Game Console Development Doesn't Have to be a War Of The Worlds
Nurve Networks LLC developers of the XGameStation Micro Edition educational game console kit releases the new XGameStation Pico Edition.
Silicon Valley, CA (PRWEB) June 29, 2005 -- Nurve Networks LLC's new XGameStation Pico Edition educational game console development kit is now shipping worldwide. The Pico Edition is a follow up to the previously released pre-assembled XGameStation Micro Edition. The Pico Edition is for students and hobbyists that actually want to build the system by hand from a kit of parts. The Pico Edition comes as a kit complete with a solderless breadboard and all the components to build an entire working game console in about 1-2 hours.
Video games generate billions of dollars in revenue each year and game programming books occupy rows of bookstore shelf space. Video game development has made its way into college curriculums and entire game programming universities have emerged. But video games run on advanced hardware, the design of which is a black art that few understand.
For more than a decade, books by Computer Scientist and best-selling game development author Andre LaMothe (his latest title "Tricks of the 3D Game Programming Gurus") have taught generations of game developers to create today's cutting-edge video games. Now, his focus is changing from video game software to video game hardware with the unveiling of the XGameStation Micro and Pico Editions, a revolutionary new way to learn about the hardware that goes into building game consoles themselves.
The XGameStation Pico Edition (XGS PE) is a complete game development kit inspired by classic systems such as the Atari 2600, 800, Apple II, C64 and Nintendo Entertainment System. The XGS PE kit includes a kit complete with all the parts, necessary cables, an eBook written by Andre LaMothe on the design and programming of the XGS Pico Edition along with all the software necessary to create your own games, demos, and experiments.
Armed with a complete understanding of how the system was built and operates, users then create their own games or play games made by their peers. The online community at http://www.xgamestation.com completes the system's appeal, providing a place for XGameStation developers to share ideas, software and even discuss hardware modifications.
The system plugs into any NTSC TV and supports vintage Atari 2600 controllers. XGameStation Pico Edition's games and applications are stored on the internal processor's Flash memory, allowing users to develop and download their games from a PC using the accompanying tools.
In short, by empowering hobbyists and game developers with a game platform they can truly call their own, the XGameStation Pico and Micro Editions are reviving the magic of programming and hardware hacking for systems like the Apple II, Atari 800 and Commodore 64.
The official Website for the XGameStation is http://www.xgamestation.com, where you will find Media, Downloads, Demos, and more information on purchasing the XGS Pico and Micro Editions.

CA2 Metric Tie Rod Cylinder
SMC Corporation of America, the world’s largest manufacturer of pneumatic automation products has incorporated several innovative design features into their newly redesigned CA2 metric cylinder series. The design improvements include a 5 to 15% reduction in weight, a 30% increase in cushioning capabilities and an improved “floating” cushion seal.
Indianapolis, IN (PRWEB) June 29, 2005 -- The weight reduction was achieved by adopting aluminum die cast covers, allowing additional material removal compared to the previous casting method. In addition, the cushioning capabilities were improved by increasing the volume of the cushion chamber and through the use of a “floating” cushion seal. The new seal reduces jerky movements of the piston rod at lower operating pressures and increases the seal life significantly. As a result, these new design features allow 30% more kinetic energy absorption during the cushioning at the end of the stroke.
The CA2 series is also available with SMC’s new line of direct mount auto switches. This style of auto switch is a space-saving feature and can be installed within the envelope dimensions of the cylinder covers.

re2, Inc. announced today that it has signed a subcontract with the university to provide software engineering expertise and its JAUS (Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems) Developer Library for the System Development and Demonstration (SDD) phase of the U.S. Marine Corps’ Gladiator Tactical Unmanned Ground Vehicle (TUGV) Program. The Gladiator TUGV will provide the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) with a tele-operated unmanned ground vehicle for remote combat, reconnaissance and surveillance tasks, allowing the operator to remain safely concealed at a distance.
Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) June 28, 2005 -- re2, Inc. (Robotics Engineering Excellence), a Carnegie Mellon University spin-off company specializing in mobile defense robotics, announced today that it has signed a subcontract with the university to provide software engineering expertise and its JAUS (Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems) Developer Library for the System Development and Demonstration (SDD) phase of the U.S. Marine Corps’ Gladiator Tactical Unmanned Ground Vehicle (TUGV) Program. The Gladiator TUGV will provide the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) with a tele-operated unmanned ground vehicle for remote combat, reconnaissance and surveillance tasks, allowing the operator to remain safely concealed at a distance.
re2, Inc.’s JAUS Developer Library, a software development toolkit that quickly and easily enables organizations to implement JAUS-compliant systems, will be integrated into the TUGV software system to ensure that the vehicle is JAUS compliant. JAUS is a Department of Defense (DoD) mandated software architecture developed to establish a standard for unmanned systems. JAUS ensures that all Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV) are interoperable, can insert new capabilities easily, and remain open and scalable. In addition to UGVs, JAUS can also be integrated into unmanned air, surface or underwater commercial or military vehicles.
“We’re extremely pleased that Carnegie Mellon has selected re2 to provide our software expertise and commercially off-the-shelf JAUS Developer Library to the SDD phase of the TUGV program,” said Jorgen Pedersen, president and CEO of re2, Inc. “By being a part of this program, re2 further solidifies its position as a valued robotics engineering subcontractor in the unmanned systems market.”
“The Gladiator program is important for the Marines because it provides them with remote stand-off capability to locate, identify, and engage enemy targets,” said Colonel Jeff Kotora USMC (ret), Chair of the JAUS Working Group. “re2’s JAUS work for Gladiator is a key aspect to ensure that Gladiator robots and subsystems are interoperable and upgradeable over the long term.”
Carnegie Mellon's National Robotics Engineering Consortium (NREC), a part of the Robotics Institute in the School of Computer Science, leads a team that includes United Defense as principal subcontractor and teammate. Carnegie Mellon will lead the SDD phase of the program as prime contractor, working closely with United Defense to draw on its experience in program management, engineering, integration and integrated logistics support tasks as Gladiator development moves toward production and fielding. re2, Inc. will work directly with the NREC, located off campus in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh, as an integral part of the software development team.
re2, Inc. initially joined Carnegie Mellon’s Gladiator TUGV program in February 2003. Environmentally Friendly Cleaning with Light Reduces Costs
The innovative laser cleaning systems produced by Cleanlaser Systems from Germany, come to the UK. Used throughout the world for industrial and restoration cleaning, the equipment offers power and versatility, uses no water or chemicals and has the lowest cleaning running costs.
(PRWEB) June 17, 2005 -- CIProcess Ltd, the UK-based, innovative Cleaning and Process Systems company, announces that it is the exclusive distributor in the United Kingdom of laser cleaning systems produced by Clean Laser Systems in Aachen, Germany.
Developed over the last 10 years, the innovative laser cleaning systems combine power and versatility, with the lowest operating cost of all industrial cleaning methods. They offer a safe cleaning method and are environmentally friendly, using no water or chemicals and producing no effluent.
Primarily used for industrial cleaning and surface treatment, renovation and paint removal applications they also remove contaminants, production residue and coatings without damaging the substrate. Metallic and reflective surfaces are ideal although other substrates can be addressed.
Operating costs are reduced, through downtime minimization, low running costs and life span extension, with ROI paybacks of fewer than 12 months often achieved. They are easy to automate and can be integrated into existing manufacturing lines, to be used on-line and in-place without damaging equipment or requiring machine dismantling.
In use with leading companies and governments throughout the world, there are over 65 Cleanlaser systems in operation. Standard units are available in 120-W and 500-W versions, in portable or stationary versions, and special designs are also available.
Dave Adams, the technical director of CIProcess, reports "Laser cleaning is a precise, cost-effective method for cleaning when traditional methods fall short. Cleaning lasers are adept at removing additives, colorants, grease, rust, and other contaminants, while also minimizing abrasion and heat build-up.”
The Nd:YAG pulsed, solid-state lasers direct a high precision programmable scanning beam of up to 0.5mm diameter. The cleaning surface reflects laser energy and is minimally affected, however, any contaminants on the surface absorb the laser energy and are quickly vaporized, with any fumes or particulates removed by an in-built filter.
The cleaning stops when the contaminant is consumed, and consequently there is a minimal heat build-up, avoiding the microscopic roughening and cracking of metal surfaces that can be present when using traditional cleaning methods.
Cleanlaser systems are currently in use in the automobile, aerospace, bakery, food, electronics, restoration and other industries. New applications are constantly emerging and clients are invited to discuss their applications and submit their products and processes for testing in Cleanlaser’s laboratories.
The Cleanlaser systems are part of CIProcess’s extensive range of innovative cleaning and processing equipment including CIP/COP systems, innovative blast cleaning systems, skids, electrical and hygienic installations.

"New Release- Sci-Fi Book, 'Unlimited Energy', Written for Women as Well as Men - in Time to Stimulate, G 8, Live 8, Discussions; Plus will Give a New Dimension to Renewable Energy Ideas"
'Unlimited Energy' is a multi-level predictive fiction set in 2022, that sets out to solve the looming energy and pollution crisis of the time. It uses cutting edge science to bring about realizable solutions. Mind Control, at a new level for those worried about Conspiracy theory and machines. Released in time for, live 8, G8, this will give impact to the discussions.
(PRWEB) June 11, 2005 -- In reading, ‘Unlimited Energy’ I first thought the book which was released today, June 1, was going to be just a frolic in the near future. It has turned out to be much more and has a depth, which, in view of the fact that it was written four years ago, will stagger many scientists and energy corporations. This is a positive example of. ‘How to Change the World’
'Unlimited Energy’ explains many things in a simple manner and extraordinarily coincides with today’s revelation from the ‘Millennium Project’. eg. One page of the book describes the start of the universe in terms of dark matter, and super fluid vortices and gravitational containment effects in a way that is understandable.
Going even further is the effect of light on the Galaxy and the involvement of light and its shearing effect on the cosmos. The effects of capturing huge amounts of light in super fiber optics is said to produce inertia coils.
The main theme of 'Unlimited Energy' is to promote the use of non polluting renewable energy Two theories are played out throughout the book. First is the use of a two mile high tower. Second is the logic for, and production of a source of renewable energy, from countries with abundant sunlight. It can be safely carried in your pocket. The Author claims to have done the initial development work. This has only recently become practical because of the production of new photo-voltaic plastics.
The hero is teamed up with a multi-peta byte animate, beautiful of course, to solve problems caused by pollution and a serious lack of oil in 2022. There is also an in depth discussion throughout the book of the growth of artificially induced intelligence and it’s combination with human intelligence to produce something that will save mankind from the machines of the future. An insight into how consciousness develops is thought provoking.
Technical issues are easily understood and add credibility to the plot. ‘Unlimited Energy’ is written in a style that we associate with ‘Star Trek’ or ‘Farscape’. The reader will appreciate that this is a language that is universally understood and that the book is intended for all countries.
‘Unlimited Energy’ is a book that is written as much for women as for men, and sex scenes are tastefully described in a poetic way. This is an amazing romp, with a very serious message, through several countries including Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and USA.
Finally, for those who like the occasional moist eye or Socratic humor, this will be even more enjoyable.

Escape-Rail Raises Hopes for Safe High Rise Emergency Escape and Entry
Escape-Rail is the only real escape/entry solution for High Rise structures and can be installed on the fly. Track is only 1 5/8" wide.
Miami, FL (PRWEB) June 12, 2005 -- Implementing the Escape-Rail system allows more people to make a safe and quick exit from burning buildings while providing firefighters easier access from the outside to high-rise fires, and - ultimately - a safer environment for fighting fires. Ideal for high-rise buildings, the product can be installed on new construction or on already existing buildings.
Arnold Iacoviello, creator of Escape-Rail, firmly believes that lives can be saved by using the system. "Saving even one life makes the Escape-Rail system's value incalculuable - our system helps evacuate a continuous stream of people. This means more tracks installed on a building results in more people being evacuated simultaneously," stated Iacoviello.
The easy-to-use product requires little maintenance and not only aids in fire escape but also in fighting fires. Escape-Rail is designed to carry a remote-controlled fire nozzle up a building to direct a controllable stream of water to areas which were previously unreachable.
Aside from transporting firefighters up the outside of buildings more safely, Escape-Rail may carry rescue and fire equipment - minimizing the risk to firefighters of ascending and descending smokey stairwells to fight high-rise fires. Escape-Rail can also be used on buildings that do not have the system pre-installed. Rescue teams equipped with Escape-Rail can use the system to work on almost any building, in any emergency situation.
Once installed, Escape-Rail is multi-faceted and can be used to hold surveillance cameras or to provide a method of cleaning high-rise windows, extending the product use beyond what traditional fire-escape methods are available on the market - in its safety, flexibility and versatility.
Iacoviello is actively seeking investors for Escape-Rail licensing and manufacture. For more information on Escape-Rail or to contact the developer of Escape-Rail, visit http://www.escape-rail.com.

DIY Team of Hot Rodders’ Among 40 Top Teams Chosen for 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge
Los Angeles based AI Motorvators team in the midst of 2 million dollar high-tech national competition. MIT, Princeton teams eliminated
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 9, 2005 -- The A.I. Motorvators are a Southern California based team of engineers, racers, and hot-rodders turning automotive race know-how and programming savvy into advanced vehicle technology. "We're carrying on the tradition of taking automotive technology to the limit; we see it as 21st century hot-rodding" says team leader Chris Pedersen. "We are proud to be able to contribute something that might save lives." The team began in 2003.
What began in a residential garage has now become a force to be reckoned with. The AI Motorvators’ are betting their fully-autonomous, open-wheeled roadster aptly named “Dawn of the Independents” has the right stuff to take on some major competition. Up for grabs is a 2 million dollar prize and engineering bragging rights among the top universities and private sector companies.
In addition to Pedersen, team members include: Steve Piorek, Gunnar Ristroph, Hans Scholze, Catherine Huybrechts, Don Tuch, Tony Carlson, Lisa Mills and Richard Bellamy. “We learned a lot during last year’s competition, we expect to be extremely competitive” says Pedersen. “Our vehicle represents a complete departure from off the shelf components”. The team designed and built everything including the chassis, actuation mechanics, embedded control hardware, and comprehensive navigational and control software. “Nobody has the equipment we’ve got.”
The DARPA Grand challenge is a race for computer controlled vehicles to self-navigate more than 150 miles off road, across the California and Nevada deserts without any human control. The first team to complete the prescribed course in under 10 hours wins the 2 million dollars. The NQE or National Qualification Event will be a week long competition at California Speedway leading up to the race. The competition should be very intense as 40 of the best teams in the nation will be vying for only 20 starting spots for the race. The event is open to the public as well as press and media.
The AI Motorvators are seeking additional sponsors interested in the enormous publicity this prestigious event will generate.
Current sponsors include:Trimble Ag Division, Omnistar, Digital Globe, RadarSat International.

Drowning Victim Recovered by St. Louis County, MN, Sheriff's Office Rescue Squad
Location and Recovery was Rapid and Safe Using Newly Acquired Technology
Price County, WI (PRWEB) June 10, 2005 -- The body of Andrew Lovell was recovered on Saturday, May 28th, with the assistance of cutting edge underwater technology. The 30 year old Wisconsin resident had been fishing in Butternut Lake on May 23rd when his unoccupied fishing boat was spotted by his fiancé during the evening hours.
Several agencies responded and were faced with searching an area several acres in size. Divers made 30 separate dives but the large search area and poor visibility made this work difficult. The Price County Sheriff's Office contacted the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office in Duluth, Minnesota for assistance.
"We had recently received a new side scan sonar and were planning on utilizing it with our drowning recoveries", said Dave Phillips, St. Louis County Undersheriff. "We have had success with body recovery and scene investigation with our VideoRay Remotely Operated Vehicle, and were looking to integrate side-scan sonar into our operations." The City of Duluth, Minnesota, had recently assisted the St. Louis County Rescue Squad in obtaining the Side Scan Sonar by utilizing funds from a Homeland Security grant.
Members of the St. Louis County Sheriff's Volunteer Rescue Squad and Sheriff's office staff worked with the Price County Sheriff's Office, Butternut Fire Department and Dive Team in the recovery effort. One boat was set up with the Marine Sonic Technology, Ltd. (http://www.marinesonic.com/ ) side scan sonar, while another boat was equipped with the VideoRay, LLC (http://www.videoray.com ) Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV); a small 8 pound underwater robot equipped with a scanning sonar and video capability. The two boats worked together in the recovery effort: First, the side scan sonar was deployed and operators identified suspicious "hits" on the bottom and relayed this information to the squad members on the ROV boat.
One image collected by the Sea Scan PC with a 900kHz tow-fish left little doubt that the victim had been located. The VideoRay ROV confirmed this, provided video forensic evidence, and led divers to the victim so they could recover Mr. Lovell. After 4 ½ hours, the body of Andrew Lovell was located.
"We were glad to have helped on this operation. This was an agonizing, difficult time for the family and emergency responders", Phillips stated. Numerous agencies had participated in the efforts over the past week including the Price County Sheriff, Ashland County Sheriff, Butternut Fire and Rescue, Butternut Dive Team, Park Falls Fire and Police.

VideoRay Underwater Robot Aids United Nations in Tsunami Cleanup
Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) rushed to Phuket, Thailand with Expert Training
(PRWEB) June 2, 2005 -- After the devastating Tsunami of December 26, 2004, it was clear that the destruction of human homes and lives was accompanied by significant damage to many of the region's natural resources, including coral reefs. The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS - www.unops.org ) is coordinating the UNDP Reef Recovery and Rehabilitation Project in Thailand, along with the Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC - http://www.pmbc.go.th/English/English.asp).
With the hazards and difficulties of extended human diving in this environment, a public tender was prepared to locate the best portable Remotely Operated Vehicle to assist divers and document the condition of reefs before and after reconstructions and to survey wreckage and debris in the water. UNOPS selected the VideoRay Pro III from VideoRay LLC, as the most proven, feature rich and cost-efficient ROV, and on April 15th an urgent purchase ordered was issued for one unit and training. Less than two weeks later the unit was in Bangkok, and within a month the training was completed.
Scott Bentley, the President of VideoRay LLC, and Steve Van Meter, the Hazardous Duty Robotics Specialist on leave from NASA, Kennedy Space Center, traveled to Phuket to train VideoRay operators including Niphon Phongsuwan, the primary Marine (coral reef) Biologist of PMBC, Lynsey Hill, the Technical Coordinator, Reef Recovery and Rehabilitation, Thailand, of UNOPS and David Marsden, a Professional diver for UNOPS. The three day training sessions included basic operations, maintenance including disassembly and reassembly of the unit, and operations from both piers and a large diving support vessel. "It is important for us to have the best scientific tools available to observe underwater specimens and activity" said Mr. Phongsuwan, describing the importance of the VideoRay to PMBC. "The video record and stills we capture with VideoRay let us document the status, growth, and change of living coral reefs."
"We need to get the tonnes of debris from houses, boats, and other man-made material which fell on the reefs removed as quickly and efficiently as we can, using mainly volunteer labor." Said Ms. Hill. "We're very excited about the use of VideoRay - a device that has no limits on depth, dive time, or the other physiological constraints we must live with when we dive. The VideoRay will check out sites before we dive them, and work alongside of divers during cleanups - saving us time and making us far safer and more efficient. And, with the ability to capture video and stills to our laptop computer, we'll have better documentation of our project."
Since the cost of the VideoRay was lower than anticipated for this capability, the UNOPS is considering purchasing additional accessories including a larger monitor, a water quality sensor and scanning sonar to make the underwater robot even more valuable to the project.
