of separating out nearly 3000 protein bands. This method involves separation based upon pI in the first dimension using chromatofocusing and by hydrophobicity in the second dimension using nonporous silica (NPS) RP-HPLC.
The liquid eluent from the second dimension is then split and 1/3 is directed to an electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ESI-TOF MS) for mass analysis, while the remaining 2/3 is collected by a fraction collector for MALDI-TOF MS analysis. The result is a mass map as a function of pI analogous to 2-D gel electrophoresis. The ESI-TOF MS provides an accurate MW value, which can be used with MALDI-TOF MS peptide mapping and MS/MS for accurate identification of proteins in these human cancer cells. In addition, the MW value provides a means to determine whether a protein is modified including the presence of truncations, deletions, sequence changes and splice variants.
Using this method large numbers of tumor samples can be mapped and each type of cancer can be classified according to its protein profile. In addition, marker proteins have been identified which can be associated with different grades and stages of cancer progression. The method provides a means for pathologists to identify the grade of the tumor, i.e. whether it is more benign or malignant, and consequently determine a specific treatment for that tumor.

AlsoSalt, the First Palatable Salt Substitute
A true scientific breakthrough, AlsoSalt offers the taste of salt without the adverse health risks of sodium. It is completely sodium free without the bitter aftertaste other salt substitutes have. You can cook and bake with AlsoSalt or sprinkle it over food. Plus, it has the added dietary benefit of two nutrients, potassium and L-lysine, which are essential to good health.
(PRWEB) September 6, 2005 -- Scientists have searched for years for a palatable alternative to salt. While the food industry has found acceptable substitutes for sugar, fat, and other ingredients, it has been unsuccessful in finding one for salt despite two decades of effort. Until now, the only known substitute for salt has been potassium chloride. While it has a salty flavor, it leaves a bitter aftertaste that is best described as awful. “We have found a way to keep the salty flavor of the potassium chloride while masking the metallic taste,” states Joan Warren of AlsoSalt “and we do it naturally.” AlsoSalt holds patents worldwide. www.alsosalt.com
Doctors and dietitians across the United States are distributing sample packets of AlsoSalt to their patients on a low sodium diet. AlsoSalt not only helps people reduce sodium in their diet while enjoying the taste of salt, it provides nutrients that are essential to good health. Its two main ingredients are potassium chloride and L-lysine. Sample packets of AlsoSalt are available to the medical community by contacting us via email or toll-free 800-381-SALT.

Concerned with the apparent link between high sodium intake and high blood pressure and other health conditions, physicians often prescribe a low or no sodium diet. Too much sodium causes the body to retain water, which can hype the pressure in the arteries. High blood pressure is the leading cause of strokes and a major factor in heart disease. Rebalancing sodium intake with potassium can help offset this dangerous effect by dampening the impact of sodium and lowering blood pressure.
AlsoSalt is available in 3 flavors; original, butter flavored, and garlic flavored. It is sold in 2.5 oz bottles in the spice section in many grocery stores across the country or at www.alsosalt.com
Visit www.alsosalt.com for additional information including low sodium diet tips, low sodium food choices, the sodium and potassium content of many foods, and more.

First and Only New Harmony Technology Helps St.Louis Patients Create Younger Looking Skin
New fluorescence technology, now available in the St. Louis area, can help skin look younger, remove unwanted hair and reduce acne outbreaks without taking time off the job.
(PRWEB) September 6, 2005 -- New fluorescence technology, now available in the St. Louis area, can help skin look younger, remove unwanted hair and reduce acne outbreaks without taking time off the job.
That’s the reason why Dr. Carol Mischnick installed the Harmony “All-in-One” Advanced Fluorescence Technology Laser/Light System at her Creve Coeur “Fantastic Plastic” surgery practice. It is the first and only such unit currently available to St. Louis area patients.
The Harmony Laser/Light System is more comfortable with better results using fewer treatments than the older laser systems in popular use such as IPL. We can use four different light heads separately or in combination to treat various skin problems, Dr. Mischnick says.
With this new Harmony laser/light system, patients can see improvements after the first treatment, Dr. Mischnick, a board certified plastic surgeon, says. The system was recently awarded FDA approval following two years of patient tests in Europe.
Benefits of the Harmony light/laser system include quick and easy skin improvement that is very safe with no healing time required, Dr. Mischnick says. Patients experience smoother skin with reduced pore size, even skin tone, diminished redness and reduced acne.
With each treatment, the Harmony laser/light system “takes from 20 to 40 minutes where areas of skin receive a laser pulse lasting one-tenth of a second,” she says.
“Following each treatment, skin may appear red and flushed for 2 to 12 hours. Brown spots may turn darker for one to four days. The redness usually disappear after 30 minutes and brown spots fade or disappear within 15 days,” Dr. Mischnick says.
“Depending on skin condition, up to five treatments may be required,” she says. “Afterwards, patients will experience smoother skin with reduced pore size, more even skin tone, diminished unwanted redness, reduced rosacea and acne breakouts, plus many more advantages,” she says.
Many patients are pleased with the results, as Barbara Ainsworth of Keesport reports, "After my first treatment of Harmony Photofacial I immediately felt the usual tingle reaction on my skin, but about 6 hours later the difference was significant! I felt a drawing, a tightening in my cheeks, it was beneath the skin."
Dr. Mischnick has pioneered various procedures in St. Louis to improve patient lives. She was one of the first St. Louis plastic surgeons to use ultrasonic assisted liposuction.

FDA Approves First Qualified Health Claim for Chromium Picolinate and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
Fda concludes that chromium picolinate is safe. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a favorable response to a qualified health claim petition filed by Nutrition 21, recognizing chromium picolinate as a safe nutritional supplement that may reduce the risk of insulin resistance and possibly type 2 diabetes.
Purchase, N.Y. (PRWEB) September 2, 2005 -- The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a favorable response to a qualified health claim petition filed by Nutrition 21, recognizing chromium picolinate as a safe nutritional supplement that may reduce the risk of insulin resistance and possibly type 2 diabetes. In a letter to the Company, the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition concluded that there is credible evidence to support the following qualified health claim:
“One small study suggests that chromium picolinate may reduce the risk of insulin resistance, and therefore possibly may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. FDA concludes, however, that the existence of such a relationship between chromium picolinate and either insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes is highly uncertain.”
The FDA declined to permit other qualified health claims that were proposed by the Company. “The FDA's initial response, while a starting point, is an important milestone in our Company's effort to communicate the health benefits of our products, said Gail Montgomery, President and CEO of Nutrition 21. “We expect several conclusive peer-reviewed studies to publish in the months ahead that should help build evidence to support additional health claims for chromium picolinate as the first recognized supplement that may reduce the risk of insulin resistance and possibly type 2 diabetes.” Nutrition 21 holds the patent rights for those applications.
The study cited by the FDA was conducted by William Cefalu, MD, chief of the division of nutrition and chronic diseases at the Pennington BioMedical Research Center, Louisiana State University System. “Emerging research suggests that 200-1,000 mcg of chromium as chromium picolinate may play an important role in carbohydrate metabolism,” said Cefalu.
The FDA also concluded that chromium picolinate is safe, stating the following:
“FDA concludes at this time, under the preliminary requirements of 21 CFR 101.14(b)(3)(ii), that the use of chromium picolinate in dietary supplements as described in the [approved qualified health claims discussed in section IV is safe and lawful under the applicable provisions Act.”
Insulin Resistance and Diabetes
Insulin resistance is an epidemic condition that dramatically increases risk for type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke, estimated to affect one in three Americans, according to The American College of Endocrinology (ACE) and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE).
“The FDA ruling confirms our strategic investments in clinical research to differentiate Chromax® (http://www.chromax.com) and Diachrome® (http://www.diachrome.com) from other chromium supplements,” added Montgomery. “This qualified health claim should help health professionals and millions of consumers make better informed choices about reducing the risk of insulin resistance with chromium picolinate supplementation and possibly reducing the risk for type 2 diabetes.”
Health Claims for Dietary Supplements:
Because dietary supplements are under the "umbrella" of foods, FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) is responsible for the agency's oversight of these products. Health claims describe a relationship between a food, food component, or dietary supplement ingredient, and reducing risk of a disease or health-related condition. By law, manufacturers may make three types of claims for their dietary supplement products: health claims, structure/function claims, and nutrient content claims.
The FDA will allow appropriately qualified health claims for dietary supplements as well as conventional foods, when the link between the substance's ability to reduce the risk of the disease does not meet the standard of "significant scientific agreement." According to the FDA's website, these qualified claims are based on the weight of the scientific evidence, i.e., there is more evidence for than against the relationship. In October 6, 2000, FDA published its updated strategy that describes when the agency will exercise enforcement discretion to allow qualified dietary supplement claims for nutrient/disease relationships. http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/fr001006.html.

New Findings Highlight Cost Reduction During OPCAB Surgery When Perioperative Hypothermia is Prevented
Two non-related studies published recently in one of the leading cardiac surgery journal, reveal that a new Thermo-wrap technology preserves normothermia better than routine thermal care in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass.
Tel Aviv, Israel (PRWEB) September 2, 2005 -- Two non-related studies published recently in a leading cardiac surgery journal, reveal that new Thermo-wrap technology preserves normothermia better than routine thermal care in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB).
The first study, a prospective randomized trial recently published in The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (C. K. Hofer et.al, Switzerland), has evaluated the efficacy of 3 intraoperative warming systems on the maintenance of Normothermia during off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCABG). The study, which included 90 patients undergoing OPCAB surgery, reports that overall blood loss and transfusion requirements were reduced, indicating improved quality of perioperative care. The Swiss report supports earlier findings on cost reduction and perioperative hypothermia prevention. (Sessler, D.I., Complications and treatment of mild hypothermia, Anesthesiology, V 95, No 2, Aug 2001).
Perioperative disturbances of homeostasis resulting in increased perioperative bleeding and transfusion requirements are common complications in patients undergoing cardiac operations. With the resurgence of the off-pump technique for coronary artery bypass grafting, reduced perioperative bleeding and reduced use of blood products can be demonstrated.
However, according to clinical experience from the Institute of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care in Triemli City Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland, there are still a considerable number of patients needing transfusions. One important reason for this finding, according to Dr. Hofer’s research, may be the development of severe perioperative hypothermia during OPCABG, impairing coagulation pathways. Dr. Hofer concludes that normothermia during off-pump cardiac surgery can best be achieved by a circulating-water garment (Allon Thermoregulation System).
The second study published in The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, shows similar results. This, randomized, prospective, open-labeled, multi-center investigation, involved patients from the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Post-Anesthesia Care, Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, Tel Aviv, Israel (Chief investigator: Dr. N. Nesher and Prof, G. Urezky); the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio (Dr. S. Insler); and the Centre Cardiologie du Nord, Paris, France (Dr. P. Nataf).
It is currently held that mild-to-moderate hypothermia during cardiac surgery plays a protective role in preventing myocardial damage by reducing oxygen consumption, mainly in the heart. Data from Dr. Nesher’s study appears to contradict this conviction and suggests that the protective role of hypothermia may not bestow any benefit on patients undergoing OPCAB.
According to the author, there is no need to reduce a patient’s core temperature during OPCAB surgery, even to mild hypothermia, as was once considered desirable during these kinds of procedures. The study group treated with the Allon Thermoregulation System (MTRE Advanced Technologies Ltd, Or-Akiva, Israel) was associated with reduced levels of IL-6 and Troponin I and with improved hemodynamics, findings which suggest that normothermia is closely related to reduce inflammatory responses to stress and subsequently to a lower rate of myocardial damage.
In agreement with the first study, the authors of this multicenter study conclude that in contrast to routine thermal care, the Allon Thermoregulation System maintains core normothermia in more than 80% of patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery. Normothermia is associated with better cardiac and vascular conditions, a lower rate of cardiac injury, and a lower inflammatory response.

Exacta-Med® Oral Dispensers Eliminate Wrong-Route Errors And Inappropriate Clinical Line Connections
Baxa Corporation, a Denver-based manufacturer of medical devices and systems, offers the Exacta-Med Oral Dispenser specifically designed for safe oral liquid delivery. The Exacta-Med Dispenser’s design prevents the attachment of a luer needle hub and from engaging with a needleless connector, eliminating potential error from wrong-route oral liquid medication administration. Additionally, the dispenser is labeled “Oral Use Only,” further promoting patient safety.
Englewood, Colo. – September 2, 2005 – Baxa Corporation, a Denver-based manufacturer of medical devices and systems, offers the Exacta-Med Oral Dispenser specifically designed for safe oral liquid delivery. The Exacta-Med Dispenser's design prevents the attachment of a luer needle hub and from engaging with a needleless connector, eliminating potential error from wrong-route oral liquid medication administration. Additionally, the dispenser is labeled “Oral Use Only,” further promoting patient safety.
“Dosing oral liquid medications with standard luer syringes is unsafe and potentially hazardous because of the risk of wrong-route administration,” says Mark Thrasher, Market Manager for the oral dispenser product line. “The dispenser's syringe-like design provides convenient and accurate administration—that's why Exacta-Med Oral Dispensers are the global brand leader. They're a dependable, safe and exact oral dosing tool for infants and children.”
In the 1970's, Baxa realized the need to minimize the risk of wrong-route administration. A growing practice was to administer oral medications using hypodermic syringes. Even with an oral label, syringes inadvertently could be used to administer an oral medication into an IV site. Baxa set out to correct these potentially lethal situations.
“I was in a dark Isolette® about to administer medication to an infant when I realized how easy it would be to injure the baby by injecting oral medication into the IV line,” says Lynette Lewis, Clinical Resource Nurse at St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa Oklahoma. “The importance of the Exacta-Med Oral Dispenser became crystal clear to me at that moment.”
Baxa Corporation strives to enhance efficiencies in hospital pharmacies and ultimately improve patient safety. The company recently launched a three-part campaign for its oral dispenser line, aimed at educating pediatric and neonatal nurses on the risks of wrong-route drug administration. The campaign consisted of a letter with a request for dispenser samples as an action step, a complementary advertisement placed in the Journal of Pediatric Health Care and finally a three-dimensional mailer with an oral dispenser inside a custom box. Baxa has traditionally marketed its oral dispensers to hospital pharmacies and response to the nursing campaign have been strong to date.
