Ontario's Government are Trying to Achieve Clean Air by Eliminating Coal-fired Electricity Generation, but This Will Have Widespread Negative Consequences
Ontario's Government are Trying to Achieve Clean Air by Eliminating Coal-fired Electricity Generation, but this will have widespread negative consequences
Dublin (PRWEB) October 28, 2005 -- (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c26432) has announced the addition of Ontario's Energy Crunch: Why Phasing Out Coal Is An Unwise Strategy to their offering
The province of Ontario plans to eliminate all coal-fired electricity generation by 2009. How will this impact North American energy markets? Will rolling blackouts become a way of life in Ontario?
The unfolding scheme to eliminate coal-fired electricity generation in Ontario, Canada will have widespread negative consequences in the province and throughout the region, this report demonstrates. In its zeal to fulfill election promises about 'clean air,' Ontario's government is placing excessive reliance on expensive natural gas and unproven renewable energy sources.
This timely 90-page report analyzes the Liberal government's decision, and finds it based on faulty logic:
Over 50% of Ontario's smog problems result from emissions outside the province, carried there on prevailing winds. The coal-fired plants operated by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) are a relatively minor source of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and mercury. Fresh investment in proven 'clean coal' technology can greatly improve those plants' performances at lesser cost.
Ontario is making a rash gamble that will lead to economic chaos. Reliance on natural gas as an alternative to coal is foolhardy, given the growing mismatch between supply and demand throughout North America. Ontario will need to replace 7.3 GW of power, about 25% of its current output, by March 2008, and is unlikely to succeed without electricity imports. Ontario electricity prices are sure to rise sharply, causing hardship for the population in general, and industry in particular.
The government's decision - which is counter to world trends, and upsets an existing well-balanced portfolio of sources - is in response to intense 'green' pressure. The report shows how the debate has been skewed by fanciful epidemiological modeling, selective use of environmental data, dubious science and a general lack of realistic thought. It should be of vital interest to all electricity generators and consumers in all of North America.

How does Backwash Efficiency Affect Your Catalyst Bed Protection Filtration System?
Filtration systems are generally regenerated through a backwash cleaning cycle. The primary factors effecting backwash efficiency are • Available pressure differential • Backwash flow • Filter media characteristics.
(PRWEB) October 27, 2005 -- Available Pressure Differential:
During backwashing, the backwash differential pressure (between the backwash source and drain) should ideally be three to five times greater than the differential pressure across the dirty media.
In a feedstock filter, the maximum dirty differential pressure should not exceed 15 PSID, meaning the backwash liquid should be delivered at 45 - 75 PSID to maximize the cleaning efficiency.
Backwash Flow:
A sufficient flow rate of backwash liquid will also be required to regenerate the filtering media. The required flow rate will be primarily dependent upon the type of media selected.
Sufficient backwash flow along with sufficient backwash pressure will lead to hydro-shock cleaning effect and completely regenerate the media to its clean differential pressure.
Filter Media Characteristics:
The final component of filter regeneration is the media characteristics. By their very design, slotted wedge wire and woven wire mesh allow particles to be captured on the surface of the media, providing optimum particle release and media regeneration.
Sintered metal is multi-layered and can offer higher per-cake efficiencies, but can be difficult to regenerate. This leads to shorter run times and increased downtime.
In summary, feedstock filtration is an important aspect in efficiently refinery operation.
Protecting catalyst beds from particulate contamination prevents bed plugging and increases catalyst life.
Several factors affect filtration system efficiency and should be carefully considered when selecting a feedstock filtration system.

Coal Becomes the New Utility Fuel as Natural Gas Has Become the No.1 Headache - It’s No Longer the 'Cheap, Clean Bargain' That Solved Utilities' Environmental Problems
Research and Markets (researchandmarkets.com/reports/c26428) has announced the addition of Back To Coal: Why Utilities Must Reconsider This Cheap, Plentiful Fuel to their offering.
Dublin (PRWEB) October 27, 2005 -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c26428) has announced the addition of Back To Coal: Why Utilities Must Reconsider This Cheap, Plentiful Fuel to their offering.
Energy prices are soaring. Natural gas, in particular, has stopped being the 'cheap, clean bargain' that solved utilities' environmental problems. Instead, soaring natural gas prices have turned it into the No.1 headache for utilities. Poorly thought-out schemes to import
liquefied natural gas from OPEC nations aren't going to solve the mounting crisis. Just look at how OPEC is currently manipulating the price of crude oil. There's only one realistic answer, and it's coal.
Coal is cheap and plentiful. It's an ideal utility fuel. And it doesn't have to be 'dirty' or 'polluting' anymore. Back To Coal: Why Utilities Must Reconsider This Cheap, Plentiful Fuel is an up-to-the-minute, highly readable, comprehensive 228-page report that tells you in detail:
How coal combustion has evolved, detailing many new efficiency improvements
Why coal gasification is now a realistic contender for electricity generation
What's emerging in the way of efficient clean-up techniques to solve SOx, NOx and mercury problems
How gasification-based IGCCs will help utilities be the founders of a hydrogen economy, if they choose
How we're making progress in CO2 sequestration
How coal will beat the path to energy independence, long before renewables can hope to contribute
Drawing on interviews and the latest research, Back To Coal covers clean coal efforts worldwide, identifying the principal players and researchers. Concepts like biotech desulfurization and the role of large fuel cells in utility-scale plants are discussed in detail. Further, you'll find understandable explanations of over 15 gasification techniques and 35 stackgas treatment methods to help you make informed decisions about the best clean coal technology for your company.
Coal is coming back, make no mistake about that. About 100 US utilities are considering coal-fired investments, quite seriously. There's a coal-fired building boom in China, and serious research underway in Europe and Japan. Find out why players like AEP and GE are excited about the IGCC process. Find out why the largest US coal producer, Peabody Energy, is entering the generation business.

How to Protect your Fixed-bed Reactors from Contamination
How liquid filtration systems protect fixed-bed reactors from contamination, leading to extended catalyst life and longer run lengths.
(PRWEB) October 26, 2005 -- In the petroleum refining industry, catalysts represent a significant cost, so refineries are chiefly concerned with extending a catalyst's life as long as possible.
The simplest way to do this is to protect the fixed-bed reactor from becoming contaminated with dirt, carbon deposits, and other organic materials.
These items can cause the bed to plug, resulting in decreased reaction efficiency, and potentially require the unit to be brought down early. Catalysts must then be regenerated or replaced.
In general, catalyst bed protection requires the filtration of all particles larger than 25 microns from the feedstock stream. Particles that are smaller than 25 microns will pass through the reactor bed without plugging the catalyst.
Three major factors must be taken into consideration when selecting a proper filtration system:
• Flux rate
• Filtration media
• Clean ability
Flux Rate:
The size of the filtration system is dependent on the flux rate, which is defined s the flow rate per unit of filtration area.
For example, 100 gpm of VGO flowing through a filtration system with 50 ft2 of filtering area represents a flux rate of 2 gpm/ft2. It can be seen from this flux rate formula that an increase in filtration area will lead to a lower flux rate, which will in turn result in a lower velocity of the fluid as it passes through the media.
Lower flow velocity across the filtering media allows the formation of a porous cake on the surface of the media. This leads to longer run times between backwash cycles and increases efficiency in particle removal.
This cake formation also has the added benefit of preventing particles from becoming embedded in the media, allowing for easy removal of particulate during the backwash cleaning cycle.
Filtration Media and Clean ability:
When selecting a feedstock filtration system, another important consideration is media type and its clean ability.
Possible media choices include slotted wedge wire, woven wire mesh, and multi-layered sintered metal. Each one carries its own advantages and disadvantages, but perhaps the most critical consideration when choosing a feedstock filtration system is the ability to completely regenerate the filtration media to its original clean state.
If the media is not sufficiently cleaned, the result is shorter run times and will eventually require the filter to be bypassed for manual cleaning or media replacement.
In summary, feedstock filtration is an important aspect in efficiently refinery operation. Protecting catalyst beds from particulate contamination prevents bed plugging and increases catalyst life. Several factors affect filtration system efficiency and should be carefully considered when selecting a feedstock filtration system.

New Book from Business & Legal Reports Inc. Shows Environmental Compliance Managers How to Make Their Case to Management
"The whole world is trying to steal our customers, and these guys just don’t understand." BLR’s new book explains how EHS Managers can make their business case and win the support of top management for environmental initiatives.
Old Saybrook, CT (PRWEB) October 25, 2005 -- It’s a common challenge among the nation’s environmental managers, the professionals who keep their organizations in compliance with federal and state environmental regulations: How do you get management buy-in to needed environmental programs? Likewise, if top management was asked to report on their environmental managers’ performance, you might sometimes probably hear a version of this: “They just don’t understand the business pressures we face, the whole world is trying to steal our customers, and these guys want to save some snail darters.”
To help bridge this gap Business & Legal Reports, Inc. (BLR) has just released a practical new handbook -- Making the Business Case for EHS. Written by Robert B. Pojasek, Ph.D. an international authority on process development and Adjunct Professor at Harvard University, the book lays out the concrete steps that EHS (environmental health and safety) managers must take to get support for their environmental initiatives. This BLR guidebook helps EHS managers align processes and systems with the goals of senior management, and translate initiatives into bottom line results.
A key concept is for EHS managers to understand business value, and why financial performance is top management’s central goal. Pojasek explains 10 “EHS Business Value Principles” and 8 “Business Value Tactics” that show EHS managers how to get support for programs on the basis of the business value they add to the organization. The Tactics are illustrated through charts, checklists, and worksheets -- which are also included on a bonus CD.
The handbook features three case studies that explain in step-by-step detail how an autobody refinishing operation, a paint manufacturer, and an outboard motor company translated these principles into management support for EHS -- along with a better bottom line.
As part of the launch of Making the Business Case for EHS, BLR is offering a free White Paper that highlights the ten EHS Business Value Principles. The paper may be downloaded at http://www.blr.com/81001600/PRS58.

These professional videos were prepared by the Disclosure Project, headed by Dr. Steven Greer, and were underwritten with sizeable funds for high-quality production. They were prepared to serve as testimony that will stand up in court. They document that there are viable new energy technologies which could rid us of our dependence on polluting fossil fuels, and that there have been active efforts in suppressing these. Explosively, these videos reveal names and tactics of this resistance against scientific progress.
This power-packed series includes testimony from Tom Bearden; Thomas Vallone, Paul Czysz, Hal Puthoff, David Hamilton, Ted Loder, Paul LaViolette, several of whom hold PhDs, and all of whom are held in high esteem by their peers in the field of clean energy. Each video is between 45 minutes and an hour in length.
The work of Nikola Tesla is a common theme in these affidavit video interviews. Their combined witness provides a powerful impetus for us to put pressure on our elected officials and demand that they to support the development and penetration into the marketplace of clean energy devices and infrastructure – with the same vigor with which they approached the Manhattan project or the Apollo Project.
As a sampling from the seven videos, Lt. Col. Tom Bearden says that the scientific community must stop snubbing these technologies, and that their doing so has very little to do with science, and very much to do with the politics of science.
Bearden warns that if we do not do something of this magnitude, but only continue to give marginal attention to this matter through token legislation and half-hearted scientific dabbling, then the handwriting on the wall spells our doom. The momentum of “peak oil” continues to drive fuel prices upward, fomenting international unrest which risks creating the kind of Armageddon scenario warned of in the Bible and promoted in pop culture: weapons of mass destruction begin to be unleashed by nations panicking when the traditional energy supplies are choked off. None of this need happen, if the alternatives are developed with all speed, says Bearden.
The testimonials assert that the private sector can do a huge amount to reverse the present disastrous course. Because these technologies are superior in every way – more efficient and more cost-effective ¬– they will create a stronger bottom line for companies promoting them.
In launching their new website, the Open Source Energy Network hopes to also launch another revolution -- the open sourcing of energy technologies. Rather than penury, secrecy and cutthroat battles over patents, the model of co-operation offers to researchers and inventors the best way to beat the suppression of these long-overdue developments and gain sufficient support to achieve optimum results. With the combined efforts of many trained and creative minds, the extracting of clean, free, renewable, and inexhaustible energy – whether it be from the sun, wind, tide, geothermal, from the vacuum of space, or from properties of magnetism and inter-planetary and inter-stellar electricity not yet fully understood – will be realized in our generation.
Matthew L. Carson, co-founder of OSEN, who secured permission to publish the videos, says that "this seven-pack video set of disclosure videos is an apropos way to introduce OSEN to the world."

'Saudi Arabia Exposed' Most Important And Revealing Book on Kingdom In Years: UPI
John R. Bradley's new book is "the most revealing and important on the real Saudi Arabia to have been published."
(PRWEB) October 24, 2005 -- "Saudi Arabia Exposed: Inside a Kingdom in Crisis," a controversial best-selling new book by John R. Bradley, is "the most revealing and important on the real Saudi Arabia to have been published in years," according to the veteran editor of United Press International, Martin Walker.
Despite being the country that sits on one quarter of the world's known oil reserves, and that provided three quarters of the known hijackers for the Sept. 11 attacks organized by Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden, Saudi Arabia remains an enigma to most people in the West.
But "there is no more excuse for ignorance" among Westerners now that they have Mr Bradley's book to turn to, Mr Walker adds in his lengthy UPI review essay on "Saudi Arabia Exposed" just published.
Bill Tammeus, a prominent columnist with Knight Ridder newspapers, last month reported that "Saudi Arabia Exposed" is being hailed by critics as “the best book on the country in decades.”
"Saudi Arabia Exposed" (Palgrave Macmillan, $22.95) has been singled out by The New York Times as “highly insightful,” by Newsweek as “remarkable,” and by the Los Angeles Times Book Review as contributing “significantly to the debate” because of Mr. Bradley's “unique vantage.”
Mr. Bradley, 35, was the only permanently-based, fully accredited Arabic-speaking Western journalist in Saudi Arabia for 2.5 years, from three months before the 9/11 attacks. He traveled extensively through all of the kingdom's regions -- crucially without a government minder.
In a recent issue of The Nation, long-time New Yorker writer Milton Viorst wrote that in "Saudi Arabia Exposed" Mr. Bradley “uses a graceful journalist's pen to write with scholarly authority," and "shows a sensitivity rare for a Westerner, reaching directly to the society's core."

Rancho Santa Margarita, California (PRWEB) October 24, 2005 -- The American Youth Soccer Organization has chosen APSCREEN, the world’s leading full-service Consumer Reporting Agency, to provide searches for national sex offenders to be included into AYSO’s background screening process. The AYSO, an affiliate member of the US Soccer Federation, now joins numerous organizations using this free service including the Girls Scouts of America.
Ellisa Hall, National Administrator for AYSO, “We are grateful for access to APSCREEN’s national sex offender registry. For the last 40 years, the AYSO has provided a safe, fair, fun sport experience for hundreds of thousands of youngsters all across the U.S. We take seriously the charge to protect players, volunteers and family members, and this valuable information provides one more critical layer to our Safe Haven Program.”
There is no registration or fee for the service and anyone who has a computer and access to the Internet and a web browser can use it. Should a person have any reason to suspect that someone in their neighborhood, school district or community might have a sex crime history they can go directly to www.nationalsexoffenderregistry.net and enter the name of the subject and have a good chance of locating information about a sex offender's history. Currently the database covers 34 states and 12 local areas for a total of 46 jurisdictions. Most of the time, the sex crime records contain enough personal information to verify the identity of a suspect, or provide a lead to pursue further research.
Tom Lawson, CFE, CII & Founder of APSCREEN, comments, "We practically invented background checks over 25 years ago when few companies understood the need to screen prospective applicants. Now we want to give this free service back to the community because we feel so strongly about the protection and safety of our children. We mean it to be used in conjunction with other tools including other sites such as the FBI’s national sex offender registry and the Megan’s Law website provided by the California Attorney General’s office.”

OSEN Launches Site for Open-Sourcing Clean Energy
Website launch provides inventors and users with tools of collaboration for shared advancement of clean, free, and renewable energy technology solutions. Believes that open sourcing, which has been such a boon to the software community, can be just as much so, if not more for the energy world.
Vancouver, B.C., Canada -- Several months in the making, today the Open Source Energy Network (OSEN.org) opens its new website to the public.
The operative word in summarizing the project is "Network", and the focus is on clean, free, and renewable energy technology, both in advancing it as a science as well as making it available for everyone.
The non-profit company's site is designed to facilitate the collaborative development of new energy technologies and understanding. Its set of tools to facilitate that cooperation is long and impressive, made possible by the generous underwriting primarily of its co-founder, the youthful entrepreneur Jon Peters. His financial infusions have been in the six figures, covering expenses and providing stipends for more than half a dozen people involved in building the site and its tools.
The primary passion of OSEN is to provide a fertile environment for the open sharing of key energy ideas that can see the emergence of viable -- even superior -- alternatives to our current dependence as a society on polluting energy sources such as oil, gas, and coal. The guiding philosophy of OSEN is that because open sourcing has proven fruitful in the world of software, it is also sure to do so the world of energy as well. The site is offered as a premier tool to facilitate that open sharing with the most brilliant minds on the subject worldwide.
"By open sourcing energy technology, the problem of the suppression of new and revolutionary technologies is eliminated because there is strength in numbers," says Matthew L. Carson, co-founder of OSEN. "Once it's in the open it's going to stays there." He goes on to say that open sourcing has another key benefit. "By open sourcing the core technology and breeding competition on the service, installation, maintenance and integration of a technology the consumer wins. Good ethical businesses can win by making an honest profit based on true value to consumer and a job well done. The time for irresponsible profiteering at the expense of humanity has come to an end. The Open Source model has done truly amazing things in software, it will do amazing things for energy and it wont stop there."
In Vancouver, you will see Matthew tooling around in a Hummer converted to run on vegetable oil and hydrogen. People are always asking him how they can convert their diesel cars and trucks. That is one of the purposes of the site: to provide collaboratively-built “how-to” instructions with clear visual aids, so that non-experts can see results similar to what the engineers and geeks are achieving.
The "Projects" section list various open-source projects presently under way. In that directory there is a link to create a new project. If you have a bright new idea for a device or machine, and are willing to open it up to public input and sharing of effort, you are encouraged to do so using your own OSEN Project Page as a worldwide access point.
Each week, OSEN plans to present a show called Energetic Garage™ which will feature some kind of gadget tinkering.
OSEN staff is eagerly standing by to assist you with any questions you might have about how to use the site and to build new pages.
Perhaps OSEN's greatest strength is in their professionalism. They bring “class” to just about everything they tackle. Watch one of their many videos, produced by Marcus Cameron with graphics by Torrance Hurd, and you will see that the CNN kind of classy feel has now arrived in the world of "bleeding-edge" energy technology research that is not covered but rarely in the mainstream media. Listen to the daily "Today in Free Energy™" radio spot, a four-to-eight minute segment with anchor, Charlee Redman, and you will be hooked.
OSEN's selection of directory listings and news regarding cutting-edge energy technology from around the world comes from the three-year-old news reporting and directory service of Sterling Allan's PES Network Inc., which is presently in process of merging with OSEN -- an example of the networking that is the hallmark of the Open Source Energy NETWORK.
Not only can you read the latest news in the field, but you can create your own news portal to display the news you wish to track, based on keywords and directory connection. You can also submit a news item, either a single news bullet linking to another site, or a news exclusive of your own composition. There is also a news page featuring live feeds from various energy news services around the world. There is also a news page featuring the live feeds from various energy news services around the world.
Of course OSEN has a live feed as well for interested parties to pick up and display on their sites. The OSEN staff has several people talented in preparing fascinating news, as well as in composing exclusive stories. They will be interviewing the leaders in the field, and capturing the essence of what they are and do -- as well as accurately explaining why and how they do it.
OSEN's vast directory of pages covers topics from solar and geothermal to cold fusion and magnet motors. Inventor profiles are also featured, along with other energy issues such as global warming and the high costs of oil dependence.
With a revenue-generating capability based on quality of content, traffic, and sales of items related to the directory topic, each directory page invites an editorial staff to come forward and take up the reins. The directory manager who assumes active responsibility and produces high-quality content will receive a sizable chunk of the revenue generated by the page or group of pages that he or she builds and maintains.
Thus OSEN’s Directory system combines the Open Source Directory Project (dmoz.org) model of editors with the paid-editor model of Yahoo, but with many times more passion that the quest for clean energy instills in people.
The "Sites" feature enables you to easily create a link to energy-related websites, whether one you own, or one that interests you. And by setting your own filter preferences, you can customize the way this page displays.
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds sprinkle every page of the site, enabling you to track closely the pages of interest.
And of course there is a 'blog' section, which lists not just the OSEN blog, but other related blogs too. If it is related to cutting edge, clean energy technology, you are welcome to add one of your own if you want.
The website offers unlimited bandwidth and memory. You can upload a video of your latest experimental results. Post the data spreadsheet for your peers to review and comment. Join in a discussion on the discussion board about your project. Create an index page to organize the material relating to your project. Manage your group contacts privately among those with proper access rights in your project.
While the SharePoint software that runs the infrastructure of the website is a Microsoft product, OSEN does not see that as being too harsh of a contradiction to the "open source" concept that they promote when it comes to energy technology development. While Microsoft does provide the basic chassis, there is a huge world of open source development that supports the many plug-ins and options available. So it really is the case that the back-end that drives the OSEN website was built by the very kind of open collaboration that OSEN hopes to foster among inventors of technology.
On the fun side (if you're hot already having fun on the site), OSEN is running a contest for a slogan that characterizes its nature and activity in a catchy way that will appeal to the public. Site users will be able to vote on the slogan they like best. The slogan-contest winner will receive $50.00 and an OSEN T-shirt. Future contests will be ran for visual design elements and musical jingles, among other things -- an idea tacked on by OSEN's editor, Mary-Sue Haliburton.

We are also utilizing and testing the "Airgen" fuel cell generator by Ballard Technologies, that is fueled by hydrogen and can produce 1500 watts of power (1 kW), which can power basic small home appliances with natural energy without using any plug in power. We are basically off-grid that is a big step for our research and development team. Cost efficient energy applications are one of our goals for the residential homeowners," stated Mr. Vergara.
The New Energy Bill Extends Wind Power Incentives, Production Tax Credit, and other incentives are soon to be signed into law by the end of the year. Up to 2,500 megawatts of wind energy capacity are scheduled to come on line in the U.S. this year, bringing new power to the equivalent of 700,000 homes and injecting over $3 billion of investment into the power generation sector. With the timely extension of the Production Tax Credit (PTC) the American Wind Energy Association anticipates that strong growth momentum will continue in 2006 and 2007.
Energy Ventures Organizations combined research, design, and development of its hydrogen generator, along with solar and wind is happy to be partnering with Apollo Resources to attain its goals and future objectives." We plan to make hydrogen, solar and wind technologies and other systems an accepted concept that can be an integrated option for distributed-energy production for both on and off the electric power grid.
The future for Energy Ventures Organization is to add significant reliability, diversity and security to the U.S. Energy System and improve the quality of life in this country by expanding inexpensive electricity to all. And to significantly reduce the environmental signature (air emissions) by displacing fossil fuel energy systems with cost effective solar energy systems and other alternative power.
The Energy Policy Act of 2005(H.R. 6) establishes a 30% tax credit up to 2,000 for the purchase of residential photovoltaic (solar electric) and solar water heating. An individual can take both a 30% credit up to $2,000 cap for a photovoltaic system and a 30% credit up to $2,000 cap for a solar water heating system. A 30% tax credit up to $500 per 0.5 kW is also available for fuel cells. The credit is calculated based on the individual's expenditures excluding subsidized energy financing which is defined as "financing provided under a Federal, State, or local program, a principal purpose of which is to provide subsidized financing for projects designed to conserve or produce energy" We at Energy Ventures Organization are committed to that success.

KUA Honored for Community Service
The Florida Municipal Electric Association on Oct. 18 honored Kissimmee Utility Authority with its 2005 Florida Community Service Award for exemplary public service to the community.
Kissimmee, FL (PRWEB) October 20, 2005 -- The Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) on Oct. 18 honored Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) with its 2005 Florida Community Service Award for exemplary public service to the community.
FMEA Executive Director Barry Moline presented the award to KUA during ceremonies held at the association's annual Energy Connections Workshop & Trade Show in Daytona Beach.
The award is given annually to utilities whose achievement or sustained performance shows a commitment or the commitment of its employees to enhance the quality of life in a community. This is provided through social, cultural, educational, environmental and economic programs and by providing opportunity for employee involvement.
"I am delighted that KUA has received statewide recognition for its work in the local community," said KUA president and general manager Jim Welsh. "It is only fitting that a community that supports its utility should be supported in return."
In the past year, KUA supported 143 community projects and activities that directly impacted 468,800 individuals. Notable projects included the funding of the "Flee to be Free" child abduction awareness program as well as immunization programs and youth swimming lessons for families unable to afford them.
Based in Tallahassee, FMEA is a service organization that represents Florida's 33 municipally-owned electric utilities and the more than 2.8 million people these utilities serve.

KUA Readies for Hurricane Wilma
Kissimmee Utility Authority is watching Hurricane Wilma closely and reviewing the utility's emergency procedures to restore electricity as quickly and safely as possible should the storm strike the Kissimmee area.
Kissimmee, FL (PRWEB) October 20, 2005 -- Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) is watching Hurricane Wilma closely and reviewing the utility's emergency procedures to restore electricity as quickly and safely as possible should the storm strike the Kissimmee area.
KUA's management team met Wednesday morning to review emergency plans and discuss possible activation of the utility's emergency operations command center. The utility also reviewed its mutual aid agreements that would bring additional crews from other utilities to Kissimmee to provide restoration assistance if needed.
"We are ready to respond if the storm affects our service area," said Jim Welsh, KUA's president and general manager. "We're back to full staff and ready to go."
KUA just recently got all of its service crews back after sending many of them to Mississippi to help restore electric service in areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
If power goes out, KUA advises customers to check all circuit breakers or fuses to help determine if the outage might be the result of a household problem.
Customers who experience a power outage are asked to call the utility's 24-hour outage line at 407-933-7777. After severe weather, KUA crews restore power by repairing power plants, transmission lines, substations and main distribution lines. Once the main power lines are repaired, crews turn their attention to individual customer outages.
KUA reminds customers to be safe as the storm passes through the area and offers these safety reminders:
* Stay away from downed lines, and warn others to do the same. Contact KUA or local emergency officials to report downed lines.
* Do not venture out in the dark because it is difficult to see a downed power line that could still be energized and dangerous.
* Wait a reasonable amount of time before calling KUA to report an outage if your entire neighborhood is without power. The utility can electronically detect widespread outages. Extra calls only jam switchboards.
* Do not connect portable generators to your home's household wiring. This can send electricity back out onto the power lines, seriously injuring or killing linemen working in your neighborhood. Only connect appliances directly to the generator.
* Keep freezer doors closed and sealed. Well-filled freezers keep most foods frozen two to three days if the door is kept closed.
* Turn off large appliances and air conditioners until after the power has been restored.
* Turn off your breakers if you live in a flood prone area.
* Do not attempt to remove or trim foliage within 10 feet of a power line.
* Please be patient. KUA crews will work as fast as safety allows.
Founded in 1901, KUA (www.kua.com) is Florida's sixth largest community-owned utility providing electric and telecommunication services to 170,000 residents in five Central Florida counties.

New Inpro/Seal Literature Entitled “Target Lip Seals" Is Valuable Tool, Part Of Interactive Package
Brochure provides detail about the history and use of lip seals and provides alternatives to using this method of sealing.
(PRWEB) October 20, 2005 -- Inpro/Seal, the Rock Island, IL, based manufacturer of bearing isolators has just unveiled Target Lip Seals, literature that details the use of Rubber Lip Seals in the process industries.
Unique Reader Reference
Part of the firm’s interactive package on bearing protection, the literature is a valuable source of information and useful tool to anyone involved in the management, maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) of pumps and other types of rotating equipment used in industrial/process plants. It contains important information about the use of lip seals including:
. History of Lip Seals
. Charts, Graphs, Cost Calculators, Application and Technical Data
. Lip Seals In The Mechanical Universe
. Misapplication Of Lip Seals
. Life Cycle Aspects
. Why Continuous Duty Equipment Needs A Permanent Seal
. Lip Seals Consume Power
. Less Is Not Better/Contact Seal Misconception
. Where Lip Seals Should And Shouldn’t Be Used
. The Real Cost Of Lip Seals
. Lip Seals Are Not As Cheap As You Think
. Contact Seal Alternatives That Are Reusable And Never Wear
. Why Contact Seals Have A 100% Failure Rate
. How To Save Money, Conserve Energy And Add To The Bottom Line
Author Is Industry Expert
The literature and much of the interactive package was authored by David C. Orlowski, President and founder of Inpro/Seal Company. Well known for his knowledge of bearings, bearing protection and tribilogy, Orlowski has spent the last 41+ years working on ways to enhance and extend the service life of rotating equipment. The holder of some 40 patents, he was awarded patent protection (#4,022,479) for the original bearing isolator (#4,022,479) in 1977, inventing the term “bearing isolator” in the process.
That Was Then/This Is Now
When lip seals were first introduced back in the 1930’s, they were only the sealing device available for general use. Convenient and inexpensive, they enjoyed a 99% market share when it came to sealing industrial rotating equipment.
The literature goes on to state that according to the lip seal manufacturers, at best they have a life cycle of 1,844 hours or 77 days of operation. In the world of non-industrial equipment such as (bicycle wheels, wheel bearings, mowers, washing machines, tractors), this is acceptable, as it works out to equipment life of some 120,000 miles or more than 3 years of use. A few may survive as long as 3,000 hours. In the 1950’s, lip seals were used to retain grease on aircraft landing gear wheels. Because this was intermittent duty use, long operating life was not a consideration.
It the world of continuous, heavy duty industrial machinery (pumps, motors, gearboxes, etc.) 3,000 hours or 4.1 months is simply unacceptable. The author feels that with this kind of life cycle, it is not meant for sealing these types of applications. Though no one knows when a lip seal is going to stop working, the end user can tell when its time is up – the equipment on which it is applied breaks down or the lip seal burns to a crisp and grooves the shaft.
The literature also addresses power consumption and states that lip seals consume, on average, 147 watts of power. To show how significant this is, a plant with 500 pumps in operation can run up annual costs in excess of $97,000 for energy to drive the lip seal.
The End User Has A Choice
According to Orlowski, “In the 1970’s with the invention of bearing isolator, permanent bearing protection became available, giving the end user a sealing choice. A non-contacting labyrinth type seal, bearing isolators can run 150,000 hours (17 years) or more, eliminating the need for continual maintenance and repair.
Orlowski continued, “Rotating equipment is designed to operate for at least five years. Rolling element bearings have a design life of 150,000 hours (17 years). With a finite life and a 100% failure rate, it does not make sense to lose time and money trying to make a contacting seal work.
Orlowski concluded, “Bearing isolators, on the other hand are non-contacting and do not wear out. And, as rotating equipment is routinely maintained and repaired, the bearing isolators can be used over and over for many years.”

Vulcan Minerals Inc. Flat Bay #3 Locates More Oil
St. John’s, Newfoundland (PRWEB) October 20, 2005 -- Vulcan Minerals Inc. (“the Company” TSX-V: VUL), is pleased to announce that the Flat Bay #3 well has been drilled and logged to total depth and has penetrated oil bearing formation over the following intervals, representing the largest intervals yet seen in the area:
§ 40-135m anhydrite-fractured cap rock
§ 140-210m conglomerate
§ 215-225m conglomerate
§ 235-240m conglomerate
§ 270-275m siltstone-sandstone
The oil presence is based on fluorescence in the cuttings similar to that seen in Flat Bay #1 (300m north of Flat Bay #3) where oil has been recovered from the wellbore and the Flat Bay test core hole where live oil was present in core. The oil in Flat Bay #3 did not flow into the well bore under open hole conditions. The reservoir is interpreted to be of low permeability inhibiting oil flow. The well was located on the edge of an inferred fault zone where natural fracturing was interpreted to occur. Cuttings from Flat Bay #3 indicate the presence of fracturing and this has probably resulted in the oil penetrating the thickest oil section yet seen in the area, particularly in the anhydrite cap rock. In order to better ascertain the geometry of the fracture system, which would enhance any potential oil recovery, the Company is preparing to acquire additional seismic and high-resolution aeromagnetics over the Flat Bay area. The exploration focus will be on fracture identification for reservoir enhancement that may be exploitable by horizontal drilling or enhanced recovery techniques. Flat Bay #3 again demonstrates that a substantial active petroleum system is in place in the Flat Bay structure.
The Company has mobilized its rig to the Hurricane #1 location approximately 15 kilometres south of the Flat Bay structure. The Hurricane structure is a large feature on the southern portion of the Flat Bay Anticline. Reconnaissance seismic indicates it could cover an area in excess of 100 square kilometres. It has several fault compartments that will require multiple wells to adequately test the feature. The Hurricane #1 well will test the updip end of a fault block and will penetrate target horizons consisting of supra-evaporite sandstones, sub-evaporite sandstones (equivalent to the Flat bay conglomerate) and a deeper seismically anomalous section that may represent lower most Carboniferous sediments or Ordovician/Cambrian platform sediments. Thus multiple target horizons will be penetrated enroute t
